DetNorske Veritas VP Wilhelm Magelsen described the most suitable tanker design that is environment-friendly and could prevent oil spills. The design features dual redundant propulsion and steering coupled with an emergency propulsion system that can maintain a 6-knot speed even in severe weather conditions. Other features include an integrated navigation system that has an integrated brdge, electronic chart display and information systems. The use of redundant propulsion and steering gear is believed to lessen the risk of accidents, as well the possibility of machinery failure that may result to oil spills.
