Herein, poor reproducibility of optical absorption edges in GeS2 glasses and films is seen. Reported spectral positions of the absorption edge in melt‐quenched glasses spread over ≈0.2 eV at ħω ≈ 3 eV. In deposited films, the edge red‐shifts to ħω ≈ 2.5 eV showing wider variations of ≈1 eV. Traditional interpolation algorithms often fail to meet the precision requirements of ultra-precision machining when applied to super-precision polishing machines. Moreover, the processing of fused silica glass optical components is frequently threatened by mechanical impacts due to their fragility. In order to address this issue, this paper proposes a high-precision motion interpolation method based on fourth-order Runge-Kutta and velocity-flexible planning. This method is designed for open-architecture small multi-axis optical polishing machines to polish quartz glass. The algorithm initially employs composite Simpson's rule to calculate the lengths of sub-paths within the polishing trajectory. Based on these length values, flexible velocity planning is executed to ensure the smooth continuity of velocity, acceleration, and jerk during motion interpolation. This reduces the risk of mechanical impacts that could damage the components during the machining process. The introduction of the adaptive fourth-order Runge-Kutta method significantly enhances the parameter point calculation accuracy of NURBS curves. The incorporation of adaptive principles also maintains a higher processing speed, thereby greatly improving processing efficiency. This method comprehensively addresses both the precision of curve interpolation and execution efficiency. Finally, experimental validation is conducted on an open-architecture small multi-axis optical polishing machine. Contactless hot embossing has been demonstrated to possess the potential for cost‐effective production and precise mounting concepts in fabricating glass microlenses and microlens arrays due to the reduced difficulty of mold fabrication and the possibility of obtaining self‐aligned assemblies. This study aims to provide experimental evidence for understanding the forming mechanism of glass microlenses and microlens arrays in the contactless hot embossing process. The effects of process parameters, diameter and position of the micro‐holes, hole diameter, and pitch of the micro‐hole array mold on the filling deformation of glass in contactless hot embossing were comprehensively investigated. It is found that placing the micro‐hole farther away from the mold center renders decrease in both filling height and tip curvature but increase in the eccentricity of the embossed glass microlens. As a result, the formed glass microlens array shows a nonuniform distribution of filling height and tip curvature. Furthermore, reducing the pitch of micro‐hole array mold can significantly improve the uniformity of formed microlens array. Based on these experimental results, the forming mechanism of microlenses and microlens arrays in contactless hot embossing process is summarized. This article reports the in-situ growth of spinel CoCr 2 O 4 nanocrystals (NC) in tellurite glass through tailoring the Co content by melt-quenching method. The microstructure, optical, and magnetic properties of NC/ glass systems were systematically studied using various techniques. Well-defined 30 nm crystallization of CoCr 2 O 4 (space group of Fd3m) homogeneously distributed in the glassy matrix and the concurrent formation of cubic BiCoO 3 (space group of P4mm) when the Co content exceeds 3%. The coexistence of multivalence and coordination states of Co and Cr significantly modified the glass structure with conversion of TeO 4 →TeO 3 , BO 4 →BO 3 , and CoO 4 →CoO 6 units. Exceptional performance of the glass containing 5% Co-tuned CoCr 2 O 4 was obtained, showcasing the decrease of E g (2.09 eV), strong ferro-magnetization of 7.04 emu/g, large α 3 (4.88×10−10 m/W) and good optical limiting property (threshhold of 1.31×1012 W/m2). Furthermore, the same glass showed excellent red emission between 650 and 800 nm under the excitation of 460 nm, with an increased lifetime (2.648 ms) and good stability of 90.7% within 25–300 °C. The emission mechanism was discussed. This paper proposes a method for an automatic detection of 3D-display-friendly scenes from video sequences. Manual selection of such scenes by a human user would be extremely time consuming and would require additional evaluation of the result on 3D display. The input videos can be intentionally captured or taken from other sources, such as films. First, the input video is analyzed and the camera trajectory is estimated. The optimal frame sequence that follows defined rules, based on optical attributes of the display, is then extracted. This ensures the best visual quality and viewing comfort. The following identification of a correct focusing distance is an important step to produce a sharp and artifact-free result on a 3D display. Two novel and equally efficient focus metrics for 3D displays are proposed and evaluated. Further scene enhancements are proposed to correct the unsuitably captured video. Multiple image analysis approaches used in the proposal are compared in terms of both quality and time performance. The proposal is experimentally evaluated on a state-of-the-art 3D display by Looking Glass Factory and is suitable even for other multi-view devices. The problem of optimal scene detection, which includes the input frames extraction, resampling, and focusing, was not addressed in any previous research. Separate stages of the proposal were compared with existing methods, but the results show that the proposed scheme is optimal and cannot be replaced by other state-of-the-art approaches. In this work, a series of K 2 O–MgO–B 2 O 3 –P 2 O 5 (KMBP) glasses were prepared by the melt-quenching method and the glass-ceramics were prepared by the one-step heat treatment. The thermal, structural, physical and optical properties, as well as the crystallization behaviour of the KMBP system, were investigated in detail using characterization techniques such as DSC, XRD, SEM, FTIR, transmittance spectroscopy and microhardness. As indicated by DSC, the thermostability and glass-forming ability were gradually enhanced through the partial substitution of K 2 O by MgO. XRD showed that the main crystalline phases of the glass-ceramics (GC) were gradually converted from the P –Mg–K–O based crystalline phases to the P –Mg–O based and the P –Al–O based crystalline phases. The SEM results indicated that tiny grain-like crystals were successfully precipitated from the parent glasses after heat treatment. The deconvoluted FTIR spectra results showed a gradual conversion of the [BO 3 ] and [PO 3 ] units towards the [BO 4 ] and [PO 4 ] units with the increase of the MgO contents. The increase in the degree of glass network polymerization was the essential reason for the increment in the microhardness of the parent glasses. The microhardness of GC featured a trend concordant with the crystallinity of the crystalline phases. The values of metallization criteria (M C) between 0.34 and 0.45, as well as the higher values of third-order nonlinear polarizability (χ (3)) and nonlinear refractive index (n nl) are indicative of the good suitability of the KMBP glasses for the nonlinear optical applications. The direct femtosecond laser writing of phase optical elements in glasses represents a promising technique for controlling light beams and developing new functional devices that operate on the birefringence effect. In this study, phase plates were written in the volume of silica and nanoporous glasses using a laser beam. For the first time, the chromatic dispersion curves of birefringence were measured for such plates using multiple methods. This allows the retardance of birefringent elements fabricated by direct laser writing to be estimated, even when using commercial birefringence analysis systems operating at a specific wavelength. This study focuses on the influence of low-concentration additions of NiCl2 on the overall properties of lead arseborate oxide glasses. In this regard, small amounts, in grams, of NiCl2 were added, separately, to the main constituents of the lead-arseboarte glass, according to the chemical formula [23 wt% B2O3–11 wt.% Na2O–20 wt. CaO–23 wt.% PbO–23 wt.% As2O3] % + x NiCl2, where x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 g, to prepare a glass series of four samples using the fast quenching technique. The structural and optical characterizations of the prepared samples have been described based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, Fourier transform infrared charts (FTIR), and UV–Vis spectra. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns did not contain any crystalline peaks but only two broad humps which revealed that all samples possess short-range order structures. At the same time, the FTIR charts showed different structural units. The UV–Vis spectra demonstrated that the absorption edge spectra changed to a higher wavelength with an increase in NiCl2 dopants, accompanied by a drop in optical transmittance, particularly in the visible range. As the NiCl2 dopants increased, the values of the optical energy gaps reduced while the mass attenuation remained constant, and the effective atomic number, bulk density, microhardness, absorption index, and characteristic relaxation time increased. Regardless of sample thickness, a novel methodology has been proposed to determine both the optical band gaps and the optical loss. The novel method and the widely used one (Tauc relation) demonstrated excellent agreement. The results suggest the NiCl2-rich sample is a primary material for radiation shielding applications as a carrier for radioactive sources and preserving them, or for preserving radioactive waste and high-reflection and UV-blocking glass coating. This study focuses on how the chemical makeup of the glass' basic components affects the glass' structure and optical characteristics. Four glass samples have been created for this purpose using the chemical formula; 94 mol% Na2B4O7—(6-x) mol% CeO2 – x mol% Ce(NO3)3, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 6. The Ce cations in this formula have two separate chemical sources, CeO2 and Ce(NO3)3, with CeO2 eventually being replaced by Ce(NO3)3. The standard melt-quenching technique was used to prepare the studied glasses. While X-ray direction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and UV–vis were used for the structural and optical characterizations. XRD patterns revealed the short-range order glass networks for the prepared samples, while DSC thermograms showed that when CeO2 was replaced with Ce(NO3)3, the glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased, causing the glass stability to improve. The optical characterization resulted in the finding that when CeO2 was replaced with Ce(NO3)3, the Urbach's energy increased with a decrease in bandgap energies, which reflects an increase in the glass homogeneity. Finally, the results may imply that Ce(NO3)3-based glasses can be proposed for usage in applications for UV blockers, radiation shielding, light attenuation, and n-type semiconductors. While sustainable material systems have become paramount, recycling unused waste cathode ray tubes (CRTs) glass can possess great potential for radiation protection applications. With this motivation, the present study addressed the utilization of waste CRTs in combination with MoO3 towards a glass composition of xMoO3—(100-x)CRTs where x typifies 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt%. The glass samples coded Mo0 to Mo5 were synthesized using a traditional melting technique. After successfully preparing the glass series, some sets of characterization analyses were performed to understand physical, structural, optical, and radiation shielding properties. According to the findings, density increased from 2.92 to 2.96 g/cm3 as MoO3 was introduced into the glass network. Yet more, all glass samples exhibited an amorphous structure irrespective of varying MoO3 doping rates. On the other hand, FTIR measurements paved the way for highlighting possible vibrational modes, such as Si–O-Si and Si–O, in the structure. According to the optical properties via UV–Vis, the direct Eg values equaled 1.75, 1.69, 1.65, and 1.61 eV for Mo0 to Mo5, respectively, whereas R values ranged from 2.8534 to 2.9281. For investigating mass attenuation coefficients (MAC), the transmission measurements were performed for 30.9–383 keV photon energy ranges using radioactive source of 133-Ba and Ultra-Ge detector. The correctness of the experimental MAC values were checked with EpiXS program and MCNP codes. It is determined that the highest MAC values changing from 0.5951 cm2/g to 0.1022 cm2/g belong to Mo5 glass for 30.9–383 keV. It is also revealed that with the increasing MoO3 addition, EABF, EBF, HVL and MFP values of the Mo0-Mo5 glasses dropped and MAC, Zeff and Nel values enhanced. This article presents a low-cost apparatus designed for teaching geometric optics experiments to first-year university students. The apparatus is made of medium-density fiberboard and uses glass optical elements to verify the laws of reflection and refraction. It allows for the direct observation of lateral displacement caused by a rectangular plate and the determination of the refractive index of the plate's material. Additionally, it enables investigation of refraction through a Littrow prism by determining its minimum deviation angle. The apparatus is economic, safe, and easy to use, making it suitable for educational purposes. Optical ultrasound (OpUS) imaging is an ultrasound modality that utilizes fiber-optic ultrasound sources and detectors to perform pulse-echo ultrasound imaging. These probes can be constructed entirely from glass optical fibers and plastic components, and as such, these devices have been predicted to be compatible with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), modalities that use intense electromagnetic fields for imaging. However, to date, this compatibility has not been demonstrated. In this work, a free-hand OpUS imaging system was developed specifically to investigate the compatibility of OpUS systems with CT and MRI imaging systems. The OpUS imaging platform discussed in this work was used to perform real-time OpUS imaging under (separately) concurrent CT and MRI. CT and MRI imaging of the OpUS probe was used to determine if the probe itself would induce artifacts in the CT and MRI imaging, and ultrasound resolution targets and background measurements were used to assess any impact of CT and MRI on the OpUS signal fidelity. These measurements demonstrate that there was negligible interaction between the OpUS system and both the CT and MRI systems, and to further demonstrate this capability, concurrent OpUS-CT and OpUS-MRI imaging was conducted of a tissue-mimicking phantom and a dynamic motion phantom. This work presents a comprehensive demonstration of an OpUS imaging system operating alongside CT and MRI, which opens up new applications of ultrasound imaging in electromagnetically challenging settings. Metal-organic network-forming glasses are an emerging type of material capable of combining the modular design and high porosity of metal-organic frameworks and the high processability and optical transparency of glasses. However, a generalizable strategy for achieving both high porosity and high glass-forming ability in modularly designed metal-organic networks has yet to be developed. Herein, we develop a series of aluminum alkoxide glasses and monoliths by linking aluminum-oxo clusters with alcohol linkers. A bulky monodentate alcohol modulator is introduced during synthesis and act as both network plasticizer and pore template, which can be removed by the subsequent solvent exchange to give gas accessible pores. Glasses synthesized with the modulator template exhibit well-defined glass transitions in their as-synthesized form and high surface areas up to 500 m2/g after activation, making them among the most porous glassy materials. The aluminum alkoxide glasses also have optical transparency and fluorescent properties, and their structures are elucidated by pair-distribution functions, spectroscopic and compositional analysis. These findings could significantly expand the library of microporous metal-organic network-forming glasses and enable their future applications. Transparent glass with photochromic and luminescent properties has recently garnered considerable interest in optical storage, while the photochromic transparent glass system is still limited. Herein, it is proposed that combining transparent glass matrix with photochromic nanocrystals is an efficient strategy to develop a broader range of photochromic luminescent glass systems. The Yb3+/Tb3+ co‐doped BaMgSiO4 glass ceramics are successfully prepared by a two‐step melt‐quenching approach followed by a thermal treatment in a reducing atmosphere. The glass ceramics exhibit high transparency and distinct coloration, showing a color change between colorless and pink by alternating irradiation between 365 nm ultraviolet light and 473 nm laser. The formation of color centers in the BaMgSiO4 nanoparticles drives the coloration of such glass ceramics. Based on their photochromic and photobleaching behavior, the efficient reversible upconversion luminescence modulation can be implemented with the maximum luminescence modulation rate of 79.83%. The excellent reproducibility and anti‐fatigue of such upconversion luminescence modulation demonstrate the promising application of Yb3+/Tb3+ co‐doped BaMgSiO4 glass ceramics as an optical storage medium. Analytical methods with wide field range and high spatial resolution are required to observe the distribution of the crystal structure in micro‐regions undergoing macroscopic chemical reactions. A recent X‐ray diffraction (XRD) imaging method combines XRD with an X‐ray optical device such as a glass polycapillary consisting of a bundle of numerous monocapillaries. The former provides the crystal structure, while the latter controls the shape of the incident or diffracted X‐rays and retains the positional information of the sample. Although reducing the monocapillary pore size should improve the spatial resolution, manufacturing technology challenges must be overcome. Here, an anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) film, which forms self‐ordered porous nanostructures by anodic oxidation in an electrolyte, is applied as an X‐ray optical device. The AAO film (pore diameter: 110 nm; size of the disc: 11 mm; and thickness: 620 µm) was fabricated by anodization in a mixture of oxalic acid and ethylene glycol. The film was incorporated into a laboratory XRD instrument. Compared with using a glass polycapillary alone, using a combination of a glass polycapillary and the AAO film improved the spatial resolution of the XRD imaging method by 40%. This XRD imaging method should not only provide practical analysis in a laboratory environment but also support various observations of the crystal structure distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In ultrafast laser writing, and light‐matter interaction in general, it has been widely accepted that the higher the energy density, the stronger material changes occur, unless thermal effects are involved. Here, this belief is challenged by demonstrating that a decreased energy density—achieved through increased scanning speed and without thermal accumulation—surprisingly leads to a more significant modification of silica glass, i.e, a higher increase in the isotropic refractive index or greater birefringence of nanopore‐mediated modification. This counterintuitive phenomenon is attributed to the nonlocality of light‐matter interaction at tight focusing, where the intensity gradient of the light beam and associated diffusion of charge carriers play a critical role in increasing material modification. A tenfold increase in the writing speed of the polarization multiplexed data storage with the potential to achieve MB s‐1 using high transmission nanopore‐based modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of beam‐based technologies to process optical elements with nanoscale precision enables the fabrication of freeform surfaces. Especially, atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJ) have desirable properties such as atmospheric pressure machining, dry processing, and direct writing capabilities. However, the presence of metal oxides in optical glasses leads to the formation of nonvolatile reaction products during APPJ etching with fluorine‐containing gas mixtures, forming a residual layer that increases surface roughness and alters etching behavior. To prevent the formation of the residual layer, the APPJ process is combined with laser cleaning. For a possible future in situ cleaning of the residual layer during the plasma process, laser parameter ranges need to be found to remove the residual layer without damaging the glass surface. Therefore, planar etchings are performed by APPJ on N‐BK7 and Zerodur and the etched planes are subsequently laser irradiated with varying pulse numbers and fluences. The processed samples are then examined by scanning electron microscopy. For both N‐BK7 and Zerodur, a parameter range is identified that results in clean surfaces. The best machining results are achieved with 2–16 pulses and laser fluences of 0.6–1.2 J cm−2 for N‐BK7 and 0.56–0.7 J cm−2 for Zerodur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glasses that contain Erbium oxide as a dopant exhibit garnered considerable interest for its use in photonic applications, primarily because of the intra-4f sublevel transitions of Erbium ions, which enable emission in the technologically significant 1.5 μm communications window. In this work, a series of Erbium oxide doped sodium lithium borate glasses were synthesized via melt quenching with compositions x Er 2 O 3 -(55-x)B 2 O 3 –25Li 2 O–10Na 2 O–5CaO–3SrO–2Al 2 O 3 (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 5 mol%). An investigation was conducted to examine the consequences of Er3+ on the crystal structure and laser spectroscopy. Furthermore, the optical properties of the samples that were created. XRD analysis showed degradation of the glass network with increasing Er 2 O 3 content due to disruption of boroxol rings. FTIR spectra indicated variations in BO 3 /BO 4 ratios and Er–O vibrations with doping. Absorption spectra revealed characteristic Er3+ f-f transitions and a redshift in the UV edge. The bright field imaging proved the effect of Er3+ on the homogeneity of the surfaces. Meanwhile, 3D laser Raman mapping chemically proves the good distribution of Er 2 O 3 on the glass surface. With an excitation under 980 nm, visible emissions at 550 and 660 nm, along with NIR emission at 1550 nm arising from Er3+ 4f levels, were observed. The results demonstrate that Er3+ doping effectively modifies the glass structure and optical properties. The borate glass host provides an excellent platform for customized erbium-doped photonic devices operating in the telecom C-band. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the athermal and apochromatic design of optical systems, the distribution of lens' optical powers and the selection of optical glass and structural materials are crucial. In this paper, an athermal and apochromatic design method is proposed for optical systems with a long focal length, large relative aperture, and wide spectrum. Firstly, a complex optical system composed of multiple lenses is equivalent to a two-component, single-lens system consisting of a replacement and an equivalent lens group. The optical glass for the replacement lens group is selected based on weight and the principle of material replacement in the 3D glass diagram, thus achieving an athermal and apochromatic design. Secondly, an athermal and apochromatic optical system with a focal length of 130 mm, an F-number of 2.0, a spectral range of 480 nm~800 nm, a field of view angle of 22°, and an operating temperature of −40 °C~+60 °C is designed. The modulation transfer function (MTF) at each field of view is greater than 0.6 at 50 lp/mm in the −40 °C~+60 °C temperature range, and the secondary spectrum aberration is 0.0056 mm, which is within the focal depth range of the optical system. BK7 glass, with its outstanding mechanical strength and optical performance, plays a crucial role in many cutting-edge technological fields and has become an indispensable and important material. These fields have extremely high requirements for the surface quality of BK7 glass, and any small defects or losses may affect its optical performance and stability. However, as a hard and brittle material, the processing of BK7 glass is extremely challenging, requiring precise control of machining parameters to avoid material fracture or excessive defects. Therefore, how to obtain the required surface quality with lower cost machining techniques has always been the focus of researchers. This article introduces the properties, application background, machining methods, material removal mechanism, and surface and subsurface damage of optical glass BK7 material. As a result of studying the mechanism of optical glass polishing by means of disperse systems from ceria powders, it has been established that glass is eliminated via the removal of sludge nanoparticles from the treated surface during its interaction with polishing powder particles, which occurs in an open microresonator formed by the surfaces of the treated material and polishing powder particles due to Förster resonant energy transfer between the energy levels of polishing powder and treated material particles. It has been shown that, in a bimodal system with a discrete spectrum of natural frequencies, the number of sludge nanoparticles generated in the treated surface–disperse system–lap surface grows with an increase in the bulk wear coefficient, the lifetime of the excited state of treated surface clusters, and the microresonator Q factor. A method of calculating the treated material removal rate and the roughness parameters of polished surfaces has been developed to establish that the deviation of the calculated polishing rate from experimental data is less than 2%, and the errors of calculating the arithmetic mean Ra and mean square Rq deviations of the polished surface profile attain 10%, and the calculated maximum profile height Rmax is 40–50% underestimated as compared to experimental data. The magneto‐optical properties of rare‐earth‐rich borate glasses prepared using a levitation technique were thoroughly investigated. Among the series of rare‐earth borate glasses, Tb2O3–B2O3 and Dy2O3–B2O3 glasses displayed remarkably large Faraday effects in the visible region. The Verdet constant of 58Tb2O3–42B2O3 reached −229 rad/T·m at 633 nm, surpassing the value of commercially available single‐crystalline Tb3Ga5O12. Compositions with a higher rare‐earth oxide content (60 mol%) than that of binary glasses facilitated the successful synthesis of Tb2O3–Dy2O3–B2O3 ternary glasses. The Verdet constant linearly increased with increasing Tb2O3 content for the glasses with 40 mol% B2O3. Results indicate that rare‐earth‐rich borate glasses are promising candidates for magneto‐optical applications in the visible region, and that the types and amounts of rare‐earth ion mainly affect these properties. In this study, the dense and fine‐grained zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) composite ceramics were efficiently prepared by 3D gel printing technology. Zirconia powder, zirconium oxychloride, and zirconium sol were introduced into boehmite gel as zirconium sources, and their effects on rheological properties, drying characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of ceramics were discussed. The results showed that all gels exhibit reversible shear thinning properties. The gel with zirconia powder has a relaxation phenomenon; zirconium sol forms another gel network in the boehmite gel network, and two linear viscoelastic regions are observed. The gel with zirconia powder has the highest solid loading, small drying shrinkage, and fewer drying defects. The grain growth of ZTA ceramics with zirconium sol was inhibited, and the zirconia grains were evenly distributed, with the highest bending strength of 518 ± 103 MPa. The new gel preparation method and gel drying process offer great possibilities for manufacturing optical glasses and functional ceramics with high‐performance geometric structures, which cannot be achieved by traditional manufacturing methods. Er3+‐doped fluoride glass and fiber have been widely used in multiple fields such as mid‐infrared laser, visible laser, and amplifier. However, there is no unified conclusion on the thermal and optical properties with respect to varying concentrations of Er3+ doping. Furthermore, this is a paucity of systematic guidance on the preparation of Er3+‐doped fluoride glass and fiber. In this study, fluorozirconate fiberglass with Er3+ doping is systematically examined. Additionally, a preliminary explanation of the evolutionary behavior of glass devitrification, thermal properties, and fluorescence properties is provided. Energy transition models were built for 1.5 and 2.7 µm emissions in Er3+‐doped fluorozirconate at room temperature. Moreover, a suitable doping concentration is proposed based on the evolutionary behavior of thermal and optical properties. Supercontinuum (SC) generation from alkali antimony zinc borate glasses was investigated using a femtosecond laser. The optical bandgap values were determined for all the glass samples. An enhancement in the generated SC is seen from sodium-doped glass although it possesses the least bandgap among the glass samples. The physical parameters of the glasses such as density, molar volume, refractive index, oxide ion polarizability, and optical basicity have been analyzed and discussed. The smaller values of the metallization criterion indicate the tendency of the glass samples to exhibit metallic behavior, which, in turn, affects the non-linear optical properties of the glasses. The shift in the binding energies of metal cations and oxygen anions was observed using XPS analysis, which gives an understanding about the extent of overlapping of valence orbitals in the glass system. Established on the appealing properties of borate glass, a new magnesium borate glass of definite composition (56 − x)B2O3–40Na2O–4MoO3–xMgO (x = 0, 2, 4, 8 mol. %) is prepared via the melt quenching technique. The present study clarified the consequence of dopant and co-dopant on the borate glass. Different physical properties are sustained to investigate and explain the optical and electrical properties of the obtained glass as a result of the replacement of B2O3 by MgO. FTIR confirmed the conversion of MgO6 into MgO4. The index of refraction increased is accompanied by a decrease in bandgap energy. At a frequency of 0.1 Hz, the ac-conductivity varies between 4 and 20 pS/cm at 25 °C and between 10 and 30 nS/cm at 150 °C without the systematic effect of MgO concentration, which indicates that heating plays the main role in improving conductivity. The metallization criterion is between 0.41 and 0.425. The computed two-photon absorption values ranged from 5.313 to 8.391 cm/GW; therefore, it is recommended that the prepared glasses are ideal for optical signal-processing equipment and are considered promising as a new member of the nonlinear optical glass. The current study uses zinc oxide doping nanoparticles to investigate the radiation shielding properties of bismuth borate glass. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) examined the structural characteristics of the current samples. In contrast, the optical properties were determined based on the absorption spectrum for current samples. Appraisal studies are carried out depending on the simulation capabilities of Phy-X/PSD software in conjunction with MCNP5 to achieve this goal. In addition, the neutron and charged particle shielding properties were evaluated theoretically. All glasses are amorphous, as confirmed by the XRD data, and the FTIR data showed several vibration bands and functional groups. The density showed rising from 5.981 to 6.433 g/cm3 with adding ZnO. The band gap values reduced from 2.831 to 2.091 eV for direct and 3.024 to 2.218 eV for indirect with adding ZnO. The investigations' findings demonstrate a strong agreement between the theoretical and simulation-derived estimates of the mass attenuation coefficient. The relative difference of MAC results lie in the range 0.106–2.941% for BBZ0, 0.105–4.348% for BBZ1, 0.105–3.398% for BBZ2, and 0.105–2.032% for BBZ3. The study's findings are valuable insights from thoroughly examining these parameters, which can potentially improve the radiation protection abilities of Bi2O3–B2O3–ZnO glasses. This research meticulously explores the synthesis, structural, thermal and optical characterization of zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) infused strontium borate glasses (termed SZ glasses) and their applicability as radiation shielding. The glasses have been produced using the melt quenching process in the composition series of (60-x)B 2 O 3 : xZnO: 10SrO: 10Na 2 O: 10CaO: 10BaO, where x varied from 0 to 20 % mol. In order to dope ZnO into glasses, its structural and morphological characteristics were investigated after it was synthesized by solution combustion method. It was found that the inclusion of ZnO significantly impacted the glasses' density, molar volume, hardness, yield stress, and thermal stability. The optical properties of the produced glasses, such as transmittance, reflection, transparency, opacity and band gap energies, were examined and the effect of ZnO on the optical properties of the glasses was investigated. Crucially, the SZ glasses exhibited notable efficiency in shielding against gamma photons and fast neutrons. This is evidenced by the favourable change in the mass attenuation coefficients with increasing ZnO concentration. Parameters like the half-value layer, effective atomic number, and energy absorption buildup factors were calculated to gauge the radiation attenuation proficiency of the SZ glasses, demonstrating their potential utility in radiation protection. In conclusion, the developed SZ glasses display advantageous structural, thermal, and optical qualities, along with robust shielding capabilities against gamma photons and fast neutrons. Unlike polymers, glass is prone to fracturing under localized stress during roll embossing. Molds traditionally used for glass embossing are rigid and unsuitable for roll embossing. In this investigation, we utilized a modified soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold, known for its ease of fabrication and superior replication capacity, for roller embossing on glass. This innovation significantly cuts mold expenses while preserving PDMS's hydrophobic and low surface energy attributes. Consequently, it prevents adhesion between the glass and the mold during high-temperature embossing, ensuring that the demolding process does not harm the glass surface. We successfully carried out roll embossing on optical glass with a mere 1.65 mm thickness, using a self-devised stainless steel carrier plate and a mobile induction heating apparatus. This heating methodology departs from the conventional practice of employing multiple heat sources in glass embossing and instead uses a singular heat source. Induction heating is applied directly to the mold and 420 stainless steel carrier. The optical glass surface reaches a remarkably uniform temperature, with a minimal temperature differential of only 2.5 °C, which is highly advantageous for mobile roller embossing, resulting in a high replication rate of V-groove microstructures on glass. The glass with a 12.5Li2O–50GeO2–37.5P2O5 composition was synthesized by melt quenching. Thermal annealing was used to obtain a single-phase LiGe2(PO4)3 composition, which is promising as a solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-ion power sources. By using full x-ray scattering with analysis of the pair distribution function, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the UV-Vis range, the local structure and optical properties of initial (amorphous) glass and crystallized glass were studied. An assessment of the influence of glass crystallization on these properties was carried out. It was shown that structuring in the glass is observed only at the level of the first-second coordination sphere of Ge and P atoms. The presence of F+ centers in the glass was revealed in the optical absorption spectra of the initial glass; their concentration decreases as a result of glass crystallization. The estimated value of the band gap for the crystallized glass, i.e., for the LiGe2(PO4)3 phase, is 6.15 eV for the case of direct allowed transitions, which exceeds the calculated value known from the literature by approximately 2 times. A series of mixed glass formers (MGF) with varying compositions denoted as (79-x)B2O3-xTeO2-20Li2O-0.5Ho2O3-0.5Yb2O3 (x = 0–50 mol%) were prepared using the melt-quenching technique. This aim of this study was to examine the effect of combining glass formers TeO2 and B2O3 on the structural, DC conductivity, elastic, and optical properties of the glass system. XRD measurements confirmed the amorphous nature of the glass samples. Structural analysis revealed a rivalry between the TeO2 and B2O3 formers. It was observed that the bridging oxygen (BO) indicated by the BO4 functional group decreases gradually at x ≥ 40 mol%, implying that non-bridging oxygen (NBO) units, denoted by BO3, become dominant beyond 40 mol%. The variation in DC conductivity showed a non-linear behaviour upon addition of TeO2, with the conductivity increasing to a maximum value at x = 30 mol% before decreasing at x > 30 mol%. Interestingly, the conductivity showed a slight decline at x = 40 mol%, possibly resisting a decrease due to the mixed glass former effect (MGFE). Elastic moduli such as CL, Ke and Y exhibited a non-linear decrease between 10 ≤ x ≤ 30 mol% and reached a lowest value for x = 40 mol%, which coincided with the maximum of DC conductivity attributed to MGFE. Quantitative analysis of ultrasonic data, utilizing bulk compression and ring deformation models, revealed that the Kbc/Ke value is maximum at x = 40 mol%, implying a reduction in ring deformation within the MGFE region. UV–Vis spectroscopy demonstrated that with increasing TeO2 content, Eopt and Eopt' decreased except for x = 40 mol%. The refractive index, n also increased except at x = 40 mol%. Microcantilever arrays are valuable tools for detecting minute physical and chemical changes. Traditional microcantilever array systems, including our previous work utilizing multiple laser arrays, frequently encounter high complexity, significant costs, and increased noise caused by laser switching. This study introduces a refraction-based laser scanning system that significantly mitigates these issues by employing a rotating glass optical block for multiplex scanning. This innovative approach not only simplifies the scanning process by eliminating the need to move the laser source or the microcantilever array but also enhances scanning speed and reduces noise, as demonstrated by our experiments. Dynamically responsive materials, capable of reversible changes in color appearance and/or photoemission upon external stimuli, have attracted substantial attention across various fields. This study presents an effective approach wherein switchable modulation of photochromism and ultralong phosphorescence can be achieved simultaneously in a zero-dimensional organic-inorganic halide hybrid glass doped with 4,4´-bipyridine. The facile fabrication of large-scale glasses is accomplished through a combined grinding-melting-quenching process. The persistent luminescence can be regulated through the photochromic switch induced by photo-generated radicals. Furthermore, the incorporation of the aggregation-induced chirality effect generates intriguing circularly polarized luminescence, with an optical dissymmetry factor (glum) reaching the order of 10–2. Exploiting the dynamic ultralong phosphorescence, this work further achieves promising applications, such as three-dimensional optical storage, rewritable photo-patterning, and multi-mode anti-counterfeiting with ease. Therefore, this study introduces a smart hybrid glass platform as a new photo-responsive switchable system, offering versatility for a wide array of photonic applications. With the rapid growth of the electronic display industry, aluminosilicate glass has emerged as a replacement for traditional soda lime silica glass as the cover plate of various display devices because of its excellent physical and chemical properties. High transmittance and low reflectivity are the inevitable requirements of its application. However, few studies have been reported about the antireflection of aluminosilicate glass. In this study, a two-step etching method was employed to treat both sides of the alkali-aluminosilicate glass to obtain surface antireflection. Analytical methods such as EPMA, AFM, and UV spectrophotometry were utilized to evaluate the effect of the etching process and resultant surface microstructure on the optical properties of the glass. Furthermore, comparative research was conducted to distinguish the etching reaction differences between alkali-aluminosilicate glass and other glass compositions like soda-lime glass and high-boron-silicon glass. The results demonstrated that the controlled two-step etching process created a micro-porous surface structure, with a gradient refractive index. Subsequent to the secondary etching, the glass exhibits an impressive average transmittance of 98.88% within the visible light spectrum (380–780 nm). Hybrid glasses derived from meltable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promise to combine the intriguing properties of MOFs with the universal processing ability of glasses. However, the shaping of hybrid glasses in their liquid state – in analogy to conventional glass processing – has been elusive thus far. Here, we present optical-quality glasses derived from the zeolitic imidazole framework ZIF-62 in the form of cm-scale objects. These allow for in-depth studies of optical transparency and refraction across the ultraviolet to near-infrared spectral range. Fundamental viscosity data are reported using a ball penetration technique, and subsequently employed to demonstrate the fabrication of micro-optical devices by thermal imprinting. Using 3D-printed fused silica templates, we show that concave as well as convex lens structures can be obtained at high precision by remelting the glass without trading-off on material quality. This enables multifunctional micro-optical devices combining the gas uptake and permeation ability of MOFs with the optical functionality of glass. As an example, we demonstrate the reversible change of optical refraction upon the incorporation of volatile guest molecules. Hybrid MOF-glasses can be shaped and processed in analogy to conventional glasses. Volume nanogratings imprinted by infrared femtosecond laser in oxide glasses exhibit a characteristic birefringent signature, which translates into measurable retardance. Upon thermal annealing, such signature is progressively erased, typical of nanograting erasure. In this work, we propose a procedure to predict the lifespan of nanogratings by two main approaches: 1/ numerical modeling of optical retardance ageing using the Rayleigh-Plesset equation, and 2/exploiting VAREPA (VAriable REaction PAthways) framework fed by simulated ageing data. By considering experimental time – temperature annealing conditions, the modeled retardance is gathered as a function of demarcation energy to build a so-called Master Curve and then compared to accelerated ageing experiments. The erasure constant rate k 0 can be determined for 8 commercial optical glasses. Based on a distributed Rayleigh-Plesset model, k 0 and activation energy distribution are linked to glass viscosity and its temperature dependency. Finally, we discussed the restrictions on VAREPA application for an accurate lifetime prediction. This work provides guidelines for the future development of nanogratings based devices and applications, including optical data storage, birefringent devices, and optical sensors, through a judicious choice of glass composition and associated properties. Owing to the large storage capacity, the transparent luminescent glass with photo‐induced coloration properties has attracted considerable interest in recent years. However, lots of the photochromic (PC) mechanisms for glass are related to the ionic valence transformation, and the study associated with the defects‐induced photochromism of glass is limited. Herein, a kind of Sm3+ doped PC cadmium glass is fabricated, for which the PC mechanism is systematically investigated by various techniques, such as XPS spectra, thermoluminescence spectra, EPR spectra, etc. The results show that the mechanism of coloration for such glass should be due to the presence of oxygen vacancy‐related electron centers. Under 365 nm light irradiation, the color of the glass turns from colorless to brown, exhibiting a large color contrast, of 62%. Utilizing the re‐absorption process between absorption spectra and emission/excitation spectra, the emission intensity of Sm3+ is reversibly regulated, indicating their promising applications as an optical storage medium. A rotating stall in centrifugal pumps commonly occurs under off-design operations, which is a detrimental phenomenon leading to flow instabilities, pressure fluctuations, and reduced performance. A time-resolved non-intrusive three-dimensional (3D) flow visualization method is developed for investigating complex vortex structures in centrifugal pumps based on Omega vortex identification and tomographic particle image velocimetry (tomo-PIV). A special-made centrifugal pump prototype was developed with acrylic glass allowing for optical access. This method enables both qualitative and quantitative analysis of high spatiotemporal resolution on flow behaviors and dynamics under various stall conditions. The ultra-high sampling frequency realized over 40 time-consecutive observations per revolution under 0.2 Q d , 0.4 Q d , 0.6 Q d , and 0.8 Q d . It captures the instantaneous evolution of vortex structures that undergoes a growth–breakup transition within 7–9 ms. The rotating stall mechanism is revealed experimentally from the evolution of the vortex structure. Our analysis shows the tomo-PIV's additional velocity component aids in understanding the 3D characteristics of the stall. A substantial region of reverse flow in the z-axis direction is observed under 0.2 Q d . Vortex structures are more prone to blockage at the impeller inlet, exacerbating the stall phenomenon. As the flow rate increases, the velocity distributions across different layers exhibit a laminar characteristic with a more uniform profile. The vortex structures extend radially and migrate toward the outlet. The evolutions of the stall vortex, wake vortex, and inlet vortex share the same dominant frequency components (4.75 f n and 5.25 f n ), but the flow rate affects the proportion of different frequency components. This study examines the physical, optical and mechanical characteristics of BWP glasses. The density and molar mass increase as the WO3 concentration rises, resulting in a denser and more substantial glass sample. However, the molar volume decreases, indicating a reduction in volume due to the increased density caused by WO3. The inclusion of WO3 also leads to a tighter spacing between atoms. The optical basicity of the glass increases with higher WO3 concentrations. The electronegativity decreases, suggesting the glass becomes more electron-donating. The electronic polarizability and cross-link density increase, resulting in a stiffer and more robust glass network. The mechanical moduli, including Young's modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus, and longitudinal modulus, also increase with higher WO3 concentrations, indicating improved mechanical characteristics and reduced deformation. The Poisson's ratio shows a larger transverse deformation tendency with increasing WO3 concentration. Micro-hardness values increase with WO3 content, indicating enhanced durability and mechanical robustness. Expanding gain bandwidth into the L-band for erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is a crucial strategy to overcome limitations in prevalent C-band focused commercial silica-based EDFAs, significantly boosting optical network transmission capacity. Herein, we synthesized Er3+-doped broadband near-infrared emission tellurite glasses utilizing the melt quenching process, systematically exploring the impact of ZnCl 2 on the glass structure and optical properties. The 82TeO 2 –3Nb 2 O 5 –15ZnCl 2 –3Er 2 O 3 (TNZ15) glass emerged as a standout candidate for broadband amplifiers around wavelength at 1.55 μm. With escalating ZnCl 2 concentration, a discernible red shift in the emission peak wave lines was observed, accompanied by an expansion of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 98 nm to 106 nm. Noteworthy characteristics of all samples included exceptional thermal stability and elevated near-infrared (NIR) transmittance. Application of the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory facilitated the calculation of J-O parameter intensity, providing deeper insights into the optical behavior of the materials. Finally, the evaluation of TNZ15 planar optical waveguides, employing the vertical top pumping mode of two 980 nm LEDs, encompassed both the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and the L-band (1565–1625 nm). In this investigation, perovskite La0·8Sr0·2FeO3 nanocrystals were cultivated within heavy metal oxide glass, utilizing Al2O3 tailoring. The study delves into the impact of La0·8Sr0·2FeO3 formation on both the glass structure and optical/magnetic properties. Employing diverse techniques such as x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron microscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectra, we scrutinized these influences. The synthesis resulted in well-distributed, orthogonal La0·8Sr0·2FeO3 nanocrystals measuring 10-30 nm within the glass matrix. This crystallization induced alterations in the structure and coordination numbers of B2O3, Al2O3 and Bi2O3. Notably, the introduction of 10% Al2O3 in the glass manifested an abnormality effect, showcasing the highest transparency, the smallest La0·8Sr0·2FeO3 size (10 nm), and minimal nonbridging oxygen defects. Remarkably, the glass with 10% Al2O3 demonstrated an intriguing aluminium-induced effect, exhibiting the highest transparency, the smallest La0·8Sr0·2FeO3 size (10 nm), and the least nonbridging oxygen defects. Furthermore, this glass exhibited an enhanced electron paramagnetic resonance signal, the highest percentage (71%) of tetrahedral FeO4 units and an improved Mössbauer sextets intensity, making it particularly promising for applications in photonics devices. Tellurite glass systems in the form of 10ZnO-(75-x)TeO2-(15+x)PbO with x=5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mol% were prepared using the melt quenching technique. The optical characteristics of the glass were identified by using Ultraviolet Visible Infrared spectroscopy analysis (UV-Vis-NIR) at 200-900 nm. The optical band gap and refractive index were calculated for all glass samples. Values of the direct and indirect band gap range have been found in the range 2·773-3·099 eV and 2·251-2·574 eV with increasing concentration. In addition, the value of the refractive index was found to be between 2·27-2·41. The amorphous state of the glass samples is confirmed using the x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The bonding characteristics were examined using the Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) technique in the range 400-4000 cm-1, and it was determined that they were ionic bonding in composition. Multifunctional antireflective coatings (ARC) have great importance in various applications such as optical devices, flat panel displays, solar cell devices, and so on. Here in this work, highly transparent superhydrophilic film was developed on a cleaned glass substrate by depositing porous TEOS/PF‐127 using the spin coating technique. The coating shows a maximum transparency of 95% in the visible region (400–800 nm). The morphology and porous nature of the prepared sample was analyzed using FESEM and BET analysis respectively. The prepared film exhibited a water contact angle of 9° ensures its superhydrophilic nature. It is also noteworthy that TEOS/PF‐127 coating possesses photocatalytic activity by showing good photo degradation against MB (Methylene Blue) dye under UV‐B (280–315 nm, 50 W) and halogen (340–850 nm, 50 W) light irradiation. The present work provides a simple cost‐effective method to enhance the optical transparency of the glass substrate along with good self‐cleaning properties via photocatalytic activity. This developed 1.2‐inch 4K2K LCOS with 76.0 lp/mm spatial resolution can still achieve high phase accuracy and obviously enlarge field‐of‐viewing (FOV) angle compared with previous 0.55‐inch 2K1K LCOS. The holographic image quality within phase‐only LCOS not only can be improved by using higher phase accuracy and compensation technologies, but also can realize the real 3D imaging into near‐eye displays to avoid the VAC phenomena. In addition to, the holographic 4K2K LCOS (26.6mm x 15.8mm) optical design can achieve lighter optical engine and reconstructed square (26.6mm x 26.6mm) image per eye, so that it has advantages of more feasible driving condition and cost competition. As high‐speed technologies of display electronics, liquid crystal, and optical algorithm were gradually mature, the above 1.2" phase‐only LCOS with both high pixel resolution and smaller pixel pitch will be another choice into the VR & MR headsets utilized video see‐through (VST) method. Meanwhile, the 1.2" 4K2K LCOS with enhanced FOV can be alternative scheme for AR glasses using optical see‐through (OST) method before the trade‐off between volume, brightness, and FOV angle are resolved.
