Abstract

Most countries of Mediterranean Europe are strongly affected by forest fires, with major socio-economic and environmental impacts that can spread over several regions and countries. A transnational approach allows creating synergies regarding resource sharing and problem-solving strategies. The access to high quality and up-to-date information is critical to improve fire hazard mitigation measures and promote comparable appraisals between different regions. Several collaborative initiatives have been implemented in Europe to foster research and service development, focusing on common issues amongst countries. The PREFER project was one of these initiatives, with the purpose of contributing to protect human communities and forests from fire hazard, by providing cartographic products through the implementation of a new systematic framework. The participation of end users, such as civil protection organizations and forest services, covering the Euro-Mediterranean region, was crucial to ensure the operational application of the mapping products. Fuel classification, daily fire hazard indices, vulnerability assessment and damage severity levels were some of the mapping applications developed for several test areas in Mediterranean Europe. This chapter illustrates the potential enhancements for forest fire management offered by this framework, bearing in mind the benefits of applying shared and harmonized approaches for common issues.

Abstract

Ventilation in the prone position (PP) has been used for decades in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and is associated with a reduction in mortality rate. Its application has been extended to patients with SARS-Cov-2 pneumonia and is recommended by the main international organizations. The objective is to evaluate the effects of PP on the outcomes of patients with SARS-Cov-2 pneumonia admitted to a multipurpose intensive care unit. This is a quantitative, quasi-experimental, single-group, longitudinal and retrospective study. Data were collected based on clinical records. Data were processed using SPSS (version 26.0). PP significantly increased oxygenation in patients with SARS-Cov-2 pneumonia, with a mean increase of 21.27% between the PaO2/FiO2 ratio before and after the PP. However, its effectiveness was inversely proportional to the number of cycles performed and the timing of orotracheal intubation. PP improves oxygenation in patients with SARS-Cov-2 pneumonia. However, multiple PP sessions are not beneficial, as this procedure is no longer effective after the fourth cycle. This study thus contributes to better management in the approach of critically ill patients with SARS-Cov-2 pneumonia.

Abstract

Background: BG is a novel bioactive peptide derived from bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), known for its anti‐inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. In the present study, our objective is to investigate the functional roles and mechanisms of BG in the context of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: A rat model of adjuvant‐induced arthritis (AIA) was established by administering complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). The viability of BG‐mediated AIA was evaluated by assessing changes in rat body weight, joint swelling, ankle joint pathology, inflammation, necroptosis, the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), and gut microbiota. Results: The results of the study showed that peptide BG was effective in improving weight loss, joint swelling, serum IgM‐rheumatoid factor (IgM‐RF) level, and pathological injury of ankle joint in rats with AIA. BG administration resulted in a decrease in erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum C‐reactive protein (CRP), and inflammatory factor (interferon‐γ (IFN‐γ), interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), and tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α)) in AIA rats. Additionally, the administration of CFA resulted in an increase in the protein levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), neutrophil elastase (NE), citrullinated histone H3 (CitH3), peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4), p‐mixed lineage kinase domain‐like (p‐MLKL), and cleaved caspase 8. However, this increase was found to be inhibited by BG treatment. Furthermore, it has been found that peptide BG possesses the capacity to regulate the species composition structure of the intestinal microbiota, thereby, facilitating the reestablishment of microbial diversity and equilibrium. Conclusion: Peptide BG has demonstrated efficacy in ameliorating AIA through its regulation of the necroptosis/NETs/inflammation axis and the gut microbiota.
