The present study investigates the relation of procedural transparency and compliance with authorities’ regulations. The underlying assumption is that procedural transparency encourages compliance with regulations. In an incentivized experiment, 666 participants took on the role of a business owner and had to fill in a form and spend a certain amount of their income as compliance costs to adhere to safety rules. In a 2 (Business Size: small vs. big) x 2 (Penalty Rate: equal vs. unequal) x 2 (Penalty Scheme: transparent vs non-transparent) between-subjects design, we investigated whether an unequal penalty rate for small size in contrast to big size businesses had a different effect on compliance when this difference was transparent compared to when it was not transparent. Business income, compliance costs, and audit probability were varied within-subject, over 18 decision rounds. We find that the deterring effect of a higher penalty rate for big size compared to small size businesses under a non-transparent unequal penalty scheme is attenuated when the same information is available. This supports the idea of a backfiring effect and suggest that authorities need to carefully consider what information about their procedures to communicate in order to avoid unintended negative effects of increasing transparency.

- Abstract
The slippery slope framework (SSF) of tax compliance postulates that taxpayers’ compliance behaviour depends on the two dimensions: trust in authorities and power of authorities. In an attempt to overcome common-method biases, the present study tests the main assumptions of the SSF with a sample of 44 countries/regions. Country/region-level trust and power indices are calculated based on experimental data involving 14,509 participants and related to shadow economy estimates and – as an alternative indicator of non-compliance – corruption indices. The results indicate that both trust and power are negatively related to the size of the shadow economy and the extent of corruption. These results emphasise the importance of both SSF dimensions in combating tax evasion and counterproductive behaviour within a society in general.

This preregistration covers a study that compares risky decisions in two different contexts, namely tax decisions and monetarily equivalent loss gambles. The focal aim of this study is to pretest the materials and paradigm for a planned to follow eye-tracking study. In addition, we already preregister the main hypotheses to be tested in the main study as of now, which can already be tested with this pretest data.

26. How does the presentation of explicit expected value information influence tax decisions in the lab?

FOS: Psychology ,expected value ,Psychology ,process tracing ,tax compliance ,Mouselab ,Social and Behavioral Sciences ,rational choice - Abstract
The most influential theory about tax decisions is the standard economic model of tax evasion (A&S model; Allingham & Sandmo, 1972). However, empirical evidence for the model’s predictions is ambiguous and its behavioral implications conflict with observed compliance rates in most countries. A recent first process tracing experiment using MouselabWEB evaluated whether participants’ compliance decisions are in line with the behavioral predictions as well as the implicit process assumptions of the Allingham and Sandmo model (Kogler, Olsen, Mueller, & Kirchler, under review). On the behavioral level, there was a general decrease in compliance with increasing financial attractiveness of tax evasion, however, overall compliance levels were much higher than the standard model would predict. Against the predictions, providing additional explicit information about the expected value (EV) had no influence on tax compliance. However, it is possible that explaining and providing EV information actually would lead to more decisions in line with the A&S model, but this first study did not capture this effect due to specific characteristics of the research design (i.e., clarity of instructions, parameter calibration, or the concrete presentation of explicit EV information). Thus, the aim of this current study is to test the core research question with an improved design, investigating whether tax decisions in the lab are influenced by EV considerations. Accordingly, all parameters, including the EV, are explained in more detail prior to the experiment and we include more check items to control for understanding of instructions, parameters, and the concept of EV. Additionally, we either (i) only explain the EV, (ii) explain and present it as a numerical value, or (iii) explain and present it as a visual cue and compare these three groups against (iv) a control condition where no explicit EV information is provided. We expect these changes to result in a more critical test of the hypothesized effect. Furthermore, it allows us to test whether the different presentation modes of EV information have distinct effects. If, however, the more detailed explanation in combination with explicit expected value information does not lead to more choices in line with the model, this study would be further evidence that EV considerations do not guide tax behavior - not even in a more artificial context.

Stage 1: Sussman and Olivola (2011) reported that people in the US show a stronger preference to avoid tax-related costs than to avoid tax-unrelated monetary costs of the same size and coined the term Tax Aversion to describe the phenomenon. The original Experiment 1 and 2 results indicated that people are willing to incur increased timely costs to receive a discount when it refers to taxes (e.g., “axe-the-tax discount”) than when it just refers to a regular discount (e.g., “customer rewards”). Their paper has received considerable attention and is often cited in tax behavior research when referring to citizens’ general aversion to taxes. We propose close replications of Experiments 1 and 2 in two high-powered studies in the US (N = 600 and N = 700, respectively). Because the original study was conducted in a country that relies on a sales tax system, where consumption taxes are very salient, we additionally propose conducting both replication studies in the UK to test whether the effect also applies to a value added tax system (again N = 600 and N = 700, respectively). The replication studies will test whether Tax Aversion is a stable phenomenon in the US and whether the effect extends to a consumption tax system where payments do not represent an out-of-pocket cost.

29. Does service quality influence attention to audits and fines in tax decisions: A MouselabWEB study

FOS: Psychology ,Psychology ,Social and Behavioral Sciences - Abstract
The standard economic model of tax evasion (A&S model; Allingham & Sandmo, 1972) assumes that taxpayers will underreport their income if the expected return of tax evasion is greater than the sure return from compliance. Thus, tax decisions depend solely on the deterrent effect of the economic consequences of enforcement (e.g., audits and fines). Contrary, the literature on socio-psychological factors of tax compliance suggests that also “soft” factors such as trust, social norms, fairness, and ethical considerations determine compliance. Experiments show that in some cases compliance decisions are influenced mainly by deterrence information (e.g., Alm et al., 1995), while in others more emphasis is placed on socio-psychological factors (e.g., Collins & Plumlee, 1991; for an overview see Kirchler et al., 2010). However, no studies test whether contextual factors systematically influence how taxpayers react to deterrence information. The current study aims to test whether taxpayers’ attentional focus on deterrence information changes as tax authorities provide different levels of service quality (SQ). We manipulate the SQ of a fictional tax authority as high or low by providing help during the tax filing process (i.e., automatic ID filing vs. manual and tedious ID filing) between groups. With MouselabWEB we capture the information acquisition patterns over multiple decision rounds with varying decision-relevant parameters (e.g., audit probabilities and fine levels). In addition to testing whether the manipulation of service quality affects relative compliance, we investigate whether information acquisition patterns differ between the two conditions.

We plan to meta-analytically synthesize the effect of manipulations of different cognitive processing modes (those that qualify as manipulations of intuitive vs. deliberate processing modes) on the share of deontological vs. utilitarian judgments in moral dilemmas. The overarching research question is whether, and if so to which extent, intuitive decision making promotes deontological judgments, while deliberate processing promotes utilitarian judgments.

The aim of this project is to investigate whether moral judgments changed over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, as dependent variables we use data from a large Psychological Science Accelerator (PSA006) project that collected moral dilemma judgments and utilitarianism scale scores from various psychological science laboratories around the world over the course of the year 2020. We link this data with publicly accessible COVID-19-related data as independent variables (i.e., time, case numbers, government responses, news coverage), leveraging within- and between-country spread as well as associated measures and perceptions of the virus as a predictor of changes in moral decision-making.

© The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2021, corrected publication 2022, The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world., This project was supported by funds from: the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Imagine Grant (to E.M.B.); the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (JSPS KAKENHI; 16h03079, 17h00875, 18k12015, and 20h04581 to Y.Y.); the research programme Dipartimenti di Eccellenza from the Ministry of Education University and Research (MIUR to N. - Abstract
The highly influential Allingham and Sandmo model of income tax evasion assumes that taxpayers are driven by utility maximization, choosing evasion over compliance if it yields a higher expected profit. We test the main assumptions of this so-called deterrence approach considering both compliance decisions and the process of information acquisition using MouselabWEB. In an incentivized experiment, 109 participants made 24 compliance decisions with varying information presented for four within-subject factors (the four central model parameters: income, tax rate, audit probability, and fine level). Additionally, explicit expected value information was indicated in one of two conditions. The results reveal that participants attended to all relevant information, a prerequisite for expected value-like calculations. As predicted by the deterrence model, choices were clearly influenced by audit probability and fine level. Against the model assumptions, the presented parameters were not integrated adequately, indicated by a non-monotonic increase of evasion with rising expected rate of return from evasion. Additionally, more transitions between information necessary for calculating expected values did not result in higher model conformity, just as presenting explicit information on expected values. We conclude that deterrence information clearly influences tax compliance decisions in our setting but observed deviations from the deterrence model can be attributed to failures to properly integrate all relevant parameters.

Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. in this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution., Vienna Science and Technology Fund [WWTF VRG13-007]; ERCEuropean Research Council (ERC)European Commission [647910]; CONICET, ArgentinaConsejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas (CONICET); European Social Fund (Comprehensive Development for Implementing Smart Specialization Strategies at the University of Pecs) [EFOP-3.6.1.-16-2016-00004]; Swiss National Science FoundationSwiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)European Commission [PZ00P1_154911]; Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)CGIAR; Comunidad de MadridComunidad de Madrid [2016-T1/SOC-1395]; AEI/FEDER UE [PSI2017-85159-P]; National Science Centre, PolandNational Science Centre, Poland [2015/19/D/HS6/00641]; Joep Lange Institute; Slovak Research and Development AgencySlovak Research and Development Agency [APVV-17-0418]; French National Research Agency 'Investissements d'Avenir' programme grantFrench National Research Agency (ANR) [ANR-15-IDEX-02]; Australian Government Research Training Program ScholarshipAustralian GovernmentDepartment of Industry, Innovation and Science; University Grants Commission, New Delhi, IndiaUniversity Grants Commission, India; Department of Psychology, University of Gothenburg; Beijing Natural Science FoundationBeijing Natural Science Foundation [5184035]; CAS Key Laboratory of Behavioral Science, Institute of Psychology; National Science Foundation Graduate Research FellowshipNational Science Foundation (NSF) [R010138018], C.L. was supported by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF VRG13-007); L.M.D. was supported by ERC 647910 (KINSHIP); D.I.B. and N.I. received funding from CONICET, Argentina; L.K., F.K. and A. - Abstract
peer-reviewed, The slippery slope framework of tax compliance emphasizes the importance of trust in authorities as a substantial determinant of tax compliance alongside traditional enforcement tools like audits and fines. Using data from an experimental scenario study in 44 nations from five continents (N = 14,509), we find that trust in authorities and power of authorities, as defined in the slippery slope framework, increase tax compliance intentions and mitigate intended tax evasion across societies that differ in economic, sociodemographic, political, and cultural backgrounds. We also show that trust and power foster compliance through different channels: trusted authorities (those perceived as benevolent and enhancing the common good) register the highest voluntary compliance, while powerful authorities (those perceived as effectively controlling evasion) register the highest enforced compliance. In contrast to some previous studies, the results suggest that trust and power are not fully complementary, as indicated by a negative interaction effect. Despite some between-country variations, trust and power are identified as important determinants of tax compliance across all nations. These findings have clear implications for authorities across the globe that need to choose best practices for tax collection., ACCEPTED, peer-reviewed

- Abstract
In a now-classic study by Srull and Wyer (1979), people who were exposed to phrases with hostile content subsequently judged a man as being more hostile. And this “hostile priming effect” has had a significant influence on the field of social cognition over the subsequent decades. However, a recent multi-lab collaborative study (McCarthy et al., 2018) that closely followed the methods described by Srull and Wyer (1979) found a hostile priming effect that was nearly zero, which casts doubt on whether these methods reliably produce an effect. To address some limitations with McCarthy et al. (2018), the current multi-site collaborative study included data collected from 29 labs. Each lab conducted a close replication (total N = 2,123) and a conceptual replication (total N = 2,579) of Srull and Wyer's methods. The hostile priming effect for both the close replication (d = 0.09, 95% CI [-0.04, 0.22], z = 1.34, p =.16) and the conceptual replication (d = 0.05, 95% CI [-0.04, 0.15], z = 1.15, p =.58) were not significantly different from zero and, if the true effects are non-zero, were smaller than what most labs could feasibly and routinely detect. Despite our best efforts to produce favorable conditions for the effect to emerge, we did not detect a hostile priming effect. We suggest that researchers should not invest more resources into trying to detect a hostile priming effect using methods like those described in Srull and Wyer (1979)., NA

- Abstract
Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution. - Abstract
Preregistration has been lauded as one of the solutions to the so-called ‘crisis of confidence’ in the social sciences and has therefore gained popularity in recent years. However, the current guidelines for preregistration have been developed primarily for studies where new data will be collected. Yet, preregistering secondary data analyses--- where new analyses are proposed for existing data---is just as important, given that researchers’ hypotheses and analyses may be biased by their prior knowledge of the data. The need for proper guidance in this area is especially desirable now that data is increasingly shared publicly. In this tutorial, we present a template specifically designed for the preregistration of secondary data analyses and provide comments and a worked example that may help with using the template effectively. Through this illustration, we show that completing such a template is feasible, helps limit researcher degrees of freedom, and may make researchers more deliberate in their data selection and analysis efforts.
