1. Symbiotic stars in X-rays IV: XMM-Newton, Swift and TESS observations

Abstract

White dwarf symbiotic binaries are detected in X-rays with luminosities in the range of 10$^{30}$ to 10$^{34}$ lumcgs. Their X-ray emission arises either from the accretion disk boundary layer, from a region where the winds from both components collide or from nuclear burning on the white dwarf surface. In our continuous effort to identify X-ray emitting symbiotic stars, we studied four systems using observations from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and XMM-Newton satellites in X-rays and from TESS in the optical. The X-ray spectra were fit with absorbed optically thin thermal plasma models, either single- or multitemperature with kT $<$ 8 keV for all targets. Based on the characteristics of their X-ray spectra, we classified BD Cam as possible $\beta$-type, V1261 Ori and CD -27 8661 as $\delta$-type, and confirmed NQ Gem as $\beta$/$\delta$-type. The $\delta$-type X-ray emission most likely arise in the boundary layer of the accretion disk, while in the case of BD Cam, its mostly-soft emission originates from shocks, possibly between the red giant and WD/disk winds. In general, we have found that the observed X-ray emission is powered by accretion at a low accretion rate of about 10$^{-11}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The low ratio of X-ray to optical luminosities, however indicates that the accretion-disk boundary layer is mostly optically thick and tends to emit in the far or extreme UV. 6. The contact binary system TYC 7275-1968-1 as seen by optical, UV and X-ray observations

Abstract

We present an analysis of publicly available X-ray and optical observations of TYC 7275-1968-1, a contact binary, red nova progenitor candidate. The long optical time series of ASAS-SN, SuperWASP, CRTS, GAIA, ASAS-3, and TESS enabled us to improve its orbital period to 0.3828071 $\pm$ 0.0000026 d. We show the presence of an X-ray and UV source associated with TYC 7275-1968-1 from Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, that was previously assumed to be the counterpart of CD -36 8436 (V1044 Cen), a symbiotic star located 22 arcsec from the red nova candidate. The X-ray data indicate the presence of a region with a temperature of $kT$ = 0.8$^{+0.9}_{-0.1}$ keV and a luminosity of 1.4$^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$ $\times$ 10$^{31}$ erg s $^{-1}$ in the range 0.3 - 10 keV. The detection of X-rays and modulated UV emission suggests that both components of the binary are chromospherically active., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in the New Astronomy

Abstract

Numerous studies have shown reduced performance in plants that are surrounded by neighbours of the same species1,2, a phenomenon known as conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD)3. A long-held ecological hypothesis posits that CNDD is more pronounced in tropical than in temperate forests4,5, which increases community stabilization, species coexistence and the diversity of local tree species6,7. Previous analyses supporting such a latitudinal gradient in CNDD8,9 have suffered from methodological limitations related to the use of static data10-12. Here we present a comprehensive assessment of latitudinal CNDD patterns using dynamic mortality data to estimate species-site-specific CNDD across 23 sites. Averaged across species, we found that stabilizing CNDD was present at all except one site, but that average stabilizing CNDD was not stronger toward the tropics. However, in tropical tree communities, rare and intermediate abundant species experienced stronger stabilizing CNDD than did common species. This pattern was absent in temperate forests, which suggests that CNDD influences species abundances more strongly in tropical forests than it does in temperate ones13. We also found that interspecific variation in CNDD, which might attenuate its stabilizing effect on species diversity14,15, was high but not significantly different across latitudes. Although the consequences of these patterns for latitudinal diversity gradients are difficult to evaluate, we speculate that a more effective regulation of population abundances could translate into greater stabilization of tropical tree communities and thus contribute to the high local diversity of tropical forests.

Abstract

We study monoidal profunctors as a tool to reason and structure pure functional programs both from a categorical perspective and as a Haskell implementation. From the categorical point of view we approach them as monoids in a certain monoidal category of profunctors. We study properties of this monoidal category and construct and implement the free monoidal profunctor. Abstract

Countless traffic accidents often occur because of the inattention of the drivers. Many factors can contribute to distractions while driving, since objects or events to physiological conditions, as drowsiness and fatigue, do not allow the driver to stay attentive. The technological progress allowed the development and application of many solutions to detect the attention in real situations, promoting the interest of the scientific community in these last years. Commonly, these solutions identify the lack of attention and alert the driver, in order to help her/him to recover the attention, avoiding serious accidents and preserving lives. Our work presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of the methods and criteria used to detect attention of drivers at the wheel, focusing on those methods based on images. As results, 50 studies were selected from the literature on drivers' attention detection, in which 22 contain solutions in the desired context. Abstract

We present an analysis of mock X-ray spectra and light curves of magnetic cataclysmic variables using an upgraded version of the 3D CYCLOPS code. This 3D representation of the accretion flow allows us to properly model total and partial occultation of the post-shock region by the white dwarf as well as the modulation of the X-ray light curves due to the phase-dependent extinction of the pre-shock region. We carried out detailed post-shock region modeling in a four-dimensional parameter space by varying the white dwarf mass and magnetic field strength as well as the magnetosphere radius and the specific accretion rate. To calculate the post-shock region temperature and density profiles, we assumed equipartition between ions and electrons, took into account the white dwarf gravitational potential, the finite size of the magnetosphere and a dipole-like magnetic field geometry, and considered cooling by both bremsstrahlung and cyclotron radiative processes. By investigating the impact of the parameters on the resulting X-ray continuum spectra, we show that there is an inevitable degeneracy in the four-dimensional parameter space investigated here, which compromises X-ray continuum spectral fitting strategies and can lead to incorrect parameter estimates. However, the inclusion of X-ray light curves in different energy ranges can break this degeneracy, and it therefore remains, in principle, possible to use X-ray data to derive fundamental parameters of magnetic cataclysmic variables, which represents an essential step toward understanding their formation and evolution., Comment: 42 pages, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

Abstract

This paper provides information about a multilingual (Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, and French) virtual card game for computers and smartphones. Facing the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this game allows students to play remotely or face-to-face with friends in a fun and cooperative environment and review the topics related to the structural theory of organic compounds simultaneously. Brazilian and Italian undergraduate students played and evaluated the game positively. Also, learning assessments revealed that the game promotes learning equivalent to the traditional solving-problem classes. Therefore, the game is a playful alternative method to the conventional educational strategies for reviewing the content related to the structural theory of organic compounds in a fun way in a collaborative environment in which the students discuss the answer to each question.

Abstract

Objetivo: Mapear a evidência científica disponível sobre o conhecimento dos estudantes do ensino secundário em reanimação cardiopulmonar. Metodologia: Protocolo de revisão de escopo, que seguiu a metodologia do Joanna Briggs Institute e as recomendações do PRISMA-ScR. Foram incluídos estudos com abordagem quantitativa, qualitativa ou mistos. A pesquisa realizou-se nas bases de dados: CINAHL; Medline Complete; Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive; MedicLatina (via EBSCO) em dezembro de 2023. Foram utilizados os descritores conhecimento, estudantes, ensino secundário, reanimação cardiopulmonar em português, inglês e espanhol e sem limite temporal. A triagem dos estudos foi realizada através da leitura do título e resumo, posteriormente foi realizada a leitura na íntegra por dois revisores independentes que farão a extração e síntese dos dados. Recorrer-se-á a um terceiro revisor em caso de discordância. Desenvolveu-se uma tabela de evidências construída pelos investigadores para o efeito. Pesquisa registada na plataforma Open Science Framework (DOI10.17605/OSF.IO/V9X5N). ABSTRACT Objective: To map the available scientific evidence on secondary school students’ knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Methodology: Scope review protocol, according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR® recommendations. Studies with a quantitative, qualitative or mixed approach are included. The research was carried out in the following databases: CINAHL ®; Medline Complete ®; Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive ®; MedicLatina ® (via EBSCO) in December 2023. The descriptors were used Knowledge, students, secondary education, cardiopulmonary resuscitation were used in Portuguese, English and Spanish and without time limit. The screening of studies was carried out by reading the title and summary, then the full reading was carried out by two independent reviewers who will extract and synthesize the data. A third reviewer will be used in case of disagreement. An evidence table constructed by the researchers was developed for this purpose. Abstract

We report on XMM-Newton X-ray observations that reveal CTCV J2056-3014 to be an unusual accretion-powered, intermediate polar (IP) system. It is a member of the class of X-ray-faint IPs whose space density remains unconstrained but potentially very high, with L$_{x,0.3-12 keV}$ of 1.8$\times$10$^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We discovered a coherent 29.6s pulsation in X-rays that was also revealed in our reanalysis of published optical data, showing that the system harbors the fastest-spinning, securely known white dwarf (WD) so far. There is no substantial X-ray absorption in the system. Accretion occurs at a modest rate ($\sim$ 6$\times$10$^{-12}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) in a tall shock above the WD, while the star seems to be spinning in equilibrium and to have low magnetic fields. Further studies of CTCV J2056-3014 potentially have broad implications on the origin of magnetic fields in WDs, on the population and evolution of magnetic cataclysmic variables, and also on the physics of matter around rapidly rotating magnetic WDs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

This is the second paper of a series presenting our search for magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (mCVs) among candidates selected mostly from the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey (CRTS). We present the identification spectra, obtained at the SOAR Telescope, as well as magnitudes and Gaia distances for 45 objects. Of these, 39 objects are identified as CVs, from which 8 targets show observational characteristics of mCVs, being 7 polars and 1 intermediate polar. The remaining 31 CVs in our sample are probably non-magnetic systems, in low (22 systems) or high (9 systems) accretion states. Six targets of the sample are not CVs (5 AGNs and 1 T Tauri star). Among the 8 objects with mCV spectra, 6 are new classifications. Three polars were observed in low accretion state, either revealing photospheric features of the secondary star and allowing the estimation of their spectral type, or presenting H$\beta$ Zeeman components associated to the WD magnetic field. In addition to the results obtained in the first paper of the series, and depending on the confirmation of these classifications by observational follow-up, our results would increase the sample of known polars by about 9 percent., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Abstract

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (EcM) associations are critical for host-tree performance. However, how mycorrhizal associations correlate with the latitudinal tree beta-diversity remains untested. Using a global dataset of 45 forest plots representing 2,804,270 trees across 3840 species, we test how AM and EcM trees contribute to total beta-diversity and its components (turnover and nestedness) of all trees. We find AM rather than EcM trees predominantly contribute to decreasing total beta-diversity and turnover and increasing nestedness with increasing latitude, probably because wide distributions of EcM trees do not generate strong compositional differences among localities. Environmental variables, especially temperature and precipitation, are strongly correlated with beta-diversity patterns for both AM trees and all trees rather than EcM trees. Results support our hypotheses that latitudinal beta-diversity patterns and environmental effects on these patterns are highly dependent on mycorrhizal types. Our findings highlight the importance of AM-dominated forests for conserving global forest biodiversity.
