Abstract

The following question was asked by Prendiville: given an $r$-colouring of the interval $\{2, \dotsc, N\}$, what is the minimum number of monochromatic solutions of the equation $xy = z$? For $r=2$, we show that there are always asymptotically at least $(1/2\sqrt{2}) N^{1/2} \log N$ monochromatic solutions, and that the leading constant is sharp. For $r=3$ and $r=4$ we obtain tight results up to a multiplicative logarithmic factor. We also provide bounds for more colours and other multiplicative equations., Comment: 25 pages

Abstract

We prove that product-free sets of the free group over a finite alphabet have maximum density $1/2$ with respect to the natural measure that assigns total weight one to each set of irreducible words of a given size. This confirms a conjecture of Leader, Letzter, Narayanan and Walters. In more general terms, we actually prove that strongly $k$-product-free sets have maximum density $1/k$ in terms of the said measure., Comment: 10 pages. 4. Extremal Sidon sets are Fourier uniform, with applications to partition regularity

Abstract

Generalising results of Erd\H{o}s-Freud and Lindstr\"om, we prove that the largest Sidon subset of a bounded interval of integers is equidistributed in Bohr neighbourhoods. We establish this by showing that extremal Sidon sets are Fourier-pseudorandom, in that they have no large non-trivial Fourier coefficients. As a further application we deduce that, for any partition regular equation in five or more variables, every finite colouring of an extremal Sidon set has a monochromatic solution.

Abstract

The global lockdown to mitigate COVID-19 pandemic health risks has altered human interactions with nature. Here, we report immediate impacts of changes in human activities on wildlife and environmental threats during the early lockdown months of 2020, based on 877 qualitative reports and 332 quantitative assessments from 89 different studies. Hundreds of reports of unusual species observations from around the world suggest that animals quickly responded to the reductions in human presence. However, negative effects of lockdown on conservation also emerged, as confinement resulted in some park officials being unable to perform conservation, restoration and enforcement tasks, resulting in local increases in illegal activities such as hunting. Overall, there is a complex mixture of positive and negative effects of the pandemic lockdown on nature, all of which have the potential to lead to cascading responses which in turn impact wildlife and nature conservation. While the net effect of the lockdown will need to be assessed over years as data becomes available and persistent effects emerge, immediate responses were detected across the world. Thus, initial qualitative and quantitative data arising from this serendipitous global quasi-experimental perturbation highlights the dual role that humans play in threatening and protecting species and ecosystems. Pathways to favorably tilt this delicate balance include reducing impacts and increasing conservation effectiveness.

Abstract

The need to better understand the trade-offs between food production, trade and consumption; social and environmental impacts of food systems and food health requirements remains a challenge. Additionally, there is an urgency to transform the food system to reach the dietary patterns required to address the current diet-environment-health trilemma. Transformative changes are required to deal with the food system crisis. To this end, it is necessary to strengthen the links in the food chain and establish solid alliances between production and consumption with the objective of designing alternative food systems. In this context, the Agroecosystems History Laboratory of Pablo de Olavide University and Alimentta-Think tank for the transition of agrifood systems, organised the IX International Congress of Agroecology between the 19th and the 23rd of January, 2023, in Seville (Spain). Its theme was “Cultivating local agroecological-based food systems”. Within the Congress, a hybrid panel of “Sowing initiatives with transformative potential in the fishing sector” was held to bring together initiatives with the capacity to generate transformative changes and enhance the value of fisheries in the field of agroecology and food sovereignty. The panel included communications related to seafood consumption, food sovereignty, co-management, inequalities, collaborative experiences, waste management, transformation processing and commercialisation. As a conclusion of the panel, a new perspective is required to redesign the agrifood systems and promote desirable multiple transformative changes that help to establish analytical and political action strategies in the field of fisheries as a food system.

21. For not losing the Home. Dispossession Narratives in the cinema during Franco regime (1957-1969)

Abstract

During the Franco regime, many films reflected the problem of housing, some of them very relevant in the field of Spanish cinematography. Depending on their ideological content, they suffered different ups and downs with the Board of Evaluation and Censorship, the body that determined the quality of film works and decided on the final version of the script. This article proposes to group a series of titles into two different narratives of dispossession, as well as to analyze their relationship with the ideological apparatus of the state. The time frame runs from 1957 to 1969 and is defined by the films El inquilino and Un millón en la basura. The aim is to demonstrate the conditions and modifications that critical films of the time had to face, as well as the existence of a cinema aligned with the official speech of housing policies., Durante el franquismo fueron filmadas muchas películas que reflejaban la problemática de la vivienda, algunas de ellas muy relevantes en el ámbito de la cinematografía española. En función de su contenido ideológico sufrieron diferentes avatares con la Junta de Evaluación y Censura, el organismo que determinaba la calidad de las obras fílmicas y decidía la versión final del guion. Este artículo propone agrupar una serie de títulos en dos narrativas de desposesión distintas, así como analizar su relación con el aparato ideológico del estado. El marco temporal va desde 1957 hasta 1969 y lo delimitan las películas El inquilino y Un millón en la basura. Se pretenden demostrar los condicionamientos y modificaciones que tuvieron que enfrentar las películas críticas de la época, así como también la existencia de un cine alineado con el relato oficial sobre políticas de vivienda.

L’aplicació s’ha de realitzar en l’entorn LabVIEW. L’elecció d’aquest programa ve condicionada per l’actualització del mòdul de monitorització de la planta que s’està desenvolupant en aquest mateix entorn

Abstract

The western Mediterranean basin is a high marine biodiversity area under severe pressure by changing climate and intense human activities. Beyond national jurisdictions, international institutions such as the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) work towards canalizing a regional consensus that fishing practices should evolve to better support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this context, Fisheries Restricted Areas (FRA) are proposed as effective management measures to contribute towards increasing fisheries sustainability in the region that can be considered, under some conditions, as Nature-based Solutions (NbS); however, how to operationalize their framework remains unclear. In this study, based on combined ecological and fisheries criteria, we identify and prioritize six potential priority areas for management (PAMs) in the western Mediterranean Sea. They are specifically aimed at the protection and recovery of Essential Fish Habitats and the conservation of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems, whilst requiring limited adaptation of fisheries practices due to their relative low fishing pressure. We compare the identified areas to those that are currently under protection, and to areas that have been proposed for protection at the GFCM. Our results show that the FRAs and other spatial management measures introduced in the last years marginally contribute to the protection PAMs in the western Mediterranean region. However, the adoption of FRAs that are currently under discussion at the GFCM could contribute significantly to improve the situation. FRAs could also contribute to operationalize NbS in the western Mediterranean Sea when properly designed and implemented. • This study identifies six priority areas for management (PAMs) in the western Mediterranean Sea. • PAMs are based on combined ecological and fisheries criteria, with multiple ecological values and relative low trawling. • Current spatial management measures implemented have little contribution on PAMs protection. • Fisheries Restricted Areas discussed at the GFCM can significantly increase the protection level of high priority PAMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Per aquest estudi s'han seleccionat quatre conques sedimentàries que destaquen de forma significativa per la seva anoxicitat, així com, per haver experimentat una important sulfato- reducció. Les conques escollides són: Orce, Ribesalbes, Mequinensa i Organyà.La conca d'Orce és d'origen lacustre i de tipus endorreica, data del Plio-Plistocè (1-5 milions d'anys) i es localitza al nord de la província de Granada. El seu interès rau en el descobriment d'importants jaciments paleontològics amb restes antropogèniques.La conca de Ribesalbes també és lacustre i endorreica, pertany al Miocè mitjà (Serraval·là, de 12 a 13 milions d'anys) i es situa a l'oest de la província de Castelló. A principis d'aquest segle s'hi van explotar les pissarres bituminoses mitjançant tècniques de piròlisi.La conca de Mequinensa igualment és d'origen lacustre i de caràcter endorreica, pertany a l'Oligocè superior (Catià, al voltant dels 30 milions d'anys) i es localitza al sud del Sistema dels Monegros, a la província de Lleida. La importància d'aquesta conca es deu a l'explotació de lignits molt rics en sofre.La conca d'Organyà és d'origen marí i data del Cretaci inferior (més de 100 milions d'anys). Es situa a la província de Lleida, a la comarca de l'Alt Urgell. Els materials que formen aquesta conca constitueixen una roca mare de petroli.Els objectius d'aquest treball són:1. L'anàlisi dels biomarcadors per a la determinació de l'origen de les aportacions de la matèria orgànica que reberen les conques estudiades, caracteritzant-ne les contribucions més significatives.2. La descripció de les condicions paleoambientals que donaren lloc a aquests dipòsits sedimentaris.3. L'avaluació de la maduresa de la matèria orgànica.La tesi comença amb una introducció on es descriu la singularitat de cada conca, es continua amb les descripcions geològiques i petrogràfiques, tot localitzant les mostres estudiades a la columna estratigràfica. Després, es mostra l'anàlisi elemental de la matèria orgànica, per prosseguir amb la descripció dels biomarcadors apolars i polars: en primer lloc es descriuen els compostos acíclics, lineals i ramificats, tot començant pels compostos hidrocarbonats, després els oxigenats i finalment els sofrats; en segon lloc, els biomarcadors cíclics, començant pels diterpenoides i continuant amb els triterpenoides, amb especial rellevància dels esteroides i els hopanoides, i finalment, els oleanoides, ursanoides i lupanoides. Cal destacar la identificació de més d'una vintena de nous biomarcadors identificats per primera vegada en aquesta tesi. La descripció de les conques finalitza amb les conclusions sobre els aports de la matèria orgànica, l'ambient deposicional i la maduresa. The aim of this thesis is the study and characterization of the soluble organic matter in sulphur rich geological basins. The previous studies carried out on reducing sedimentary basins show the significant presence of organic geochemical biomarkers with sulphur, which are very relevant for the description of the paleo-environment conditions of the sedimentation, since they reflect the presence of biological compounds very well preserved.For this study four sedimentary basins of Spain have been selected due to their anoxicity and also for having suffered an important sulphate-reduction process. The selected basins are: Orce, Ribesalbes, Mequinensa and Organyà.The basin of Orce is of lacustrine origin, it belongs to the Plio-Pleistocene period (1 to 5 million years) and it is located to the north of the province of Granada. Its interest comes from the fact that there are important palaeontology deposits with anthropogenic rests.The basin of Ribesalbes also is also of type lacustrine and belongs to the Miocene period (Serravalià, 12 to 13 million years). It is located to the west of the province of Castellon. At the beginning of XX century the bituminises shales were extracted in order to obtain oil with techniques of pyrolisis.The basin of Mequinensa is also of lacustrine origin and belongs to the upper Oligocene period (Catià from around 30 million years) and is located to the south System of the Monegros, in the province of Lleida. The importance of this basin is due to the high sulphur content of the lignite that is formed in this place.The basin of Organyà is of marine origin and dates from the lower Cretaceous (more than 100 million years). It is located in the province of Lleida, in the region of the Alt Urgell. The materials that form this basin constitute a oil source rock.The items of this work are:1. The analysis of biomarkers for the determination of the origin of the contribution of the matter organic.2. The description of the paleoenvironmetal conditions that gave rise to these sedimentations deposits.3. The evaluation of the maturity of the organic matter.The thesis is divided into nine chapters: The study begins with a general geological description to go on with the analysis of the paleoconditions of the environmental deposition that favour the preservation of the organic matter. Subsequently, after that, there is an accurate geochemical description of each basin. The results of this work show that the Orce basin is characterized by type I querogen and, the Ribesalbes basin is of type I-S kerogen, the Organyà basin is of type II-S and the Mequinensa basin is of type III-S querogen. The study ends with the conclusions on the contributions of the organic matter, the depositional environment and the maturity. In the case of the Organyà basin only non polar fractions have been studied, due to the little presence of polar compounds, attributed to the high maturity of the organic matter. Finally, there is also a compilation of biomarkers identified for the first time in this thesis, indicating in its case if their biological precursors.
