Abstract

Textbook Question Answering is a complex task in the intersection of Machine Comprehension and Visual Question Answering that requires reasoning with multimodal information from text and diagrams. For the first time, this paper taps on the potential of transformer language models and bottom-up and top-down attention to tackle the language and visual understanding challenges this task entails. Rather than training a language-visual transformer from scratch we rely on pre-trained transformers, fine-tuning and ensembling. We add bottom-up and top-down attention to identify regions of interest corresponding to diagram constituents and their relationships, improving the selection of relevant visual information for each question and answer options. Our system ISAAQ reports unprecedented success in all TQA question types, with accuracies of 81.36%, 71.11% and 55.12% on true/false, text-only and diagram multiple choice questions. ISAAQ also demonstrates its broad applicability, obtaining state-of-the-art results in other demanding datasets., Comment: Accepted for publication as a long paper in EMNLP2020

13. Look, Read and Enrich. Learning from Scientific Figures and their Captions

Abstract

Compared to natural images, understanding scientific figures is particularly hard for machines. However, there is a valuable source of information in scientific literature that until now has remained untapped: the correspondence between a figure and its caption. In this paper we investigate what can be learnt by looking at a large number of figures and reading their captions, and introduce a figure-caption correspondence learning task that makes use of our observations. Training visual and language networks without supervision other than pairs of unconstrained figures and captions is shown to successfully solve this task. We also show that transferring lexical and semantic knowledge from a knowledge graph significantly enriches the resulting features. Finally, we demonstrate the positive impact of such features in other tasks involving scientific text and figures, like multi-modal classification and machine comprehension for question answering, outperforming supervised baselines and ad-hoc approaches., Comment: Accepted in the 10th International Conference on Knowledge capture (K-CAP 2019)

Abstract

Although several management options are adopted to redirect post-fire forest ecosystems towards less vulnerable and more resilient and functional communities, little is known about the interactions among tree stand age, pre-fire forest management, and slope aspects, and their consequences for plant species and soil properties recovery immediately after severe wildfires. To address this knowledge need, this study evaluates the post-fire changes in species richness and diversity (with a specific focus on regeneration mechanisms and life forms) of regenerating plants as well as the main physico-chemical and biological properties of burned soils with the reciprocal relations. Plant cover and diversity, and many soil properties have been monitored in forests of southeast Spain with mature, middle and young stands, presence of pre-fire treatments or not, and north and south hillslopes about one year after the fire. To this aim, the reciprocal relationships among soil properties and plants were evaluated adopting a combination of statistical techniques (PERMANOVA, Non-metric Multi-Dimensional Scaling, Distance-based Linear Modelling, Distance-based Redundancy Analysis, and Spearman correlation analysis). The damage to soil and vegetation was so high that both plants and pre-fire soil properties slowly recovered. Only a few life forms of vegetation (geophytes and herbaceous chamaephytes) were influenced by the stand age. If combined with soil aspect, stand age resulted in significantly lower germinating species in mature stands and lower resprouters in young stands, both on south hillslopes. Plant diversity was high, and the post-fire regeneration did not change the species richness and evenness. The post-fire changes in soil properties were limited, and only slight small differences in pH and betaglucosidase among stands of different age were found. Abstract

Research is advancing regarding techniques that are based on natural products developed using the plants. Extracellular DNA (eDNA) is a potential alternative that can be used as active material in agronomy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of self-eDNA using fertigation in lettuce plants as a biostimulant. Five fertigation treatments were used: 0 (control), 0.025, 0.25, 2.5 and 25 mg self-eDNA per plant. Fertigation was monitored through drainage fraction, pH and EC. The benefits of fertigation were evaluated using water, nitrate and potassium uptake, and growth. There was a significant correlation between fertigation uptake and growth. The highest correlation (R2 = 0.96) occurred between water uptake and growth. There was a quadratic fit between uptake and production parameters and the dose of self-eDNA applied. Mean drainage values showed no significant differences between treatments for EC and pH. The highest values of fertigation uptake (water, nitrate and potassium) and growth were observed at doses of 0.25 and 2.5 mg self-eDNA. Doses lower than 0.25 decreased by 21.3%, while doses higher than 2.5 decreased by 16.4%. Self-eDNA had beneficial effects as a biostimulant and potentially had an appropriate cost–benefit ratio. Abstract

Background: the evaluation of learning involves the control and assessment of knowledge, skills and habits.Objective: to show the results of the ordinary final exam in the subject General Pharmacology, after the application of the teaching guides.Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive research was carried out at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences, in the academic year 2020-2021, we worked with the enrollment of the referred course and the results were compared with those of the 2019-2020 academic year. Theoretical, empirical, and mathematical methods were used.Results: with the use of the guides, promotion increased by 3.56%, a highly significant result. Ratings of 5 increased by 17.9% and ratings of 3 and 2 decreased by 9.4% and 3.6% respectively. Considering the content and type of questions, the topic Prescription and rational use of drugs, evaluated with a question such as completing the correct answer, improved the average of the grades by 0.59, followed by the content of the topics Receptor Theory and System autonomic nervous system, where this indicator increased by 0.39, all in the 2020-2021 academic year.Conclusions: the results in the ordinary final exam in General Pharmacology, after the use of the teaching guides, considerably improved promotion in the subject., Fundamento: la evaluación del aprendizaje implica el control y la valoración de los conocimientos, habilidades y hábitos.Objetivo: mostrar los resultados del examen final ordinario en la asignatura Farmacología General, después de la aplicación de las guías didácticas.Métodos: se realizó una investigación descriptiva transversal en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara, en el periodo 2020-2021, se trabajó con la matrícula del curso referido y se compararon los resultados con los del curso 2019 -2020. Se utilizaron métodos teóricos, empíricos, y matemáticos.Resultados: con el uso de las guías, la promoción aumentó en un 3,56 %, resultado altamente significativo. Las calificaciones de 5 aumentaron un 17,9 % y las de 3 y 2 disminuyeron un 9,4 % y 3,6 % respectivamente. Considerando el contenido y tipo de preguntas, el tema Prescripción y uso racional de fármacos, evaluado con una pregunta de tipo completar la respuesta correcta, mejoró la media de las calificaciones en 0,59, seguido del contenido de los temas Teoría de receptores y Sistema nervioso autónomo, donde este indicador aumentó un 0,39, todos en el curso 2020-2021.Conclusiones: los resultados en el examen final ordinario en Farmacología General, posteriores al uso de las guías didácticas, mejoraron considerablemente la promoción en la asignatura.

Abstract

The Ontology for Avida (OntoAvida) aims to develop an integrated vocabulary for the description of Avida, the most widely used computational approach for performing experimental evolution using digital organisms-self-replicating computer programs that evolve within a user-defined computational environment. The lack of a clearly defined vocabulary makes some biologists feel reluctant to embrace the field of digital evolution. This integrated framework empowers biologists by equipping them with the necessary tools to explore and analyze the field of digital evolution more effectively. By leveraging the vocabulary of Avida, researchers can gain deeper insights into the evolutionary processes and dynamics of digital organisms. In addition, OntoAvida allows researchers to make inference based on certain rules and constraints, facilitate the reproducibility of in silico evolution experiments and trace the provenance of the data stored in avidaDB-an RDF database containing the genomes, transcriptomes, and phenotypes of more than a million digital organisms. OntoAvida is part of the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontologies (OBO Foundry) and is available at http://www.obofoundry.org/ontology/ontoavida.html .

42. Effects of low-density polyethylene and polyamide microplastics on the microbiological and chemical characteristics of an Andisol.

Abstract

Microplastics (MPs) are a significant threat to soils. However, there is scarce information on the impact of MPs on soil properties, particularly in volcanic ashderived soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of polyamide (PA) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) MPs on the biological and chemical characteristics of an Andisol from central Chile. Twenty-one parameters were evaluated, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorous (AP), available nitrogen (AN), inorganic nitrogen forms (NH4 +, NO2 - and NO3), carbohydrates (CHO), polyphenols (POLs), humic substances, soil basal respiration (SBR) and activities of soil enzymes such as dehydrogenase, ß-glucosidase, phosphatase and urease. For this, a microcosm was set up in clay pots in an incubation chamber at 21°C and 60% soil moisture, with the addition of PA and LDPE at doses of 1% and 3% w/w; a control treatment consisting of microcosm without MPs was also included. After 6 weeks of incubation, PA addition resulted in an increase in TOC and NH4 + by up to 32% and 26%, respectively, and a decrease in NO3 - by 22%. AP decreased by 15%-19% with the addition of PA and LDPE. Similarly, acid phosphatase and ß-glucosidase activities decreased by 15% and 26% with PA and LDPE, respectively. The distance-based linear model (DistLM) was used to analyse relationships in chemical and biological datasets. The analysis revealed that TOC and TP were primary components in the best model for predicting microbiological changes (R2 = .469, AICs = 16.026), indicating that MPs accumulation affects soil carbon cycling and P content. Overall, the results show that MPs addition alters soil chemical and microbiological properties in Andisols, with varying effects depending on the type and dose of MPs, with the highest dose (3%) producing the most marked negative effects. El mismo se ha ido desarrollando gracias a una serie de Jornadas anuales. Este 2023, las XVIII Jornadas CRAI buscan ser, más que el cierre del modelo, sentar las bases para una biblioteca universitaria preparada para el futuro. Preguntamos lo que supone esto a algunos de sus protagonistas.
