金沢大学大学院自然科学系研究科, We present a calibrated, high-resolution and 13C/12C record for a well-preserved Last Interglacial Porites sp. coral (U-Th age of 127 } 6 ka) from the sea-level high-stand terrace of Yonaguni Island, Japan. Seasonal variations in the ƒÂ18O and ƒÂ13C values for the fossil coral are greater than those observed in modern coral records from the same reef setting and appear to be driven by the enhanced insolation seasonality in the northern hemisphere during the Last Interglacial maximum. The 18O enrichment of 1.1ñ in the fossil coral compared to the modern analogue cannot be due entirely to a reduction in sea-surface temperature because corals in this region are already growing at their lower thermal limit. Instead, most of the 18O enrichment must be due to a change in the ƒÂ18O of the surface seawater, probably in response to enhanced evaporation of the ocean or a higher volume flux of the Kuroshio Current.

Twenty-one Pleistocene corals newly collected at fourteen localities on the island of Kikai were dated by the uranium-series 230Th/234U method. One of the most salient observations is that a part of the Pleistocene limestone on the island was dated to be Middle Pleistocene in age, which may be correlative with two stages of the high sea stand. The one is corresponding to the stage 7 of the marine oxygen isotopic record (Emiliani and Shackleton, 1974), approximately 200, 000 years B.P., and the other may be correlative to the stage 9 (or older one), 250, 000 years or more B.P. From the distribution of corals assigned to more than 250, 000 years and the lithology of limestone including those corals, the very shallow environment where hermatypic corals could grow up is inferred to have spread at that time over the area having a diameter of at least 6.5 km. Namely, the initial coral reef settled directly onto the Pliocene basement (Somachi Formation; Nakagawa, 1969) might be a fairly extensive table reef and the limestone deposited as such a reef is nowadays composed the basal part of Late Pleistocene limestone. The other new uranium-series dates also are shown in the present paper. We point out, based on these new 230Th/234U dates, that the geologic history itemized by Konishi et al. (1970) should be modified, although it is not necessarily required to change principally the articles concerning the history since the past 130, 000 years. 琉球列島喜界島に分布する更新統石灰岩(Hanzawa, 1935, のRiukiu Limestone)から, 新しく230Th/234U法によって放射年代を求めた。ここで報告する年代値は, ほとんどが, これまで放射年代が知られていない地点で採集した7属(Favia, Goniastrea, Porites, Montipora, Favites, Galaxea, Montastrea)・合計21個の礁性サンゴ化石から得たものである。その結果として, 喜界島の更新統の一部は, 更新世中期における2回の高海水準期に形成されたことが明らかになった。一つは, おおよそ20万年前のEmiliani and Shackleton (1974)のoxygen isotopic stage 7にあたり, 他の一つは, 25万年以上前のstage9(あるいは, より以前の温暖期)に相当する。後者の年代値は, 島の各所で採集した試料から得られたが, それら採集地点の広がりとそれらサンゴ化石を含む石灰岩の岩相などから, 当時, 礁性サンゴの生育が可能な極浅海環境が, 一つの直径が少なくとも6.5kmある範囲に広がっていたと思われる。すなわち, 基盤(上部鮮新統早町層;中川, 1969)上に, はじめて形成されたサンゴ礁は, かなりの広がりをもった卓礁であった可能性もあり, 当時の礁を形成していた石灰岩は, 現在, Konishi et al.(1974)ほかの琉球石灰岩古・中および新期部層の基底部を構成していると考えられる。今回新たに得られた230Th/234Uサンゴ年代から, 以前Konishi et al.(1970)によって箇条書きにして述べられた本島の地史を, 過去13万年間の部分は基本的に変更の必要はないものの, 一部修正しなければならないことを指摘する。

Uranium-series dating of some hermatypic corals (Acropora sp.) reveals that the uppermost part of the Pleistocene series occurred on Tokuno-shima (Central Ryukyus) is likely to be Middle Pleistocene in age, at least older than 300, 000 years. Although the coral ages obtained are almost near or beyond the limitation of the 230Th/234U method of dating, the upper limit of the age is estimated from the mean 234U/238U activity ratio to be approximately 700, 000 years. This result is suggestive that reefy sediments formed during the last interglacial stage, 120, 000 eyars ago when sea level stood about 6m higher than the present, is exposed nowhere on the island. In addition, the absence of the Holocene Raised Coral Reef Limestone (Hanzawa, 1935) on the island may also imply that the vicinity of Tokuno-shima has been locally subsided since the last 120, 000 years. 南西諸島徳之島に分布する更新統最上部とされている亀津層(中川, 1967)から採集したサンゴ(Acropora sp.)化石について, 230Th年代を求めた。その結果, 230Th/234U放射年代測定法の適用限界か, あるいはそれを越える値(30万年以上)が得られた。また234U/238U放射能比に基づく234U年代は387, 000～709, 000年と推定された。すなわち, 亀津層の年代値は30万年以上, そしてその上限は約70万年と結論される。結局, 徳之島には喜界島などで見られる最終間氷期およびその後の数回の亜間氷期に形成された礁性堆積物(Konishi et al., 1974)や完新世の"隆起サンゴ礁石灰岩"(Hanzawa, 1935, のRaised Coral Reef Limestone)が現在陸上に露出していなく, このことは, 少なくとも過去12万年間は, 徳之島付近が沈降傾向にあることを示唆している。

^Th/234U ages averaging 82, 000±2, 000 years old were determined for three species of ahermatypic solitary corals (Trochocyathus hanzawai, Micrabacia japonica and Flabellum rubrum) from the Riukiu Limestone of grainstone facies in the northern area of Kamikatetsu, Kikai-jima, Ryukyu Islands. It is most likely that this type of limestone was deposited at the water depth of 120 m or less as a forereef sediment, in front of the reef which has been elevated up to 184 m in present altitude by the vertical tectonic movement and is now forming a marine terrace developing to the south of Gusuku. The surface of terrace including the dated grainstone is thought to be partly constructional and partly erosional. Because two types of limestone, coralline limestone and this grainstone formed separately during times of two interstadial high sea stands (approximately 60, 000 and 82, 000 years ago, respectively), are recognized in the terrace deposit distributed at the same altitude. 喜界島の更新統琉球石灰岩のうち, 上嘉鉄の北方約650m・高度40mの地点付近に分布するものは, その特徴的な岩相(典型的なDunham, 1962, のgrainstone)と, 保存のよい多くの種類の単体サンゴを産することなどで, 古くから注目されてきた。本研究では, それらの中から3種(Trochocyathus hanzawai, Micrabacia japonicaおよびFlabellum rubrum)を選んで, 230Th/234U法による放射年代測定を試み, 平均82, 000±2, 000年の年代値を得た。この値は, 世界各地(例えば, 西インド諸島Barbados島やニューギニアHuon半島など)で, その存在が確認されている一亜間氷期の年代と一致する。一方, 当時の礁石灰岩は, 現在城久南部に発達する海成段丘の構成物として, すでに確認されている(Konishi et al., 1974)。すなわち, 城久南部にみられる礁石灰岩がサンゴ礁として形成されていた当時, 上述のgrainstoneはその礁前縁相として堆積したものと考えられる。そして, このgrainstoneと礁石灰岩との現在の分布高度差(114～144m)は, もし両者がこれまでに等量の構造運動(垂直変動)をうけてきたとすれば, 大よそgrainstoneの堆積深度を示しているといえる。しかし, 島内で確認される断層から局地的な変動量の違いも考慮しなければならず, 実際の堆積深度は120m以浅と推定される。この推定値は, 単体サンゴおよび蘚虫類の研究からYabe and Eguchi (1932)やKataoka (1961)によって推定されたgrainstoneの堆積深度と決して矛盾しない。また, 以前Konishi et al. (1970, 1974)が報告した55, 000～65, 000年前のYounger Limestone Member of Riukiu Limestoneの礁性サンゴに富む石灰岩の分布地点が, このgrainstoneの分布地域と近接し, 形成時代と堆積深度が全く異なると思われる両者が段丘構成物としてみられることから, 上嘉鉄北方に広がる高度40mの平坦面は, 一部が堆積面一部が侵食面であると考えられる。
