In this work, we establish two global attractivity criteria for a multidimensional discrete-time non-autonomous Hopfield neural network model with infinite delays and delays in the leakage terms. The first criterion, which applies when the activation functions are bounded, is based on M-matrices that are not necessarily invertible. The second criterion, relevant for unbounded activation functions, requires that a related singular M-matrix be irreducible. We contrast our findings with existing results in the literature and present numerical simulations to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed criteria.

We analyze the resonance energy transfer (RET) rate between quantum emitters (QEs) near a phosphorene/SiC interface under the effects of uniaxial strain. Using a low-energy tight-binding model, we describe the electronic structure of strained phosphorene in an experimentally feasible situation. Due to the anisotropic electronic structure of phosphorene, we demonstrate that the RET rate drastically depends on the direction in which the QEs are separated relative to the phosphorene lattice. More specifically, we obtain a large variation in the RET rate when the QEs are separated along the zigzag direction, in contrast to a rather small variation when separated along the armchair direction of phosphorene's crystalline structure. Furthermore, our results reveal that the RET rate can be highly modulated by uniaxial strain in phosphorene when considering emitters placed along the zigzag direction. Finally, by means of a simple toy model, we also show that this anisotropy in the RET rate is a general characteristic produced by anisotropic 2D materials.

We derive the main equations of irreversible thermodynamic including the expression for the Glansdorff-Prigogine extremal principle from stochastic thermodynamics. To this end, we analyze a system that is subject to gradients of temperature and external forces that induce the appearance of fluxes of several sorts and the creation of entropy. We show that the rate of entropy production is a convex function of the fluxes, from which follows that the excess entropy production is nonnegative, which is an expression of the Glansdorff-Prigogine principle. We show that the Lyapunov function associated with the excess entropy production can be identified with a thermodynamic potential in the special case where the gradients of temperature are absent.

The impact of several $``\text{flavours}"$ of free-stream turbulence (FST) on the structural response of a cantilevered cylinder, subjected to a turbulent cross-flow is investigated. At high enough Reynolds numbers, the cylinder generates a spectrally rich turbulent wake which significantly contributing to the experienced loads. The presence of FST introduces additional complexity through two primary mechanisms: $\textbf{directly}$, by imposing a fluctuating velocity field on the cylinder's surface, and $\textbf{indirectly}$, by altering the vortex shedding dynamics, modifying the experienced loads. We employ concurrent temporally resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and distributed strain measurements using Rayleigh backscattering fibre optic sensors (RBS) to instrument the surrounding velocity field and the structural strain respectively. By using various turbulence-generating grids, and manipulating their distance to the cylinder, we assess a broad FST parameter space allowing us to individually explore the influence of transverse integral length scale ($\mathcal{L}_{13}/D$), and turbulence intensity ($TI$) of the FST on the developing load dynamics. The presence of FST enhances the magnitude of the loads acting on the cylinder. This results from a decreased vortex formation length, increased coherence of regular vortex shedding, and energy associated with this flow structure in the near-wake. The cylinder's structural response is mainly driven by the vortex shedding dynamics, and their modification induced by the presence of FST, ie. the indirect effect outweighs the direct effect. From the explored FST parameter space, $TI$ was seen to be the main driver of enhanced loading conditions, presenting a positive correlation with the fluctuating loads magnitude at the root.

We propose a stochastic dynamics to be associated to a deterministic motion defined by a set of first order differential equation. The transitions that defined the stochastic dynamics are unidirectional and the rates are equal to the absolute value of the velocity vector field associate to the deterministic motion. From the stochastic dynamics we determine the entropy production and the entropy flux. This last quantity is found to be the negative of the divergence of the velocity vector field. In the case of a Hamiltonian dynamics it vanishes identically.

In this paper, we investigate the convergence of asymptotic systems in non-autonomous Cohen--Grossberg neural network models, which include both infinite discrete time-varying and distributed delays. We derive stability results under conditions where the non-delay terms asymptotically dominate the delay terms. We study the thermodynamic behavior of hard rigid rods of size $k$ (i.e., $k$-mers) on four- and six-coordinated Husimi lattices (HLs), respectively built with squares (square HL) and triangles (triangular HL). In both lattices, dimers ($k=2$) and trimers ($k=3$) only present a isotropic phase, whereas a isotropic-nematic transition is observed for $k \ge 4$. In the square HL, this transition is continuous and occurs at a critical \textit{monomer} activity which displays a nonmonotonic variation with $k$, while the critical \textit{rod} activity and density are always decreasing functions of $k$. The isotropic-nematic transition is discontinuous in the triangular HL, but the $k$-dependence of the coexistence activities and density is analogous to that found for the square case. No transition from the nematic to a high-density disordered phase is found in these HLs. In general, this scenario is very similar to that already observed for rods on the Bethe lattice, though the critical parameters obtained here are in most cases closer to those reported in the literature for the square and triangular lattices. The entropy per site of fully-packed rods is also investigated in detail in the triangular HL, where its value for dimers differs by only 0.7\% from the exact result for the triangular lattice., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

We derive the expression for the entropy production for stochastic dynamics defined on a continuous space of states containing unidirectional transitions. The expression is derived by taking the continuous limit of a stochastic dynamics on a discrete space of states and is based on an expression for the entropy production appropriate for unidirectional transition. Our results shows that the entropy flux is the negative of the divergence of the vector firld whose components are the rates at which a dynamic variable changes in time. For a Hamiltonian dynamical system, it follows from this result that the entropy flux vanish identically.

We investigate the thermodynamics as well as the population dynamics of ecosystems based on a stochastic approach in which the number of individuals of the several species of the ecosystem are treated as stochastic variables. The several species are connected by feeding relationships that are understood as unidirectional processes in which a certain amount of biomass is exchanged between species. We show that the equations for the averages in the numbers of individuals are that given by the deterministic approach. We determine the fluxes of mass, energy, and entropy as well as the rate of the entropy production. This last quantity, which has a central role in the present stochastic approach, is obtained by a formula appropriate for unidirectional transitions. The flux of energy across the ecosystem is shown to be proportional to the flux of entropy to the environment.

We propose an expression for the production of entropy for system described by a stochastic dynamics which is appropriate for the case where the reverse transition rate vanishes but the forward transition is nonzero. The expression is positive defined and based on the inequality $x\ln x-(x-1)\ge0$. The corresponding entropy flux is linear in the probability distribution allowing its calculation as an average. The expression is applied to the one-dimensional contact process at the stationary state. We found that the rate of entropy production per site is finite with a singularity at the critical point with diverging slope.

Two-dimensional (2D) KPZ growth is usually investigated on substrates of lateral sizes $L_x=L_y$, so that $L_x$ and the correlation length ($\xi$) are the only relevant lengths determining the scaling behavior. However, in cylindrical geometry, as well as in flat rectangular substrates $L_x \neq L_y$ and, thus, the surfaces can become correlated in a single direction, when $\xi \sim L_x \ll L_y$. From extensive simulations of several KPZ models, we demonstrate that this yields a dimensional crossover in their dynamics, with the roughness scaling as $W \sim t^{\beta_{\text{2D}}}$ for $t \ll t_c$ and $W \sim t^{\beta_{\text{1D}}}$ for $t \gg t_c$, where $t_c \sim L_x^{1/z_{2\text{D}}}$. The height distributions (HDs) also cross over from the 2D flat [cylindrical] HD to the asymptotic Tracy-Widom GOE [GUE] distribution. Moreover, 2D-to-1D crossovers are found also in the asymptotic growth velocity and in the steady state regime of flat systems, where a family of universal HDs exists, interpolating between the 2D and 1D ones as $L_y/L_x$ increases. Importantly, the crossover scalings are fully determined and indicate a possible way to solve 2D KPZ models.

In the present paper, we investigate both the global exponential stability and the existence of a periodic solution of a general differential equation with unbounded distributed delays. The main stability criterion depends on the dominance of the non-delay terms over the delay terms. The criterion for the existence of a periodic solution is obtained with the application of the coincide degree theorem. We use the main results to get criteria for the existence and global exponential stability of periodic solutions of a generalized higher-order periodic Cohen-Grossberg neural network model with discrete-time varying delays and infinite distributed delays. Additionally, we provide a comparison with the results in the literature and a numerical simulation to illustrate the effectiveness of some of our results., Comment: 30 pages

We show that the dynamics of a quantum system can be represented by the dynamics of an underlying classical systems obeying the Hamilton equations of motion. This is achieved by transforming the phase space of dimension $2n$ into a Hilbert space of dimension $n$ which is obtained by a peculiar canonical transformation that changes a pair of real canonical variables into a pair of complex canonical variables which are complex conjugate of each other. The probabilistic character of quantum mechanics is devised by treating the wave function as a stochastic variable. The dynamics of the underlying system is chosen so as to preserve the norm of the state vector.

From classical stochastic equations of motion we derive the quantum Schr\"odinger equation. The derivation is carried out by assuming that the real and imaginary parts of the wave function $\phi$ are proportional to the coordinates and momenta associated to the degrees of freedom of an underlying classical system. The wave function $\phi$ is assumed to be a complex time dependent random variable that obeys a stochastic equation of motion that preserves the norm of $\phi$. The quantum Liouville equation is obtained by considering that the stochastic part of the equation of motion changes the phase of $\phi$ but not its absolute value. The Schr\"odinger equation follows from the Liouville equation. The wave function $\psi$ obeying the Schr\"odinger equation is related to the stochastic wave function by $|\psi|^2=\langle|\phi|^2\rangle$.

The majority vote model is one of the simplest opinion systems yielding distinct phase transitions and has garnered significant interest in recent years. However, its original formulation is not, in general, thermodynamically consistent, precluding the achievement of quantities such as power and heat, as well as their behaviors at phase transition regimes. Here, we circumvent this limitation by introducing the idea of a distinct heat bath per local configuration, in such a way that each neighborhood value is associated with a distinct and well-defined thermal bath. Thermodynamic properties are derived for a generic majority vote model, irrespective of its neighborhood and lattice topology. The behavior of energy/heat fluxes at phase transitions, whether continuous or discontinuous, in regular and complex topologies, is investigated in detail. Unraveling the contribution of each local configuration explains the nature of the phase diagram and reveals how dissipation arises from the dynamics.

In recent work [PRE 100, 022121 (2019)] evidence was found that the surface adsorption transition of interacting self-avoiding trails (ISATs) placed on the square lattice displays a non-universal behavior at the special adsorption point (SAP) where the collapsing polymers adsorb. In fact, different surface exponents $\phi^{(s)}$ and $1/\delta^{(s)}$ were found at the SAP depending on whether the surface orientation is horizontal (HS) or diagonal (DS). Here, we revisit these systems and study other ones, through extensive Monte Carlo simulations, considering much longer trails than previous works. Importantly, we demonstrate that the different exponents observed in the reference above are due to the presence of a previously unseen surface-attached-globule (SAG) phase in the DS system, which changes the multicritical nature of the SAP and is absent in the HS case. By considering a modified horizontal surface (mHS) where the trails are forbidden of having two consecutive steps along it, resembling the DS situation, a stable SAG phase is found in the phase diagram, and both DS and mHS systems present similar $1/\delta^{(s)}$ exponents at the SAP, being $1/\delta^{(s)} \approx 0.44$, whilst $1/\delta^{(s)} \approx 0.34$ in the HS case. Intriguingly, while $\phi^{(s)} \approx 1/\delta^{(s)}$ is found for the DS and HS scenarios, as expected, in the mHS case $\phi^{(s)}$ is about $10$\% smaller than $1/\delta^{(s)}$. These results strongly indicate that at least two universality classes exist for the SAPs of adsorbing ISATs on the square lattice., Comment: 11 pages and 14 figures

We show that the quantum Fokker-Planck equation, obtained by a canonical quantization of its classical version, can be transformed into an equation of the Lindblad form. This result allows us to conclude that the quantum Fokker-Planck equation preserves the trace and positivity of the density operator. The Fokker-Planck structure gives explicit expression for the quantum equivalence of probability current as well as the quantum equivalence of detailed balance. We also propose expression for the rate of entropy production and show that it does not vanish for a closed system except in equilibrium.

While the 1-point height distributions (HDs) and 2-point covariances of $(2+1)$ KPZ systems have been investigated in several recent works for flat and spherical geometries, for the cylindrical one the HD was analyzed for few models and nothing is known about the spatial and temporal covariances. Here, we report results for these quantities, obtained from extensive numerical simulations of discrete KPZ models, for three different setups yielding cylindrical growth. Beyond demonstrating the universality of the HD and covariances, our results reveal other interesting features of this geometry. For example, the spatial covariances measured along the longitudinal and azimuthal directions are different, with the former being quite similar to the curve for flat $(2+1)$ KPZ systems, while the latter resembles the Airy$_2$ covariance of circular $(1+1)$ KPZ interfaces. We also argue (and present numerical evidence) that, in general, the rescaled temporal covariance $\mathcal{A}(t/t_0)$ decays asymptotically as $\mathcal{A}(x) \sim x^{-\bar{\lambda}}$ with an exponent $\bar{\lambda} = \beta + d^*/z$, where $d^*$ is the number of interface sides kept fixed during the growth (being $d^* = 1$ for the systems analyzed here). We show that models of opinion formation and dissemination in a community of individuals can be framed within stochastic thermodynamics from which we can build a nonequilibrium thermodynamics of opinion dynamics. This is accomplished by decomposing the original transition rate that defines an opinion model into two or more transition rates, each representing the contact with heat reservoirs at different temperatures, and postulating an energy function. As the temperatures are distinct, heat fluxes are present even at the stationary state and linked to the production of entropy, the fundamental quantity that characterizes nonequilibrium states. We apply the present framework to a generic-vote model including the majority-vote model in a square lattice and in a cubic lattice. The fluxes and the rate of entropy production are calculated by numerical simulation and by the use of a pair approximation.

The determination of the exact exponents of the KPZ class in any substrate dimension $d$ is one of the most important open issues in Statistical Physics. Based on the behavior of the dimensional variation of some exact exponent differences for other growth equations, I find here that the KPZ growth exponents (related to the temporal scaling of the fluctuations) are given by $\beta_d = \frac{7}{8d+13}$. These exponents present an excellent agreement with the most accurate estimates for them in the literature. Moreover, they are confirmed here through extensive Monte Carlo simulations of discrete growth models and real space renormalization group (RG) calculations for directed polymers in random media (DPRM), up to $d=15$. The left-tail exponents of the probability density functions for the DPRM energy provide another striking verification of the analytical result above., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

In this paper, a new global exponential stability criterion is obtained for a general multidimensional delay difference equation using induction arguments. In the cases that the difference equation is periodic, we prove the existence of a periodic solution by constructing a type of Poincar\'e map. The results are used to obtain stability criteria for a general discrete-time neural network model with a delay in the leakage terms. As particular cases, we obtain new stability criteria for neural network models recently studied in the literature, in particular for low-order and high-order Hopfield and Bidirectional Associative Memory(BAM)., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

We study closed systems of particles that are subject to stochastic forces in addition to the conservative forces. The stochastic equations of motion are set up in such a way that the energy is strictly conserved at all times. To ensure this conservation law, the evolution equation for the probability density is derived using an appropriate interpretation of the stochastic equation of motion that is not the It\^o nor the Stratonovic interpretation. The trajectories in phase space are restricted to the surface of constant energy. Despite this restriction, the entropy is shown to increase with time, expressing irreversible behavior and relaxation to equilibrium. This main result of the present approach contrasts with that given by the Liouville equation, which also describes closed systems, but does not show irreversibility.

We study magnetic polymers, defined as self-avoiding walks where each monomer $i$ carries a "spin'' $s_i$ and interacts with its first neighbor monomers, let us say $j$, via a coupling constant $J(s_i,s_j)$. Ising-like [$s_i = \pm 1$, with $J(s_i,s_j) = \varepsilon s_i s_j$] and Potts-like [$s_i = 1,\ldots,q$, with $J(s_i,s_j)=\varepsilon_{s_i} \delta(s_i,s_j)$] models are investigated. Some particular cases of these systems have recently been studied in the continuum and on regular lattices, and are related to interesting applications. Here, we solve these models on Bethe lattices of ramification $\sigma$, focusing on the ferromagnetic case in zero external magnetic field. In most cases, the phase diagrams present a non-polymerized (NP) and two polymerized phases: a paramagnetic (PP) and a ferromagnetic (FP) one. However, quite different thermodynamic properties are found depending on $q$ in the Potts-like polymers and on whether one uses the Ising or Potts coupling in the two-state systems. Importantly, these results indicate that when $q\le 6$ the spin ordering transition is preceded by the polymer collapse transition, whereas for $q\ge 7$ and in the Ising case these transitions happen together at critical-end-points. Some interesting non-standard Potts models are also studied, such as the lattice version of the model for epigenetic marks in the chromatin introduced in [PRX {\bf 6}, 041047 (2016)]. In addition, the solution of the dilute Ising and dilute Potts models on the Bethe lattice are also presented here, once they are important to understand the PP-FP transitions., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

To quantitatively characterize height distributions (HDs), one uses adimensional ratios of their first central moments ($m_n$) or cumulants ($\kappa_n$), especially the skewness $S$ and kurtosis $K$, whose accurate estimate demands an averaging over all $L^d$ points of the height profile at a given time, in translation-invariant interfaces, and over $N$ independent samples. One way of doing this is by calculating $m_n(t)$ [or $\kappa_n(t)$] for each sample and then carrying out an average of them for the $N$ interfaces, with $S$ and $K$ being calculated only at the end. Another approach consists in directly calculating the ratios for each interface and, then, averaging the $N$ values. It turns out, however, that $S$ and $K$ for the growth regime HDs display strong finite-size and -time effects when estimated from these "interface statistics", as already observed in some previous works and clearly shown here, through extensive simulations of several discrete growth models belonging to the EW and KPZ classes on 1D and 2D substrates of sizes $L=const.$ and $L \sim t$. Importantly, I demonstrate that with "1-point statistics'', i.e., by calculating $m_n(t)$ [or $\kappa_n(t)$] once for all $N L^d$ heights together, these corrections become very weak. However, I find that this "1-point'' approach fails in uncovering the universality of the HDs in the steady state regime (SSR) of systems whose average height, $\bar{h}$, is a fluctuating variable. In fact, as demonstrated here, in this regime the 1-pt height evolves as $h(t) = \bar{h}(t) + s_{\lambda} A^{1/2} L^{\alpha} \zeta + \cdots$ -- where $P(\zeta)$ is the underlying SSR HD -- and the fluctuations in $\bar{h}$ yield $S_{1pt} \sim t^{-1/2}$ and $K_{1pt} \sim t^{-1}$. Nonetheless, by analyzing $P(h-\bar{h})$, the cumulants of $P(\zeta)$ can be accurately determined., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We study discrete KPZ growth models deposited on square lattice substrates, whose (average) lateral size enlarges as $L= L_0 + \omega t^{\gamma}$. Our numerical simulations reveal that the competition between the substrate expansion and the increase of the correlation length parallel to the substrate, $\xi \simeq c t^{1/z}$, gives rise to a number of interesting results. For instance, when $\gamma < 1/z$ the interface becomes fully correlated, but its squared roughness, $W_2$, keeps increasing as $W_2 \sim t^{2\alpha \gamma}$, as previously observed for 1D systems. A careful analysis of this scaling, accounting for an intrinsic width on it, allows us to estimate the roughness exponent of the 2D KPZ class as $\alpha = 0.387(1)$, which is very accurate and robust, once it was obtained averaging the exponents for different models and growth conditions (i.e., for various $\gamma$'s and $\omega$'s). In this correlated regime, the height distributions (HDs) and spatial covariances are consistent with those expected for the steady-state regime of the 2D KPZ class for flat geometry. For $\gamma \approx 1/z$, we find a family of distributions and covariances continuously interpolating between those for the steady-state and the growth regime of radial KPZ interfaces, as the ratio $\omega/c$ augments. When $\gamma>1/z$ the system stays forever in the growth regime and the HDs always converge to the same asymptotic distribution, which is the one for the radial case. The spatial covariances, on the other hand, are $(\gamma,\omega)$-dependent, showing a trend towards the covariance of a random deposition in enlarging substrates as the expansion rate increases. These results considerably generalize our understanding of the height fluctuations in 2D KPZ systems, revealing a scenario very similar to the one previously found in the 1D case., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We examine the development of the concept of parametric invariance in classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and thermodynamics, and particularly its relation to entropy. The parametric invariance was used by Ehrenfest as a principle related to the quantization rules of the old quantum mechanics. It was also considered by Rayleigh in the determination of pressure caused by vibration, and the general approach we follow here is based on his. Specific calculation of invariants in classical and quantum mechanics are determined. The Hertz invariant, which is a volume in phase space, is extended to the case of a variable number of particles. We show that the slow parametric change leads to the adiabatic process, allowing the definition of entropy as a parametric invariance.

By means of diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering (DS,IXS), we probe directly the charge-ordering (CO) dynamics in the Verwey system (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, where a peculiar quadruple perovskite structure with no oxygen disorder stabilizes a nearly full Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ static charge order at $T_{\rm CO}$=175 K concomitant to a commensurate structural modulation with propagation vector ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}=(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},0)$. At $T_{\rm CO}$, the IXS spectra unveil a softening of a 35.3 meV phonon at ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}$. Lattice dynamical calculations enable us to attribute this soft phonon to a A$_g$ mode whose polarization matches the Jahn-Teller-like distortion pattern of the structural modulation. This result demonstrates that the Jahn-Teller instability is the driving force of the CO Verwey transition in (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, thus elucidating a long-standing controversy regarding the mechanism of this transition observed in other mixed-valence systems like magnetite.

Although hard rigid rods ($k$-mers) defined on the square lattice have been widely studied in the literature, their entropy per site, $s(k)$, in the full-packing limit is only known exactly for dimers ($k=2$) and numerically for trimers ($k=3$). Here, we investigate this entropy for rods with $k \le 7$, by defining and solving them on Husimi lattices built with diagonal and regular square lattice clusters of effective lateral size $L$, where $L$ defines the level of approximation to the square lattice. Due to an $L$-parity effect, by increasing $L$ we obtain two systematic sequences of values for the entropies $s_L(k)$ for each type of cluster, whose extrapolations to $L \rightarrow \infty$ provide estimates of these entropies for the square lattice. For dimers, our estimates for $s(2)$ differ from the exact result by only $0.03\%$, while that for $s(3)$ differs from best available estimates by $3\%$. In this paper, we also obtain a new estimate for $s(4)$. For larger $k$, we find that the extrapolated results from the Husimi tree calculations do not lie between the lower and upper bounds established in the literature for $s(k)$. In fact, we observe that, to obtain reliable estimates for these entropies, we should deal with levels $L$ that increase with $k$. However, it is very challenging computationally to advance to solve the problem for large values of $L$ and for large rods. In addition, the exact calculations on the generalized Husimi trees provide strong evidence for the fully packed phase to be disordered for $k\geq 4$, in contrast to the results for the Bethe lattice wherein it is nematic, thus providing evidence for a high density nematic-disordered transition in the system of $k$-mers with vacancies., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures

We analyze the susceptible-infected-susceptible model for epidemic spreading in which a fraction of the individuals become immune by vaccination. This process is understood as a dilution by vaccination, which decreases the fraction of the susceptible individuals. For a nonzero fraction of vaccinated individuals, the model predicts a new state in which the disease spreads but eventually becomes extinct. The new state emerges when the fraction of vaccinated individuals is greater than a critical value. The model predicts that this critical value increases as one increases the infection rate reaching an asymptotic value, which is strictly less than the unity. Above this asymptotic value, the extinction occurs no matter how large the infection rate is.
