1. Is it Possible to Detect a Rotating Spherical Colloidal Particle?

Abstract: A single micrometer‐size spherical colloid has been set in rotation by transfer of light orbital angular momentum. This particle is floating at an air–water interface. Steady‐state rotational frequencies of the order of one hertz have been observed, depending on the topological charge of the beam and on its power, in agreement with expected values. The detection is performed using the rotational Doppler shift of the diffused light. Two time constants have been evidenced in the rotational velocity dynamics. The first one is related to the friction of the colloid with the fluid (air and water), whereas the other one is principally associated with the wall friction of the air–liquid interface with the container. This measurement technique makes it possible to identify dynamic parameters of the rotational movement of any spherical object, which is usually impossible to detect.

2. Optical orbital angular momentum transfer to electronic currents

Abstract: Light orbital angular momentum (OAM) is transformed into an electronic current loop in a copper coil, by absorption of the optical radiation. The measurement of this current, that is in the 10 ^−17 A range, makes it possible to evaluate and quantify the OAM carried by an electromagnetic wave in the optical domain. In particular, it determines unambiguously the torque generated by the beam and its topological charge. The induced current depends on the optical power and on the wavelength, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. Further possible developments towards an optical torque-meter are then discussed.

3. The Arago–Poisson Spot: New Applications for an Old Concept

Abstract: Herein, we report some specific properties and applications of the so-called Arago–Poisson spot in optics. This spot results from the diffraction of a plane wave by an occulting disk that leads to a small bright spot in its shadow. We discuss some of the properties of such beams. In particular, we focus on the ultimate size that can be reached for these beams, which depends on the diameter of the disk, the wavelength, and the distance from the disk. We also highlight self-healing and faster-than-light properties. Applications are then proposed. The applications mainly deal with new traps with nanometer sizes dedicated to the trapping of nanoparticles. We also discuss beams that change frequency during propagation and their application for signal delivery in a precise and determined area.

4. Dynamics and detection of the Newton-Wigner time delays at interfaces using a swivelling method

Abstract: Abstract Evanescent waves are ubiquitous at interfaces with optical, seismic or acoustic waves, and also with electron, neutron or atom beams. Newton was the first to suspect that both small time delays and spatial shifts exist during total internal reflection. However, these effects are so tiny that the spatial shifts were only observed in 1947 in optics, whereas the time delay values predicted by the Wigner model in the 10−14 s range in optics had to await femtosecond lasers to be detected with difficulty. The spatial shifts have been isolated in many areas but the time delays, though fundamental, generally remain out of reach, particularly with particles. In textbooks usually both quantities are supposed to be simply linked. Here we report, using swivelling detectors, that the spatial and temporal measurements are intimately intermingled, especially in the so-called cyclical regime. Indeed, while the spatial shift does not depend on the type of detection, the measured time delay can be positive, negative or zero, but controllable. We also discuss how such intricate measurements of spatial and temporal effects allow crucial time penalties to be eliminated in guided soliton propagation, and should be used to unambiguously identify the Newton-Wigner time delays for particles.

5. Frequency changes during the propagation of a light beam

Abstract: The energy and therefore the frequency of electromagnetic fields are quantities which are generally considered to be conserved in free space propagation. However, we observe here a frequency varying optical wave in free space propagation. The light comes from an Arago spot. Its frequency changes due to the rotational Doppler effect. More precisely, the light diffracted by a two-dimensional asymmetric object carries orbital angular momentum that varies with distance. As the object rotates, the frequency of the diffracted light experiences different rotational Doppler shifts along propagation. It varies in a discrete quantized way as it propagates. It can be adjusted, without violation of the conservation of energy. Since this phenomenon is deeply rooted in the diffraction process, it sheds some new light on this still open issue.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the decomposition of a fundamental Gaussian beam transmitted behind an absorbing propeller-like object. We use a Laguerre Gaussian basis which modes carry orbital angular momentum. The main contributing components correspond to modes having the same rotational symmetry as the object, thus enabling pattern recognition. When the object is rotated, the frequency of the modes of the basis experiences a rotational Doppler shift characterizing the movement, that can be easily detected. Potential applications in target recognition and rotation identification are then considered, including rotational Doppler shifts using microwaves.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the observation of a transverse Doppler shift in the optical domain. It occurs when a receiving system travels perpendicularly to the propagation direction of a Gaussian beam. Shifts of a few tens of Hz have been evidence for a detector moving in the mm/s range. The shift increases as the detector is far from the beam axis. The observations fully agree with theoretical calculations on the propagation of Gaussian beams. It can be observed for any kind of waves, including radio and acoustic waves. Practical consequences are then discussed, especially for techniques using Doppler measurements in microsystems.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the mechanical excitation of a 220 μm thick thermoplastic film in its amorphous state by the radiation pressure of light. By modulating a low power visible laser (from 100 to 600 mW) at low frequencies (below 100 Hz), we observe a deformation of the film interfaces. The phenomenon, that is independent of the laser wavelength, is amplified at a resonant frequency and reaches 0.68 μm. The deformation is reversible and varies linearly with the optical power. Using the damped oscillator model, we show that the resonant frequency depends on the surface tension of the film. The associated free energy is then compared with the energy lost, taking into account the contribution of the damping corresponding to the imaginary part of the Young's modulus.

Abstract: International audience; This Letter reports the observation of a rotational Doppler shift on reflected beams carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM). More precisely, we study the beat frequency of two optical beams carrying OAM with opposite signs, reflected on a right angle prism. We show that the interference of the two beams leads to a daisy-like pattern that rotates at twice the rotating frequency of the prism. The rotational Doppler frequency shift is equal to the OAM topological charge change times the rotational frequency. Possible applications in the positioning and detection of rotation of objects are then discussed.

Abstract: International audience; We report a significant thinning of an amorphous chalcogenide film (at least 5% of its initial thickness) from the Ge-Sb-Se system deposited by RF magnetron sputtering method on a borosilicate substrate, namely a BK7. This phenomenon is due to a resonant symmetric vibration mode at a low frequency, in the tens of Hertz range. By exciting the material with modulated near-infrared light (lambda = 1.55 mu m), we observe three transmission peaks of a probing light at slightly different frequencies of modulation. We assign these resonances to the air/chalcogenide, chalcogenide/BK7 and BK7/air interfaces. Under the effect of the optical modulated radiation pressure, the mechanical deformations of these interfaces show the contribution of associated surface tensions.

We study by an experimental approach coupled with theoretical considerations the rotational shift of a fundamental laser light reflected on an ideal rotating propeller. We decompose the reflected light on a Laguerre–Gaussian basis and show that only modes having the same rotational symmetry as the propeller are involved in the decomposition. The latter experience a frequency shift proportional to the rotation frequency of the propeller and the topological charge of the beam. Extensions of this work in the microwave domain are then considered.

Abstract: International audience; Optical trapping has offered new potentialities in the manipulation of bacteria, living cells, organelles, or microparticles in micrometric volumes. Its extension to the nanometer scale may create exceptional opportunities in many areas of science. We report here the trapping of a single 100 nm radius particle in a nanometric volume. The trapping relies on stimulated emission of the fluorescent particle in the evanescent wave of a totally reflected Arago spot on a glass-liquid interface. The trapping volume is a 200 nm height and 125 nm radius cylinder. Such a nano-trap, aside from applications in nano-physics, may echo the needs of life scientists to manipulate ever-smaller biological samples.

Abstract: Generation of subwavelength beam sizes is a fascinating challenge with several implications. The observation of a 120 nm laser spot in the visible part of the spectrum is reported here. It has a size variation of less than 10% in a distance of 50 µ m along the axis of propagation. This so-called Arago spot results from the diffraction of the light from a laser diode by the edges of an absorbing disk. Applications are discussed and hollow beams carrying orbital angular momentum with a 400 nm diameter dark spot in the center are evidenced. This paves the way toward atom lithography via atom guiding or new spectroscopy on forbidden transitions.

Abstract: A method is presented to improve the determination of the rotational velocity of an on-axis spinning object. It uses the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of an electromagnetic wave at 2.47 GHz, and measures the rotational Doppler frequency shift of a reflected wave. From this shift, the rotational velocity and the direction of rotation can be directly estimated with very good accuracy.

Abstract: International audience; This Letter reports on a rotational Doppler effect obtained from a rotating rod illuminated by a fundamental Gaussian laser beam. More specifically, we decompose the transmitted light behind the rotating rod into Laguerre-Gaussian modes and investigate the associated frequency shifts. The main contributing modes correspond to modes having the same rotational symmetry as the rotating object. Furthermore, their shifts equal the topological charge of the beam times the rotational frequency of the object. Abstract: International audience; Wave particle duality, also called complementarity, is deeply rooted in the heart of quantum theory. It is fully exemplified in the famous Wheeler's delayed choice experiment where the choice of the wave nature (ability to interfere) or the particle like behavior (path distinguishability) is introduced a posteriori. We perform here a delayed choice experiment in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, using a classical laser beam and twisted light in a given mode. We entangle the polarization and the twisted internal degrees of freedom, with the which-path-information external degree of freedom of the beam. The particle behavior of light arises from the quantization of the orbital angular momentum. It is demonstrated from torque and light power measurements within 10% accuracy. We then experimentally evidence that the particle or wave behavior of light can be chosen a posteriori, even after the light has left the interferometer, at the moment of the detection.

Abstract: International audience; The rotation of a sub-millimeter size disk over a water bath is reported. The origin of the rotation arises from the transfer of angular momentum from a plane wave diffracted by an asymmetrical picture printed on the disk. Because of its hydrophobic character, the viscous friction contribution to the rotational motion of the object floating on the air/liquid interface is weak. From the driving optical torque and the steady-state rotation, we measure the contribution of the line tension in the femto-Newton range.

Abstract: International audience; The circular phased antenna array is a common way to generate waves bearing Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) in the radio frequency band, but the directivity of this antenna is relatively low. To overcome this drawback, in this paper, we use a Fabry-Perot cavity to enhance the directivity of an OAM antenna based on a circular phased array of patch antennas. The Fabry-Perot cavity consists of a ground plane, an air cavity and a partially reflecting surface (PRS) made of metallic strips. Simulation results show that the OAM antenna achieves a directivity of 16.2 dB with an enhancement of 9.2 dB in E and H planes. The index-varying flat plate generates an electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum. We then extract the various modes from the radiated field.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the trapping of micrometer colloids using the evanescent wave from a multimode cylindrical optical waveguide. We show that the particle trapping is a two step process. With a low power visible laser injected in the device, particles are first captured at a radial distance twice greater than the diameter of the waveguide and then drawn near to it. In a second time particles turn around the waveguide and get trapped in a direction corresponding to the TM polarization of the laser. Such a device could be easily implemented in microfluidic systems in order to coat surfaces or to control particles deposition and assembly. Conversely, it could find applications in filtration process to aggregate and remove colloidal pollutants.

Abstract: International audience; Electromagnetic waves could carry orbital angular momentum. Such momentum can be transferred to macroscopic objects and can make them rotating under a constant torque. Based on experimental observations, we investigate the origin of the orbital angular momentum and energy transfer. Due to the angular momentum and energy conservations, we show that the angular momentum transfer is due to the change of the sign of angular momentum upon reflection. This leads to a rotational Doppler shift of the electromagnetic wave frequency ensuring energy conservation.; Certaines ondes électro-magnétiques peuvent transporter du moment angulaire orbital. Celui-ci peut être transféré à un objet macroscopique et ainsi le mettre en mouvement grâce à un couple constant. Suite à des observations expéerimentales, nous étudions l'origine du transfert de moment cinétique et d'énergie. En considérant les lois de conservation, nous montrons qu'il a pour origine le changement de signe du moment angulaire à la réexion et entraîneun décalage Doppler rotationnel de la fréquence de l'onde électromagnétique.

Abstract: International audience; Michelson interferometry is one of the most widely used techniques for accuracy measurements. Its main characteristic feature is to infer a displacement in one of the arm of the interferometer from a phase measurement. Two different twisted beams, also called vortex beams, with opposite twisted rotations in each arm of the interferometer interfere in a daisy flower like pattern. The number of petals is twice the topological charge. Their position depends on the relative phase of the beams. Naked eye detection of 44 pm displacements is achieved. The sensitivity of such an interferometer together with possible further improvements and applications are then discussed.

Abstract: International audience; In the exchange of orbital angular momentum between an electromagnetic wave and a copper ring we examine the origin of the Angular Momentum. We then investigate the transfer mechanism between the microwave and the object, and compare it with other mechanisms. We evidence a transfer mechanism based on the reflection of the electromagnetic field on the copper ring. In particular, at a microscopic scale, we show that the electromagnetic field induces alternative electric currents in the ring, with a small drift. Although little, the resistivity of copper leads to a force that rotates the ring. The estimation of the torque, which is of the order of 10 −8 Nm, is in good agreement with the experimental measurements. We also show that the transfer of electromagnetic orbital angular momentum to objects could be a way to measure the orbital angular momentum carried by electromagnetic fields, and we discuss possible applications. Abstract: International audience; We present a novel way to generate waves bearing Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) in a circular waveguide by using two monopole antennas. The OAM mode l = 1 is generated by a combination of the classical TM01 and TE21 modes of the circular waveguide. Two printed monopole antennas are used to create these two modes. The design procedure of this novel "OAM antenna" is presented. The resulting electrical field distribution and the radiation and phase patterns evidence the properties of waves bearing OAM. Abstract: International audience; We report on the time evolution of the optical activity of a thinning liquid film containing glucose, and confined between two glass slides. This dynamics strongly depends on the presence of surfactant molecules. With sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), we evidence favorable interactions of sugar molecules with the sulfate group. As previously observed for a freely suspended soap film in the air (see Emile et al., 2013), this corresponds to an anchoring of glucose molecules at the interface. For glucose alone, we also highlight a molecular rearrangement that is not instantaneous and occurs after several minutes. This interfacial organization leads to an unusual giant optical activity that is different with or without SDS. Molecular simulations confirm the anchoring of the glucose molecules at the glass/liquid interface, and show a different molecular orientation in each case

Abstract: Most of the vibrating mechanisms of optofluidic systems are based on local heating of membranes that induces liquid flow.We report here a new type of diaphragm pump in a liquid film based on the optical radiation pressure force. We modulate a low power laser that generates, at resonance, a symmetric vibration of a free standing soap film. The film lifetime strongly varies from 56 s at low power (2 mW) to 2 s at higher power (70 mW). Since the laser beam only acts mechanically on the interfaces, such a pump could be easily implemented on delicate microequipment on chips or in biological systems.

Abstract: International audience; The ability to optically rotate bodies offers new degrees of control of micro-objects with applications in various domains including micro-electromechanical-systems (MEMS), biomanipulations or optofluidics. Here we demonstrate the optically induced rotation of simple asymmetric two-dimensional objects using plane waves originating either from ordinary laser sources or from black body radiation. The objects are floating on an air/water interface. We observe a steady state rotation depending on the light intensity and on the asymmetry of the object. We interpret this rotation in terms of light diffraction by the edges of the object. Such systems could be easily implemented in optofluidic devices to induce liquid flow without the need for special light sources.

Abstract: International audience; – The measurement of the topological charge of a vortex beam is demonstrated using the diffraction pattern produced by hole wheel. The resulting mandala-like interference pattern depends on the number of holes relatively to the topological charge. The interference at the centre of the pattern-bright or dark-enables us to determine the topological charge in a procedure when hole wheels with different number of holes are applied. This method is direct and wavelength independent. It does not require any image analysis and could find applications in classical telecommunications or quantum optics using twisted light.

Abstract: Le temps a la reflexion, ou delai de Newton-Wigner, est un element-cle pour caracteriser l'interaction de la lumiere avec une interface. Nous montrons que l'on peut avoir acces experimentalement a ce temps pour plusieurs interfaces. Dans le cas de la reflexion sur un reseau metallique, on montre que ce temps n'est pas equivalent au decalage spatial de type Goos-Hanchen auquel il est associe. Dans le cas standard de la reflexion totale ou ce temps etait jusqu'alors cache, deux temps de reflexion absolus, tel celui qu'avait envisage Newton, sont isoles et atteignent quelques dizaines de femtosecondes. Des temps de reflexion sont attendus dans d'autres domaines de la physique, pour la reflexion d'ondes, acoustiques ou sismiques par exemple, mais aussi pour la reflexion de particules comme les electrons, les neutrons ou les atomes.

Abstract: Les etats propres d'un laser constituent un outil de choix pour etudier les differents roles joues par le bruit dans un systeme. D'une part, si on veut isoler un effet petit difficilement accessible par les methodes classiques, ces etats propres permettent de realiser des mesures differentielles de haute precision, a condition de pouvoir eliminer les bruits mecaniques, optiques, electroniques. A titre d'exemple, nous avons utilise les etats propageant et contrapropageant d'un laser ionique en anneau pour mesurer une interaction fondamentale faible: la birefringence magnetochirale. Cette birefringence se manifeste en effet par une petite variation d'indice selon le sens de parcours de l'anneau, de l'ordre de Δn . 10 -11 , independante de la polarisation. A l'oppose, les deux etats propres d'un laser du type Fabry-Perot constituent un systeme ideal pour explorer les resonances stochastiques a deux dimensions. Les resonances stochastiques par inhibition et par rotation sont isolees en presence de bruits blancs gaussiens tant pour les bruits optiques que magnetiques. L'utilisation possible de l'emission spontanee comme bruit actif est demontree.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the vibration of a thin soap film based on the optical radiation pressure force. The modulated low power laser induces a counter gravity flow in a vertical free standing draining film. The thickness of the soap film is then higher in the upper region than in the lower region of the film. Moreover, the lifetime of the film is dramatically increased by a factor of 2. Since the laser beam only acts mechanically on the film interfaces, such a film can be implemented in an optofluidic diaphragm pump, the interfaces behaving like a vibrating membrane and the liquid in-between being the fluid to be pumped. Such a pump could then be used in delicate micro-equipment, in chips where temperature variations are detrimental and even in biological systems.

Abstract: We demonstrate that the interaction between atoms and a Gaussian beam changes the Lorentzian resonance into a so-called Rabi-Lorentzian resonance profile. The existence of such profiles is experimentally evidenced in a dark resonance situation for metastable (4) He, in the absence of any external perturbation. A topological mechanism is shown theoretically to account for the measured profiles. We observe a 3% systematic residual with respect to a pure Lorentzian profile, which could play a role in the search of high precision in the measurement of fundamental constants.

Abstract: The dynamics of a solid-state laser sustaining the oscillation of two orthogonally polarized eigenstates and passively Q switched by a ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{4+}:\mathrm{Y}\mathrm{A}\mathrm{G}$ (YAG denotes yttrium aluminum garnet) saturable absorber is experimentally investigated. A set of rate equations in which the orientation-dependent interactions between the intensities and the saturable absorber have been taken into account is developed to describe theoretically the evolution of such a laser. When a [001]-cut ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{4+}:\mathrm{Y}\mathrm{A}\mathrm{G}$ plate is used, orthogonally polarized pulsed eigenstates are emitted either successively or simultaneously, depending on the orientations of the eigenstates with respect to the crystallographic axes. Namely, in the latter case, beat note carrying pulses are emitted, whose beat frequency is continuously tunable. On the other hand, when a [111]-cut ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{4+}:\mathrm{Y}\mathrm{A}\mathrm{G}$ plate is used, the simultaneity regime is never observed. All experimental results, obtained using a diode pumped Nd:YAG laser, are well confirmed by the theoretical model.

Abstract: The fundamental linewidth of usual lasers containing linear phase and loss anisotropies is experimentally and theoretically investigated. It is proved that the eigenstates of such lasers are in general nonorthogonal, leading to the prediction of an important excess noise factor. The experiment evidences an enhancement of the Schawlow-Townes linewidth up to a factor of nearly one hundred, in good agreement with theory.

Abstract: The excess noise factor due to the nonorthogonality of the transverse modes of a geometrically stable cavity subject to large diffraction losses is measured. This transverse excess noise factor is isolated from other sources of modification of the laser linewidth due to a differential measurement method, leading to the experimental evidence of values as large as 13 in cylindrical symmetry. Moreover, it is shown experimentally that the introduction of a well-chosen second diffracting aperture inside the cavity permits one to drastically reduce the overall laser excess noise factor, without altering the laser losses and intracavity power.

Abstract: We report on the exchange of orbital angular momentum between an electromagnetic wave and a 30 cm diameter ring. Using a turnstile antenna in the GHz range, we induce a torque on a suspended copper strip of the order of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{N}\text{ }\mathrm{m}$. Rotations of a few degrees and accelerations up to $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ $\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}/{s}^{2}$ are observed. A linear dependence of the acceleration as a function of the applied power is found. There are many applications in the detection of angular momentum in electromagnetics, in acoustics, and also in the magnetization of nanostructures.

Abstract: International audience; The question of the transfer of angular momentum from light to objects is a key issue in optical tweezers and thus raises issues in physics, chemistry, and biology. Most of the attempts have been performed either with spin angular momentum using light's polarization or using orbital angular momentum with twisted beams. We experimentally demonstrate here the exchange of angular momentum from a linearly polarized plane wave to a two dimensional asymmetric object. More precisely, we show that the diffracted light from a snail-shaped mask carries local orbital angular momentum whose topological charge depends on the symmetry of the object. This opens the way to a means to produce micrometer-sized twisted beams from a high power laser or even pulsed beams.

Abstract: International audience; The self-interference pattern of a Laguerre Gaussian beam using a Fresnel bi-prism is shown to be very different from what could be expected from a usual laser beam. Actually it resembles the interference pattern that could be obtained using a double slit experiment. The interferences are shifted and the topological charge and its sign can be readily determined considering the shift order of the pattern only. However, since there is no diffraction nor absorption loses unlike in a double slit interference, such a set up could be used even for low power twisted beams or beams with high topological charge. Even fractional topological charges could be determined with an absolute precision of 0.05.

Abstract: Laser light is injected in a free standing horizontal draining soap film through the glass frame sustaining the film. Two propagation regimes are clearly identified depending on the film thickness. At the beginning of the drainage, the soap film behaves as a multimode-one dimensional optofiuidic waveguide. In particular, we observe that the injected light creates a bottleneck in the film and part of the injected light is refracted leading to whiskers. At the end of the drainage where the film thickness is below 1μm, there is a strong selection among the various possible optical modes in the film, and part of the light is defiected. This leads to a self selection of the mode propagation inside the film.
