Abstract

We report fabrication and measurement of a device where closely-placed two parallel InAs nanowires (NWs) are contacted by source and drain normal metal electrodes. Established technique includes selective deposition of double nanowires onto a previously defined gate region. By tuning the junction with the finger bottom gates, we confirmed the formation of parallel double quantum dots, one in each NW, with a finite electrostatic coupling between each other. With the fabrication technique established in this study, devices proposed for more advanced experiments, such as Cooper-pair splitting and the observation of parafermions, can be realized.

5. Feature analysis for drowsiness detection based on facial skin temperature using variational autoencoder : a preliminary study

Abstract

ABSTRACTTechnology to detect signs of drowsiness in drivers is essential even in the age of automated driving to prevent traffic accidents. In this study, facial skin temperature, which can be measured remotely using infrared thermography, as a measure for determining drowsiness was in focus. Facial skin temperature is an autonomic nervous system index that depends on skin blood flow. It is known that facial skin temperature changes depending on the physiological and psychological state, and that it is affected by drowsiness. We focused on an anomaly detection algorithm called the variational autoencoder (VAE). In this study, a model to detect drowsiness was constructed using VAE with only the facial skin temperature during arousal from sleep and search was made for facial areas where skin temperature fluctuates with drowsiness using the model. As a result, it was found that the side of the nasal dorsum may fluctuate with drowsiness and that facial skin temperature may fluctuate asymmetrically with drowsiness. Skin temperature around the orbit was shown to be an area of possible physiological and psychological significance related to autonomic nervous system activity. Based on the above, the degree of anomaly was confirmed to vary depending on the degree of drowsiness, indicating the usefulness of using VAE for drowsiness detection based on facial skin temperature.

10. Active beating of a reconstituted synthetic minimal axoneme

Abstract

Propelling microorganisms through fluids and moving fluids along cellular surfaces are essential biological functions accomplished by long, thin structures called motile cilia and flagella, whose regular, oscillatory beating breaks the time-reversal symmetry required for transport. Although top-down experimental approaches and theoretical models have allowed us to broadly characterize such organelles and propose mechanisms underlying their complex dynamics, constructing minimal systems capable of mimicking ciliary beating and identifying the role of each component remains a challenge. Here we report the bottom-up assembly of a minimal synthetic axoneme, which we call a synthoneme, using biological building blocks from natural organisms, namely pairs of microtubules and cooperatively associated axonemal dynein motors. We show that upon provision of energy by ATP, microtubules undergo rhythmic bending by cyclic association-dissociation of dyneins. Our simple and unique beating minimal synthoneme represents a self-organized nanoscale biomolecular machine that can also help understand the mechanisms underlying ciliary beating.

Abstract

SUMMARY: Extra‐high‐quality audio devices, which are reproducible sound of broadband, have appeared in recent years. Such audio devices of broadband can feel like a deeper sense of realism as an air field by feeling the vibration of the air with entire body. This technology is expected application as sense of presentation technology. Using this technology, development of the new stimulus medium that is the field generating device, such as wrapped up in air is enabled. The purpose of this study is to create a completely new sense with the airflow stimulus termed “air sensation” by using the air field. In this study, we measured the psychophysical quantities to clarify the cognitive characterization of air sensation as a basic examination. Specifically, we measured the absolute thresholds to detect the air‐flow stimulus and sensitivity characteristics with respect to the strength of the stimulus. 32. Dynein structure and power stroke

Abstract

Dynein ATPases are microtubule motors that are critical to diverse processes such as vesicle transport and the beating of sperm tails; however, their mechanism of force generation is unknown. Each dynein comprises a head, from which a stalk and a stem emerge. Here we use electron microscopy and image processing to reveal new structural details of dynein c, an isoform from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii flagella, at the start and end of its power stroke. Both stem and stalk are flexible, and the stem connects to the head by means of a linker approximately 10 nm long that we propose lies across the head. With both ADP and vanadate bound, the stem and stalk emerge from the head 10 nm apart. However, without nucleotide they emerge much closer together owing to a change in linker orientation, and the coiled-coil stalk becomes stiffer. The net result is a shortening of the molecule coupled to an approximately 15-nm displacement of the tip of the stalk. These changes indicate a mechanism for the dynein power stroke.

Auxin transport inhibitors (ATIs), which interfere with directional auxin transport, have been essential tools in formulating this concept. However, despite the use of ATIs in plant research for many decades, the mechanism of ATI action has remained largely elusive. Using real-time live-cell microscopy, we show here that prominent ATIs such as 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) and 2-(1-pyrenoyl) benzoic acid (PBA) inhibit vesicle trafficking in plant, yeast, and mammalian cells. Effects on micropinocytosis, rab5-labeled endosomal motility at the periphery of HeLa cells and on fibroblast mobility indicate that ATIs influence actin cytoskeleton. Visualization of actin cytoskeleton dynamics in plants, yeast, and mammalian cells show that ATIs stabilize actin. Conversely, stabilizing actin by chemical or genetic means interferes with endocytosis, vesicle motility, auxin transport, and plant development, including auxin transport-dependent processes. Our results show that a class of ATIs act as actin stabilizers and advocate that actin-dependent trafficking of auxin transport components participates in the mechanism of auxin transport. These studies also provide an example of how the common eukaryotic process of actin-based vesicle motility can fulfill a plant-specific physiological role.
