2. Comet 81/P Wild 2: changes in the spin axis orientation during the last five apparitions

Abstract

Comet 81P (Wild 2) is characterized by the presence of a prominent-fan shaped dust emission originating from an active source at high latitude on the nucleus, whose axis is assumed to coincide with the comet's rotation axis. Therefore, several authors estimated the spin axis orientation of 81P in past apparitions based on the polar jet model. By measuring the PAs of the fan on CCD images taken with different telescopes during the 2009-10 and 2022-23 apparitions, we estimated a position of the comet's spin axis at RA=295.0{\deg}$\pm$ 7.5{\deg}, Dec=14.5{\deg}$\pm$ 4.0{\deg} for the 2009-10 apparition and at RA=296.7{\deg}$\pm$ 2.0{\deg}, Dec=17.3{\deg}$\pm$ 2.5{\deg} for the 2022-23 apparition. Despite some degree of uncertainty of the estimate for the 2009-10 apparition, we interpolated the estimate for 2009-10 and 2022-23 with the published data of the previous apparition of 1997, to assess the presence and the extent of a drift of the pole since the 1997 passage. The analysis over a long time span of five consecutive apparitions confirms previous observations that the spin axis of comet 81P is subject to a slow drift with variable rate, probably connected to outgassing-induced jet forces and the related non-gravitational perturbations of its orbital period., Comment: Accepted for publication on Icarus. 23 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

We present PolicyCLOUD, a prototype for an extensible, serverless cloud-based system that supports evidence-based elaboration and analysis of policies. PolicyCLOUD allows flexible exploitation and management of policy-relevant dataflows by enabling the practitioner to register datasets and specify a sequence of transformations and/or information extraction through registered ingest functions. Once a possibly transformed dataset has been ingested, additional insights can be retrieved by further applying registered analytic functions. PolicyCLOUD was built as an extensible framework toward the creation of an analytic ecosystem. As of now, we developed several essential ingest and analytic functions that are built-in within the framework. They include data cleaning, enhanced interoperability, and sentiment analysis generic functions. PolicyCLOUD has also the ability to tap on the analytic capabilities of external tools. We demonstrate this with a Social Analytics tool implemented in conjunction with PolicyCLOUD and show how to benefit from policy modeling, design and simulation capabilities. Furthermore, PolicyCLOUD has developed a first of its kind legal and ethical framework that covers the usage and dissemination of datasets and analytic functions throughout its policy-relevant dataflows. Abstract

There was an unprecedented opportunity to study the inner dust coma environment, where the dust and gas are not entirely decoupled, of comets 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdu\u{s}\'akov\'a (45P/HMP) from Dec. 26, 2016 - Mar. 15, 2017, and 46P/Wirtanen from Nov. 10, 2018 - Feb. 13, 2019, both in visible wavelengths. The radial profile slopes of these comets were measured in the R and HB-BC filters most representative of dust, and deviations from a radially expanding coma were identified as significant. The azimuthally averaged radial profile slope of comet 45P/HMP gradually changes from -1.81 $\pm$ 0.20 at 5.24 days pre-perihelion to -0.35 $\pm$ 0.16 at 74.41 days post perihelion. Contrastingly, the radial profile slope of 46P/Wirtanen stays fairly constant over the observed time period at -1.05 $\pm$ 0.05. Additionally, we find that the radial profile of 46P/Wirtanen is azimuthally dependent on the skyplane-projected solar position angle, while that of 45P/HMP is not. These results suggest that comet 45P/HMP and 46P/Wirtanen have vastly different coma dust environments and that their dust properties are distinct. Abstract

The recent close approach of comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) allowed us to study the morphology of its inner coma. From the measurement of the dust ejection velocityon spiral structures expanding around the nucleus, we estimated a mean deprojectedexpansion velocity Vd= 1.11+/-0.08 km s^-1. Assuming that a new shell formed after every rotation of the comet, a rotation period of 7.8+/-0.2 hours was derived. The spin axis orientation was estimated at RA 210+/-10d, Dec. +3+/-10d. The comamorphology appears related to two strong, diametrically opposite emissions located at mid-latitudes on the nucleus. A qualitative modelling of the coma produced consistent results with a wide range of dust sizes (0.80 to 800 micro-m), with inversely correlated densities (0.003 to 3.0 g cm^-3). Images taken with Vj and r-Sloan filters showed a greater concentration of dust in the first two shells, and an increasing density of radicals emitting in the B and V band-passes from the third shell outwards. Abstract

The hippocampus consists of anatomically and functionally distinct subfields that may be differentially involved in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Here we, the Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis Bipolar Disorder workinggroup, study hippocampal subfield volumetry in BD. T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans from 4,698 individuals (BD = 1,472, healthy controls [HC] = 3,226) from 23 sites worldwide were processed with FreeSurfer. We used linear mixed-effects models and mega-analysis to investigate differences in hippocampal subfield volumes between BD and HC, followed by analyses of clinical characteristics and medication use. BD showed significantly smaller volumes of the whole hippocampus (Cohen's d = -0.20), cornu ammonis (CA)1 (d = -0.18), CA2/3 (d = -0.11), CA4 (d = -0.19), molecular layer (d = -0.21), granule cell layer of dentate gyrus (d = -0.21), hippocampal tail (d = -0.10), subiculum (d = -0.15), presubiculum (d = -0.18), and hippocampal amygdala transition area (d = -0.17) compared to HC. Lithium users did not show volume differences compared to HC, while non-users did. Antipsychotics or antiepileptic use was associated with smaller volumes. In this largest study of hippocampal subfields in BD to date, we show widespread reductions in nine of 12 subfields studied. The associations were modulated by medication use and specifically the lack of differences between lithium users and HC supports a possible protective role of lithium in BD.

18. Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov exhibits a structure similar to native Solar System comets

Abstract

We processed images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to investigate any morphological features in the inner coma suggestive of a peculiar activity on the nucleus of the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov. The coma shows an evident elongation, in the position angle (PA) ~0-180d direction, which appears related to the presence of a jet originating from a single active source on the nucleus. A counterpart of this jet directed towards PA ~10d was detected through analysis of the changes of the inner coma morphology on HST images taken in different dates and processed with different filters. These findings indicate that the nucleus is probably rotating with a spin axis projected near the plane of the sky and oriented at PA ~100d-280d, and that the active source is lying in a near-equatorial position. Subsequent observations of HST allowed us to determine the direction of the spin axis at RA=17h20m+/-15d and Dec = -35d+\-10d., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures (low resolution). Abstract

Cell fate is determined by specific transcription programs that are essential for tissue homeostasis and regeneration. The E3-ligases RING1A and B represent the core activity of the Polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) that deposits repressive histone H2AK119 mono-ubiquitination (H2AK119ub1), which is essential for mouse intestinal homeostasis by preserving stem cell functions. However, the specific role of different PRC1 forms, which are defined by the six distinct PCGF1–6 paralogs, remains largely unexplored in vivo. We report that PCGF6 regulates mouse intestinal Tuft cell differentiation independently of H2AK119ub1 deposition. We show that PCGF6 chromatin occupancy expands outside Polycomb repressive domains, associating with unique promoter and distal regulatory elements. This occurs in the absence of RING1A/B and involves MGA-mediated E-BOX recognition and specific H3K9me2 promoter deposition. PCGF6 inactivation induces an epithelial autonomous accumulation of Tuft cells that was not phenocopied by RING1A/B loss. This involves direct PCGF6 association with a Tuft cell differentiation program that identified Polycomb-independent properties of PCGF6 in adult tissues homeostasis.

Abstract

Optogenetics enables manipulation of biological processes with light at high spatio-temporal resolution to control the behavior of cells, networks, or even whole animals. In contrast to the performance of excitatory rhodopsins, the effectiveness of inhibitory optogenetic tools is still insufficient. Here we report a two-component optical silencer system comprising photoactivated adenylyl cyclases (PACs) and the small cyclic nucleotide-gated potassium channel SthK. Activation of this 'PAC-K' silencer by brief pulses of low-intensity blue light causes robust and reversible silencing of cardiomyocyte excitation and neuronal firing. In vivo expression of PAC-K in mouse and zebrafish neurons is well tolerated, where blue light inhibits neuronal activity and blocks motor responses. In combination with red-light absorbing channelrhodopsins, the distinct action spectra of PACs allow independent bimodal control of neuronal activity. PAC-K represents a reliable optogenetic silencer with intrinsic amplification for sustained potassium-mediated hyperpolarization, conferring high operational light sensitivity to the cells of interest.

We have developed mouse models to control the specific expression of an oncogenic form of β-catenin (CTNNB1) in combination with MYC activation in Lgr5 + cells of the gastric antrum. We used multiomics approaches applied in vivo and in organoid models to characterize their cooperation in driving gastric tumorigenesis. We report that constitutive β-catenin stabilization in the stomach has negligible oncogenic effects and requires MYC activation to induce gastric tumor formation. Although physiologically low MYC levels in gastric glands limit β-catenin transcriptional activity, increased MYC expression unleashes the WNT oncogenic transcriptional program, promoting β-catenin enhancer invasion without a direct transcriptional cooperation. MYC activation induces a metabolic rewiring that suppresses lysosomal biogenesis through mTOR and ERK activation and MiT/TFE inhibition. This prevents EPCAM degradation by macropinocytosis, promoting β-catenin chromatin accumulation and activation of WNT oncogenic transcription. Our results uncovered a new signaling framework with important implications for the control of gastric epithelial architecture and WNT-dependent oncogenic transformation. Abstract

Extensive observations of comet 260P (McNaught) were carried out between August 2012 and January 2013. The images obtained were used to analyze the inner coma morphology of the comet at resolutions ranging from 250 to about 1000 km/pixel. A deep investigation of the dust features in the inner coma allowed us to identify only a single main active source on the nucleus of the comet, at an estimated latitude of -50 deg +/-15 deg. A thorough analysis of the appearance and of the motion of the morphological structures, supported by graphic simulations of the geometrical conditions of the observations, allowed us to determine a pole orientation located within a circular spot of a 15 deg-radius centered at RA=60 deg, Dec=0 deg. The rotation of the nucleus seems to occur on a single axis and is not chaotic, furthermore no precession effects could be estimated from our measurements. The comet's spin axis never reached the plane of the sky from October 2012 to January 2013; during this period it did not change its direction significantly (less than 30 deg), thus giving us the opportunity to observe mainly structures such as bow-shaped jets departing from the single active source located on the comet's nucleus. Only during the months of August 2012 and January 2013 the polar axis was directed towards the Earth at an angle of about 45 deg from the plane of the sky; this made it possible to observe the development of faint structures like fragments of shells or spirals. Abstract

Extensive observations of comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) were carried out between August 2004 and May 2005. The images obtained were used to investigate the comet's inner coma features at resolutions between 350 and 1500 km/pixel. A photometric analysis of the dust outflowing from the comet's nucleus and the study of the motion of the morphological structures in the inner coma indicated that the rotation period of the nucleus was most likely around 0.74 days. A thorough investigation of the inner coma morphology allowed us to observe two main active sources on the comet's nucleus, at a latitude of +85{\deg} \pm 5{\deg} and +45{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}, respectively. Further sources have been observed, but their activity ran out quite rapidly over time; the most relevant was at latcom. = 25{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}. Graphic simulations of the geometrical conditions of observation of the inner coma were compared with the images and used to determine a pole orientation at RA=95{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}, Dec=+35{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}.
