Abstract

We consider laminar flow of incompressible electrolytes in long, straight channels driven by pressure and electro-osmosis. We use a Hilbert space eigenfunction expansion to address the general problem of an arbitrary cross section and obtain general results in linear-response theory for the mass and charge transport coefficients which satisfy Onsager relations. In the limit of non-overlapping Debye layers the transport coefficients are simply expressed in terms of parameters of the electrolyte as well as the hydraulic radius R=2A/P with A and P being the cross-sectional area and perimeter, respectively. Abstract

Abstract

We study the electro-hydrodynamics of the Debye screening layer that arises in an aqueous binary solution near a planar insulating wall when applying a spatially modulated AC-voltage. Combining this with first order perturbation theory we establish the governing equations for the full non-equilibrium problem and obtain analytic solutions in the bulk for the pressure and velocity fields of the electrolyte and for the electric potential. We find good agreement between the numerics of the full problem and the analytics of the linear theory. Our work provides the theoretical foundations of circuit models discussed in the literature. Abstract

Several epidemiological studies emphasize the consumption of processed meat products as a risk factor of colorectal cancer, linking N-nitrosamines (NAs) formed during nitrite curing to this cancer risk. The occurrence of volatile N-nitrosamines (VNAs) has over the years been intensively studied while the knowledge on the occurrence and toxicity of non-volatile N-nitrosamines (NVNAs) is still limited. Therefore, this study focuses on quantification of both VNAs and NVNAs in a large selection of processed meat products. For this purpose, a robust, specific and sensitive method allowing analysis of seven VNAs and two NVNAs was optimized and validated using kassler, sausage, and salami. The limit of quantification achieved was 0.1 - 0.5 ng·g-1 for most of the VNA, and 2.3 - 4.2 ng·g-1 for the NVNA. In one hundred commercial samples N-nitroso-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (NTCA) was the most frequently detected (97 samples) among all target NAs and it was found at concentrations ranging from 3.1 ng·g-1 to 1660 ng·g-1. The samples contained relatively low mean levels of the individual VNAs (≤1 ng·g-1). The levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR), and N-nitrosopiperidine (NPIP) ranged from non-detectable to 3.8, 10.8 and 2.9 ng·g-1, respectively. A correlation between the detected residual levels of nitrite and/or nitrate and concentrations of individual NAs could not be demonstrated. Based on principle component analysis (PCA) some correlations between salami, sausage and bacon and NAs could be shown.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the values of movement and physical activity (MoPA) using government policy documents (e.g., laws and curricula) on early childhood education and care (ECEC) from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. This descriptive, comparative study was designed based on curriculum theory and used word count and content analyses to identify similarities and differences in the occurrence of MoPA in the ECEC policies of Nordic countries. Seven terms were identified as MoPA-related in Nordic policy documents. These terms occurred in various content contexts: development, environment, expression, health and well-being, learning and play, albeit sparsely. MoPA was referred to as both a goal in and of itself and as a means of achieving other goals (e.g., learning or development in another area). Formulations specifically dedicated to MoPA as a goal were present in the Danish and Finnish curricula and, to some extent, also in the Norwegian curriculum, while the Icelandic and Swedish curricula mentioned MoPA mostly as a means. Findings indicated that MoPA, which is important for children’s development, health, and well-being, is a low-priority value, to varying degrees, in the ECEC policies enacted by Nordic countries and the guidance provided to educators and stakeholders therein is inexplicit.

Abstract

Background Safely reducing red blood cell transfusions can prevent transfusion-related adverse effects, conserve the blood supply, and reduce health care costs. Both anemia and red blood cell transfusion are independently associated with AKI, but observational data are insufficient to determine whether a restrictive approach to transfusion can be used without increasing AKI risk. Methods In a prespecified kidney substudy of a randomized noninferiority trial, we compared a restrictive threshold for red blood cell transfusion (transfuse if hemoglobin= 0.3 mg/dl within 48 hours of surgery, or >= 50% within 7 days of surgery. Abstract

In a drinking water distribution system, little is known about the characteristics of a microbiological pollution, how it enters the system, and how it can be detected. The drinking water industry has relied on various pollution indicators, through grab sampling and laboratory analyses, revealing results long after the water has been used. To be able to react more proactively to pollution events, many drinking water distributors supplement grab sampling with proportional sampling and/or real-time sensors. We have tested the ability of a new bacteria monitor to detect four different pollution events: wastewater intrusion, rainwater runoff, resuspension of drinking water sediments, and bird droppings entering the distribution system. The monitor response, in terms of bacteria and abiotic particle concentrations, was compared with traditional laboratory methods. The results illustrate the benefits of using such real-time bacteria sensors for monitoring the dynamics of drinking water microbiology and for early warning of potential pollution events.

Abstract

The European project ‘Early Change’ (http://earlychange.teithe.gr) attempts to evaluate the quality of early childhood education (ECE) environments of six European countries, Greece, Portugal, Finland, Denmark, Cyprus and Romania. The purpose of this paper is to compare the level of two dimensions of the process quality of these environments a) Space & Furnishings, and b) Personal Care Routines. Theorists, practitioners and researchers agree that in order to provide qualitative education to young children, one of the basic needs of all children must be met; that need is the protection of their health and their safety. A high quality early childhood education program must contain a safe and stimulating environment for the child (Lindsey, 1998). Such an environment includes indoor space, outdoor space, furniture, and room arrangement, and it is considered an integral part of a high quality early childhood program. 117 early educators from the six participating countries attended the training seminars about the evaluation of ECE quality using the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale-R (ECERS-R). The trained educators evaluated the 8 indicators of the subscale ‘space & furnishings’ and the six indicators of the subscale ‘personal care routines’ in approximately 600 early childhood classrooms from six European countries. The results of this study highlight the similarities and differences concerning the specific dimensions of the process quality of ECE environments in six European countries, and reflect the diversity of ECE environment across these countries. The findings of this study may provide a valuable insight to researchers and educational policy makers for an enhanced understanding of the cultural diversities and the strengthening of the common values and targets of the European Union.

Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The biological factors determining a successful spinal fusion have not yet been fully determined.PURPOSE: To determine the influence of graft cell vigor on fusion rate and fusion mass using in vitro osteoblast proliferation as a predictor.STUDY DESIGN: Animal study randomizing to posterolateral fusion with autograft with or without pedicle-screw instrumentation.PATIENT SAMPLE: Twenty adult Göttingen mini-pigs.OUTCOME MEASURES: Fusion rate measured both with X-ray and computed tomography (CT) as well as amount of fusion mass determined with three-dimensional CT.METHODS: Animals underwent posterolateral fusion with autograft either with or without pedicle-screw instrumentation. Additional graft was harvested for osteoblastlike cell culture. Cells were counted after 3 weeks, and their proliferative capacity was correlated to fusion rate and fusion amount.RESULTS: Cell count was significantly higher in the fused animals (pCONCLUSIONS: The achievement of a solid spinal fusion using autograft is related to properties of the bone-forming cells in the graft and fusion bed. Most likely it is the number of cells and not their proliferative capacity that is the most important factor.
