1. Methanol Production from Pyrolysis Oil Gasification—Model Development and Impacts of Operating Conditions

Abstract

A novel process model simulating methanol production through pyrolysis oil gasification was developed, validated, then used to predict the effect of operating conditions on methanol production yield. The model comprised gasification, syngas post-treatment, and methanol synthesis units. The model was validated using experimental data from the literature, and the results obtained by the model were consistent with reference data. The simulation results revealed that gasification temperature has a significant impact on syngas composition. Indeed, rising temperature from 400 °C to 600 °C leads to higher syngas stoichiometric number (SN) value. Conversely, SN value decreases when the gasifier temperature is above 1000 °C. Moisture content in pyrolysis oil also affects both syngas composition and SN value; an increase in the first (from 10 to 30%) leads to an increase in SN value. The Rectisol unit deeply influences the syngas SN value and methanol yield, the best results being obtained with operating conditions of −20 °C and 40 bar. Increasing the operating temperature of the methanol synthesis unit from 150 °C to 250 °C leads to an increase in the yield of methanol production; the yield decreases beyond 250 °C. Although high pressures favor the methanol production yield, the operating pressure in the synthesis unit is limited at 50 bar for practical considerations (e.g., equipment price, equipment requirements, or operational risks).

Abstract

International audience; Chromogranin A (CgA) is a key luminal actor of secretory granule biogenesis at the trans‐Golgi network (TGN) level but the molecular mechanisms involved remain obscure. Here, we investigated the possibility that CgA acts synergistically with specific membrane lipids to trigger secretory granule formation. We show that CgA preferentially interacts with the anionic glycerophospholipid phosphatidic acid (PA). In accordance, bioinformatic analysis predicted a PA‐binding domain (PABD) in CgA sequence that effectively bound PA (36:1) or PA (40:6) in membrane models. We identified PA (36:1) and PA (40:6) as predominant species in Golgi and granule membranes of secretory cells, and we found that CgA interaction with these PA species promotes artificial membrane deformation and remodeling. Furthermore, we demonstrated that disruption of either CgA PABD or phospholipase D (PLD) activity significantly alters secretory granule formation in secretory cells. Our findings show for the first time the ability of CgA to interact with PLD‐generated PA, which allows membrane remodeling and curvature, key processes necessary to initiate secretory granule budding.

6. Simulation and techno-economic assessment of bio-methanol production from pine biomass, biochar and pyrolysis oil

Abstract

In this paper, a model simulating bio-methanol production through gasification of different woody bioresources (pine biomass, biochar, and pyrolysis oil) is investigated using process simulation software Aspen Plus. The process consists of gasification, syngas post-treatment, methanol synthesis with recycling and purification. The model results are used as inputs in a techno-economic analysis of the process to assess the economic feasibility, as well as a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the impact of key variables. The economic evaluation is conducted by using three indicators, i.e., the net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), and discounted payback period (DPBP). The sensitivity analysis is achieved to investigate the economic feasibility of different plant scales, changing parameters such as bio-methanol price, feedstock price, total capital investment (TCI), and plant lifespan. The preliminary economic evaluation results revealed that bio-methanol production from biochar can be an attractive option. The IRR obtained in the biochar scenario is greater, compared to using pine biomass. At a minimum plant scale of 1000 tons per day (TPD) and bio-methanol price of 1300$, biochar can achieve an IRR of 5.3%, which is higher than biomass at the same plant scales, although the price of biochar is higher than biomass. The IRR obtained in the pyrolysis oil scenario hardly reaches 5% unless the price considered for bio-methanol is as high as 2500 $/ton at the plant scale of 2000 TPD.

Abstract

Previous work showed that compared to cationic porphyrins under light irradiation, the anionic ones were the strongest tobacco bright yellow cell death inducers. As this result was unexpected in light to literature, it was of importance to try to understand why anionic porphyrins were able to efficiently induce cell detah in tobacco cell suspension. Thus we decided to investigate structure-activity relationships of a serie of anionic porphyrins toward Tobacco Bright Yellow - 2 (TBY-2) cells, namely 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(carboxyphenyl) porphyrin TPPC, its zinc analogue Zn-TPPC, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin TPPS, and its zinc analogue Zn-TPPS, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-phosphonatophenyl) porphyrin TPPP. In particular, their charge states as a function of the pH medium, their abilities to generate reactive oxygen species as well as their spectroscopic and photophysical properties have been investigated and correlated to their biological effect.

Abstract

This study describes the synthesis and characterization of a new zinc porphyrin–fluorescein dyad, the two chromophoric units being covalently linked by a 1,2,3-triazole bridge. The latter was formed by Cu-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The conformational analysis of this dyad (1) was performed by NOESY experiments, suggesting interactions between moieties; density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed clear evidence of a folded conformer, which is stabilized by electrostatic and CH–π interactions. Photophysical measurements demonstrated solvent-dependent energy transfer, with an efficiency of about 40%.

International audience; For the first time, the behaviour of tobacco cell suspensions submitted to four porphyrins was described. The potential killer effect of these photosensitizers on tobacco cells was evaluated. Biological results were correlated with photophysical properties and reactive oxygen species production capacity of tested compounds. Surprisingly, the anionic free base porphyrin showed the strongest phototoxic effect.

International audience; This paper describes a one-pot procedure for acetamide synthesis directly from amines and pyrimidine ester, without any catalyst or coupling agents. The inexpensive and simple reaction conditions are the most important features of this amidation. This reaction was performed with various amines, showing that long range stabilizing interactions (H-bonding and π-stacking) are the driving force for chemoselectivity.
