Abstract: Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract: Mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) constitutes a major fraction of global soil carbon and is assumed less sensitive to climate than particulate organic carbon (POC) due to protection by minerals. Despite its importance for long-term carbon storage, the response of MAOC to changing climates in drylands, which cover more than 40% of the global land area, remains unexplored. Here we assess topsoil organic carbon fractions across global drylands using a standardized field survey in 326 plots from 25 countries and 6 continents. We find that soil biogeochemistry explained the majority of variation in both MAOC and POC. Both carbon fractions decreased with increases in mean annual temperature and reductions in precipitation, with MAOC responding similarly to POC. Therefore, our results suggest that ongoing climate warming and aridification may result in unforeseen carbon losses across global drylands, and that the protective role of minerals may not dampen these effects.

Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract: Semiarid Patagonia represents 25% of the rangeland area in Argentina, and sheep overgrazing has degraded about a third of it in the past. In this century, depleted domestic stocks have mostly stabilized, but Guanaco populations have grown. These native camelids share habitat and diets with sheep, but their effect on vegetation is poorly understood and has long been debated. We set up an exclusion experiment in Monte León and Cañadón Vaca, a semiarid shrubland grassland in southern Patagonia, currently grazed only by guanacos. Vegetation baselines were studied in 2016 in twelve plots, and half of them were protected from guanaco grazing. Thirty-six plots were cleared to study revegetation. Vegetation was reassessed in 2021, and changes were evaluated using a paired t -test. Within protected plots, vegetation cover increased, bare soil diminished, and vegetated patches grew in size, but the density of the patch-interpatch arrangement did not change. Biodiversity, measured by richness and the Shannon-Wiener (SW) index, grew significantly. Nutrient recycling increased, as did the Stability and Infiltration Land Function indexes, although these last differences were not significant. Vegetation cover under guanaco grazing also increased, mainly due to the growth of dwarf shrubs, a typical tendency in sheep grazing-induced transitions in the region. Vegetated patches under grazing fragmented, resulting in smaller patches and denser patch structures, while diversity and land function indexes remained unchanged. Young plants established in cleared plots without guanacos showed higher cover density and individual size. These effects are similar to those observed in numerous experimental sheep exclosures. Guanaco grazing may thus prevent restoration and contribute to the generalized land degradation processes that overgrazing has been causing in Patagonia for over a century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: El Jardín Botánico Nacional es una institución científica, docente y recreativa; con una extensión de 478 hectáreas y aproximadamente 50 kilómetros de carreteras que promueve una oferta turística ecoamigable. Sin embargo, posee un parque vehicular deteriorado e insuficiente que no permite lograr mayor eficiencia en su gestión turística. Ante este escenario, se propone un proyecto de Movilidad Sostenible que incluye una revolución en el sistema energético y en la experiencia del visitante. La propuesta integra un sistema de transportación basado en vehículos eléctricos con una solinera como estación de carga a través de energía solar. Entre los principales beneficios se encuentra la optimización de procesos en área de logística. Asimismo, favorece a quienes visitan los atractivos del Jardín a partir de una movilidad sostenible donde se destacan atributos como: poca contaminación sonora, conectividad con el exterior y el interior del Jardín, mayor confort y personalización del servicio y menos inconformidades por roturas. Adicionalmente, mejora el desempeño de la organización al reducir en un 40% el gasto energético actual del transporte. La propuesta, añade valor dentro de la labor educativa que promueve la entidad ya que concientiza sobre el uso de fuentes alternativas, reduciendo el empleo de equipos alimentados por combustibles fósiles; así como el impacto nocivo de estos sobre la amplia colección de especies existente en el Jardín. Por otra parte, implementa la política institucional de “emisión cero”, contribuyendo a la adaptación al cambio climático, e influyendo en el comportamiento de visitantes nacionales y extranjeros hacia una movilidad más ecológica.

Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure. This study used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer remote sensing data and surface energy balance algorithms to quantify changes in surface energy budgets corresponding to changes in land use in Beijing from 2000 to 2015. Land use was reclassified by considering land use intensity. The difference in the latent heat flux (LE) and net radiation (Rn) (LE−Rn) expressed the warming or cooling effect. The results showed that: (i) The increasing trend of net longwave radiation in Beijing offset the decreasing trend of net shortwave radiation. The Rn changed slightly, while the LE and LE−Rn showed a significant increase of 0.55 and 0.56 W/(m²∙year), respectively. The findings indicated that considering only radiative forcing, or even Rn, was not enough to measure the impacts of land use change on the energy budget. (ii) The order of Rn, LE, and LE−Rn values from high to low were natural and seminatural areas, cropland, mixed pixel areas, urban expansion areas, and old urban areas. Compared with natural and seminatural areas, the changing LE−Rn trend in the other four land use types decreased with the increase in human impact intensity, indicating that human activities weakened the positive change trend of LE−Rn and increased the warming effect. (iii) Although the temporal trend of LE increased in Beijing from 2000 to 2015, the effect of Rn on LE−Rn was greater than that of LE, especially in the four land use types affected by human activities. The results for surface temperature in various land use types confirmed this point. This study highlights the energy budget differences of various land use types affected by human activities. It makes an important contribution to understanding the urban heat island effect from a biogeophysical perspective.

Abstract: El centro de la provincia tiene, desde hace años, graves problemas de desertificación, con pérdida de cobertura vegetal, suelo y capacidad productiva (Del Valle et al., 1997). Los departamentos Magallanes, Río Chico y Corpen Aike han sufrido con mayor intensidad un notable y paulatino descenso de la carga ovina debido a graves problemas de erosión (Andrade, 2002, 2005). Además, la Meseta Central y el Departamento Deseado en particular, han sufrido las consecuencias de la erupción del volcán Hudson (agosto 1991), la cual ha sido muchas veces relativizada cuando se la analiza al momento de explicar la crisis del sector ganadero en dicha zona (Vázquez, 2012). Una de las consecuencias más notorias del deterioro de estas áreas es el abandono de stablecimientos, notable durante los años ´90 y que no se ha detenido posteriormente. La mayor parte de los establecimientos desocupados se encuentran en la Meseta Central, zona que se caracteriza por terrenos de baja productividad primaria, menor superficie y menores inversiones (Barbería, 1994). En la década del 90 se estimó que 300 establecimientos ganaderos de los 1261 existentes en ese periodo fueron abandonados y alrededor de setecientos no cubrían los costos operativos (Andrade et al., 2010; Barbería, 1994). Estos establecimientos se constituyen en un problema en tanto su potencialidad productiva permanece ociosa. Además, generan una presión de predadores sobre los establecimientos con stock y dificultades a los productores vecinos, que deben hacerse cargo de la totalidad del mantenimiento de los alambrados perimetrales, entre otras actividades que, además, involucran inversiones muchas veces importantes. El abandono de la infraestructura dificulta también la posible incorporación de estas tierras a establecimientos en producción que puedan considerar la opción de expandirse territorialmente por compra o alquiler (Andrade, 2012; Andrade et al., 2010). Por otro lado, según los últimos análisis económicos (Bonil et al., 2017; Roa et al., 2021; Schorr et al., 2015), es claro que los dueños no viven exclusivamente del campo, ya que las rentabilidades son negativas, por lo que el productor debe contar con otras alternativas de ingresos. Ante esta situación, se propuso realizar el presente trabajo en forma articulada entre Instituciones y Organizaciones vinculadas al sector (FIAS, CAP, SENASA, UNPA, INTA, IPG, RENATRE) para determinar la superficie y cantidad de establecimientos desocupados y sin producción agropecuaria, con el objetivo de generar información estratégica que contribuya a dimensionar y abordar las diversas aristas que esta problemática presenta en Santa Cruz. La información relevada permitirá caracterizar de manera clara la situación respecto del despoblamiento del área analizada y servirá de base de análisis para elaborar propuestas de abordaje de esta problemática en relación con el Plan de Desarrollo Estratégico del Sector Agropecuario Provincial (en el marco de la Ley provincial 3692/2020). Además, será de utilidad para planes de ocupación territorial, para la generación de propuestas a nivel de políticas públicas y para realizar recomendaciones a productores, como así también para implementar estrategias de control de especies predadoras en pos del desarrollo de una ganadería extensiva sustentable. Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure.

Abstract: The South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) provides significant benefits in facilitating water security and improving ecology in northern China. However, few studies have estimated the water value of the SNWD and the corresponding subsequent subsidies of the ecological migrants in Xichuan County displaced by the project. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE), this study analyzed the water ecosystem changes in Xichuan County in 2000–2020 and valued the water transfer of the SNWD. We calculated the water cost, the water value of the trunk line project, and the four provinces (Hebei, Henan, Beijing, and Tianjin) of CNY 4.04, 39.64, and 120.93 billion, respectively, and the proportion of the three was 1:10:30 during 2014–2020. The water ecosystem area showed a rapid increase when the SNWD became operational since the end of 2014. The subsequent annual subsidy gap of ecological migrants was CNY 0.84 billion, which only accounted for 4.31% of the gross profit of SNWD. Our results imply that relevant water sectors have sufficient profits to support corresponding subsequent subsidies for ecological migrants. Ecological migrants are a major challenge for water transfer projects. Overall, this study fills a gap of interactions between subsequent policies and ecological migrants and provides a typical case for managing the migration problem caused by sustainable water management worldwide.

Abstract: La variación temporal del índice NDVI predice los cambios temporales de la cobertura vegetal en las tierras secas de la Patagonia argentina. En las tierras secas, la vegetación natural es una fuente importante de sustento para las comunidades que viven en ellas, dado que la utilizan como alimento, combustible y forraje para el ganado. Además de los bienes y servicios que brinda a las comunidades, la vegetación de las tierras secas también juega un papel importante en muchos procesos ecosistémicos, como por ejemplo el reciclaje de nutrientes o la protección del suelo frente a la erosión. Por lo tanto, el monitoreo a largo plazo de la cobertura vegetal es clave para la toma de decisiones en la gestión de estas regiones. En este estudio, analizamos la variación de la cobertura vegetal en 239 sitios de una red de monitoreo a largo plazo (red MARAS), en uno de los biomas de tierras secas más grandes del mundo: la estepa patagónica argentina. A continuación, la relacionamos con la variación de diferentes períodos del Índice de Vegetación de Diferencia Normalizada (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI), obtenido del sensor MODIS, que sirve como variable predictora. El modelo empírico ajustado explicó hasta un 40% de la variación en la cobertura vegetal medida a campo. Con este sencillo modelo empírico hemos estimado y cartografiado los cambios temporales en la cobertura vegetal de un extenso bioma de tierras secas a bajo coste. The adjusted empirical model explained up to 40% of the variation in the vegetation cover measured in the field. Abstract: Prólogo de la presente edición: “En los últimos cincuenta años hemos observado cómo ha ido reduciéndose el stock ganadero de las provincias patagónicas. Se han ensayado muchas estrategias de fortalecimiento de la ganadería que no han dado los resultados esperados. La mayor parte de ellas estuvieron orientadas a reposición animal. Si bien científicos como el Ing. Alberto Soriano lo expresaron en 1950 nos faltó convicción para reconocer que la ganadería patagónica se basa en los forrajes que consumen sus animales. Y es allí donde debemos poner nuestras prioridades. Sin una buena alimentación no es posible tener buena reproducción, sanidad, calidad de lana y carne y avanzar en programas de genética. Por otro lado se aprecia un deterioro de los recursos naturales como consecuencia de las actividades humanas sin presupuestos de uso. 44. Dinámica del agua en el suelo bajo un ensayo manipulativo de lluvias

Abstract: Water is the main control of biological processes in arid and semiarid sytems. A rain interception experiment was conducted in order to evaluate changes in water availability of the superficial soil in a grass steppe of the Dry Magellanic Steppe (South Patagonia, Argentina). Treatments included: 50% interception (dry year simulation), control and 50% more rain added through watering during summer (wet year simulation). Three replications were available in each treatement. Each plot had a MPS-6 soil matrix water potential and a ECRN-100 temperature probe. Rain was recorded using a Decagon device ECRN – 100 pluviometer. Data was recorded hourly using a Decagon EM50 logger. Grazing was excluded in all plots. The hypothesis was that watering during summer would prevent the soil from drying and that rain interception would generate a long and intense drought during summer. Results indicate that the soil remained humid most of the time in the watered treatment, but nevertheless some short dry periods were registered when plots did not receive rain pulses between watering events. As hypothesized, soils in the interception plots showed longer and more intense drought periods, but this happend only during fall. At the beggining of winter soils reached field capacity in all plots and remained so until spring. In this way, drought in the superficial soil occured in brief periods during the warm season and depended on summer rains., En ambientes áridos y semiáridos la disponibilidad de agua es el factor principal que controla los procesos biológicos. En un pastizal de la Estepa Magallánica Seca, sur de Santa Cruz, se instaló un ensayo de intercepción de lluvias con el fin de evaluar los cambios en la disponibilidad hídrica en la superficie del suelo. Se realizaron tres tratamientos: sequía con intercepción del 50% (simula año seco), testigo y un tratamiento con riego (50% más de lluvia en el verano). Cada tratamiento tuvo tres repeticiones y en todos los casos se excluyó el pastoreo. El experimento contó con sensores de potencial hídrico mátrico (MPS-6) y temperatura de suelo (un sensor Decagon ECT por parcela a 10 cm de profundidad), y un pluviómetro (Decagon device ECRN – 100), todos conectados a un logger Decagon EM50 con frecuencia de registro horaria. La hipótesis de este trabajo fue que el riego durante el verano evitaría que el suelo se seque y que la intercepción de lluvia generaría un período seco más intenso y prolongado durante esta estación. En general, el suelo estuvo húmedo en el tratamiento irrigado, aunque se generaron breves períodos secos en los casos de lluvias escasas entre riegos. Las parcelas de intercepción tuvieron un período seco más intenso y más prolongado en el tiempo tal como se supuso, pero esto ocurrió solamente en el otoño. A principios de invierno el suelo alcanzó valores de capacidad de campo y permaneció así durante la primavera. Los períodos secos en la superficie del suelo fueron breves, ocurrieron en la estación cálida y dependieron de las lluvias estivales.
