In the case of plant parasites, most studies have focused on describing qualitative interactions and a variety of genetic and evolutionary models has been proposed in this context. Although plant quantitative resistance benefits from advantages in terms of durability, we presently lack models that account for quantitative interactions between plants and their parasites and the evolution of these interactions. Nestedness and modularity are important features to unravel the overall structure of host-parasite interaction matrices. Here, we analysed these two features on 32 matrices of quantitative pathogenicity trait data gathered from 15 plant-parasite pathosystems consisting of either annual or perennial plants along with fungi or oomycetes, bacteria, nematodes, insects and viruses. The performance of several nestedness and modularity algorithms was evaluated through a simulation approach, which helped interpretation of the results. We observed significant modularity in only six of the 32 matrices, with two or three modules detected. For three of these matrices, modules could be related to resistance quantitative trait loci present in the host. In contrast, we found high and significant nestedness in 30 of the 32 matrices. Nestedness was linked to other properties of plant-parasite interactions. First, pathogenicity trait values were explained in majority by a parasite strain effect and a plant accession effect, with no or minor parasite-plant interaction term. Second, correlations between the efficiency and scope of the resistance of plant genotypes, and between the host range breadth and pathogenicity level of parasite strains were overall positive. This latter result questions the efficiency of strategies based on the deployment of several genetically-differentiated cultivars of a given crop species in the case of quantitative plant immunity.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenicity of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is highly influenced by genetic alterations, such as chromosomal abnormalities. Additionally, aberrations in the mechanisms involved in gene expression have been identified to have a role in the development of AML. Contradictory evidence has been reported concerning the expression of the CEBPA gene in AML patients. Additionally, investigation into the expression of the CEBPA-AS gene has yet to be explored in AML patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the expression of the CEBPA and CEBPA-AS genes and AML in Iranian patients. METHODS: Using quantitative real-time PCR, the expression of the CEBPA and CEBPA-AS genes was examined in the peripheral blood samples of 58 patients with de novo adult AML, and in 20 healthy controls. RESULTS: Overall, CEBPA expression analysis showed a significant up-regulation in AML patients compared with healthy controls. Interestingly, a significant up-regulation of CEBPA was detected in the male AML patients. Significant CEBPA over-expression was observed in M0 (p-value=0.0001), M3 (p-value= 0.012) and M4 (p-value= 0.000) FAB subtypes. Our data has also demonstrated that CEBPA expression is up-regulated in favorable (p-value= 0.006) and adverse (p-value= 0.042) cytogenetic risk groups. In addition, the expression of CEBPA was significantly increased in AML patients with an abnormal karyotype. Ectopic expression of CEBPA-AS was detected in seven of the AML patients. CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence for the up-regulation of CEBPA and the ectopic expression of CEBPA-AS in AML patients, suggesting that these two genes may play an important role in the pathogenesis of AML. The role of CEBPA and CEBPA-AS in AML patients should be further explored. This will offer potential opportunities for the development of novel treatment strategies.

Severe burn injuries can lead to delays in healing and devastating scar formation. Attempts have been made to develop a suitable skin substitute for the scarless healing of such skin wounds. Currently, there is no effective strategy for completely scarless healing after the thermal injuries. In our recent work, we fabricated and evaluated a 3D protein-based artificial skin made from decellularized human amniotic membrane (AM) and electrospun nanofibrous silk fibroin (ESF) in vitro. We also characterized both biophysical and cell culture investigation to establish in vitro performance of the developed bilayer scaffolds. In this report, we evaluate the appropriate utility of this fabricated bilayered artificial skin in vivo with particular emphasis on healing and scar formation due to the biochemical and biomechanical complexity of the skin. For this work, AM and AM/ESF membranes alone or seeded with adipose-tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs) are implanted on full-thickness burn wounds in mice. The healing efficacy and scar formation are evaluated at 7, 14, and 28 days post-implantation in vivo. Our data reveal that ESF accelerates the wound-healing process through the early recruitment of inflammatory cells such as macrophages into the defective site as well as the up-regulation of angiogenic factors from the AT-MSCs and the facilitation of the remodeling phase. In vivo application of the prepared AM/ESF membrane seeded with the AT-MSCs reduces significantly the post-burn scars. The in vivo data suggest that the potential applications of the AM/ESF bilayered artificial skin may be considered a clinical translational product with stem cells to guide the scarless healing of severe burn injuries., We express our appreciation to Prof. Bahram Kazemi and Dr. Nariman Mosaffa for their constructive comments on this manuscript. Background: Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are members of the intracellular li- pid binding protein (iLBPs) family and most of them show tissue specific expression. FABP9/PERF15 (Perforatorial15) is the male germ cell-specific fatty acid-binding pro- tein. It was first identified as the major constituent of the murine sperm perforatorium and perinuclear theca. To date, investigations in mice have demonstrated that this protein has a role in the male reproductive system, especially in spermatogenesis. Also, it has been reported that FABP9 can protect sperm fatty acids from oxidative damage. Recently it was shown that it can affect sperm morphology in mice. Based on these findings, we designed a study to evaluate if mutations of this gene can affect sperm morphology in humans. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, DNA was extracted from peripheral blood of 100 infertile males with normal sperm count but with a number of morphologi- cally abnormal sperms in their semen that was above normal. Four exons and one intron of the FABP9 gene were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), re-sequenced and then analyzed for mutation detection. Results: We did not detect any mutation in any area of the four exons, intron 3 and splice sites of FABP9 gene in any of the studied 100 samples. Conclusion: There was no mutation in the exonic regions and the poor sperm mor- phology. However, we didn’t analyze the promoter, intron 1 and 2 to establish conclusions regarding the association of these genic regions and sperm dysmor- phology.

The abundance and biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates were studied in the place of fish cage culture in southern coasts of Caspian sea (Mazandaran waters- kelarabad). The goal of this study was to consider of fish cage culture effects on the abundance and biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates. The sampling was carried out in 3 stations in depth of 20 meter of Kelarabad waters monthly. In this study 7 species were identified belonged to 5 genus of 4 family. Totally 23442 sample of benthic invertebrates were counted that the lowest and highest abundance were in station 1(23.4%) and station 2(46.8%) respectively. The results of stations study showed that the highest abundance and biomass were in stations 2 and 3 with the average of 646 ± 1230.4 n/m2 and 0.526 ± 1.001 gr/m2 respectively. This coulld be respectively dependant to not settling of cage (witness station) and appearance of Cerastoderma glaucum because of its large body in station 1. The difference of abundance and biomass between different stations was not significant (p ›0.05). The study on abundance and biomass in different seasons showed that the highest abundance in autumn with the avarage of 888.13 ± 1371.58 n/m2 belonged to Strblospio gynobranchiata and the highest biomass belonged to C. glaucum which was because of appearance of not native species of polychaeta and also the species with shell covering from bivalvia. The results showed that the specie of S. gynobranchiata from polychaeta including 93.3% of abundance was the dominant specie that could be related to appropriate ecological conditions for living and high adaptability.It was concluded that the abundance and biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates in station 1 was lower than other stations which was related to fish cage culture activity and its effects on benthic macroinvertebrates. So it is suggested that each mariculture activity in southern coasts of Caspian sea should be carried out with regarding to environmental considerations and performance of comparative evaluation project of environmental effects. Background: Lateral osteotomy is a major part of rhinoplasty for remodeling external facet of the nose and narrowing of nasal base and dorsum after removal of the hump. There are two techniques for lateral osteotomy known as external and internal. Each of these provide advantages and impose limitations. The purpose of our study was to compare the severity of postoperative edema and ecchymosis between internal and external osteotomy techniques. Methods: This study was designed as a clinical trial on 30 cases. With randomization, one side of the nasal bone was selected for internal approach, and the other side, for external approach. Then, on the 1st and 7th days after surgery, the patients were scored for the severity of edema and ecchymosis. Results: On the first day after surgery, not only edema, but also ecchymosis was lower with the external osteotomy than with the internal approach (P = 0.037, P = 0.002, respectively). The severity of ecchymosis, on the 7th postoperative day, was lower with the external approach, and the difference was significant (P = 0.011). The severity of both edema and ecchymosis on the first postoperative day was evaluated higher in females, with statistically significant differences (P = 0.05 for edema and P = 0.003 for ecchymosis). The extension of ecchymosis on the 7th postoperative day was higher in women (P = 0.05). There were no significant differences between the two approaches in medialization of the involved bones and no apparent asymmetries either. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, external osteotomy seems to be the approach of choice, provided that the surgeon has enough experience in doing it.
