Context: Understanding galaxy evolution in dense environments, particularly proto-clusters, is crucial for studying mechanisms driving star formation and quenching. Aims: This study examines how two proto-cluster over-densities at 3 < z < 4 impact star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, and morphology, focusing on quenched galaxies. Methods: We identified proto-cluster over-densities in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) regions of the VANDELS survey. Using spectral energy distribution analysis, Bayesian methods (BEAGLE and BAGPIPES) helped derive best-fit parameters and U-V and V-J rest-frame colours (UVJ), classifying galaxies as quenched or star-forming based on UVJ diagrams and specific star formation rates (sSFR). TNG300 simulations aided interpretation. Results: Two of 13 proto-cluster over-densities host quenched galaxies with red U-V colours, low sSFR, and properties like massive passive galaxies. These quenched members are redder, older, more massive, and more compact. The highest-density peaks at z=3.55 and z=3.43 have dark matter halo masses consistent with proto-clusters and host AGNs, with five and three AGNs, respectively. Compared to field galaxies, these quenched members are in denser environments. TNG300 simulations suggest proto-clusters with quenched galaxies at high redshift evolve to contain more passive galaxies by z=1. Conclusions: The over-densities host massive quenched galaxies and AGNs in their densest peaks. Simulations reveal that sSFR for passive galaxies in proto-clusters was high at z=6, with median mass growth rates of 96% from z=6 to z=3. Conditions for mass assembly likely involve galaxy interactions and high gas accretion in dense environments. Direct numerical simulations of mechanical metamaterials are prohibitively expensive due to the separation of scales between the lattice and the macrostructural size. Hence, multiscale continuum analysis plays a pivotal role in the computational modeling of metastructures at macroscopic scales. In the present work, we assess the continuum limit of mechanical metamaterials via homogenized models derived rigorously from variational methods. It is shown through multiple examples that micropolar-type effective energies, derived naturally from analysis, properly capture the kinematics of discrete lattices in two and three dimensions. Moreover, the convergence of the discrete energy to the continuum limit is shown numerically. As part of our comprehensive, ongoing characterisation of the low-mass end of the main sequence in the Solar neighbourhood, we used the OSIRIS instrument at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias to acquire low- and mid-resolution (R$\approx$300 and R$\approx$2500) optical spectroscopy of 53 late-M and L ultracool dwarfs. Most of these objects are known but poorly investigated and lacking complete kinematics. We measured spectral indices, determined spectral types (six of which are new) and inferred effective temperature and surface gravity from BT-Settl synthetic spectra fits for all objects. We were able to measure radial velocities via line centre fitting and cross correlation for 46 objects, 29 of which lacked previous radial velocity measurements. Using these radial velocities in combination with the latest Gaia DR3 data, we also calculated Galactocentric space velocities. From their kinematics, we identified two candidates outside of the thin disc and four in young stellar kinematic groups. Two further ultracool dwarfs are apparently young field objects: 2MASSW J1246467$+$402715 (L4$\beta$), which has a potential, weak lithium absorption line, and G 196$-$3B (L3$\beta$), which was already known as young due to its well-studied primary companion., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

- Aims: We intended to quantify the impact of stellar multiplicity on the presence and properties of exoplanets. - Methods: We investigated all exoplanet host stars at less than 100 pc using the latest astrometric data from Gaia DR3 and advanced statistical methodologies. We complemented our search for common proper motion and parallax companions with data from the Washington Double Star catalogue and the literature. After excluding a number of systems based on radial velocity data, and membership in clusters and open associations, or with resolved ultracool companions, we kept 215 exoplanet host stars in 212 multiple-star systems. - Results: We found 17 new companions in the systems of 15 known exoplanet host stars, measured precise angular and projected physical separations and position angles for 236 pairs of stars, compiled key parameters for 276 planets in multiple systems, and established a comparison sample comprising 687 single stars with exoplanets. With all of this, we statistically analysed a series of hypothesis regarding planets in multiple stellar systems. Although they are only statistically significant at a 2{\sigma} level, our analysis pointed to several interesting results on the comparison in the mean number of planets in multiple versus single stellar systems and the tendency of high mass planets to be located in closer orbits in multiple systems. We confirm that planets in multiple systems tend to have orbits with larger eccentricities than those in single systems. We report the discovery of five white dwarf + ultracool dwarf systems identified as common proper motion wide binaries in the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars. The discoveries include a white dwarf + L subdwarf binary, VVV 1256-62AB, a gravitationally bound system located 75.6(+1.9/-1.8) pc away with a projected separation of 1375(+35/-33) au. The primary is a cool DC white dwarf with a hydrogen dominated atmosphere, and has a total age of 10.5(+3.3/-2.1) Gyr, based on white dwarf model fitting. The secondary is an L subdwarf with a metallicity of [M/H] = -0.72(+0.08/-0.10) (i.e. [Fe/H] = -0.81+/-0.10) and Teff = 2298(+45/-43) K based on atmospheric model fitting of its optical to near infrared spectrum, and likely has a mass just above the stellar/substellar boundary. The sub-solar metallicity of the L subdwarf and the system's total space velocity of 406 km/s indicates membership in the Galactic halo, and it has a flat eccentric Galactic orbit passing within 1~kpc of the centre of the Milky Way every ~0.4Gyr and extending to 15-31 kpc at apogal. VVV 1256-62B is the first L subdwarf to have a well-constrained age, making it an ideal benchmark of metal-poor ultracool dwarf atmospheres and evolution., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We develop meanfield approximation and numerical quadrature schemes for the evaluation of Angular-Dependent interatomic Potentials (ADPs) for magnesium and magnesium hydrides at finite temperature (thermalization) and arbitrary atomic molar fractions (mixing) within a non-equilibrium statistical mechanical framework and derive local equilibrium relations. We numerically verify and experimentally validate the accuracy and fidelity of the resulting thermalized/mixed ADPs (TADPs) by means of selected numerical tests including free entropy, heat capacity, thermal expansion, molar volumes, equation of state and elastic constants. We show that the local equilibrium properties predicted by TADPs agree closely with those computed directly from ADP by means of Molecular Dynamics (MD)., Comment: 8 figures

We resort to variational methods to evaluate the asymptotic behavior of fine metamaterials as a function of cell size. To zeroth order, the metamaterial behaves as a micropolar continuum with both displacement and rotation degrees of freedom, but exhibits linear-elastic fracture mechanics scaling and therefore no size effect. To higher order, the overall energetics of the metastructure can be characterized explicitly in terms of the solution of the zeroth-order continuum problem by the method of {\Gamma}-expansion. We present explicit expressions of the second-order correction for octet frames. As an application, we evaluate the compliance of double-cantilever octet specimens to second order and use the result to elucidate the dependence of the apparent toughness of the specimen on cell size. The analysis predicts the discreteness of the metamaterial lattice to effectively shield the crack-tip, a mechanism that we term lattice shielding. The theory specifically predicts anti-shielding, i. e., coarser is weaker, in agreement with recent experimental observations.

A method for solving three dimensional discrete dislocation plasticity boundary-value problems using a monopole representation of the dislocations is presented. At each time step, the displacement, strain and stress fields in a finite body are obtained by superposition of infinite body dislocation fields and an image field that enforces the boundary conditions. The three dimensional infinite body fields are obtained by representing dislocations as being comprised of points, termed monopoles, that carry dislocation line and Burgers vector information. The image fields are obtained from a three dimensional linear elastic finite element calculation. The implementation of the coupling of the monopole representation with the finite element method, including the interaction of curved dislocations with free surfaces, is presented in some detail because it differs significantly from an implementation with a line based dislocation representation. Numerical convergence and the modeling of dislocation loop nucleation for large scale computations are investigated. The monopole discrete dislocation plasticity framework is used to investigate the effect of size and initial dislocation density on the torsion of wires with diameters varying over three orders of magnitude. Depending on the initial dislocation source density and the wire diameter, three regimes of torsion-twist response are obtained: (i) for wires with a sufficiently small diameter, plastic deformation is nucleation controlled and is strongly size dependent; (ii) for wires with larger diameters dislocation plasticity is dislocation interaction controlled, with the emergence of geometrically necessary dislocations and dislocation pile-ups playing a key role, and is strongly size dependent; and (iii) for wires with sufficiently large diameters plastic deformation becomes less heterogeneous and the dependence on size is greatly diminished., Comment: Accepted in Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids

When used in bulk applications, mechanical metamaterials set forth a multiscale problem with many orders of magnitude in scale separation between the micro and macro scales. However, mechanical metamaterials fall outside conventional homogenization theory on account of the flexural, or bending, response of their members, including torsion. We show that homogenization theory, based on calculus of variations and notions of Gamma-convergence, can be extended to account for bending. The resulting homogenized metamaterials exhibit intrinsic generalized elasticity in the continuum limit. We illustrate these properties in specific examples including two-dimensional honeycomb and three-dimensional octet-truss metamaterials.

The hydrogen Paschen lines are known activity indicators, but studies of them in M~dwarfs during quiescence are as rare as their reports in flare studies. This situation is mostly caused by a lack of observations, owing to their location in the near-infrared regime, which is covered by few high-resolution spectrographs. We study the Pa$\beta$ line, using a sample of 360 M~dwarfs observed by the CARMENES spectrograph. Descending the spectral sequence of inactive M~stars in quiescence, we find the Pa$\beta$ line to get shallower until about spectral type M3.5 V, after which a slight re-deepening is observed. Looking at the whole sample, for stars with H$\alpha$ in absorption, we find a loose anti-correlation between the (median) pseudo-equivalent widths (pEWs) of H$\alpha$ and Pa$\beta$ for stars of similar effective temperature. Looking instead at time series of individual stars, we often find correlation between pEW(H$\alpha$) and pEW(Pa$\beta$) for stars with H$\alpha$ in emission and an anti-correlation for stars with H$\alpha$ in absorption. Regarding flaring activity, we report the automatic detection of 35 Paschen line flares in 20 stars. Additionally we found visually six faint Paschen line flares in these stars plus 16 faint Paschen line flares in another 12 stars. In strong flares, Paschen lines can be observed up to Pa 14. Moreover, we find that Paschen line emission is almost always coupled to symmetric H$\alpha$ line broadening, which we ascribe to Stark broadening, indicating high pressure in the chromosphere. We report a new computational approach to model hard-soft block copolymers like polyurea as a liquid crystalline polymer to understand their microstructural evolution due to mechanical loading. The resulting microstructure closely resembles the microstructure observed in polyurea. The stress-strain relations in uniaxial compression and tension loading obtained from the model are also in close quantitative agreement with the experimental data for polyurea. We use the model to elucidate the evolution of the hard and the soft domains during loading, which is consistent with the experimental measurements characterizing microstructural evolution in polyurea.

We present a Data-Driven (DD) paradigm that enables molecular dynamics calculations to be performed directly from sampled force-field data such as obtained, e.g., from ab initio calculations, thereby eschewing the conventional step of modeling the data by empirical interatomic potentials entirely. The data required by the DD solvers consists of local atomic configurations and corresponding atomic forces and is, therefore, fundamental, i.e., it is not beholden to any particular model. The resulting DD solvers, including a fully explicit DD-Verlet algorithm, are provably convergent and exhibit robust convergence with respect to the data in selected test cases. We present an example of application to C60 buckminsterfullerenes that showcases the feasibility, range and scope of the DD molecular dynamics paradigm., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

The aim of the project is to identify wide common proper motion companions to a sample of spectroscopically confirmed M and L metal-poor dwarfs (also known as subdwarfs) to investigate the impact of metallicity on the binary fraction of low-mass metal-poor binaries and to improve the determination of their metallicity from the higher-mass binary. We made use of Virtual Observatory tools and large-scale public surveys to look in Gaia for common proper motion companions to a well-defined sample of ultracool subdwarfs with spectral types later than M5 and metallicities below or equal to $-$0.5 dex. We collected low-resolution optical spectroscopy for our best system, which is a binary composed of one sdM1.5 subdwarf and one sdM5.5 subdwarf located at $\sim$1,360 au, and for another two likely systems separated by more than 115,000 au. We confirm one wide companion to an M subdwarf, and infer a multiplicity for M subdwarfs (sdMs) of $1.0_{-1.0}^{+2.0}$% for projected physical separations of up to 743,000 au. We also find four M$-$L systems, three of which are new detections. No colder companion was identified in any of the 219 M and L subdwarfs of the sample, mainly because of limitations on the detection of faint sources with Gaia. We infer a frequency of wide systems for sdM5$-$9.5 of $0.60_{-0.60}^{+1.17}$% for projected physical separations larger than 1,360 au (up to 142,400 au). This study shows a multiplicity rate of $1.0_{-1.0}^{+2.0}$% in sdMs, and $1.9_{-1.9}^{+3.7}$% in extreme M subdwarfs (esdMs). We introduce the anytime-valid (AV) logrank test, a version of the logrank test that provides type-I error guarantees under optional stopping and optional continuation. The test is sequential without the need to specify a maximum sample size or stopping rule, and allows for cumulative meta-analysis with type-I error control. The method can be extended to define anytime-valid confidence intervals. The logrank test is an instance of the martingale tests based on E-variables that have been recently developed. We demonstrate type-I error guarantees for the test in a semiparametric setting of proportional hazards and show how to extend it to ties, Cox' regression and confidence sequences. Using a Gaussian approximation on the logrank statistic, we show that the AV logrank test (which itself is always exact) has a similar rejection region to O'Brien-Fleming alpha-spending but with the potential to achieve 100% power by optional continuation. Although our approach to study design requires a larger sample size, the *expected* sample size is competitive by optional stopping.

Ultracool dwarfs encompass a wide variety of compact stellar-like objects with spectra classified as late-M, L, T and Y. Most of them have been discovered using wide-field imaging surveys. The Virtual Observatory has proven to be of great utility to efficiently exploit these astronomical resources. We aim to validate a Virtual Observatory methodology designed to discover and characterize ultracool dwarfs in deep extragalactic surveys like ALHAMBRA and COSMOS. Three complementary searches based on parallaxes, proper motions and colours, respectively were carried out. A total of 897 candidate ultracool dwarfs were found, with only 16 previously reported in SIMBAD. Most of the new UCDs reported here are likely late-M and L dwarfs because of the limitations imposed by the utilization of optical ($Gaia$ DR2 and r-band) data. We complement ALHAMBRA and COSMOS photometry with other catalogues in the optical and infrared using VOSA, a Virtual Observatory tool that estimates effective temperatures from the spectral energy distribution fitting to collections of theoretical models. The agreement between the number of UCDs found in the COSMOS field and theoretical estimations together with the low false negative rate (known UCDs not discovered in our search) validates the methodology proposed in this work, which will be used in the forthcoming wide and deep surveys provided by the Euclid space mission. Simulations of Euclid number counts for UCDs detectable in different photometric passbands are presented for a wide survey area of 15,000 square degrees, and the limitations of applicability of Euclid data to detect UCDs using the methods employed in this paper are discussed.

The Any Light Particle Search II (ALPS II) is an experiment currently being built at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, that will use a light-shining-through-a-wall (LSW) approach to search for axion-like particles. ALPS II represents a significant step forward for these types of experiments as it will use 24 superconducting dipole magnets, along with dual, high-finesse, 122 m long optical cavities. This paper gives the first comprehensive recipe for the realization of the idea, proposed over 30 years ago, to use optical cavities before and after the wall to increase the power of the regenerated photon signal. The experiment is designed to achieve a sensitivity to the coupling between axion-like particles and photons down to g=2e-11 1/GeV for masses below 0.1 meV, more than three orders of magnitude beyond the sensitivity of previous laboratory experiments. The layout and main components that define ALPS II are discussed along with plans for reaching design sensitivity. Ultra-cool white dwarfs are among the oldest stellar remnants in the Universe. Their efficient gravitational settling and low effective temperatures are responsible for the smooth spectra they exhibit. For that reason, it is not possible to derive their radial velocities or to find the chemistry of the progenitors. The best that can be done is to infer such properties from associated sources, which are coeval. The simplest form of such a system is a common proper motion pair where one star is an evolved degenerate and the other a main-sequence star. In this work, we present the discovery of the first of such a system, the M dwarf LHS 6328 and the ultra-cool white dwarf PSO J1801+625, from the Pan-STARRS 1 3$\pi$ survey and the $Gaia$ Data Release 2. Follow-up spectra were collected covering a usable wavelength range of 3750-24500 {\AA}. Their spectra show that the white dwarf has an effective temperature of 3550K and surface gravity of $\log g = 7.45 \pm 0.13$ or $\log g = 7.49 \pm 0.13$ for a CO or He core, respectively, when compared against synthetic spectra of ultra-cool white dwarf atmosphere models. The system has slightly subsolar metallicity with -0.25 < [Fe/H] < 0.0, and a spatial velocity of (U, V, W) = ($-114.26 \pm 0.24$, $222.94 \pm 0.60$, $10.25 \pm 0.34$) km s $^{-1}$ the first radial velocity and metallicity measurements of an ultra-cool white dwarf. The method of oncotripsy, first proposed in [S. Heyden and M. Ortiz (2016). Oncotripsy: Targeting cancer cells selectively via resonant harmonic excitation. Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 92:164-175], exploits aberrations in the material properties and morphology of cancerous cells in order to ablate them selectively by means of tuned low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS). We propose a dynamical model of oncotripsy that follows as an application of cell dynamics, statistical mechanical theory of network elasticity and 'birth-death' kinetics to describe processes of damage and repair of the cytoskeleton. We also develop a reduced dynamical model that approximates the three-dimensional dynamics of the cell and facilitates parametric studies, including sensitivity analysis and process optimization. We show that the dynamical model predicts---and provides a conceptual basis for understanding---the oncotripsy effect and other trends in the data of [D. R. Mittelstein, J. Ye, E. F. Schibber, A. We presented 15 new T dwarfs that were selected from UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey, Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy, and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer surveys, and confirmed with optical to near infrared spectra obtained with the Very Large Telescope and the Gran Telescopio Canarias. One of these new T dwarfs is mildly metal-poor with slightly suppressed $K$-band flux. We presented a new X-shooter spectrum of a known benchmark sdT5.5 subdwarf, HIP 73786B. To better understand observational properties of brown dwarfs, we discussed transition zones (mass ranges) with low-rate hydrogen, lithium, and deuterium burning in brown dwarf population. The hydrogen burning transition zone is also the substellar transition zone that separates very low-mass stars, transitional, and degenerate brown dwarfs. Transitional brown dwarfs have been discussed in previous works of the Primeval series. Degenerate brown dwarfs without hydrogen fusion are the majority of brown dwarfs. Metal-poor degenerate brown dwarfs of the Galactic thick disc and halo have become T5+ subdwarfs. We selected 41 T5+ subdwarfs from the literature by their suppressed $K$-band flux. We studied the spectral-type - colour correlations, spectral-type - absolute magnitude correlations, colour-colour plots, and HR diagrams of T5+ subdwarfs, in comparison to these of L-T dwarfs and L subdwarfs.
