Abstract: Context. Spectroscopic surveys like APOGEE, GALAH, and LAMOST have significantly advanced our understanding of the Milky Way by providing extensive stellar parameters and chemical abundances. Complementing these, photometric surveys with narrow/medium-band filters, such as the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), offer the potential to estimate stellar parameters and abundances for a much larger number of stars. Aims. This work develops methodologies to extract stellar atmospheric parameters and selected chemical abundances from S-PLUS photometric data, which spans ~3000 square degrees using seven narrowband and five broadband filters. Methods. Using 66 S-PLUS colors, we estimated parameters based on training samples from LAMOST, APOGEE, and GALAH, applying Cost-Sensitive Neural Networks (NN) and Random Forests (RF). We tested for spurious correlations by including abundances not covered by the S-PLUS filters and evaluated NN and RF performance, with NN consistently outperforming RF. Including Teff and log g as features improved accuracy by ~3%. We retained only parameters with a goodness-of-fit above 50%. Results. Our approach provides reliable estimates of fundamental parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) and abundance ratios such as [{\alpha}/Fe], [Al/Fe], [C/Fe], [Li/Fe], and [Mg/Fe] for ~5 million stars, with goodness-of-fit >60%. Additional ratios like [Cu/Fe], [O/Fe], and [Si/Fe] were derived but are less accurate. Validation using star clusters, TESS, and J-PLUS data confirmed the robustness of our methodology. Conclusions. By leveraging S-PLUS photometry and machine learning, we present a cost-effective alternative to high-resolution spectroscopy for deriving stellar parameters and abundances, enabling insights into Milky Way stellar populations and supporting future classification efforts., Comment: 23 pages, 14 Figures

2. A Performance Increment Strategy for Semantic Segmentation of Low-Resolution Images from Damaged Roads

Abstract: Autonomous driving needs good roads, but 85% of Brazilian roads have damages that deep learning models may not regard as most semantic segmentation datasets for autonomous driving are high-resolution images of well-maintained urban roads. A representative dataset for emerging countries consists of low-resolution images of poorly maintained roads and includes labels of damage classes; in this scenario, three challenges arise: objects with few pixels, objects with undefined shapes, and highly underrepresented classes. To tackle these challenges, this work proposes the Performance Increment Strategy for Semantic Segmentation (PISSS) as a methodology of 14 training experiments to boost performance. With PISSS, we reached state-of-the-art results of 79.8 and 68.8 mIoU on the Road Traversing Knowledge (RTK) and Technik Autonomer Systeme 500 (TAS500) test sets, respectively. Furthermore, we also offer an analysis of DeepLabV3+ pitfalls for small object segmentation.

3. Understanding Code Understandability Improvements in Code Reviews

Abstract: Motivation: Code understandability is crucial in software development, as developers spend 58% to 70% of their time reading source code. Improving it can improve productivity and reduce maintenance costs. Problem: Experimental studies often identify factors influencing code understandability in controlled settings but overlook real-world influences like project culture, guidelines, and developers' backgrounds. Ignoring these factors may yield results with limited external validity. Objective: This study investigates how developers enhance code understandability through code review comments, assuming that code reviewers are specialists in code quality. Method and Results: We analyzed 2,401 code review comments from Java open-source projects on GitHub, finding that over 42% focus on improving code understandability. We further examined 385 comments specifically related to this aspect and identified eight categories of concerns, such as inadequate documentation and poor identifiers. Notably, 83.9% of suggestions for improvement were accepted and integrated, with fewer than 1% later reverted. We identified various types of patches that enhance understandability, from simple changes like removing unused code to context-dependent improvements such as optimizing method calls. Additionally, we evaluated four well-known linters for their ability to flag these issues, finding they cover less than 30%, although many could be easily added as new rules. Implications: Our findings encourage the development of tools to enhance code understandability, as accepted changes can serve as reliable training data for specialized machine-learning models. Abstract: Tree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.3 to 3195 years) and show that the pace of life for trees can be accurately classified into four demographic functional types. We found emergent patterns in the strength of trade-offs between growth and longevity across a temperature gradient. Furthermore, we show that the diversity of life history traits varies predictably across forest biomes, giving rise to a positive relationship between trait diversity and productivity. Our pan-latitudinal assessment provides new insights into the demographic mechanisms that govern the carbon turnover rate across forest biomes.

7. Misinformation Dissemination: Effects of Network Density in Segregated Communities

Abstract: Understanding the relationship between network features and misinformation propagation is crucial for mitigating the spread of false information. Here, we investigate how network density and segregation affect the dissemination of misinformation using a susceptible-infectious-recovered framework. We find that a higher density consistently increases the proportion of misinformation believers. Abstract: An amplitude analysis of $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. A resonant structure of spin-parity $0^+$ is observed in the $D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ invariant-mass spectrum with a significance of $5.3\,\sigma$. The mass and width of the state, modeled with a Breit$-$Wigner lineshape, are determined to be $2883\pm11\pm6\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2$ and $87_{-47}^{+22}\pm6\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}$ respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These properties and the quark content are consistent with those of the open-charm tetraquark state $T_{cs 0}^{*}(2870)^0$ observed previously in the $D^+ K^-$ final state of the $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^+ K^-$ decay. This result confirms the existence of the $T_{cs 0}^{*}(2870)^0$ state in a new decay mode. The $T_{cs1}^{*}(2900)^0$ state, reported in the $B^-\rightarrow D^- D^+ K^-$ decay, is also searched for in the $D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ invariant-mass spectrum of the $B^- \rightarrow D^- D^0 K_\mathrm{S}^0$ decay, without finding evidence for it., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and information, are available at https://lbfence.cern.ch/alcm/public/analysis/full-details/3162/ (LHCb public pages)

9. Probabilistic well-posedness of generalized cubic nonlinear Schr\'odinger equations with strong dispersion using higher order expansions

Abstract: In this paper, we study the local well-posedness of the cubic Schr\"odinger equation $$(i\partial_t + \mathcal{L}) u = \pm |u|^2 u \qquad \textrm{on} \quad \ I\times \mathbb{R}^d ,$$ with initial data being a Wiener randomization at unit scale of a given function $f$ and $\mathcal{L}$ being an operator of degree $\sigma\geq 2$. In particular, we prove that a solution exists almost-surely locally in time provided $f\in H^{S}_{x}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ with $S>\frac{2-\sigma}{4}$ for $d\leq \frac{3\sigma}{2}$, i.e. even if the initial datum is taken in certain negative order Sobolev spaces. The solutions are constructed as a sum of an explicit multilinear expansion of the flow in terms of the random initial data and of an additional smoother remainder term with deterministically subcritical regularity. We develop the framework of directional space-time norms to control the (probabilistic) multilinear expansion and the (deterministic) remainder term and to obtain improved bilinear probabilistic-deterministic Strichartz estimates.

10. Lyapunov stability under $q$-dilatation and $q$-contraction of coordinates

Abstract: This study examines the Lyapunov stability under coordinate $q$-contraction and $q$-dilatation in three dynamical systems: the discrete-time dissipative H\'enon map, and the conservative, non-integrable, continuous-time H\'enon-Heiles and diamagnetic Kepler problems. The stability analysis uses the $q$-deformed Jacobian and $q$-derivative, with trajectory stability assessed for $q > 1$ (dilatation) and $q < 1$ (contraction). Analytical curves in the parameter space mark boundaries of distinct low-periodic motions in the H\'enon map. Numerical simulations compute the maximal Lyapunov exponent across the parameter space, in Poincar\'e surfaces of section, and as a function of total energy in the conservative systems. Simulations show that $q$-contraction ($q$-dilatation) generally decreases (increases) positive Lyapunov exponents relative to the $q = 1$ case, while both transformations tend to increase Lyapunov exponents for regular orbits. 12. Rare events for low energy domain in bouncing ball model

Abstract: The probability distribution for multiple collisions observed in the chaotic low energy domain in the bouncing ball model is shown to be scaling invariant concerning the control parameters. The model considers the dynamics of a bouncing ball particle colliding elastically with two rigid walls. One is fixed, and the other one moves periodically in time. The dynamics is described by a two-dimensional mapping for the variables velocity of the particle and phase of the moving wall. For a specific combination of velocity and phase, the particle may experience a type of rare collision named successive collisions. We show that a power law describes the probability distribution of the multiple impacts and is scaling invariant to the control parameter.

13. Study of helium diffusion in yttria: A multiscale approach based on the density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo, with transmission electron microscopy and thermo-desorption spectroscopy

Abstract: A known issue for future nuclear reactors is helium accumulation inside the steel structure materials, responsible for structural issues such as embrittlement and cracking. One possible solution is using new types of reinforced steel, such as oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel. It consists of adding oxide nanoparticles to the Fe-based material, especially yttrium oxide (yttria, Y$_2$O$_3$), improving its properties. Therefore, one first step is understanding the helium diffusion inside this system. Very little is known about helium inside yttria, with most studies being theoretical ones. Based on this context, this work proposes a combined theoretical and experimental multiscale approach to investigate helium diffusion inside yttria. The theoretical approach starts with the density functional theory, used to model the atomic yttria cell and determine helium insertion sites. The transitions between the sites were described using the NEB method. Kinetic Monte Carlo was then employed to obtain the interstitial diffusion coefficient expression. It showed a limited diffusion at temperatures below 600 K, which may indicate a tendency for He to be blocked in the oxide. Then, the charged vacancies were explored. It showed that the vacancy further reduces helium diffusion. Finally, it was demonstrated that helium spreads across different vacancies and interstitial sites. The experimental part involved implanting helium ions at 50 keV in samples with nanometric or micrometric grains. Then, the specimens were characterised with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermo-desorption spectroscopy (TDS) techniques. TEM did not evidence detectable bubbles even at the highest studied fluence (1\time 10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$). The TDS highlighted different mechanisms for helium diffusion and the grain size's role, providing a model for diffusion coefficient calculation based on interstitial diffusion.

Abstract: A study of $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}$ and $\it{\Xi}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}$ decays to $\it{\Lambda} h^{+} h^{\prime -}$ $(h^{(\prime)}=\pi, K)$ is performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1$-$2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}_{\it{c}}^+(\to\it{\Lambda}\pi^+)\pi^-$ decay as control channel. The decays $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}\pi^+\pi^-$ and $\it{\Xi}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}K^-\pi^+$ are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, $CP$ asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for $CP$ violation in the $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0}\to\it{\Lambda}K^+K^-$ decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric $\it{\Lambda}_{\it{b}}^\rm{0} \to \it{N}^{*+} \it{K}^-$ decay amplitude. Abstract: Stochastic dominance of a random variable by a convex combination of its independent copies has recently been shown to hold within the relatively narrow class of distributions with concave odds function. We show that a key property for this stochastic dominance result to hold is the subadditivity of the cumulative distribution function of the reciprocal of the random variable of interest, referred to as the inverted distribution. This enlarges significantly the family of distributions for which the dominance is verified. Moreover, we study the relation between the class of distributions with concave odds function and the class we introduce showing conditions under which the concavity of the odds function implies the subadditivity of inverted distribution-

16. Interfacial Properties of Composites Based on h-BN and c-BN in Function of Temperature: a Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract: Using molecular dynamics simulations and the ReaxFF force field, we studied a composite based on cubic (c-BN) and hexagonal (h-BN) boron nitride subjected to different temperatures to verify the possibility of a c-BN to h-BN phase transition. Our results demonstrate that the surface termination of c-BN (whether B- or N-terminated) is a crucial factor in the phase transition. The B-terminated c-BN surface presents a lower potential energy than the N-terminated one. However, compared to the potential energy of h-BN, the B- (N-) terminated c-BN surface has a lower (higher) potential energy than h-BN. As the temperature increases, the potential energy of the B-terminated c-BN surface gradually approaches that of h-BN, leading to the beginning of detachment into an h-BN layer around 700 K. 17. Mode-selective Raman imaging of metal-organic frameworks reveals surface heterogeneities of single HKUST-1 crystals

Abstract: Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are nanoporous materials with high surface-to-volume ratio that have potential applications as gas sorbents. Sample quality is, however, often compromised and it is unclear how defects and surface contaminants affect the spectral properties of single MOF crystals. Raman micro-spectroscopy is a powerful tool for characterizing MOFs, yet spatial spectral heterogeneity distributions of single MOF crystals have not been reported so far. In this work, we use Raman micro-spectroscopy to characterize spatially isolated, single crystals of the MOF species HKUST-1. In a first step, we validate HKUST-1's Raman spectrum based on DFT simulations and we identify a previously unreported vibrational feature. In a second step, we acquire diffraction-limited, mode-selective Raman images of a single HKUST-1 crystals that reveal how the spectral variations are distributed across the crystal surface. In a third step, we statistically analyze the measured spectral peak positions and line widths for quantifying the variability occurring within the same crystal as well as between different crystals taken from the same batch. Finally, we explore how multivariate data analysis can aid feature identification in Raman images of single MOF crystals. For enabling validation and reuse, we have made the spectroscopic data and simulation code publicly available.

Abstract: CHANCES, the CHileAN Cluster galaxy Evolution Survey, will study the evolution of galaxies in and around ${\sim}$150 massive galaxy clusters, from the local universe out to z=0.45. CHANCES will use the new 4MOST Spectroscopic Survey Facility on the VISTA 4m telescope to obtain spectra for ${\sim}$500,000 galaxies with magnitudes $r_\mathrm{AB} < 20.5$, providing comprehensive spectroscopic coverage of each cluster out to $5r_{200}$. Its wide and deep scope will trace massive and dwarf galaxies from the surrounding filaments and groups to the cores of galaxy clusters, enabling the study of galaxy pre-processing and the role of the evolving environment on galaxy evolution. In this paper we present and characterize the sample of clusters and superclusters to be targeted by CHANCES. We used literature catalogues based on X-ray emission and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect to define the cluster sample in a homogeneous way, with attention to cluster mass and redshift, as well as the availability of ancillary data. We calibrated literature mass estimates from various surveys against each other and provide an initial mass estimate for each cluster, which we used to define the radial extent of the 4MOST coverage. 19. The influence of free-stream turbulence on the fluctuating loads experienced by a cylinder exposed to a turbulent cross-flow

Abstract: The impact of several $``\text{flavours}"$ of free-stream turbulence (FST) on the structural response of a cantilevered cylinder, subjected to a turbulent cross-flow is investigated. At high enough Reynolds numbers, the cylinder generates a spectrally rich turbulent wake which significantly contributing to the experienced loads. The presence of FST introduces additional complexity through two primary mechanisms: $\textbf{directly}$, by imposing a fluctuating velocity field on the cylinder's surface, and $\textbf{indirectly}$, by altering the vortex shedding dynamics, modifying the experienced loads. We employ concurrent temporally resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and distributed strain measurements using Rayleigh backscattering fibre optic sensors (RBS) to instrument the surrounding velocity field and the structural strain respectively. By using various turbulence-generating grids, and manipulating their distance to the cylinder, we assess a broad FST parameter space allowing us to individually explore the influence of transverse integral length scale ($\mathcal{L}_{13}/D$), and turbulence intensity ($TI$) of the FST on the developing load dynamics. The presence of FST enhances the magnitude of the loads acting on the cylinder. This results from a decreased vortex formation length, increased coherence of regular vortex shedding, and energy associated with this flow structure in the near-wake. The cylinder's structural response is mainly driven by the vortex shedding dynamics, and their modification induced by the presence of FST, ie. the indirect effect outweighs the direct effect. From the explored FST parameter space, $TI$ was seen to be the main driver of enhanced loading conditions, presenting a positive correlation with the fluctuating loads magnitude at the root.

Abstract: This white paper, developed through close collaboration between IBM Research and UIUC researchers within the IIDAI Institute, envisions transforming hybrid cloud systems to meet the growing complexity of AI workloads through innovative, full-stack co-design approaches, emphasizing usability, manageability, affordability, adaptability, efficiency, and scalability. By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as generative and agentic AI, cross-layer automation and optimization, unified control plane, and composable and adaptive system architecture, the proposed framework addresses critical challenges in energy efficiency, performance, and cost-effectiveness. Incorporating quantum computing as it matures will enable quantum-accelerated simulations for materials science, climate modeling, and other high-impact domains. Collaborative efforts between academia and industry are central to this vision, driving advancements in foundation models for material design and climate solutions, scalable multimodal data processing, and enhanced physics-based AI emulators for applications like weather forecasting and carbon sequestration. Research priorities include advancing AI agentic systems, LLM as an Abstraction (LLMaaA), AI model optimization and unified abstractions across heterogeneous infrastructure, end-to-end edge-cloud transformation, efficient programming model, middleware and platform, secure infrastructure, application-adaptive cloud systems, and new quantum-classical collaborative workflows. 21. Extremum and Nash Equilibrium Seeking with Delays and PDEs: Designs & Applications

Abstract: The development of extremum seeking (ES) has progressed, over the past hundred years, from static maps, to finite-dimensional dynamic systems, to networks of static and dynamic agents. Extensions from ODE dynamics to maps and agents that incorporate delays or even partial differential equations (PDEs) is the next natural step in that progression through ascending research challenges. This paper reviews results on algorithm design and theory of ES for such infinite-dimensional systems. Both hyperbolic and parabolic dynamics are presented: delays or transport equations, heat-dominated equation, wave equations, and reaction-advection-diffusion equations. Nash equilibrium seeking (NES) methods are introduced for noncooperative game scenarios of the model-free kind and then specialized to single-agent optimization. Even heterogeneous PDE games, such as a duopoly with one parabolic and one hyperbolic agent, are considered. 22. Graphon-Theoretic Approach to Central Limit Theorems for $\epsilon$-Independence

Abstract: We establish a central limit theorem for the sum of $\epsilon$-independent random variables, extending both the classical and free probability setting. Central to our approach is the use of graphon limits to characterize the limiting distribution, which depends on the asymptotic structure of the underlying graphs governing $\epsilon$-independence. This framework yields a range of exotic limit laws, interpolating between free and classical cases and allowing for mixtures such as free and classical convolutions of the semi-circle and Gaussian distributions. We provide a complete characterization of the limiting law, captured as the distribution of an operator on the full Fock space. We extend our main result to the multivariate setting as well as the non-identically distributed case. 23. A Comparison of Machine Learning Algorithms for Predicting Sea Surface Temperature in the Great Barrier Reef Region

Abstract: Predicting Sea Surface Temperature (SST) in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region is crucial for the effective management of its fragile ecosystems. This study provides a rigorous comparative analysis of several machine learning techniques to identify the most effective method for SST prediction in this area. We evaluate the performance of ridge regression, Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithms. Our results reveal that while LASSO and ridge regression perform well, Random Forest and XGBoost significantly outperform them in terms of predictive accuracy, as evidenced by lower Mean Squared Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Root Mean Squared Prediction Error (RMSPE). Additionally, XGBoost demonstrated superior performance in minimizing Kullback- Leibler Divergence (KLD), indicating a closer alignment of predicted probability distributions with actual observations. These findings highlight the efficacy of using ensemble methods, particularly XGBoost, for predicting sea surface temperatures, making them valuable tools for climatological and environmental modeling.

24. Discussing a transition from bounded to unbounded energy in a time-dependent billiard

Abstract: We revisit a time-dependent, oval-shaped billiard to investigate a phase transition from bounded to unbounded energy growth. In the static case, the phase space exhibits a mixed structure. The chaotic sea in the static scenario leads to average energy growth for a time-dependent boundary. However, inelastic collisions between the particle and the boundary limit this unbounded energy increase. This transition displays properties similar to continuous phase transitions in statistical mechanics, including scale invariance, interrelated critical exponents governed by scaling laws, and an order parameter/susceptibility approaching zero/infinity at the transition. Furthermore, the system exhibits an elementary excitation that promotes particle diffusion and lacks topological defects that provide modifications to the probability distribution function.

25. Error Analysis of Sum-Product Algorithms under Stochastic Rounding

Abstract: The quality of numerical computations can be measured through their forward error, for which finding good error bounds is challenging in general. For several algorithms and using stochastic rounding (SR), probabilistic analysis has been shown to be an effective alternative for obtaining tight error bounds. This analysis considers the distribution of errors and evaluates the algorithm's performance on average. Using martingales and the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality, it provides error bounds that are valid with a certain probability and in $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n}u)$ instead of deterministic worst-case bounds in $\mathcal{O}(nu)$, where $n$ is the number of operations and $u$ is the unit roundoff.In this paper, we present a general method that automatically constructs a martingale for any computation scheme with multi-linear errors based on additions, subtractions, and multiplications. We apply this generalization to algorithms previously studied with SR, such as pairwise summation and the Horner algorithm, and prove equivalent results. We also analyze a previously unstudied algorithm, Karatsuba polynomial multiplication, which illustrates that the method can handle reused intermediate computations.

26. Scenario Tree Reduction via Wasserstein Barycenters

Abstract: Scenario tree reduction techniques are essential for achieving a balance between an accurate representation of uncertainties and computational complexity when solving multistage stochastic programming problems. In the realm of available techniques, the Kovacevic and Pichler algorithm (Ann. Oper. Res., 2015 [1]) stands out for employing the nested distance, a metric for comparing multistage scenario trees. However, dealing with large-scale scenario trees can lead to a prohibitive computational burden due to the algorithm's requirement of solving several large-scale linear problems per iteration. This study concentrates on efficient approaches to solving such linear problems, recognizing that their solutions are Wasserstein barycenters of the tree nodes' probabilities on a given stage. We leverage advanced optimal transport techniques to compute Wasserstein barycenters and significantly improve the computational performance of the Kovacevic and Pichler algorithm. Our boosted variants of this algorithm are benchmarked on several multistage scenario trees. Abstract: Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) has been extensively researched due to its chemical and physical properties that make it suitable for applications in several technologies. Its high thermal conductivity makes HOPG an excellent heat sink, a crucial characteristic for manufacturing targets used in nuclear reactions, such as those proposed by the NUMEN project. However, when subjected to different radiation sources, this material undergoes changes in its crystalline structure, which alters its intended functionality. This study examined HOPG sheets before and after exposure to a 14 MeV neutron beam. Morphological and crystallographic analyses reveal that even minor disruptions in the high atomic ordering result in modifications to its thermal properties. 28. Scaling invariance for the diffusion coefficient in a dissipative standard mapping

Abstract: The unbounded diffusion observed for the standard mapping in a regime of high nonlinearity is suppressed by dissipation due to the violation of Liouville's theorem. The diffusion coefficient becomes important for the description of scaling invariance particularly for the suppression of the unbounded action diffusion. When the dynamics start in the regime of low action, the diffusion coefficient remains constant for a long time, guaranteeing the diffusion for an ensemble of particles. Eventually, it evolves into a regime of decay, marking the suppression of particle action growth. We prove it is scaling invariant for the control parameters and the crossover time identifying the changeover from the constant domain, leading to diffusion, for a regime of decay marking the saturation of the diffusion, scales with the same critical exponent $z=-1$ for a transition from bounded to unbounded diffusion in a dissipative time dependent billiard system.

29. Fundamental limit to cavity linewidth narrowing with single atoms

Abstract: The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a quantum interference phenomenon capable of altering the optical response of a medium, turning an initially opaque atomic sample into transparent for a given radiation field (probe field) upon the incidence of a second one (control field). EIT presents several applications, for instance, considering an atomic system trapped inside an optical cavity, its linewidth can be altered by adjusting the control field strength. For the single-atom regime, we show that there is a fundamental limit for narrowing the cavity linewidth, since quantum fluctuations cannot be disregarded in this regime. With this in mind, in this work we also investigate how the linewidth of an optical cavity behaves for different numbers of atoms trapped inside it, which shows a quantum signature in a strong atom-field coupling regime. Abstract: The $C\!P$ asymmetry and branching fraction of the CKM-suppressed decay $B^+\!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,\pi^+$ are precisely measured relative to the favoured decay $B^+\!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,K^+$, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ recorded at center-of-mass energy of $13~\mathrm{TeV}$ during 2016--2018. The results of the $C\!P$ asymmetry difference and branching fraction ratio are \begin{align*} \Delta\mathcal{A}^{C\!P} &\equiv \mathcal{A}^{C\!P}(B^+ \to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,\pi^+) - \mathcal{A}^{C\!P}(B^+ \to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,K^+) = (1.29 \pm 0.49 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-2}, \end{align*} \begin{equation*} \mathcal{R}_{\pi/K} \equiv \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^+ \!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,\pi^+)}{\mathcal{B}(B^+ \!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,K^+)} = (3.852 \pm 0.022 \pm 0.018) \times 10^{-2}. \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. 31. Miscentering of Optical Galaxy Clusters Based on Sunyaev-Zeldovich Counterparts

Abstract: The "miscentering effect," i.e., the offset between a galaxy cluster's optically-defined center and the center of its gravitational potential, is a significant systematic effect on brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) studies and cluster lensing analyses. We perform a cross-match between the optical cluster catalog from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Survey S19A Data Release and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich cluster catalog from Data Release 5 of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). We obtain a sample of 186 clusters in common in the redshift range $0.1 \leq z \leq 1.4$ over an area of 469 deg$^2$. By modeling the distribution of centering offsets in this fiducial sample, we find a miscentered fraction (corresponding to clusters offset by more than 330 kpc) of ~25%, a value consistent with previous miscentering studies. We examine the image of each miscentered cluster in our sample and identify one of several reasons to explain the miscentering. Some clusters show significant miscentering for astrophysical reasons, i.e., ongoing cluster mergers. Others are miscentered due to non-astrophysical, systematic effects in the HSC data or the cluster-finding algorithm. After removing all clusters with clear, non-astrophysical causes of miscentering from the sample, we find a considerably smaller miscentered fraction, ~10%. We show that the gravitational lensing signal within 1 Mpc of miscentered clusters is considerably smaller than that of well-centered clusters, and we suggest that the ACT SZ centers are a better estimate of the true cluster potential centroid., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures. Abstract: By acting the projector to the filled lattice eigenstates on a specific position, or applying local electron annihilation operator on the many-body ground state, one can construct a quantum state localized around a specific position in a solid. The overlap of two such local states at slightly different positions defines a quantum metric in real space, which manifests even in systems as simple as particles in a box. For continuous systems like electron gas, this metric weighted by the density gives the momentum variance of electrons, which is readily measurable by ARPES. The presence of disorder curves the real space manifold and gives rise to various differential geometrical quantities like Riemann tensor and Ricci scalar, indicating the possibility of engineering differential geometrical properties by disorder, as demonstrated by lattice models of 2D metals and topological insulators., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

33. On the Verification of Control Flow Attestation Evidence

Abstract: Remote run-time attestation methods, including Control Flow Attestation (CFA) and Data Flow Attestation (DFA), have been proposed to generate precise evidence of execution's control flow path (in CFA) and optionally execution data inputs (in DFA) on a remote and potentially compromised embedded device, hereby referred to as a Prover (Prv). Recent advances in run-time attestation architectures are also able to guarantee that a remote Verifier (Vrf) reliably receives this evidence from Prv, even when Prv's software state is fully compromised. This, in theory, enables secure "run-time auditing" in addition to best-effort attestation, i.e., it guarantees that Vrf can examine execution evidence to identify previously unknown compromises as soon as they are exploited, pinpoint their root cause(s), and remediate them. However, prior work has for the most part focused on securely implementing Prv's root of trust (responsible for generating authentic run-time evidence), leaving Vrf 's perspective in this security service unexplored. In this work, we argue that run-time attestation and auditing are only truly useful if Vrf can effectively analyze received evidence. From this premise, we characterize different types of evidence produced by existing run-time attestation/auditing architectures in terms of Vrf 's ability to detect and remediate (previously unknown) vulnerabilities. As a case study for practical uses of run-time evidence by Vrf, we propose SABRE: a Security Analysis and Binary Repair Engine. SABRE showcases how Vrf can systematically leverage run-time evidence to detect control flow attacks, pinpoint corrupted control data and specific instructions used to corrupt them, and leverage this evidence to automatically generate binary patches to buffer overflow and use-after-free vulnerabilities without source code knowledge.

Abstract: This paper deals with sliding mode control for multivariable polytopic uncertain systems. We provide systematic procedures to design variable structure controllers (VSCs) and unit-vector controllers (UVCs). Based on suitable representations for the closed-loop system, we derive sufficient conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to design the robust sliding mode controllers such that the origin of the closed-loop system is globally stable in finite time. Moreover, by noticing that the reaching time depends on the initial condition and the decay rate, we provide convex optimization problems to design robust controllers by considering the minimization of the reaching time associated with a given set of initial conditions. 35. Gradient-Based Stochastic Extremum-Seeking Control for Multivariable Systems with Distinct Input Delays

Abstract: This paper addresses the design and analysis of a multivariable gradient-based stochastic extremum-seeking control method for multi-input systems with arbitrary input delays. The approach accommodates systems with distinct time delays across input channels and achieves local exponential stability of the closed-loop system, guaranteeing convergence to a small neighborhood around the extremum point. By incorporating phase compensation for dither signals and a novel predictor-feedback mechanism with averaging-based estimates of the unknown gradient and Hessian, the proposed method overcomes traditional challenges associated with arbitrary, distinct input delays. Unlike previous work on deterministic multiparameter extremum-seeking with distinct input delays, this stability analysis is achieved without using backstepping transformations, simplifying the predictor design and enabling a more straightforward implementation. Specifically, the direct application of Artstein's reduction approach results in delay- and system-dimension-independent convergence rates, enhancing practical applicability. Abstract: An angular analysis of the $B_s^0 \rightarrow \phi e^+e^-$ decay is performed using the proton-proton collision dataset collected between 2011 and 2018 by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and $13\,{\rm TeV}$. The analysis is performed in the very low dielectron invariant mass-squared region between $0.0009$ and $0.2615\,{\rm GeV}^2\!/c^4$. The longitudinal polarisation fraction of the $\phi$ meson is measured to be less than $11.5\%$ at $90\%$ confidence level. The $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathcal{R}e C\!P}$ observable, which is related to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, is measured to be $0.116 \pm 0.155 \pm 0.006$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The transverse asymmetries, $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)}$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathcal{I}m C\!P}$ , which are sensitive to the virtual photon polarisation, are found to be $-0.045 \pm 0.235 \pm 0.014$ and $0.002 \pm 0.247 \pm 0.016$, respectively. 37. First Steps towards K-12 Computer Science Education in Portugal -- Experience Report

Abstract: Computer scientists Jeannette Wing and Simon Peyton Jones have catalyzed a pivotal discussion on the need to introduce computing in K-12 mandatory education. In Wing's own words, computing 'represents a universally applicable attitude and skill set everyone, not just computer scientists, would be eager to learn and use.'' The crux of this educational endeavor lies in its execution. This paper reports on the efforts of the ENSICO association to implement such aims in Portugal. Starting with pilot projects in a few schools in 2020, it is currently working with 4500 students, 35 schools and 100 school teachers. The main aim is to gain enough experience and knowledge to eventually define a comprehensive syllabus for teaching computing as a mandatory subject throughout the basic and secondary levels of the Portuguese educational system. A structured framework for integrating computational thinking into K-12 education is proposed, with a particular emphasis on mathematical modeling and the functional programming paradigm. This approach is chosen for its potential to promote analytical and problem-solving skills of computational thinking aligned with the core background on maths and science.

Abstract: The first measurement of $\phi(1020)$ meson production in fixed-target $p$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=68.5$ GeV is presented. The $\phi(1020)$ mesons are reconstructed in their $K^{+}K^{-}$ decay in a data sample consisting of proton collisions on neon nuclei at rest, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $21.7 \pm 1.4$ nb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at CERN. 39. Quantum-Inspired Stochastic Modeling and Regularity Analysis in Turbulent Flows

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel mathematical framework for examining the regularity and energy dissipation properties of solutions to the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. By integrating Sobolev-Besov hybrid spaces, fractional differential operators, and quantum-inspired modeling techniques, we provide a comprehensive analysis that captures the multiscale and chaotic dynamics inherent in turbulent flows. Central to this framework is a Schr\"odinger-type operator adapted for fluid dynamics, which encapsulates quantum-scale turbulence effects, thereby elucidating the mechanisms of energy redistribution across scales. Additionally, we develop anisotropic stochastic models with direction-dependent viscosity, characterized by a pseudo-differential operator and a covariance matrix governing directional diffusion. These models more accurately reflect real-world turbulence, where viscosity varies with flow orientation, enhancing both theoretical insights and practical simulation capabilities. Our main contributions include new regularity theorems and rigorous a priori estimates for solutions in Sobolev-Besov spaces, alongside proofs of energy dissipation properties in anisotropic contexts. Abstract: The use of 3D modelling in medical education is a revolutionary tool during the learning process. In fact, this type of technology enables a more interactive teaching approach, making information retention more effective and enhancing students' understanding. 3D modelling allows for the creation of precise representations of the human body, as well as interaction with three-dimensional models, giving students a better spatial understanding of the different organs and systems and enabling simulations of surgical and technical procedures. This way, medical education is enriched with a more realistic and safe educational experience. The goal is to understand whether, when students and schools are challenged, they play an important role in addressing health issues in their community. School-led projects are directed towards educational scenarios that emphasize STEM education, tackling relevant public health problems through open-school initiatives. By implementing an educational scenario focused on 3D modelling and leveraging technology, we aim to raise community awareness on public health issues.

41. Maximum limit of connectivity in rectangular superconducting films with an oblique weak link

Abstract: A method for measuring the electrical connectivity between parts of a rectangular superconductor was developed for weak links making an arbitrary angle with the long side of the sample. The method is based on magneto-optical observation of characteristic lines where the critical current makes discontinuous deviations in the flow direction to adapt to the non-uniform condition created by the presence of the weak link. Assuming the Bean critical state model in the full penetration regime for a sample submitted to a perpendicular magnetic field, the complete flow pattern of screening currents is reconstructed, from which the transparency of the weak link, i.e., the ratio between its critical current and that of the pristine sample, $\tau = \frac{J_i}{J_c}$, is then related to the angle $\theta$ formed by two characteristic discontinuity lines which, in turn, are intimately associated to the presence of the weak link. The streamline distribution is compared with magneto-optical observations of the flux penetration in Nb superconducting films, where a weak link was created using focused ion beam milling. The present work generalizes previous analyses in which the weak link was perpendicular to the long sides of the rectangular sample. Equations and measurements demonstrate that the relationship between the transparency and the angle $\theta$ is not affected by the tilting of the weak link. Noticeably, in order to attain optimum connectivity, the weak link critical current can be less than that of the pristine sample, namely, $\tau _{max}=\sin \Phi$, where $\Phi$ is the tilt angle of the weak link. This expression generalizes the previous result of $\tau _{max}=1$ for $\Phi=$ 90$^\circ$.

Abstract: It is a central problem in the study of critical circle dynamics to understand the regularity of Yoccoz conjugators: the circle homeomorphisms that conjugate critical circle maps of irrational rotation numbers with their corresponding rigid rotations. One can shift the perspective on this problem and look at the regularity of extensions of such maps to the unit disk. Of particular interest to us, one can ask when this conjugator has David extensions. 43. Higher-Order Spectral Element Methods for Electromagnetic Modeling of Complex Anisotropic Waveguides

Abstract: This research thesis presents a novel higher-order spectral element method (SEM) formulated in cylindrical coordinates for analyzing electromagnetic fields in waveguides filled with complex anisotropic media. In this study, we consider a large class of cylindrical waveguides: radially-bounded and radially-unbounded domains; homogeneous and inhomogeneous waveguides; concentric and non-concentric geometries; Hermitian and non-Hermitian anisotropic media tensors. This work explores different wave equation formulations for one-layer eccentric and multilayer cylindrical waveguides. For the first case, we can define a new normalized scalar Helmholtz equation for decoupling TM and TE modes, and for the second, a vectorial Helmholtz equation for hybrid modes in multilayered anisotropic structures. Additionally, we formulate a transformation optics (TO) framework to include non-symmetric and non-Hermitian media tensors for non-concentric multilayer waveguides. Lastly, we model excitation sources for logging sensors applied in geophysical problems using the fields obtained by SEM. We validate the proposed approach against analytical solutions, perturbation-based and mode-matching-based methods, finite-elements, and finite-integration numerical methods. Our technique obtains accurate results with fewer elements and degrees of freedom (DoF) than Cartesian-based SEM and ordinary finite-element approaches. To this end, we use higher-order two-dimensional basis functions associated with the zeros of the completed Lobatto polynomial to model the fields in each reference element. The convergence analysis demonstrates the absence of the Runge effect as the expansion order increases. 44. Entropy production along a deterministic motion

Abstract: We propose a stochastic dynamics to be associated to a deterministic motion defined by a set of first order differential equation. The transitions that defined the stochastic dynamics are unidirectional and the rates are equal to the absolute value of the velocity vector field associate to the deterministic motion. From the stochastic dynamics we determine the entropy production and the entropy flux. This last quantity is found to be the negative of the divergence of the velocity vector field. In the case of a Hamiltonian dynamics it vanishes identically.

45. Unlocking Legal Knowledge with Multi-Layered Embedding-Based Retrieval

Abstract: This work addresses the challenge of capturing the complexities of legal knowledge by proposing a multi-layered embedding-based retrieval method for legal and legislative texts. Creating embeddings not only for individual articles but also for their components (paragraphs, clauses) and structural groupings (books, titles, chapters, etc), we seek to capture the subtleties of legal information through the use of dense vectors of embeddings, representing it at varying levels of granularity. Our method meets various information needs by allowing the Retrieval Augmented Generation system to provide accurate responses, whether for specific segments or entire sections, tailored to the user's query. We explore the concepts of aboutness, semantic chunking, and inherent hierarchy within legal texts, arguing that this method enhances the legal information retrieval. Despite the focus being on Brazil's legislative methods and the Brazilian Constitution, which follow a civil law tradition, our findings should in principle be applicable across different legal systems, including those adhering to common law traditions. Abstract: Quantum mechanics started out as a theory to describe the smallest scales of energy in Nature. After hundred years of development it is now routinely employed to describe, for example, quantum computers with thousands of qubits. This tremendous progress turns the debate of foundational questions into a technological imperative. In what follows we introduce a model of a quantum measurement process that consistently includes the impact of having access only to finite resources when describing a macroscopic system, like a measurement apparatus. Leveraging modern tools from equilibration of closed systems and typicality, we show how the collapse can be seen as an effective description of a closed dynamics, of which we do not know all its details. Our model is then exploited to address the ``Wigner Friend Scenario'', and we observe that an agreement is reached when both Wigner and his friend acknowledge their finite resources perspective and describe the measurement process accordingly., Comment: 7+2 pages, 2 figures. 47. Dissipation and Regularity in the Smagorinsky Model with Dynamic Boundaries

Abstract: This article presents an innovative extension of the Smagorinsky model incorporating dynamic boundary conditions and advanced regularity methods. We formulate the modified Navier-Stokes equations with the Smagorinsky term to model dissipation in turbulence and prove theorems concerning the existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of solutions. The first theorem establishes the existence and uniqueness of solutions in higher Sobolev spaces, considering the effect of the nonlinear Smagorinsky term and dynamic boundary conditions. The proof employs the Galerkin method and energy estimates, culminating in the application of Gr\"onwall's theorem. The second theorem investigates the asymptotic behavior of solutions, focusing on anomalous dissipation in high-turbulence regimes. We demonstrate that the dissipated energy does not decrease with vanishing viscosity, indicating the occurrence of anomalous dissipation. The third theorem explores advanced regularity in higher Sobolev spaces, allowing for more rigorous control of nonlinear terms and ensuring improved stability conditions. The proof utilizes the energy method combined with Sobolev estimates and Gr\"onwall's inequality. Abstract: The dissociation of quarkonium states with different binding energies produced in heavy-ion collisions is a powerful probe for investigating the formation and properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The ratio of production cross-sections of $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi$ mesons times the ratio of their branching fractions into the dimuon final state is measured as a function of centrality using data collected by the LHCb detector in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. 49. Adaptive Dissipation in the Smagorinsky Model for Turbulence in Boundary-Driven Flows

Abstract: This paper enhances the classic Smagorinsky model by introducing an innovative, adaptive dissipation term that adjusts dynamically with distance from boundary regions. This modification addresses a known limitation of the standard model over dissipation near boundaries thereby improving accuracy in turbulent flow simulations in confined or wall-adjacent areas. We present a rigorous theoretical framework for this adaptive model, including two foundational theorems. The first theorem guarantees existence and uniqueness of solutions, ensuring that the model is mathematically well-posed within the adaptive context. The second theorem provides a precise bound on the energy dissipation rate, demonstrating that dissipation remains controlled and realistic even as boundary effects vary spatially. By allowing the dissipation coefficient to decrease near boundary layers, this approach preserves the finer turbulent structures without excessive smoothing, yielding a more physically accurate representation of the flow. Future work will focus on implementing this adaptive model in computational simulations to empirically verify the theoretical predictions and assess performance in scenarios with complex boundary geometries., Comment: 9 pages

50. Efficient Spintronic THz Emitters Without External Magnetic Field

Abstract: We investigate the performance of state-of-the-art spintronic THz emitters (W or Ta)/CoFeB/Pt with non-magnetic underlayer deposited using oblique angle deposition. The THz emission amplitude in the presence or absence of an external magnetic field remains the same and remarkably stable over time. This stability is attributed to the enhanced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the ferromagnetic layer, achieved by oblique angle deposition of the underlying non-magnetic layer. Our findings could be used for the development of practical field-free emitters of linearly polarized THz radiation, potentially enabling novel applications in future THz technologies., Comment: 6 pages including references and 5 figures
