Nel 1943-44 Viktor Ullmann compone a Theresienstadt l'opera in un atto "L'Imperatore di Atlantide" (Der Kaiser von Atlantis), su libretto di Peter Kien. Il volume ricostruisce la genesi dell'opera e ne descrive i percorsi narrativi e gli influssi musicali (dal cabaret stilizzato di Kurt Weill, alla dodecafonia e al "Canto della Terra" di Mahler), indagando le ragioni per cui lo spettacolo non fu mai rappresentato all'interno del ghetto. In 1943-44 Viktor Ullmann composed in Theresienstadt the one-act "The Emperor of Atlantis" (Der Kaiser von Atlantis), on a libretto by Peter Kien. The bookre constructs the genesis of the work and describes its narrative paths and musical influences (from Kurt Weill's stylized cabaret, dodecaphony and Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde"), investigating the reasons why the show was never performed inside of the ghetto.

Negli anni in cui s'impone come direttore d'orchestra e compositore il giovane Richard Strauss entra in contatto con Cosima Wagner e Gustav Mahler. In seguito collabora per quasi 25 anni con lo scrittore e drammaturgo Hugo von Hofmannstahl. L'articolo ricostruisce gli sviluppi di tali rapporti attraverso le lettere dei persoanggi coinvolti. In the years in which he established himself as conductor and composer, the Young Richard Strauss came into contact with Cosima Wagner and Gustav Mahler. Afterwards he collaborated for almost 25 years with Hugo von Hofmannstahl. The article reconstructs the developments of these relationships through the letters of the people involved.

Eseguite per la prima volta nella basilica di San Marco il 13 settembre 1956, le Choral-Variationen uber das Weinachtslied “Vom Himmel hoch...” (1955-56) di Stravinsky sono una reinvenzione originale e creativa delle Canonische Veränderungen BWV 796 di J.S. Bach, che presenta una profonda relazione con la struttura architettonica e i simboli della basilica, ma anche - in maniera più segreta - con il quadrato magico SATOR / AREPO / TENET / OPERA / ROTAS and e con la musica di Anton Webern. First performed in the Basilica of St. Mark on 13th September 1956, Stravinky’s Choral Variations on the Christmas Carol “Vom Himmel hoch...” (1955-56) are an original and creative reinvention of the Canonische Veränderungen BWV 796 by J.S. Bach, which has a deep relationship with the architectural structure and the symbols of the Basilica, and also – but more secretly – with the Magic square SATOR / AREPO / TENET / OPERA / ROTAS and with the music of Anton Webern.

Il saggio ricostruisce il percorso di riappropriazione dell'identità ebraica di Arnold Schoenberg, facendo riferimento - in modo particolare - agli eventi che hanno determinato la conversione all'ebraismo, agli scritti politici del 1933-38, all'epistolario con Thomas Mann durante l'esilio negli Stati Uniti e alla genesi e concezione poetica e musicale di A survivor from Warsaw op. 46 (1947). The essay reconstructs the path of re-appropriation of Arnold Schoenberg's Jewish identity, referring - in particular - to the events that led to the conversion to Judaism, to the political writings of 1933-38, to the correspondence with Thomas Mann during the exile in the United States and the genesis and poetic and musical conception of A survivor from Warsaw op. 46 (1947).

Il corale matalizio "Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her" (Dall'alto dei cieli io giungo) è stato realizzato da Martin Lutero sulla base della melodia popolare "Ich komm aus fremden Landen her" e fu pubblicato per la prima volta a Wittenberg nel 1535. Assai diffuso in tutta l'area culturale tedesca, questo brano è stato ripreso, tra gli altri, anche da J.S. Bach, sia nel "Weinachts-Oratorium" BWV 248 che nelle "Canonische Veraenderungen" per organo BWV 796 e 796a. Il saggio ricostruisce il contesto in cui vide la luce la versione originale del canto natalizio e si sofferma sull'interesse di Bach per la numerologia e sulle "citazioni nascoste" in molte sue opere, incluse le "Veraenderungen" sul corale di Lutero. La parte conclusiva saggio è dedicata alla versione per coro e orchestra dell'opera bachiana realizzata da Igor Stravinsky mel 1956 e dunque, in senso più generale, ai rapporti del compositore russo con il contrappunto, il serialismo e la musica di Anton Webern. The Christmas choir "Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her" was made by Martin Luther based on the popular melody "Ich komm aus fremden Landen her" and was published for the first time in Wittenberg in 1535. Widely spread throughout the German cultural area, this passage was taken up, among others, also by JS Bach, both in the "Weinachts-Oratorium" BWV 248 and in the "Canonische Veraenderungen" for organ BWV 796 and 796a. The essay reconstructs the context in which the original version of the Christmas carol came to light and focuses on Bach's interest in numerology and the "hidden quotations" in many of his works, including the "Veraenderungen" on Luther's choral. The final part of the essay is dedicated to the version for choir and orchestra of the Bachian opera created by Igor Stravinsky in 1956 and therefore, in a more general sense, to the relations of the Russian composer with Anton Webern's counterpoint, serialism and music.

Il 13 settembre 1956, Stravinsky diresse nella basilica di San Marco a Venezia la prima esecuzione del "Canticum Sacrum" (1955), insieme con le "Variazioni-corali sulla canto natalizio Vom Himmel hoch…" (1955-56). Il "Canticum" era stato realizzato su commissione del Festival delle Biennale e costituisce un esempio dell'approccio del compositore alla tecnica dodecafonica. Le "Variazioni-corali" presentano quasi il medesimo organico del "Canticum" e sono invece da considerarsi come una sorta di ripensamento creativo delle "Variazioni canoniche" BWV 796-796a di Johann Sebastian Bach. September 13th 1956, Stravinsky conducted at the basilica of St. Mark in Venice the first performance of the "Canticum Sacrum" (1955), together with the "Choral-Variations on the Christmas Carol Vom Himmel hoch...” (1955-56). This work is not only the transcription for mixed chorus and orchestra of the "Canonische Varänderungen" BWV 796-796a, but also an original and creative reinvention of Bach’s organ masterpiece of 1746-47, that has a deep relation with the architectural structure of the church. In ‘Variations II-V’ the composer introduced the chorus, but singing only the first four verses of Martin Luther’s text, and under some aspects the score reveals - like the musice of the "Canticum Sacrum" - the attraction of Stravinsky towards the music of Anton Webern.

Il saggio ricostruisce la genesi di "The Rake's Progress" (La carriera di un libertino, 1947-51) di Igor Stravinsky, anche in relazione all'omonima serie di quadri e incisioni di William Hogarth e soffermandosi sulla contrapposizione rappresentativa e di linguaggio musicale che caratterizza i due personaggi femminili di Anne Truelove e Baba the Turk.

Il volume affronta certi aspetti dell'attività di Igor Stravinsky negli anni Sessanta, sviluppando un percorso articolato in cinque movimenti: "Nice Kids": è il modo in cui Stravinsky definisce John e Jacqueline Kennedy dopo averli incontrati alla Casa Bianca il 18 gennaio 1962, in una serata in cui s’intrecciano mondanità e politica. "Totalitarismi": mentre la critica sovietica lo accusa di essere un cosmopolita decadente e borghese, certi esponenti del nazismo descrivono Stravinsky come un tipico esponente del “bolscevismo culturale”. Il viaggio di Stravinsky in America nel 1939, si trasforma dunque in una nuova tappa del suo esilio. "Mosca e Leningrado": nel 1962 Stravinsky festeggia il suo 80° compleanno e si lascia convincere – un po’ a sorpresa – a ritornare in patria per dirigere alcuni concerti a Mosca e Leningrado. Il viaggio diventa un’occasione per fare i conti con il suo passato. "Intorno a Babij Jar": Stravinsky ha sempre detestato Šostakovič e quando lo incontra a Mosca, nel 1962, lo tratta assai freddamente, con la chiara intenzione di umiliarlo: non sa ovviamente quanto sia stato difficile sopravvivere al “Grande terrore” e che Šostakovič ha appena composto la Sinfonia “Babij Jar”, un drammatico affresco della persecuzione degli ebrei e della società sovietica prima e dopo la guerra. "Palermo e oltre": nel novembre 1963 il “grande vecchio” approda a Palermo e dirige un concerto al Teatro Biondo. Subito dopo giunge la notizia dell’omicidio di Dallas e Stravinsky dirige a Roma un concerto in memoria del presidente Kennedy.

The potential contribution of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) in the presentation of tumor cell Ags remains unclear, and some controversies exist with regard to the ability of pDCs to phagocytose cell-derived particulate Ags and cross-present them to MHC class I–restricted T lymphocytes. In this study, we show that human pDCs, although inefficient in the internalization of cell membrane fragments by phagocytosis, can efficiently acquire membrane patches and associated molecules from cancer cells of different histotypes. The transfer of membrane patches to pDCs occurred in a very short time and required cell-to-cell contact. Membrane transfer also included intact HLA complexes, and the acquired Ags could be efficiently recognized on pDCs by tumor-specific CD8+ T cells. Remarkably, pDCs isolated from human colon cancer tissues displayed a strong surface expression of epithelial cell adhesion molecule, indicating that the exchange of exogenous Ags between pDCs and tumor cells also can occur in vivo. These data demonstrate that pDCs are well suited to acquire membrane patches from contiguous tumor cells by a cell-to-cell contact–dependent mechanism that closely resembles “trogocytosis.” This phenomenon may allow pDCs to proficiently present tumor cell–derived Ags, despite limited properties of endophagocytosis.

The cephalochordate amphioxus is the closest living invertebrate relative of the vertebrates and therefore it can provide useful insights on the evolution of the adaptive immune system. In fact some components of the immune system are present in amphioxus but many other features are lacking. A proto-MHC region has been identified by chromosome walking and the presence of T cell receptor has been demonstrated despite the absence of true lymphocytes. Moreover a further important step on the study of the amphioxus immune system is represented by the recent availability of the genome of Branchiostoma floridae that will allow to better understand how many genes code for immunological molecules involved in adaptive immune system pathways of amphioxus.
