Objective: To assess the validity of a locally adapted Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) in the measurement of household food insecurity (FI) in the city of Tehran.Design: A cross-sectional study.Setting: Urban households were selected through a systematic cluster sampling method from six different districts of Tehran. The socio-economic status of households was evaluated using a questionnaire by means of interviews. An adapted HFIAS was used to measure FI. Content validity was assessed by an expert panel, and the questionnaire was then tested among ten households for clarity. Criterion validity was assessed by comparing the measure with a number of determinants and consequences of FI. Internal consistency was evaluated by Cronbach's α and exploratory factor analysis. For repeatability, the questionnaire was administered twice to twenty-five households at an interval of 20 d and Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated.Subjects: A total of 416 households.Results: In all, 11·8 %, 14·4 % and 17·5 % of the households were severely, moderately and mildly food insecure, respectively. Cronbach's α was 0·855. A significant correlation was observed between the two administrations of the questionnaire (r = 0·895, P < 0·001). Factor analysis of HFIAS items revealed two factors: the first five items as factor 1 (mild-to-moderate FI) and the last four as factor 2 (severe FI). Heads of food-secure households had higher education and higher job position compared with heads of food-insecure households (P < 0·001). Income and expenditure were lower in food-insecure households compared with food-secure households.Conclusions: Adapted HFIAS showed acceptable levels of internal consistency, criterion validity and reliability in assessing household FI among Tehranians. Objective: To assess the validity of the adapted Radimer/Cornell questionnaire to measure food insecurity in low-income urban households in Tehran, the capital of Iran.Design: The Radimer/Cornell questionnaire was modified and used to assess the applicability, validity and reliability of such a measure in a culturally different context of urban households in Tehran. Factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha were used to assess validity and reliability, respectively. Socio-economic characteristics and food consumption frequency of the household were used to assess the criterion validity of the questionnaire.Setting: District 20 of Tehran.Subjects: A sample of 250 Iranian nuclear households with at least one child aged 1-18 years and a non-pregnant, non-lactating woman of reproductive age, selected through a multistage random sampling method.Results: Three scales, labelled as household, individual and child hunger, were extracted through factor analysis using varimax rotation. Internal consistency of the scales was 0.897, 0.820 and 0.796, respectively. Individual insecurity and child hunger were inversely correlated with monthly per capita income, father's education, mother's education and father's occupational status, and positively correlated with household size, as expected. However, household insecurity did not follow the same pattern. Consumption frequency of fruits, vegetables, dairy, red meat and rice declined as food insecurity status worsened, while bread and potato consumption increased.Conclusion: The results show that a modified version of the Radimer/Cornell questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument to measure household food insecurity in a culturally different context. However, further modifications seem necessary to measure food insecurity at household level. Background: Implementation of food taxes may promote sustainable diets in a society. This study estimates the potential short-term impacts of taxes on sugar and sweets (SAS), sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) and hydrogenated oil and animal fats (HOAF) in Iran through a social cost-effectiveness analysis., Methods: In this study, three tax scenarios were evaluated, including a 25% tax on SASs, a 30% tax on SSBs, and a 30% tax on HOAFs. The data from Iran's 2019-2020 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) were utilized, and a simulated population of 1 million individuals aged over 25 years was analyzed. Population impact fraction (PIF) was calculated to estimate the averted number of cases and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) under each policy scenario. Additionally, the study assessed water and carbon footprints, as well as all associated costs. Cost-effectiveness was evaluated through incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICER) and comparison with WHO-recommended thresholds., Results: Implementation of taxes on SASs and HOAFs resulted in reductions of 1.09 and 1.08% in water footprint, as well as 0.47 and 1.05% in carbon footprint, respectively. In terms of population health, the interventions resulted in averting 343.92 DALYs (95% UI = 318.62-369.36) for the SSB tax and 1219.01 DALYs (95% UI = 1123.05-1315.77) for the tax on HOAFs. Additionally, the tax on SASs averted 1028.09 DALYs (95% UI = 947.16-1,109). All scenarios were deemed cost-effective based on the WHO threshold for ICER, with values of 0.26 billion Rials/DALY, 0.54 billion Rials/DALY, and 0.17 billion Rials/DALY, respectively., Conclusion: The studied tax scenarios could generate substantial health gains and be cost-effective in Iran. CD8+ T cells destroy insulin-producing pancreatic β cells in type 1 diabetes through HLA class I-restricted presentation of self-antigens. Combinatorial peptide library screening was used to produce a preferred peptide recognition landscape for a patient-derived T cell receptor (TCR) that recognized the preproinsulin-derived (PPI-derived) peptide sequence LWMRLLPLL in the context of disease risk allele HLA A*24:02. Data were used to generate a strong superagonist peptide, enabling production of an autoimmune HLA A*24:02-peptide-TCR structure by crystal seeding. TCR binding to the PPI epitope was strongly focused on peptide residues Arg4 and Leu5, with more flexibility at other positions, allowing the TCR to strongly engage many peptides derived from pathogenic bacteria. We confirmed an epitope from Klebsiella that was recognized by PPI-reactive T cells from 3 of 3 HLA A*24:02+ patients. Remarkably, the same epitope selected T cells from 7 of 8 HLA A*24+ healthy donors that cross-reacted with PPI, leading to recognition and killing of HLA A*24:02+ cells expressing PPI. These data provide a mechanism by which molecular mimicry between pathogen and self-antigens could have resulted in the breaking of self-tolerance to initiate disease.

Background: Dietary diversity refers to the consumption of a variety of foods or food groups over a given reference period, which is crucial for improving nutrition and overall health. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the association between dietary diversity and anthropometric indices in community-dwelling older adults living in Tehran in 2017 and 2021., Methods: The current study was conducted on 368 older adults [204 (55.4%) women and 164 (44.6%) men] over 60 years of age living in Tehran, who were selected by a systematic cluster sampling method at two-time points, 2017 and 2021. Anthropometric measures (weight, height, hip circumference, and waist circumference) were assessed with standard methods. The participants' dietary intake was assessed by completing two non-consecutive 24-hour recalls, and dietary diversity score (DDS) was calculated based on Kant's method. Statistical analysis was performed using R software by the mixed effect model method., Results: The mean DDS of the participants in 2017 (5.07 ± 1.20) was higher than that in 2021 (4.94 ± 1.09) (p < 0.05). DDS and dairy diversity score decreased significantly over time. After adjusting for confounders, there was an inverse relationship between the DDS and Body Mass Index (BMI) (B = -0.22; SE = 0.09), but the interaction effect of year × DDS (B = 0.19; SE = 0.10) was not significant (p = 0.06). However, there was a positive relationship between the DDS and A Body Shape Index (ABSI) (B = 0.00; p = 0.022), after adjusting for confounders, this relationship was no longer significant. Additionally, the interaction effect of year and DDS on the ABSI was not significant., Conclusion: The dietary intake and dietary diversity of older adult residents of Tehran declined dramatically with age, and a higher DDS was associated with improved anthropometric indices. DDS had an inverse relationship with general obesity in the studied participants, and the passage of time did not affect this relationship. The DDS can be used as a predictive index and is a powerful tool for investigating changes in nutritional status in longitudinal studies of old age. High-entropy alloys (HEAs), characterized as compositionally complex solid solutions with five or more metal elements, have emerged as a novel class of catalytic materials with unique attributes. Because of the remarkable diversity of multielement sites or site ensembles stabilized by configurational entropy, human exploration of the multidimensional design space of HEAs presents a formidable challenge, necessitating an efficient, computational and data-driven strategy over traditional trial-and-error experimentation or physics-based modeling. Leveraging deep learning interatomic potentials for large-scale molecular simulations and pretrained machine learning models of surface reactivity, our approach effectively rationalizes the enhanced activity of a previously synthesized PdCuPtNiCo HEA nanoparticle system for electrochemical oxygen reduction, as corroborated by experimental observations. Introduction: Milk and dairy products provide essential nutrients and have the potential to prevent chronic diseases, thus reducing healthcare costs. However, there is a lack of consistent and updated data on dairy consumption trends in Iran. This study aims to analyze the trends in dairy consumption among Iranian households from 1991 to 2021, focusing on household-level determinants across different expense groups., Methods: The study uses data from the Iranian Household Expenditure and Income Survey conducted annually from 1991 to 2021 to analyze households' dairy consumption. The data includes values and expenses of food and non-food items purchased in the previous month, as well as demographic characteristics of household members. The households were categorized into 10 deciles based on their gross expense. The econometric model used weighted mean per capita milk, yogurt, cheese, and total dairy consumption based on milk equivalent for each decile. The model takes into account changes in income, prices, household composition, education level, occupation, and residency area using panel data. Data preparation and model estimation were performed using RStudio and STATA17 software., Results: Based on the findings, in 1991, per capita milk, yogurt, and cheese consumption were 26.77 kg, 16.63 kg, and 2.42 kg, respectively. By 2021, these figures changed to 22.68 kg, 11.06 kg, and 3.79 kg, reflecting a decrease in milk and yogurt consumption but an increase in cheese consumption. Family size was positively correlated with yogurt consumption and head of the household spouse's job score were positively correlated with milk, yogurt and cheese consumption. Also, the presence of under five-year-old children and older adults members (over the age of 60) in the household was inversely related with yogurt and cheese consumption. Female-headed households tended to purchase more cheese, while their milk purchase level was significantly lower. Residing in urban areas was negatively related to milk, while cheese and total dairy consumption was higher in urban areas., Discussion: The findings highlight the importance of targeted dairy subsidy interventions and educational programs to improve dairy consumption in Iranian households, especially among vulnerable groups. Background: Food security is a function of food access and dietary diversity. Older age is a period when adequate and diverse dietary intake is a challenge. This study aimed to investigate the association between food security on the one hand and dietary diversity and socioeconomic factors on the other hand among the free-living older people in the city of Tehran., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 583 older people, aged 60-80 years living in Tehran city, were selected through the systematic cluster sampling method. Food security was determined by the United States Household Food Security Survey Module (US-HFSSM (.Socioeconomic status (SES) and two 24-h recalls were obtained. Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) was calculated using the FAO 2010 guideline. Multinomial logistic regression was applied., Results: The average age of participants was 67.87 ± 5.86 years. Based on US-HFSSM, 56.9% of older people were food secure; while 25.7%, 14.2% and 3.2% suffered from food insecurity (FI) without hunger, with moderate hunger, and with severe hunger, respectively. There was no association between FI and DDS, even after controlling for confounders. FI with mild hunger was associated with household income (OR = 2.744, 95% CI = 1.100-6.846), while FI with severe hunger was associated with Fars ethnicity (OR = 0.146, 95% CI = 0.051-0.424)., Conclusions: Overall, socio-economic status and demographic characteristics were the predictors of FI among older people. Aminophospholipids (aPL) such as phosphatidylserine are essential for supporting the activity of coagulation factors, circulating platelets, and blood cells. Phosphatidylthreonine (PT) is an aminophospholipid previously reported in eukaryotic parasites and animal cell cultures, but not yet in human tissues. Here, we evaluated whether PT is present in blood cells and characterized its ability to support coagulation. Several PT molecular species were detected in human blood, washed platelets, extracellular vesicles, and isolated leukocytes from healthy volunteers using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The ability of PT to support coagulation was demonstrated in vitro using biochemical and biophysical assays. In liposomes, PT supported prothrombinase activity in the presence and absence of phosphatidylserine. PT nanodiscs strongly bound FVa and lactadherin (nM affinity) but poorly bound prothrombin and FX, suggesting that PT supports prothrombinase through recruitment of FVa. PT liposomes bearing tissue factor poorly generated thrombin in platelet poor plasma, indicating that PT poorly supports extrinsic tenase activity. On platelet activation, PT is externalized and partially metabolized. Last, PT was significantly higher in platelets and extracellular vesicle from patients with coronary artery disease than in healthy controls. In summary, PT is present in human blood, binds FVa and lactadherin, supports coagulation in vitro through FVa binding, and is elevated in atherosclerotic vascular disease. To determine multifaceted determinants of household vulnerability to food insecurity in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban takeover, we randomly selected 555 households from 13 provinces, conducted in-person surveys, and applied the Household Food Insecurity Assess Scale (HFIAS) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). We collected data from January to April 2022. We observed an increase in both prevalence and severity of food insecurity among Afghan households after the Taliban takeover. Approximately, 98% and 70% of interviewed households were food insecure after and before the Taliban takeover, respectively. Similarly, households were more likely to be severely food insecure (81%) than before (40%). Our results showed that policy and political conditions contributed substantially to the food insecurity of Afghan households after the Taliban takeover. We recommend that the Taliban forces facilitate the presence of humanitarian organizations and NGOs to improve low-income households' food security, especially for women and children. Fungicides and nitrogen (N) fertilizers are essential to maintain plant yield in current intensive agriculture. Percarbamide is a novel type of N fertilizer with strong oxidizing property, and the nitrification inhibitor is widely used in agricultural production. It may be feasible to apply percarbamide and nitrification inhibitor as N management to promote fungicide dissipations in soil-plant system. This study quantified the effects of percarbamide and nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) and 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) on carbendazim residues, and microbial communities of soil-plant systems, and relationships among carbendazim residues, soil and endophytic microbial communities and plant yields were also comprehensively quantified. Compared with the control, the percarbamide significantly reduced soil carbendazim residues by 29.4% but enhanced the lettuce yield by 28.0%. Soil carbendazim residues were significantly and negatively correlated with the soil total N and NO 3 -N contents. Soil microbial community structures and co-occurrence networks were more sensitive to N management than their endophytic counterparts. In comparison to the percarbamide alone, the DCD significantly increased the nodes of soil fungal community co-occurrence network which were positively correlated with the plant yield. The DCD outweighed DMPP in increasing the lettuce yield and soil fungal community stability and reshaping soil bacterial community structure. Our study suggested that soil microbial communities were more sensitive to percarbamide and nitrification inhibitor applications than their endophytic counterparts under fungicide pressure and that the DCD outweighed DMPP in reshaping microbial communities. The integrated applications of percarbamide and nitrification inhibitors were promising soil N management strategies to promote fungicide removal and stimulate microbial community in the soil-plant systems.- -N contents. The overreaching objective of the current study is to investigate the association of quality of life with Afghan households' food insecurity. The data was collected immediately after the Taliban took control of a large part of Afghanistan. About a total of 555 households' heads participated in a face-to-face interview, using the HFIAS and WHOQOL-100 questionnaires along with some questions related to their socioeconomic characteristics at two different times, before and after the Taliban's takeover. The comparative analysis showed that 98% of Afghan households were food insecure after the Taliban takeover, while 70% of them faced food insecurity before the Taliban's takeover. The quality of life in the Taliban era is worse than before the Taliban. All dimensions of quality of life have decreased, and this decrease was more pronounced for the psychological, environmental, and physical domains. It is recommended that international organizations, NGOs, and local agents focus on these dimensions of the quality of life to improve food security., (© 2023. Soil ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission decrease nitrogen (N) utilization efficiency and cause some environmental problems. The N-cycling inhibitors are suggested to apply to enhance N utilization efficiency. Quantifying effects of N-cycling inhibitors on yield-scaled NH 3 volatilization and N 2 O emission and functional genes could provide support for the optimal selection and application of N-cycling inhibitor. We conducted a meta-analysis to reveal the effects of N-cycling inhibitors on soil abiotic properties, functional genes and yield-scaled NH 3 volatilization and N 2 O emission by extracting data from 166 published articles and linked their comprehensive relationships. The N-cycling inhibitors in this meta-analysis mainly includes nitrification inhibitors 3, 4-dimethyl pyrazole phosphate, dicyandiamide and 2-chloro-6-trichloromethylpyridine, urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide and biological nitrification inhibitors methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and 1, 9-decanediol. The N-cycling inhibitor applications significantly increased alkaline soil pH but significantly decreased acidic soil pH. The N-cycling inhibitors decreased soil AOB amoA gene abundances mostly under the condition of pH 4.5-6 (mean: 212%, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 249% and -176%) and significantly decreased nirS gene (mean: 39%; 95% CI: 72% and -6%). The yield-scaled NH 3 volatilization was significantly decreased by the N-cycling inhibitors under the condition of soil pH = 7-8.5 (mean: 45%; 95% CI: 59% and -31%). The yield-scaled N 2 O emission was also significantly reduced by all N-cycling inhibitors and had negative correlations with the soil nirK and nirS gene abundances. The effects of N-cycling inhibitors on soil pH, ammonium-N, nitrate-N and nitrifying and denitrifying genes and yield-scaled NH 3 volatilization and N 2 O emission were dominated by the inhibitor types, soil textures, crop species and environmental pH. This study systematically reviewed the evidence on interventions seeking to improve Food and Nutrition Literacy (FNLIT) functional, interactive and critical skills in primary school-aged children. Electronic databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Cochrane, Pro-Quest and Google Scholar were systematically searched. Randomised and non-randomised controlled trials, pre-/post-test and case-control designs were included. The primary outcomes were three levels of FNLIT: functional, interactive and critical. All citations, full-text articles and abstract data were screened by two independent reviewers. Any conflicts were then resolved through discussion. The quality of the included studies was individually evaluated using the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) quality assessment tool. Two reviewers extracted data from the included studies, and a descriptive analysis was performed. The quality of all eligible studies ( n 19) was rated as moderate/weak. A wide variety of skill-building activities were introduced by programmes, including recipe skills/food preparation, food label literacy, food tasting, gardening harvesting, and supporting cultural practices and ethnic foods. Only four studies measured food literacy (FL) (food label literacy) via a valid measure. Most interventions focused on the functional level of FL, except for two programmes (one scored weak and one scored moderate). In most of the studies, delivery of intervention content was facilitated by teachers ( n 15). Promising interventions were tailored to the needs and interests of students, incorporated into the existing curriculum and facilitated by teachers. The successful intervention strategies led to improvements in functional, partly interactive and critical skills. Future interventions should focus, holistically, on all aspects of FNLIT, especially interactive and critical skills.
