Abstract

Continued advances in quantum technologies rely on producing nanometer-scale wires. Although several state-of-the-art nanolithographic technologies and bottom-up synthesis processes have been used to engineer such wires, critical challenges remain in growing uniform atomic-scale crystalline wires and constructing their network structures. Here we discover a simple method to fabricate atomic-scale wires with various arrangements, including stripes, X-, Y-junctions, and nanorings. Single-crystalline atomic-scale wires of a Mott insulator, whose band gap is comparable to those of wide-gap semiconductors, are spontaneously grown on graphite substrates \DEL{and epitaxial monolayer graphene on SiC }by pulsed-laser deposition. These wires are one-unit-cell-thick and have an exact width of two- and four-unit-cells (1.4 and 2.8\,nm) and lengths up to a few $\mu m$. We show that the non-equilibrium reaction-diffusion processes may play an essential role in atomic pattern formation. Our findings offer a new perspective on the non-equilibrium self-organization phenomena on an atomic scale, paving a unique way for the quantum architecture of nano-network.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider the predual spaces of weak Orlicz spaces. As an application, we provide the Fefferman-Stein vector-valued maximal inequality for the weak Orlicz spaces. In order to prove this statement, we introduced the Orlicz-Lorentz spaces, and showed the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on these spaces.

Abstract

Oligodendrogliomas are defined at the molecular level by the presence of an IDH mutation and codeletion of chromosomal arms 1p and 19q. In the past, case reports and small studies described gliomas with sarcomatous features arising from oligodendrogliomas, so called oligosarcomas. Here, we report a series of 24 IDH-mutant oligosarcomas from 23 patients forming a distinct methylation class. The tumors were recurrences from prior oligodendrogliomas or developed de novo. Precursor tumors of 12 oligosarcomas were histologically and molecularly indistinguishable from conventional oligodendrogliomas. Oligosarcoma tumor cells were embedded in a dense network of reticulin fibers, frequently showing p53 accumulation, positivity for SMA and CALD1, loss of OLIG2 and gain of H3K27 trimethylation (H3K27me3) as compared to primary lesions. In 5 oligosarcomas no 1p/19q codeletion was detectable, although it was present in the primary lesions. Copy number neutral LOH was determined as underlying mechanism. Oligosarcomas harbored an increased chromosomal copy number variation load with frequent CDKN2A/B deletions. Proteomic profiling demonstrated oligosarcomas to be highly distinct from conventional CNS WHO grade 3 oligodendrogliomas with consistent evidence for a smooth muscle differentiation. Expression of several tumor suppressors was reduced with NF1 being lost frequently. In contrast, oncogenic YAP1 was aberrantly overexpressed in oligosarcomas. Panel sequencing revealed mutations in NF1 and TP53 along with IDH1/2 and TERT promoter mutations. Survival of patients was significantly poorer for oligosarcomas as first recurrence than for grade 3 oligodendrogliomas as first recurrence. These results establish oligosarcomas as a distinct group of IDH-mutant gliomas differing from conventional oligodendrogliomas on the histologic, epigenetic, proteomic, molecular and clinical level. The diagnosis can be based on the combined presence of (a) sarcomatous histology, (b) IDH-mutation and (c) TERT promoter mutation and/or 1p/19q codeletion, or, in unresolved cases, on its characteristic DNA methylation profile.

14. Effects of Tongue-Strengthening Exercise on Tongue Strength and Effortful Swallowing Pressure in Young Healthy Adults: A Pilot Study

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of tongue-strengthening exercise (TSE) on tongue strength and effortful swallowing pressure in young healthy adults. Method: Thirteen young healthy volunteers (six men, seven women; M[subscript age] = 20.5 ± 0.5 years) performed 8 weeks of isometric TSE 3 days per week. A tongue pressure measurement device was used to measure maximum isometric tongue pressure (MITP) and conduct the TSE, and a tactile sensor system attached to the hard palate was used to measure effortful swallowing pressure. MITP and effortful swallowing pressure were measured at baseline, after 4 and 8 weeks of training, and at 4 and 8 weeks after the last training session to examine the detraining effects. Results: The results indicated that both MITP and effortful swallowing pressure increased significantly from baseline to 8 weeks after training. Although the improved MITP significantly decreased at 4 and 8 weeks after training cessation, no detraining effect was observed for effortful swallowing pressure. Conclusions: TSE is an effective method for increasing tongue pressure in wide tongue-palate contact areas during effortful swallow. The effortful swallowing pressure gained with TSE appears to be maintained for at least eight nontraining weeks.
