Plans for expanding protected area systems (prioritizations) need to fulfill conservation objectives. They also need to account for other factors, such as economic feasibility and anthropogenic land‐use requirements. Although prioritizations are often generated with decision support tools, most tools have limitations that hinder their use for decision‐making. We outlined how the prioritizr R package (https://prioritizr.net) can be used for systematic conservation prioritization. This decision support tool provides a flexible interface to build conservation planning problems. It can leverage a variety of commercial (e.g., Gurobi) and open‐source (e.g., CBC and SYMPHONY) exact algorithm solvers to identify optimal solutions in a short period. It is also compatible with a variety of spatially explicit (e.g., ESRI Shapefile, GeoTIFF) and nonspatial tabular (e.g., Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet) data formats. Additionally, it provides functionality for evaluating prioritizations, such as assessing the relative importance of different places selected by a prioritization. To showcase the prioritizr R package, we applied it to a case study based in Washington state (United States) for which we developed a prioritization to improve protected area coverage of native avifauna. We accounted for land acquisition costs, existing protected areas, places that might not be suitable for protected area establishment, and spatial fragmentation. We also conducted a benchmark analysis to examine the performance of different solvers. The prioritization identified 12,400 km2 of priority areas for increasing the percentage of species’ distributions covered by protected areas. Although open source and commercial solvers were able to quickly solve large‐scale conservation planning problems, commercial solvers were required for complex, large‐scale problems.. The prioritizr R package is available on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). In addition to reserve selection, it can inform habitat restoration, connectivity enhancement, and ecosystem service provisioning. It has been used in numerous conservation planning exercises to inform best practices and aid real‐world decision‐making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CLIMATE change adaptation , *RARE mammals , *PROTECTED areas , *LAND management , *CLIMATE change - Abstract
Current rates of climate change and gloomy climate projections confront managers and conservation planners with the need to integrate climate change into already complex decision‐making processes. Predicting and prioritizing climatically stable areas and the areas likely to facilitate adaptive species’ range adjustments are important stages in maximizing conservation outcomes and rationalizing future land management. I determined, for the most threatened European terrestrial mammal species, the spatial adaptive trajectories (SATs) of highest expected persistence up to 2080. I devised simple spatial network indices for evaluation of species in those SATs: total persistence; proportion of SATs that offer in situ adaptation (i.e., stable refugia); number of SATs converging in a site; and relationship between SAT convergence and persistence and protected areas, the Natura 2000 and Emerald networks, and areas of low human disturbance. I compared the performance of high‐persistence SATs with a scenario in which each species remained in the areas with the best climatic conditions in the baseline period. The 1000 most persistence SATs for each of the 39 species covered one fifth of Europe. The areas with the largest adaptive potential (i.e., high persistence, stability, and SAT convergence) did not always overlap for all the species. Predominantly, these regions were located in southwestern Europe, Central Europe, and Scandinavia, with some occurrences in Eastern Europe. For most species, persistence in the most climatically suitable areas during the baseline period was lower than within SATs, underscoring their reliance on adaptive movements. Importantly, conservation areas (particularly protected areas) covered only minor fractions of species persistence among SATs, and hubs of spatial climate adaptation (i.e., areas of high SAT convergence) were seriously underrepresented in most conservation areas. These results highlight the need to perform analyses on spatial species’ dynamics under climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction/purpose: The paper analyses and optimizes the welded I-girder of the single-beam bridge crane with a U-profile as the top flange. This solution is to provide a lighter carrying structure, so the main goal is to minimize the weight of the main girder, i.e., the cross-sectional area while fulfiling the requirements defined by national standards and geometric constraints. Methods: The Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm was chosen for solving this single-objective multi-criteria optimization task using MATLAB. Also, the results were verified by using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Results: The proposed girder shape is justified in examples of real solutions of single-beam bridge cranes and the previous research results. In this case, significant savings in the material and better results are achieved compared to the examples from the previous research. Conclusion: The proposed girder shape, methodology, the optimization algorithm and the achieved savings fully justify this research. Furthermore, this algorithm enables the application of many constraint functions, whereby the optimal values of numerous variables are obtained in a relatively short period. Therefore, it would not be possible to find the solution for that engineering task by applying analytical optimization methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considering the applicability and added value of acetylated starches, it is necessary to find technological variants to obtain them with favorable technical-economic results and energetic and environmental compatibility. The objective of the work is to optimize economic and dynamic indicators of profitability of acetylated starch production, by considering as optimization criteria the productive capacity, the degree of substitution and the temperature of the drying air, establishing the design of the installation in optimal conditions. Technologies adopted from the mechanized native starch processes were selected, and the design and development of the slurry heating, acetylation, and pneumatic drying stages were proposed. A composite central experimental design was generated for profit (P), net present value (NPV), and internal rate of return (IRR), and the quadratic models obtained through the Response Surface Methodology were optimized. For the evaluation of the indicators, the economic indexes of the process were determined, after technological selection, material and energy balances, and technological design. The optimum operating parameters are achieved at a production capacity of 12.57 tcassava/d, degree of substitution of 0.505 and 124.98 °C in the air supply to the pneumatic dryer. Under these conditions, the production of acetylated starch requires larger volume acetylators than for acetylated gelatinized starch process, but the technological requirements of gelatinized pulp are eliminated, achieving remarkable energy efficiency with pneumatic drying. Extrudates were first prepared through extrusion-cooking and air-drying of different formulations obtained through a D-optimal Mixture Design containing blends of rice flour (RF), green lentil flour (GL), chickpeas flour (CP), and tomato powder (TP) in different proportions. These extrudates were subjected to deep oil frying (DOF) at 200fiC or microwave roasting (MWR) at 75% power level (1000W oven) in order to develop desirable color and flavor characteristics. Physical properties including color (L*, a*, b*), expansion ratio (ER), breaking stress (BS) and antioxidant activity (AA) were evaluated, and the influence of product variables on output parameters was assessed. Increasing CP and GL in the formulations resulted in a decrease in the ER and an increase in the BS. However, the inclusion of CP and TP helped to produce snacks of golden yellow color and increased their overall acceptability. The addition of TP also improved the antioxidant activity of the resulting product. Both DOF and MWR resulted in a lower antioxidant activity; however, MWR led to more than 80% retention of the original antioxidants and higher sensory acceptability. ER and L* values had a strong positive correlation with the overall acceptability of products. The extrusion - air-drying - microwave roasting process produced healthy snacks with acceptable sensory quality, high protein (through added pulses), and enriched antioxidant (through added tomato powder) contents.

In previous works we presented a novel multiparametric sensor to simultaneously measure the refractive index and the speed of sound in a liquid by means of the acousto-optic effect. The sensor requires an illumination system that expands the laser beam so that it interacts effectively with the liquid under study. Also, a projection system is necessary in order to adequately capture the diffraction pattern at the cell exit. In this article, we present the optimization of the sensor illumination and projection system using the optical design computational tool Zemax OpticStudio. The considered range of refractive indices of the liquid samples is between 1.33 and 1.51. The results show a correct expansion of the incident beam on the cell, and the projection system achieves an image with very few aberrations and an adequate angular separation between the maxima of the diffraction pattern. From the resulting dimensions of the sensor after the illumination and projection system optimization, we affirm that it is compact and portable.

The integrated management of solid waste at the household level involves adequate collection logistics for recovery by waste collectors. The objective of this study was to optimize the route for access to waste at strategic points in the city of Manizales (Colombia), in addition to analyzing the qualitative characteristics related to a process of sensitization of the executing personnel. The integration of the numerical inputs and study variables was carried out through the application of the Shortest Route optimization algorithm, while the SWOT matrix was implemented to analyze the operational satisfaction conditions. The results generated a reduction in routes in 62.5% of the cases, obtaining savings of up to 28.61% of kilometers traveled daily by the reclaimers. It was also identified that factors such as topography and climate have a direct impact on collection activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this research was to increase the energy efficiency in the transport of fluids in the nickel industry through modeling and solving an optimization problem, where the factors analyzed are: solids content, granulometry, chemical composition and temperature, due to the little knowledge of how these variables influence the energy efficiency of said equipment. Based on experimental studies and using statistical procedures and estimators, the behavior of the rheological parameters is modeled as a function of temperature, solids content and chemical composition. It is observed that the lateritic hydromixtures present plastic properties adjusting to a Herschel Bulkley model for real plastics. From an appropriate discretization of the raw pulp pumping system model and the application of the combinatorial optimization procedure, the exploitation parameters of this system were obtained. Objective: Due to the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases every day in India, numerous academics are already developing a variety of math-based estimation models to forecast the pandemic future course. This paper makes use of publicly available data to anticipate certain COVID-19 trajectories in India. Methods: We used the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average Model, a time series model, to anticipate the number of COVID-19 infected cases every day soon. People need to consume nutritious food that is well-balanced and contains the right number of calories, nutrients, as well as vitamins for strong development, bearing in mind that sustaining and repairing bodily tissues is the goal while preventing unfavorable illnesses and disease. Results: Recent studies have shown that healthy eating can help lower the possibilities of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease and for COVID patients. Therefore, an optimization strategy and LINDO software was used to solve the model. This study offers an exhaustive daily meal plan created especially for hospital patients, acting as a helpful resource for school administrators. With six different food choices, the diet plan makes sure that you get all the nutrients you need each day at a reasonable price. Conclusions: The model is solved using LINDO software in the study, which shows how effective it is when compared to other heuristic techniques like biological algorithms. It is determined through thorough investigation that the chosen meals are both financially and nutritionally feasible to serve in ho spital settings. Hospital patients make up the study's participants, and each day's total cost comes to Rs109.34. This cost makes it possible to deliver meals that are minimally more costly but of higher quality, improving the patients' overall nutritional value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OPERATING costs , *MATERIALS handling , *COST structure , *CAPITAL costs , *LOCATION analysis - Abstract
There is vast research on particular aspects of warehouse design - layout, material handling, order picking, and operating policies - when, in fact, the decisions involved in the process are interrelated. In this paper, we develop an engineering economics framework for warehouse operations that decomposes the cost structure of the operation and lays out the relationships between them. Our framework decomposes operational costs into four exogenous characteristics (wages, leasing costs, cost of capital, and access to technology) that depend on the geographic location of the warehouse and two operational requirements (throughput and storage capacity). Using these six parameters, and publicly available information, practitioners can estimate the total operational cost of the warehouse for potential locations in facility location analysis, which have been traditionally limited to transportation costs. In our case study, we use our framework to establish a rank of preferable warehouse locations in terms of operational costs among logistics clusters in the United States of America.

This work identifies the advantages and limitations of approaches that seek to optimize financial resources, and highlights the current problems that organizations face when carrying out this activity. The main result is the description of a hybrid approach that incorporates the use of computational intelligence in financial decision-making that can help overcome such limitations. The optimal use of financial resources is one of the most important factors in the success of organizations. However, many organizations often rely on the empirical experience of their management to decide how to allocate their financial resources, ignoring the technological and modeling advances that have revolutionized financial decision-making globally. Production scheduling is one of the most important tasks in manufacturing systems since it allows the allocation of jobs with a certain number of available resources. In the production and service industries, meeting the established commitments with the different customers and production deadlines can lead to higher levels of satisfaction and market competitive advantages. On the other hand, one of the main industries worldwide is the coffee industry. Indeed, coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world. Therefore, this research addresses the optimization of the total tardiness in the scheduling of jobs in parallel machines for a case study in a coffee roaster. This is an NP-hard problem where each job requires the roasting process and, in addition, has an associated delivery time. Each job's processing time depends on the machine that is designated and not all machines can run all jobs. We present the mathematical model to describe the problem using mixed integer linear programming and then it is implemented in Python. Additionally, a mate heuristic model based on the ATC heuristic is proposed in order to reduce the computation time and to reach solutions close to the optimum. This model was evaluated with one thousand instances of real data from the roasting process. The Gurobi optimizer was used to solve the problem. The exact method shows high computational times, so we proposed to first perform the sequencing of jobs and then assign them to the machines by means of a simplified mathematical model. By using the proposed mate heuristic model, an average reduction of 53.98% of the execution time is achieved and with respect to the solution delay, this model achieves a median of 0.0% with respect to the optimum. An important part of the structural design process is to decrease the effect of vibration in buildings, particularly those that may be subject to seismic excitation. Although research in the field of structural control has been made since the early 1900s, the complexity and dimensions of civil structures make this problem particularly difficult to solve due to the high demand for control effort and many other associated limitations. This paper analyzes the performance of a novel passive control system that can be used for vibration control in civil structures subjected to base excitation. This control device is called Tuned Inerter Damper (TID), which overcomes the limitation of classic passive devices that are efficient in a narrow frequency band for which they are tuned, a situation that is inconvenient since earthquakes exhibit a very diverse frequency content on most occasions. Besides, this study employs a metaheuristic optimization approach based on the differential evolution method (DE) combined with an elastic time-history dynamic analysis, through which the vibration control focuses on two individual objectives: first, minimizing the maximum horizontal displacement; and second, minimizing the root mean square (RMS) response of displacements. A 12-story building equipped with a novel arrangement of the TID, and subjected to multiple seismic excitations is studied to verify the effectiveness of the device. The results show a significant enhancement in the dynamic response when the arrangement presented in this work is used, and considerably better than an equivalent TMD. Therefore, TID represents a potentially attractive alternative to traditional passive control techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The optimal design of technologies for the production of combined assortments, constitutes a profitable alternative for the development of the cultivation of Manihot esculenta Crantz (cassava) and its industrializable products. Objective: To develop the economic optimization for the design of a combined assortment plant of Manihot esculeta Crantz by semi-mechanized way. Materials and Methods: A hybrid semi-mechanized scheme was devised for the combined production of starch, cassava and flour. A second order extreme vertex design (EVD) was generated for the distribution of cassava in the three productions, and the quadratic models obtained for profit (G), net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and discounted payback period (DRP) were optimized. For the evaluation of the indicators, the design of the basic equipment and the material and energy balances were developed. Results and Discussion: The multipurpose semi-mechanized technology uses the same initial stages for the three processes and a common pneumatic drying for the starch and flour processes. The optimal operating parameters correspond to a profit of 236 882 USD/year, a NPV of 1 242 730 USD, an IRR of 33.10 % and a DRP of 3.97 years, and are achieved for a distribution of 60 % for starch, 10 % for cassava and 30 % for flour. Conclusions: With the raw material distribution that optimizes economic and profitability indicators, production feasibility is guaranteed with energetic and environmental compatibility. SIMULATED annealing , *METAHEURISTIC algorithms , *MATHEMATICAL models - Abstract
Introduction/purpose: Simulated annealing is a powerful technique widely used in optimization problems. One critical aspect of using simulated annealing effectively is a proper and optimal adjustment of its parameters. This paper presents a novel approach to efficiently adjust the parameters of simulated annealing to enhance its performance and convergence speed. Methods: Since the simulated algorithm is inspired by the cooling Metropolis process, the basic idea is to simulate and analyze this process using a mathematical model. The proposed work tends to properly imitate the Metropolis cooling process in the algorithmic field. By intelligently adjusting the temperature schedule, temperature reduction and cooling rate, the algorithm optimizes the balance between exploration and exploitation, leading to improved convergence and higher-quality solutions. Results: To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, it was applied first on a chosen sample function to be minimized, and then on some usual known optimization functions. The results demonstrate that our approach, called Optimal Adjusting of Simulated Annealing parameters (OASA), achieves superior performance compared to traditional static parameter settings and other existing approaches, showing how to well adjust the parameters of the simulated annealing algorithm to improve its efficiency in terms of solution quality and processing time. Conclusion: Adjusting the algorithm parameters could have a significant contribution in the optimization field even for other metaheuristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
