The recent global demand for video streaming applications has paved the way for peer-to-peer streaming system (P2PSS). Strategic scheduling scheme and dynamic overlay topology are essential to maintain quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) in P2PSS. The concept of P2PSS was tailored towards relying on active peers’ bandwidth to achieve cheap and scalable means of distribution over the Internet, such that peers with highest bandwidth serve as backbones for others. However, selecting backbone peers in low-capacity network environment is challenging due to insufficient bandwidth and poor infrastructure, thereby resulting in poor QoS and unpleasant user’s QoE. In this paper, we conducted a survey on users’ experiences with live video in selected locations in Nigeria. We designed an adaptive P2P streaming protocol and performed a packet-level simulation in Network Simulator 3(NS-3). Diverse simulation scenarios were set up to evaluate the proposed streaming protocol. Trace files data were analysed to measure end-to-end delay, start-up delay, and throughput. Furthermore, the proposed streaming protocol was benchmarked against selected existing schemes. The evaluation results revealed a 7.4% and 28% reduction in start-up and in end-to-end delays and 9% increase in throughput.

Peer-assisted networks have recently emerged as an excellent tool for distributing video contents across the Internet. High peers’ participation and cooperation in peer-assisted networks can drastically reduce the bandwidth cost, increased scalability and ease of deployment. However, the main factor which limits effective distribution of resources in this network is free riding; a situation in which a peer consumes resources freely but refuses to service other peers. This paper presents a new peer-assisted streaming model (AyoPeer) using game theoretics with the aim of minimizing free riding.The interactions between peers are fashioned after a famous Yoruba game called “Ayo”. AyoPeer provides a reward and punishment mechanism that ensures the free-riders fail and cooperating peers succeeds with download. The experimental results revealed that AyoPeer mechanism outperform the existing scheme by ensuring fair distribution of resources, high cooperation among peers and resistance to free-riding peers.

The dissemination of video applications across the Internet still remains the driving force for Internet traffic growth. Generally, video streaming systems are characterized with irregular transmitting pattern and fluctuation which usually leads to transmission delay and frame loss. Furthermore, the democratic platform created by peer-to-peer (P2P) network for video streaming suggests complex dynamical behaviour with difficult predictable performance. The existence of flash crowd and peer churn situations in P2P streaming systems obtained from random arrival and departure of peers exhibits chaotic attributes. In this paper, a P2P streaming system(UStream) was modelled using a system of first order differential equations. The dynamics of UStream were analysed using equilibrium points and eigenvalues structure. Instability region was tracked through numerical investigation. The numerical simulation conducted using the Mathematica package software showed that UStream exhibits spiral fixed point and strange attractors with certain initial conditions which confirms experimental measurement and observations. Also, the system responds exponentially with time and reflects instability pattern for the first 20 seconds and 500 seconds when investigated with client-to-server(CS)and P2P network models respectively.

The last decade has seen a sharp increase in Internet traffic due to dispersion of videos. Despite this growth, user's quality of experience (QoE) in peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming systems does not match the conventional television service. The deployment of P2P streaming system is affected by long delay, unplanned interruption, flash crowd, high churn situation and choice of overlay structure. The overlay structure plays significant role in ensuring that traffic are distributed to all physical links in a dynamic and fair manner, tree-based (TB) and mesh-based (MB) are the most popular. TB fails in situations where there is failure at the parent peer which can lead to total collapse of the system while MB is more vulnerable to flash crowd and high churn situation due to its unstructured pattern. This paper presents a novel P2P streaming topology (UStream), using a hybrid of TB and MB to address the disadvantages of both topologies to ensure an optimal solution. Furthermore, UStream adopts the features of ultra-metric tree to ensure that the time taken from the root peer to any of the children's peer are equal and the spanning tree to monitor all the peers at any point in time. Ustream also employs the principle of chaos theory. The present peer determines the future, though the approximate present does not approximately determines the future. Ustream was formalized using mathematical theories. Several theorems were proposed and proved in validating this topology.
