1. Ultralong-term high-density data storage with atomic defects in SiC

Abstract: There is an urgent need to increase the global data storage capacity, as current approaches lag behind the exponential growth of data generation driven by the Internet, social media and cloud technologies. In addition to increasing storage density, new solutions should provide long-term data archiving that goes far beyond traditional magnetic memory, optical disks and solid-state drives. Here, we propose a concept of energy-efficient, ultralong, high-density data archiving based on optically active atomic-size defects in a radiation resistance material, silicon carbide (SiC). The information is written in these defects by focused ion beams and read using photoluminescence or cathodoluminescence. The temperature-dependent deactivation of these defects suggests a retention time minimum over a few generations under ambient conditions. With near-infrared laser excitation, grayscale encoding and multi-layer data storage, the areal density corresponds to that of Blu-ray discs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the areal density limitation of conventional optical data storage media due to the light diffraction can be overcome by focused electron-beam excitation., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

2. Diamond quantum magnetometer with dc sensitivity of < 10 pT Hz$^{-1/2}$ toward measurement of biomagnetic field

Abstract: We present a sensitive diamond quantum sensor with a magnetic field sensitivity of $9.4 \pm 0.1~\mathrm{pT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ in a near-dc frequency range of 5 to 100~Hz. This sensor is based on the continuous-wave optically detected magnetic resonance of an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers along the [111] direction in a diamond (111) single crystal. The long $T_{2}^{\ast} \sim 2~\mathrm{\mu s}$ in our diamond and the reduced intensity noise in laser-induced fluorescence result in remarkable sensitivity among diamond quantum sensors. Based on an Allan deviation analysis, we demonstrate that a sub-picotesla field of 0.3~pT is detectable by interrogating the magnetic field for a few thousand seconds. The sensor head is compatible with various practical applications and allows a minimum measurement distance of about 1~mm from the sensing region. Abstract: The use of diamond color centers such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is increasingly enabling quantum sensing and computing applications. Novel concepts like cavity coupling and readout, laser threshold magnetometry and multi-pass geometries allow significantly improved sensitivity and performance via increased signals and strong light fields. Enabling material properties for these techniques and their further improvements are low optical material losses via optical absorption of signal light and low birefringence. Here we study systematically the behavior of absorption around 700 nm and birefringence with increasing nitrogen- and NV-doping, as well as their behavior during NV creation via diamond growth, electron beam irradiation and annealing treatments. Absorption correlates with increased nitrogen-doping yet substitutional nitrogen does not seem to be the direct absorber. Birefringence reduces with increasing nitrogen doping. We identify multiple crystal defect concentrations via absorption spectroscopy and their changes during the material processing steps and thus identify potential causes of absorption and birefringence as well as strategies to fabricate CVD diamonds with high NV density yet low absorption and low birefringence., Comment: Accepted by Philosophical Transactions A (DOI: 10.1098/rsta.2022.0314)

The primary measure in this study was morning home blood pressure (BP). Patients and methods: Two studies were done concurrently to investigate the effects of switching from two different ARBs to olmesartan. Patients prescribed candesartan (8 mg once daily in the morning) or telmisartan (40 mg once daily in the morning) for 16 weeks were switched to olmesartan (20 mg once daily in the morning) for 16 weeks. Then, they were switched back to candesartan (CO group) or telmisartan (TO group) for another 16 weeks. Results: Data from all patients in the CO group (n=165) and the TO group (n=152) were analyzed. Abstract: AbstractAn atomic-force microscope assisted technique is developed to control the position and size of self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Presently, the site precision is as good as ± 1.5 nm and the size fluctuation is within ± 5% with the minimum controllable lateral diameter of 20 nm. With the ability of producing tightly packed and differently sized QDs, sophisticated QD arrays can be controllably fabricated for the application in quantum computing. The optical quality of such site-controlled QDs is found comparable to some conventionally self-assembled semiconductor QDs. The single dot photoluminescence of site-controlled InAs/InP QDs is studied in detail, presenting the prospect to utilize them in quantum communication as precisely controlled single photon emitters working at telecommunication bands.

Abstract: Magnetic imaging with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, also known as quantum diamond microscopy, has emerged as a useful technique for the spatial mapping of charge currents in solid-state devices. In this work, we investigate an application to photovoltaic (PV) devices, where the currents are induced by light. We develop a widefield nitrogen-vacancy microscope that allows independent stimulus and measurement of the PV device, and test our system on a range of prototype crystalline silicon PV devices. We first demonstrate micrometer-scale vector magnetic field imaging of custom PV devices illuminated by a focused laser spot, revealing the internal current paths in both short-circuit and open-circuit conditions. We then demonstrate time-resolved imaging of photocurrents in an interdigitated back-contact solar cell, detecting current build-up and subsequent decay near the illumination point with microsecond resolution. 7. Open-circuit voltage degradation and trap-assisted tunneling in electron and proton-irradiated ultra-thin GaAs solar cells.

Abstract: Ultra-thin solar cells display high intrinsic radiation tolerance, making them interesting for space applications. This study investigates the dependence of the open-circuit voltage degradation and overall current–voltage behavior of devices with 80 nm thick GaAs absorber layers, on their absorber layer doping concentration and the radiation type used to introduce damage. The radiation types used were 1 MeV electrons and 20 keV, 100 keV, and 1 MeV protons. It is shown that the open-circuit voltage degradation rate increases with absorber layer doping concentration. This is linked to the increase in trap-assisted tunneling enhancement of the recombination rate, facilitated by the increase in electric field strength in the absorber layer with doping concentration. Trap-assisted tunneling is also found to contribute to the high local ideality factors observed in these devices, exceeding values of 2, and to be responsible for the trend of an increasing ideality factor with doping concentration. The significant role of trap-assisted tunneling in the devices is established through fitting of dark current–voltage data using a custom recombination–generation model. An open-circuit voltage degradation rate and local ideality factor curves are also shown to vary with radiation type, despite accounting for their differences in non-ionizing energy loss. This is corroborated by corresponding trends in carrier lifetime damage constants, extracted from the fitting of the dark current–voltage curves. This suggests that the introduction or behavior of radiation damage differs between ultra-thin and conventional, thicker solar cells, where non-ionizing energy loss theory tends to be reliable, especially over the studied proton energy range. Abstract: The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a promising quantum system for magnetometry applications exhibiting optical readout of minute energy shifts in its spin sub-levels. Key material requirements for NV ensembles are a high NV$^-$ concentration, a long spin coherence time and a stable charge state. However, these are interdependent and can be difficult to optimize during diamond growth and subsequent NV creation. In this work, we systematically investigate the NV center formation and properties in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond. The nitrogen flow during growth is varied by over 4 orders of magnitude, resulting in a broad range of single substitutional nitrogen concentrations of 0.2-20 parts per million. For a fixed nitrogen concentration, we optimize electron-irradiation fluences with two different accelerated electron energies, and we study defect formation via optical characterizations. We discuss a general approach to determine the optimal irradiation conditions, for which an enhanced NV concentration and an optimum of NV charge states can both be satisfied. We achieve spin-spin coherence times T$_2$ ranging from 45.5 to 549 $\mu$s for CVD diamonds containing 168 to 1 parts per billion NV$^-$ centers, respectively. Abstract: Negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond are promising quantum magnetic field sensors. Laser threshold magnetometry has been a theoretical approach for the improvement of NV-centre ensemble sensitivity via increased signal strength and magnetic field contrast. In this work we experimentally demonstrate laser threshold magnetometry. We use a macroscopic high-finesse laser cavity containing a highly NV-doped and low absorbing diamond gain medium that is pumped at 532nm and resonantly seeded at 710nm. This enables amplification of the signal power by stimulated emission of 64%. We show the magnetic-field dependency of the amplification and thus, demonstrate magnetic-field dependent stimulated emission from an NV-centre ensemble. This emission shows a record contrast of 33% and a maximum output power in the mW regime. These advantages of coherent read-out of NV-centres pave the way for novel cavity and laser applications of quantum defects as well as diamond NV magnetic field sensors with significantly improved sensitivity for the health, research and mining sectors.

Abstract: We report results from a study of hadronic transitions of the $\chi_{bJ}(nP)$ states of bottomonium at Belle. The $P$-wave states are reconstructed in transitions to the $\Upsilon(1S)$ with the emission of an $\omega$ meson. The transitions of the $n=2$ triplet states provide a unique laboratory in which to study nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, as the kinematic threshold for production of an $\omega$ and $\Upsilon(1S)$ lies between the $J=0$ and $J=1$ states. A search for the $\chi_{bJ}(3P)$ states is also reported.

Abstract: The list of semiconductor materials with spectroscopically fingerprinted self-interstitials is very short. The M-center in 4H-SiC, a bistable defect responsible for a family of electron traps, has been deprived of a model which could unveil its real importance for almost two decades. Using advanced first-principles calculations and junction spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the properties of M, including bistability, annealing, reconfiguration kinetics, and electronic levels, match those of the carbon self-interstitial.

Abstract: In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow \eta^\prime \eta$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to \eta\eta, \eta\eta^{\prime}, \eta^{\prime}\eta^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for $B_s^0 \to \eta^{\prime}\eta^{\prime}$ has been measured so far.

Abstract: The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. Abstract: Silicon carbide has recently been developed as a platform for optically addressable spin defects. In particular, the neutral divacancy in the 4H polytype displays an optically addressable spin-1 ground state and near-infrared optical emission. Here, we present the Purcell enhancement of a single neutral divacancy coupled to a photonic crystal cavity. We utilize a combination of nanolithographic techniques and a dopant-selective photoelectrochemical etch to produce suspended cavities with quality factors exceeding 5,000. Subsequent coupling to a single divacancy leads to a Purcell factor of ~50, which manifests as increased photoluminescence into the zero-phonon line and a shortened excited-state lifetime. Additionally, we measure coherent control of the divacancy ground state spin inside the cavity nanostructure and demonstrate extended coherence through dynamical decoupling. This spin-cavity system represents an advance towards scalable long-distance entanglement protocols using silicon carbide that require the interference of indistinguishable photons from spatially separated single qubits., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Irradiation-induced lattice defects in silicon carbide (SiC) have already exceeded their previous reputation as purely performance-inhibiting. With their remarkable quantum properties, such as long room-temperature spin coherence and the possibility of downscaling to single-photon source level, they have proven to be promising candidates for a multitude of quantum information applications. One of the most crucial parameters of any quantum system is how long its quantum coherence can be preserved. By using the pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique, we investigate the spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$) and spin coherence time ($T_2$) of silicon vacancies in 4H-SiC created by neutron, electron and proton irradiation in a broad range of fluences. We also examine the effect of irradiation energy and sample annealing. We establish a robustness of the $T_1$ time against all types of irradiation and reveal a universal scaling of the $T_2$ time with the emitter density. Our results can be used to optimize the coherence properties of silicon vacancy qubits in SiC for specific tasks., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We report an experimental determination of the isospin of $\Lambda_c(2765)^+/\Sigma_c(2765)^+$ using 980 fb$^{-1}$ data in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation around $\sqrt{s} = 10.6$ GeV collected by the Belle detector located at the KEKB collider. The isospin partners are searched for in the $\Sigma_c(2455)^{++/0} \pi^{0}$ channels, and no evidence was obtained. Abstract: We report a measurement of the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \tau^- \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast}) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \tau^- \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. The analysis utilizes a method where the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode, and the signal-side $\tau$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast})= 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$ and $1.1$ standard deviations, respectively, while their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions within $1.2$ standard deviations., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the $D^{\ast -}$ meson polarization in the decay $B^0 \to D^{*-} \tau^+\nu_{\tau}$ using the full data sample of 772$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our result, $F_L^{D^\ast} = 0.60 \pm 0.08 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.04 ({\rm sys})$, where $F_L^{D^\ast}$ denotes the $D^{\ast-}$ meson longitudinal polarization fraction, agrees within about $1.7$ standard deviations of the standard model prediction., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, CKM 2018

Abstract: We report a search for charmless hadronic decays of charged $B$ mesons to the final states $K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} K^{\pm}$ and $K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} \pi^{\pm}$ . The results are based on a $711 {fb}^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772 \times 10^6$ $B \bar{B}$ pairs, and was collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. For $B^{\pm} \to K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} K^{\pm}$ decays, the measured branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry are $[10.64\pm0.49(stat)\pm 0.44(syst)]\times10^{-6}$ and [$-0.6\pm3.9(stat)\pm 3.4(syst)$] %, respectively. In the absence of a statistically significant signal for $B^{\pm}\to K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} \pi^{\pm}$, we set the 90 % confidence-level upper limit on its branching fraction at $1.14 \times 10^{-6}$.

Abstract: We report the measurement of the branching fraction and $CP$ asymmetry for the $\bar{B}^{0}(B^{0})\to K^{0}_{S}K^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}$ decay. The analysis is performed on a data sample of 711 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We obtain a branching fraction of $(3.60\pm0.33\pm0.15)\times10^{-6}$ and an $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ of $(-8.5\pm8.9\pm0.2)\%$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract: Nanoscale quantum probes such as the nitrogen-vacancy centre in diamond have demonstrated remarkable sensing capabilities over the past decade as control over the fabrication and manipulation of these systems has evolved. However, as the size of these nanoscale quantum probes is reduced, the surface termination of the host material begins to play a prominent role as a source of magnetic and electric field noise. In this work, we show that borane-reduced nanodiamond surfaces can on average double the spin relaxation time of individual nitrogen-vacancy centres in nanodiamonds when compared to the thermally oxidised surfaces. Using a combination of infra-red and x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques, we correlate the changes in quantum relaxation rates with the conversion of sp2 carbon to C-O and C-H bonds on the diamond surface. These findings implicate double-bonded carbon species as a dominant source of spin noise for near surface NV centres and show that through tailored engineering of the surface, we can improve the quantum properties and magnetic sensitivity of these nanoscale probes., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We present a measurement of the Michel parameters of the $\tau$ lepton, $\bar{\eta}$ and $\xi\kappa$, in the radiative leptonic decay $\tau^- \rightarrow \ell^- \nu_{\tau} \bar{\nu}_{\ell} \gamma$ using 711~f$\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of collision data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The Michel parameters are measured in an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic distribution of $e^+e^-\rightarrow\tau^+\tau^-\rightarrow (\pi^+\pi^0 \bar{\nu}_\tau)(\ell^-\nu_{\tau}\bar{\nu}_{\ell}\gamma)$ $(\ell=e$ or $\mu)$. The measured values of the Michel parameters are $\bar{\eta} = -1.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8$ and $\xi\kappa = 0.5 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first measurement of these parameters. These results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions within their uncertainties and constrain the coupling constants of the generalized weak interaction.

Abstract: We investigate the pump efficiency of silicon vacancy-related spins in silicon carbide. For a crystal inserted into a microwave cavity with a resonance frequency of 9.4 GHz, the spin population inversion factor of 75 with the saturation optical pump power of about 350 mW is achieved at room temperature. At cryogenic temperature, the pump efficiency drastically increases, owing to an exceptionally long spin-lattice relaxation time exceeding one minute. Based on the experimental results, we find realistic conditions under which a silicon carbide maser can operate in continuous-wave mode and serve as a quantum microwave amplifier., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond is a unique optical defect that is used in many applications today and methods to enhance its fluorescence brightness are highly sought after. We observed experimentally an enhancement of the NV quantum yield by up to 7% in bulk diamond caused by an external magnetic field relative to the field-free case. This observation is rationalised phenomenologically in terms of a magnetic field dependence of the NV excited state triplet-to-singlet transition rate. The theoretical model is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results at low excitation intensities. Our results significantly contribute to our fundamental understanding of the photophysical properties of the NV defect in diamond and may enable novel NV centre-based magnetometry techniques., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The precise determination of the CKM matrix element $\left| V_{cb}\right|$ is important for carrying out tests of the flavour sector of the Standard Model. In this article we present a preliminary analysis of the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay mode and its charge conjugate, selected in events that contain a fully reconstructed $B$-meson, using 772 million $e^+ \, e^- \to \Upsilon(4S) \to B \bar B$ events recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. We measure the total branching fraction $\mathcal{B}( \bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell ) = \left(4.95 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.22 \right) \times 10^{-2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic respectively. The value of $\left|V_{cb} \right|$ is determined to be $\left( 37.4 \pm 1.3 \right) \times 10^{-3}$. Both results are in good agreement with current world averages.

Abstract: Silicon carbide (SiC) power devices are becoming central components in high voltage electronics. However, defects at interfaces and in the bulk continue to severely impact their reliability and performance. Here, we develop a charge pumping method to characterize SiC/SiO 2 interface defects in fully fabricated commercial SiC power metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). The method is then used to address spin states at the SiC/SiO 2 interface via charge pumping electrically detected magnetic resonance (CP-EDMR). We apply these methods to investigate the power MOSFET after electron irradiation over a dose range of 10 13 − 10 17 cm − 2 . We finally discuss CP-EDMR as a technique to interrogate spins during device operation for real-time monitoring of the device quality, performance, and degradation and as a probe for local magnetic fields. Abstract: We report the first observation of the polarization of $\Lambda/\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $\Sigma^0/\bar{\Sigma}^0$ and $\Lambda_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4\~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We report results on the studies of the $e^+e^-\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ processes. The results are based on a $121.4$ fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the $\Upsilon(10860)$ peak and $16.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. We observe a clear $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon(10860)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ signal, with no statistically significant signal of $e^+e^-\to \Upsilon(11020)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$. The relative production ratio of $B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*$, $B_s\bar{B}_s^{*}$, and $B_s\bar{B}_s$ final states at $\sqrt{s}=10.866$ GeV is measured to be $7:$ $0.856\pm0.106(stat.)\pm0.053(syst.):$ $0.645\pm0.094(stat.)^{+0.030}_{-0.033}(syst.)$. An angular analysis of the $B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*$ final state produced at the $\Upsilon(10860)$ peak is also performed., Comment: 22 page, 6 figures

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters $\bar{\eta}$ and $\xi\kappa$ in the radiative leptonic decay of the $\tau$ lepton using 703 f$\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of $e^+e^-\rightarrow\tau^+\tau^-\rightarrow (\pi^+\pi^0 \bar{\nu})(l^-\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma)$ $(l=e$ or $\mu)$. The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are $\bar{\eta} = -2.0 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8$ and $\xi\kappa = 0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ using 921~fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ and $\Upsilon(5S)$ resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed asymmetry is $$ A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, ICHEP 2016

Abstract: We report a search for $B^{0}\to \eta \eta $ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $698 \,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ containing $753 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to \eta \eta ) = (7.6^{+2.7 +1.4}_{-2.3 -1.6}) \times 10^{-7}$ at the level of 3.3 standard deviations above zero, which provides the first evidence for the decay $B^{0} \to \eta \eta$., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, ICHEP 2016

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the $\tau$ lepton polarization in the decay ${\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \tau^- {\bar\nu_{\tau}}$ as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \tau^- {\bar\nu_{\tau}}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\bar\nu_{\ell}})$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays $\tau^- \rightarrow \pi^- \nu_{\tau}$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \rho^- \nu_{\tau}$. We use the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our preliminary results, $R(D^*) = 0.276 \pm 0.034{\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.029} _{-0.026}{\rm (syst.)}$ and $P_{\tau} = -0.44 \pm 0.47 {\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.20} _{-0.17} {\rm (syst.)}$, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model within $0.6$ standard deviation., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures, ICHEP 2016

Abstract: We report a study of radiative decays of \chi_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the \chi_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at \Gamma_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the \Upsilon(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 \Upsilon(2S) decays.

Abstract: We present a measurement of angular observables, $P_4'$, $P_5'$, $P_6'$, $P_8'$, in the decay $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$, where $\ell^+\ell^-$ is either $e^+e^-$ or $\mu^+\mu^-$. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ containing $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider KEKB. Four angular observables, $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, $q^2$. We compare our results for $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ with Standard Model predictions including the $q^2$ region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called $P_5'$ anomaly., Comment: Conference paper for LHC Ski 2016. Abstract: We report a measurement of ratio ${\cal R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \tau^- \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. We select a sample of $B^0 \bar{B}^0$ pairs by reconstructing both $B$ mesons in semileptonic decays to $D^{*\mp} \ell^{\pm}$. We measure ${\cal R}(D^*)= 0.302 \pm 0.030({\rm stat)} \pm 0.011({\rm syst)}$, which is within $1.6 \sigma$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where $\sigma$ is the standard deviation including systematic uncertainties., Comment: 12pages, 13 figures, Moriond EW 2016

40. Locking of electron spin coherence over fifty milliseconds in natural silicon carbide

Abstract: We demonstrate that silicon carbide (SiC) with natural isotope abundance can preserve a coherent spin superposition in silicon vacancies over unexpectedly long time approaching 0.1 seconds. The spin-locked subspace with drastically reduced decoherence rate is attained through the suppression of heteronuclear spin cross-talking by applying a moderate magnetic field in combination with dynamic decoupling from the nuclear spin baths. We identify several phonon-assisted mechanisms of spin-lattice relaxation, ultimately limiting quantum coherence, and find that it can be extremely long at cryogenic temperature, equal or even longer than 8 seconds. Abstract: We present simultaneous optical and near-infrared (NIR) polarimetric results for the black hole binary V404 Cygni spanning the duration of its 7-day long optically-brightest phase of its 2015 June outburst. The simultaneous R and Ks-band light curves showed almost the same temporal variation except for the isolated (~30 min duration) orphan Ks-band flare observed at MJD 57193.54. We did not find any significant temporal variation of polarization degree (PD) and position angle (PA) in both R and Ks bands throughout our observations, including the duration of the orphan NIR flare. We show that the observed PD and PA are predominantly interstellar in origin by comparing the V404 Cyg polarimetric results with those of the surrounding sources within the 7'x7' field-of-view. The low intrinsic PD (less than a few percent) implies that the optical and NIR emissions are dominated by either disk or optically-thick synchrotron emission, or both. We also present the broadband spectra of V404 Cyg during the orphan NIR flare and a relatively faint and steady state by including quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and INTEGRAL fluxes. By adopting a single-zone synchrotron plus inverse-Compton model as widely used in modeling of blazars, we constrained the parameters of a putative jet. Because the jet synchrotron component cannot exceed the Swift/XRT disk/corona flux, the cutoff Lorentz factor in the electron energy distribution is constrained to be <10^2, suggesting particle acceleration is less efficient in this microquasar jet outburst compared to AGN jets. Abstract: There is an urgent need to increase the global data storage capacity, as current approaches lag behind the exponential growth of data generation driven by the Internet, social media and cloud technologies. In addition to increasing storage density, new solutions should provide long-term data archiving that goes far beyond traditional magnetic memory, optical disks and solid-state drives. Here, we propose a concept of energy-efficient, ultralong, high-density data archiving based on optically active atomic-size defects in a radiation resistance material, silicon carbide (SiC). The information is written in these defects by focused ion beams and read using photoluminescence or cathodoluminescence. The temperature-dependent deactivation of these defects suggests a retention time minimum over a few generations under ambient conditions. With near-infrared laser excitation, grayscale encoding and multi-layer data storage, the areal density corresponds to that of Blu-ray discs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the areal density limitation of conventional optical data storage media due to the light diffraction can be overcome by focused electron-beam excitation.

Abstract: This article reviews efforts to build a new type of quantum device, which combines an ensemble of electronic spins with long coherence times, and a small-scale superconducting quantum processor. The goal is to store over long times arbitrary qubit states in orthogonal collective modes of the spin-ensemble, and to retrieve them on-demand. We first present the protocol devised for such a multi-mode quantum memory. We then describe a series of experimental results using NV center spins in diamond, which demonstrate its main building blocks: the transfer of arbitrary quantum states from a qubit into the spin ensemble, and the multi-mode retrieval of classical microwave pulses down to the single-photon level with a Hahn-echo like sequence. Abstract: We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: We report the storage of microwave pulses at the single-photon level in a spin-ensemble memory consisting of $10^{10}$ NV centers in a diamond crystal coupled to a superconducting LC resonator. The energy of the signal, retrieved $100\, \mu \mathrm{s}$ later by spin-echo techniques, reaches $0.3\%$ of the energy absorbed by the spins, and this storage efficiency is quantitatively accounted for by simulations. Abstract: Electrically driven single-photon emitting devices have immediate applications in quantum cryptography, quantum computation and single-photon metrology. Mature device fabrication protocols and the recent observations of single defect systems with quantum functionalities make silicon carbide (SiC) an ideal material to build such devices. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of bright single photon emitting diodes. The electrically driven emitters display fully polarized output, superior photon statistics (with a count rate of $>$300 kHz), and stability in both continuous and pulsed modes, all at room temperature. The atomic origin of the single photon source is proposed. These results provide a foundation for the large scale integration of single photon sources into a broad range of applications, such as quantum cryptography or linear optics quantum computing., Comment: Main: 10 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0\pi^+\pi^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $\phi_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(\delta_S \pm \phi_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(\delta_S \pm \phi_3)$ and $\phi_3 (\delta_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.
