This systematic review assessed the comparative effectiveness of surgical drainage techniques and postoperative interventions in reducing complications across various surgical fields. We conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and CINAHL, covering studies from January 2019 to September 2024. Ten randomized controlled trials met our inclusion criteria, focusing on human surgical patients and comparing outcomes such as seroma, hematoma, infection rates, and postoperative pain. Techniques such as pigtail catheters and vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) demonstrated statistically significant improvements in thoracic and orthopedic surgeries, reducing postoperative pain (effect size: 0.35, p < 0.05), pleural effusion (risk ratio: 0.68, p < 0.01), and hospital stays (mean difference: -2.5 days, p < 0.01), while also accelerating wound healing. However, inconsistent results were observed for hemostatic agents like topical gelatin-thrombin matrix sealant and polysaccharide agents, which did not consistently reduce complications in spinal and breast surgeries (effect size range: 0.10-0.20, p > 0.05). These findings suggest that drainage techniques should be tailored to specific surgical procedures and that the routine use of hemostatic agents requires more critical evaluation. Based on these insights, the review recommends prioritizing the use of pigtail catheters and VSD in appropriate contexts while further investigating the effectiveness of hemostatic agents in different surgical fields. This review underscores the need for additional long-term studies and personalized approaches to optimize drainage management in diverse patient populations. This systematic review evaluates the long-term efficacy and safety of adhesion prevention agents in abdominal and pelvic surgeries, synthesizing data from randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses. Adhesions, common postoperative complications, can lead to significant morbidity, including chronic pain, infertility, and bowel obstruction. Various agents, including hyaluronic acid-carboxymethylcellulose films and icodextrin solutions, have been developed to mitigate these risks. Our review highlights that agents like bioresorbable membranes (Seprafilm) and icodextrin significantly reduce the incidence and severity of adhesions, particularly in high-risk surgeries. However, certain complications such as anastomotic leaks and infections are associated with some agents, emphasizing the need for careful consideration in clinical decision-making. Additionally, while these agents reduce postoperative morbidity and enhance recovery, further research is needed to assess their long-term impact, particularly regarding fertility outcomes and chronic pain. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of surgical interventions in improving the quality of life for patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). A thorough literature search, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, identified 11 studies that focused on patient-reported outcomes after surgical treatments, including pancreatic resections, drainage procedures, and duodenum-preserving head resections. The findings indicate that organ-preserving procedures, notably the Frey and Beger operations, significantly enhance pain control and overall quality of life while reducing analgesic dependency. Stroke, a major cause of disability worldwide, necessitates comprehensive rehabilitation, with nutrition playing a pivotal role in recovery. Our systematic review assesses the impact of nutritional interventions on stroke survivors' rehabilitation. Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, using keywords related to stroke rehabilitation and nutrition. Studies were selected based on criteria emphasizing dietary interventions and their effect on functional recovery in stroke patients. The review involved detailed data extraction and synthesis, covering study design, participant characteristics, interventions, and outcomes. Five studies met our inclusion criteria, encompassing longitudinal and prospective studies, retrospective cohorts, and randomized controlled trials. These studies highlighted the importance of early nutritional assessment, particularly for sarcopenic patients, and the role of energy and protein intake soon after a stroke. Findings indicated high nutritional risk correlated with poorer functional outcomes and increased inflammation. Tailored dietary support appeared beneficial for muscle mass maintenance and overall functional recovery, especially in older patients. Our review emphasizes the critical role of nutritional interventions in stroke rehabilitation. It suggests that personalized nutritional strategies can positively impact functional recovery, notably in older and nutritionally vulnerable stroke survivors. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by diverse manifestations, notably in dermatological and neurological domains. This review aims to synthesize the current understanding of these manifestations and their impact on long-term prognosis. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases, focusing on studies exploring SLE's dermatological and neurological aspects. Selected studies were analyzed to understand their epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and impact on prognosis. Six pivotal studies were reviewed, highlighting the severity of neuropsychiatric SLE, the progression of skin diseases, and their systemic implications. Notably, studies underscored the role of high disease activity and specific antibodies in the development of neuropsychiatric symptoms and the progression of cutaneous manifestations. The review emphasizes the need for an interdisciplinary approach to managing SLE, considering the interplay between its dermatological and neurological manifestations. It suggests that tailored treatment strategies, early detection, and comprehensive care are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Bariatric surgery is a critical strategy in managing morbid obesity. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have revolutionized perioperative care in this field. This systematic review aims to synthesize current evidence on the impact of ERAS protocols on patient-centered outcomes in bariatric surgery. A comprehensive search across multiple databases was conducted, adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies involving adult patients undergoing bariatric surgery and focusing on the implementation and outcomes of ERAS protocols were included. Data extraction and analysis emphasized patient recovery, well-being, and satisfaction. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria. The review revealed that ERAS protocols are associated with reduced postoperative recovery times, decreased hospital stays, and enhanced patient satisfaction. Notably, ERAS protocols effectively reduced complications and optimized resource utilization in bariatric surgery. Comparative insights from non-bariatric surgeries highlighted the versatility and adaptability of ERAS protocols across different surgical disciplines. ERAS protocols significantly improve patient-centered outcomes in bariatric surgery. Their adoption facilitates a patient-focused approach, accelerating recovery and enhancing overall patient well-being. The findings advocate for the broader implementation of ERAS protocols in surgical care, emphasizing the need for continuous refinement to meet evolving healthcare demands. Smoking is a well-established risk factor for stroke, yet its impact on stroke prognosis remains complex and multifaceted. This systematic review aims to elucidate the relationship between smoking and various stroke outcomes, including response to treatment and long-term recovery. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of four fundamental studies that examined the prognosis of stroke in smokers, focusing on clinical outcomes post-endovascular treatment, response to antiplatelet therapy, incidence of post-stroke delirium, and the effectiveness of thrombolysis treatment. The studies varied in design, including observational, retrospective, and post hoc trial analyses. The review reveals that smoking may paradoxically predict better clinical outcomes in specific treatment scenarios, such as post-endovascular treatment and when using clopidogrel. However, smokers also demonstrated higher rates of ischemic stroke and post-stroke delirium. Notably, the smoker's paradox  in thrombolysis treatment was not supported. These findings highlight the need for personalized treatment approaches based on smoking status. Smoking has a complex and significant impact on stroke prognosis. While some benefits in specific treatment contexts were observed, the overall evidence strongly advises against smoking due to its adverse health consequences. This article provides a comprehensive overview of these complications, aiding healthcare professionals in their management and patients in understanding the risks associated with bariatric surgery. The review explores the short-term complications of bariatric surgery, emphasizing anastomotic leaks, strictures, hemorrhages, infections, marginal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and dumping syndrome. It provides insights into the diagnosis and management of these complications, emphasizing the importance of early recognition and intervention.
