Abstract

We consider the following eigenvalue optimization problem: Given a bounded domain $\Omega\subset\R^n$ and numbers $\alpha\geq 0$, $A\in [0,|\Omega|]$, find a subset $D\subset\Omega$ of area $A$ for which the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the operator $-\Delta + \alpha \chi_D$ is as small as possible. We prove existence of solutions and investigate their qualitative properties. For example, we show that for some symmetric domains (thin annuli and dumbbells with narrow handle) optimal solutions must possess fewer symmetries than $\Omega$; on the other hand, for convex $\Omega$ reflection symmetries are preserved. Abstract

Hibonite is a primary ultra-refractory mineral occurring in many Ca-Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) and is predicted to condense as the second major phase from a cooling gas of solar composition. Our previous microstructural studies of hibonite in carbonaceous chondrites revealed its unique microstructures consisting of numerous defects that contain Mg-enriched, wider spinel blocks in stoichiometric hibonite. Han, J. et al. [2 items] demonstrated experimentally that defect-structured hibonites can grow easily in the presence of minor Mg and are kinetically more stable than equilibrium assemblages predicted by thermodynamic calculations. However, a thermo-dynamic vs. structural stability of defect-structured hibonite relative to other early-condensed Al-rich phases such as corundum, grossite, and spinel remains poorly constrained. Here, we present the results of atomic resolution TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) imaging of hibonite in a compact Type A CAI in the Allende CV3 chondrite in order to better understand the crystal structure and chemistry of defect-structured hibonite and its associated Al-rich phases, especially non-stoichiometric, Al-rich spinel, in the context of the formation of first refractory solids in the early solar nebula.

11. Dynamic singular moments in a perfectly conducting mindlin plate with a through crack under a magnetic field

Abstract

Following Mindlin's theory of plate bending of magnetoelasticity, we consider the scattering of time-harmonic flexural waves by a through crack in a perfectly conducting plate under a uniform magnetic field normal to the crack surface. An incident wave giving rise to moments symmetric about the crack plane is applied. It is assumed that the plate has the electric and magnetic permeabilities of the free space. By the use of Fourier transforms we reduce the problem to solving a pair of dual integral equations. The solution of the dual integral equations is then expressed in terms of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The dynamic moment intensity factor versus frequency is computed and the influence of the magnetic field on the normalized values is displayed graphically. It is found that the existence of the magnetic field produces lower singular moments near the crack tip. [S0021-8936(00)02603-9]

Abstract

Comets are generally believed to have formed in a cold region, trapping in the cometary ices the original low-temperature condensate grains of our Solar System. These grains would have been preserved in cold-storage, at a temperature below the freezing point of CO2, for the last 4.5+ billion years. Carbonates are common in hydrous meteorites and hydrous interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), where they are believed to have formed by parent-body aqueous processing. Since simple models of cometary evolution involve no aqueous processing, carbonates were generally presumed not to occur in comets. However, Toppani et al. [1] have performed experiments that indicate carbonate can be formed by non-equilibrium condensation in circumstellar environments where water is present as a vapor, not as a liquid. This suggests carbonate might have condensed in cold regions of the Solar Nebula, and might be present in comets.

Abstract

The moment intensity factors of a through crack in a conducting plate under a uniform magnetic field is examined using the classical plate bending theory of magneto-elasticity. The electric and magnetic permeabilities of the plate are assumed. The analysis is limited to dual integral equations using Fourier transforms. Results reveal the production of higher singular moments near the crack tip due to the existence of the magnetic field.

Abstract

Preliminary examination of particles collected from Comet Wild 2 suggest that this comet is chondritic and formed under multiple processes. The lack of any hydrated minerals strongly suggests that most, if not all of these processes were anhydrous [1,2,3]. However, carbonates were found in particles extracted from 4 different tracks in the aerogel. It is our belief that these carbonates have a terrestrial origin and are a contaminant in these samples.

Abstract

Background: Glucose intolerance is frequently found in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the spine. This study was undertaken to examine the relationship between glucose intolerance and the extent of ossification in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.Methods: A total of 100 patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (the overall study group), including fifty-two inpatients who were scheduled to have an operation (the inpatient group) and forty-eight outpatients who had undergone an operation, were analyzed. Indices of glucose metabolism-fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin levels, hemoglobin A1c level, and insulinogenic index (a ratio of the increment of the serum level of insulin to that of glucose)-as well as age and body-mass index were correlated with the extent of ossification, as determined by the number of vertebral levels affected with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (extent of ossification), in the inpatient group. In addition, a similar analysis was performed in twenty-eight inpatients (the selected inpatient group) whose ages and body-mass indices were within one standard deviation of the mean values of those of the inpatient group. Association of a polymorphism in the gene of insulin receptor substrate-1, an essential substrate in insulin signaling, with the extent of ossification was evaluated with genomic DNA extracted from the overall study group.Results: Multiple-regression analysis revealed direct correlations of age (p = 0.038), body-mass index (p = 0.006), and insulinogenic index (p = 0.0003) with the extent of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament in the inpatient group. The fasting plasma glucose level, the hemoglobin A1c level, and the stage of glucose tolerance were not associated with the extent of ossification. In the analysis of the selected inpatient group, only the insulinogenic index was correlated with the extent of ossification (p = 0.002). However, no significant association was seen between the insulin receptor substrate-1 polymorphism and the extent of ossification.Conclusions: The insulin secretory response was associated with the extent of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Since insulin receptor substrate-1 is expressed both in the spinal ligament and in the tissues regulating glucose metabolism, we speculate that some other molecules related to insulin signaling that are impaired only in the tissues regulating glucose metabolism may be responsible for the progression of ossification. We also speculate that the upregulation of insulin production due to the impairment of insulin action may stimulate osteoprogenitor cells in the ligament to induce ossification.Clinical Relevance: The insulinogenic index may be useful as a serum marker for the prediction of progression of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. This study may serve as a stimulus for evaluation of the use of various drugs that may improve the response to insulin in the tissues regulating glucose metabolism to prevent the progression of ossification. Abstract

The present study aimed to develop a method to measure three-dimensional (3-D) thickness of cartilage (Tc) at the femoral condyle using B-mode ultrasonography (US) and to clarify the feasibility of US in clinical evaluations of articular cartilage by comparing the results with 3-D measurement values using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and assessing repeatability. The medial surface of the right knees of two healthy male volunteers (age, 37 and 59 years) and the knees on affected side of three male patients with osteoarthritis (OA) (age, 73, 81 and 83 years) were scanned using B-mode US with the knee flexed at 120°. The range of the angle of probe rotation for the arm was 0-80° and B-mode images (total, 101 images) were acquired every 0.8°. MRI of the knees was also performed using the double echo steady-state sequence. Both US and MRI images were used to create 3-D models of medial femoral condyle articular cartilage. Tc was determined at points 1 mm apart from one another in the US model (Tc-US) and MRI model (Tc-MRI). Tc-US was compared with Tc-MRI and the repeatability of Tc-US was assessed by mean Tc in the specific region of interest of the femoral condyle. Tc-US correlated significantly with Tc-MRI both in volunteers and in OA patients (p < 0.0001 each) and coefficients of correlation were 0.976 and 0.964 for volunteers and OA patients, respectively. The coefficient of variance for mean Tc-US was 4.90%. Our results show that 3-D US measurements of femoral cartilage are reproducible and correlate strongly with MRI measurements.
