This article presents validation and conformity testing of the Sentinel-3 Ocean Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) green instantaneous fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) and OLCI terrestrial chlorophyll index (OTCI) canopy chlorophyll content (CCC) products with fiducial reference measurements (FRM) collected in 2018 and 2021 over two sites (Las Tiesas—Barrax, Spain, and Wytham Woods, UK) in the context of the European Space Agency (ESA) Fiducial Reference Measurement for Vegetation (FRM4Veg) initiative. Following metrological principles, an end-to-end uncertainty evaluation framework developed in the project is used to account for the uncertainty of reference data based on a two-stage validation approach. The process involves quantifying uncertainties at the elementary sampling unit (ESU) level and incorporating these uncertainties in the upscaling procedures using orthogonal distance regression (ODR) between FRM and vegetation indices derived from Sentinel-2 data. Uncertainties in the Sentinel-2 data are also accounted for. FRM-based high spatial resolution reference maps and their uncertainties were aggregated to OLCI's native spatial resolution using its apparent point spread function (PSF). The Sentinel-3 mission requirements, which give an uncertainty of 5% (goal) and 10% (threshold), were considered for conformity testing. GIFAPAR validation results revealed correlations > 0.95, RMSD ~0.1, and a slight negative bias (~−0.06) for both sites. This bias could be partly explained by the differences in the FAPAR definitions between the satellite product and the FRM-based reference. For the OTCI-based CCC, leave-one-out cross-validation demonstrated correlations > 0.8 and RMSDcv ~0.28 g·m−2. Despite the encouraging validation results, conclusive conformity with the strict mission requirements was low, with most cases providing inconclusive results (driven by large uncertainties in the satellite products as well as by the uncertainties in the upscaling approach). It is recommended that mission requirements for bio-geophysical products are reviewed, at least at the threshold level. It is also suggested that the large uncertainties associated with the two-stage validation approach may be avoided by directly comparing with spatially representative FRM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detailed 3D quantification of tree structure plays a crucial role in understanding tree‐ and plot‐level biophysical processes. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has led to a revolution in tree structural measurements and its 3D data are increasingly becoming publicly available. Yet, calculating structural metrics from LiDAR data can often be complex and time‐consuming and potentially requires expert knowledge.We present the R package Individual Tree Structural Metrics (ITSMe), a toolbox that works with LiDAR tree point clouds and quantitative structure models (QSMs) derived from LiDAR point clouds to obtain individual tree structural metrics. It serves as a robust synthesis framework for researchers who want to readily obtain structural information from 3D data of individual trees.The package includes functions to determine basic structural metrics (tree height, diameter at breast height, diameter above buttresses, projected crown area, 3D alpha crown volume) from individual tree point clouds, as well as more complex structural metrics (individual tree component volumes, branch angle‐, radius‐ and length‐related metrics) from QSMs.The ITSMe package is an open‐source package hosted on GitHub that will make the use of 3D data more straightforward and transparent for a range of end‐users interested in exploiting tree structure information. Terrestrial Biosphere Modeling (TBM) is an invaluable approach for studying plant-atmosphere interactions at multiple spatial and temporal scales, as well as the global change impacts on ecosystems. Yet, TBM projections suffer from large uncertainties that limit their usefulness. A large part of this uncertainty arises from the empirical allometric (size-tomass) relationships that are used to represent forest structure in TBMs. Forest structure actually drives a large part of TBM uncertainty as it regulates key processes such as the transfer of carbon, energy, and water between the land and atmosphere, but remains challenging to measure and reliably represent. The poor representation of forest structure in TBMs results in models that are able to reproduce observed land fluxes, but which fail to realistically represent carbon pools, forest composition, and demography. Recent advances in Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) techniques offer a huge opportunity to capture the three-dimensional structure of the ecosystem and transfer this information to TBMs in order to increase their accuracy. In this study, we quantified the impacts of integrating structural observations of individual trees (namely tree height, leaf area, woody biomass, and crown area) derived from TLS into the state-of-the-art Ecosystem Demography model (ED2.2) at a temperate forest site. We assessed the relative model sensitivity to initial conditions, allometric parameters, and canopy representation by changing them in turn from default configurations to site-specific, TLS-derived values. We show that forest demography and productivity as modelled by ED2.2 are sensitive to the imposed initial state, the model structural parameters, and the way canopy is represented. In particular, we show that: 1) the imposed openness of the canopy dramatically influenced the potential vegetation, the optimal ecosystem leaf area, and the vertical distribution of light in the forest, as simulated by ED2.2; 2) TLS-derived allometric parameters increased simulated leaf area index and aboveground biomass by 57 and 75 %, respectively; 3) the choice of model structure and allometric coefficient both significantly impacted the optimal set of parameters necessary to reproduce eddy covariance flux data. Digital hemispherical photography is a simple, non-destructive method for estimating canopy biophysical parameters for ecological applications and validation of remote sensing products. Determination of optimum and repeatable acquisition procedures is well documented in the literature but so far this has not focused on evaluating the levelling procedure used to align the camera. In this paper, the standard recommendation that tripod levelling is a necessity is tested by comparing it with a hand-levelled procedure. The results show that the average difference between the two procedures is < 2% for effective plant area index and < 1% for gap fraction at the VALERI plot scale, which generally falls within the variance. Users implementing the hand-levelled technique can expect large reductions in data acquisition time, allowing many more samples to be collected without compromising the overall quality of the data retrieved.
