5. Oregon State University Teachers Educating All Multilingual Students: Integrating Language Acquisition and Improving Outcomes for English Learner Students

Abstract

Teachers Educating All Multilingual Students (TEAMS) is a teacher professional development program at Oregon State University that culminates in an English for speakers of other languages endorsement and/or a dual language specialization. TEAMS is partially funded through an Office of English Language Acquisition National Professional Development grant from the U.S. Department of Education, and participants receive scholarships to cover tuition. This study explores whether TEAMS professional development had an impact on the academic outcomes of English learner students whose teachers participated in TEAMS. The study authors used a two-step matching procedure to identify a group of comparison teachers in TEAMS school districts who appeared likely to enroll in TEAMS. They then selected a subset of students who had statistically indistinguishable demographic characteristics, program enrollment, and academic achievement from TEAMS students. Due to complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic, reliable assessment data were only available for the academic year 2018/19. The study found that teachers' participation in TEAMS positively impacted English learner students' English language arts assessment outcomes. English language arts testing scores of English learner students taught by TEAMS teachers were 0.348 standard deviations higher than those of comparison students taught by comparison teachers. This difference is statistically significant and of moderate size, representing a 13.6 percentile point increase for an average English learner student. For nearly three decades, primarily hatchery-origin (HOR) spring Chinook salmon have been released above Cougar Dam on the South Fork McKenzie River to restore ecosystem functions and access to historically productive spawning grounds above the dam (NMFS 2008). Since 2010, natural- origin (NOR) salmon have also been released above the dam. Genetic parentage analysis has been used to evaluate this reintroduction effort (Banks et al. 2013; Banks et al. 2014; Sard et al. 2015; Banks et al. 2016; Sard et al. 2016b). Here, we extend the previous research by evaluating Chinook salmon released above the dam from 2010 – 2017 and their potential offspring sampled in the South Fork McKenzie River from 2016 – 2020. We provide genetic and demographic inferences into the parental cohorts above Cougar Dam from 2007 – 2015, and their offspring that returned from 2010 – 2020. Abstract

The removal of organophosphorus (OP) herbicides from water has been studied using adsorptive removal, chemical oxidation, electrooxidation, enzymatic degradation, and photodegradation. The OP herbicide glyphosate (GP) is one of the most used herbicides worldwide, leading to excess GP in wastewater and soil. GP is commonly broken down in environmental conditions to compounds such as aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) or sarcosine, with AMPA having a longer half-life and similar toxicity to GP. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent materials for purifying OP herbicides from water due to their ability to combine adsorption and photoactivity within one material. Herein, we report the use of a robust Zr-based MOF with a meta-carborane carboxylate ligand (mCB-MOF-2) to examine the adsorption and photodegradation of GP. The maximum adsorption capacity of mCB-MOF-2 for GP was determined to be 11.4 mmol/g. Non-covalent intermolecular forces between the carborane-based ligand and GP within the micropores of mCB-MOF-2 are thought to be responsible for strong binding affinity and capture of GP. After 24 h of irradiation with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light, mCB-MOF-2 selectively converts 69% of GP to sarcosine and orthophosphate, following the C-P lyase enzymatic pathway and biomimetically photodegrading GP. Circumventing the production of AMPA is desirable, as it has a longer half-life and similar toxicity to GP. The exceptional adsorption capacity of GP by mCB-MOF-2 and its biomimetic photodegradation to non-toxic sarcosine make it a promising material for removing OP herbicides from water.

Prospecting influences the decision of where to breed and has consequences on fitness and lifetime reproductive success. By analysing movements of 31 satellite- and GPS-tracked gull and tern populations belonging to 14 species in Europe and North America, we examined the occurrence and factors explaining prospecting by actively breeding birds. Prospecting in active breeders occurred in 85.7% of studied species, across 61.3% of sampled populations. Prospecting was more common in populations with frequent inter-annual changes of breeding sites and among females. These results contradict theoretical models which predict that prospecting is expected to evolve in relatively predictable and stable environments. More long-term tracking studies are needed to identify factors affecting patterns of prospecting in different environments and understand the consequences of prospecting on fitness at the individual and population level.

Abstract

Spaceflight presents a multifaceted environment for plants, combining the effects on growth of many stressors and factors including altered gravity, the influence of experiment hardware, and increased radiation exposure. To help understand the plant response to this complex suite of factors this study compared transcriptomic analysis of 15 Arabidopsis thaliana spaceflight experiments deposited in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s GeneLab data repository. These data were reanalyzed for genes showing significant differential expression in spaceflight versus ground controls using a single common computational pipeline for either the microarray or the RNA-seq datasets. Such a standardized approach to analysis should greatly increase the robustness of comparisons made between datasets. This analysis was coupled with extensive cross-referencing to a curated matrix of metadata associated with these experiments. Our study reveals that factors such as analysis type (i.e., microarray versus RNA-seq) or environmental and hardware conditions have important confounding effects on comparisons seeking to define plant reactions to spaceflight. The metadata matrix allows selection of studies with high similarity scores, i.e., that share multiple elements of experimental design, such as plant age or flight hardware. Comparisons between these studies then helps reduce the complexity in drawing conclusions arising from comparisons made between experiments with very different designs.

Abstract

Barley malt is critical for the malting, brewing, and distilling industries, as it is one of the main ingredients of beer and some types of spirits. There is growing evidence that barley genotype - via malt - can impact the flavors of beers and spirits. However, information on the barley genes involved in these flavors is lacking. Therefore, we used quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping of malt quality traits, beer sensory descriptors and metabolic compounds on a biparental population of doubled haploids derived from the cross of the cultivars Golden Promise and Full Pint. Putative candidate genes for QTLs were identified by alignment with the reference barley genome sequence. There were thirty-seven QTLs across all chromosomes except 4H, with three QTL clusters located on 3H (1 cluster) and 5H (2 clusters: mid-5H and end-5H). Those “hotspots” contained QTLs for multiple phenotypes. Several candidate genes that regulate plant metabolism were identified within the QTLs and included HvAlaAT, HvDep1, HvMKK3, HvGA20ox1 and HvGA20ox2. These genes are involved in seed dormancy and plant height. Alleles at these loci, and perhaps at physically linked loci, can have key downstream effects on malting quality, beer flavor, and abundance of volatile metabolites.

Abstract

The recent commercialization of unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) has facilitated their incorporation into a variety of ecological studies. While UAVs are able to provide accurate visual data of marine species from an aerial perspective, these devices have some limitations that make measuring marine animals below the surface challenging. Many marine organisms are often visible from the air, but are deeper in the water column, and current methods cannot measure animals below the surface. Here, we developed and tested a stereo-video camera (SVC) system that was mounted onto a commercially-available UAV. We used the SVC-UAV to conduct remote body-size measurements for two marine species: the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum). When comparing SVC measurements to those taken by hand, the SVC-UAV had a mean absolute error (MAE) of 4.44 cm (n = 6; mean percent error (MPE) = 10.6%) for green sea turtles and 7.16 cm absolute error (n = 1; PE = 3.6%) for the nurse shark. Using a linear model, we estimated the slope of the SVC versus hand measurements for green sea turtles to be 1.085 (±0.099 SE), and accounting for the standard error, a measurement bias was not apparent. Using model selection, based on a global model predicting MAE from animal distance to the SVC and body size, the top ranked model was the intercept-only model. This indicates that neither animal distance nor body size strongly influenced measurement error. Incorporating SVC systems into UAVs can allow for relatively accurate measurements of near surface-dwelling marine species. To our knowledge, there is no other stand-alone SVC for UAVs available that offers similar accuracy and utility

Abstract

Seagrasses can form mutualisms with their microbiomes that facilitate the exchange of energy sources, nutrients, and hormones and ultimately impact plant stress resistance. Little is known about community succession within the belowground seagrass microbiome after disturbance and its potential role in the plant's recovery after transplantation. We transplanted Zostera marina shoots with and without an intact rhizosphere and cultivated plants for 4 weeks while characterizing microbiome recovery and effects on plant traits. Rhizosphere and root microbiomes were compositionally distinct, likely representing discrete microbial niches. Furthermore, microbiomes of washed transplants were initially different from those of sod transplants and recovered to resemble an undisturbed state within 14 days. Conspicuously, changes in the microbial communities of washed transplants corresponded with changes in the rhizosphere sediment mass and root biomass, highlighting the strength and responsive nature of the relationship between plants, their microbiome, and the environment. Potential mutualistic microbes that were enriched over time include those that function in the cycling and turnover of sulfur, nitrogen, and plant-derived carbon in the rhizosphere environment. These findings highlight the importance and resilience of the seagrass microbiome after disturbance. Consideration of the microbiome will have meaningful implications for habitat restoration practices.IMPORTANCE Seagrasses are important coastal species that are declining globally, and transplantation can be used to combat these declines.
