Abstract

A next step of energy increase of hadron colliders beyond the LHC requires high-field superconducting magnets capable of providing a dipolar field in the range of 16 T in a 50-mm aperture with accelerator quality. These characteristics could meet the requirements for an upgrade of the LHC to twice the present beam energy or for a 100-TeV center of mass energy future circular collider. This paper summarizes the activities and plans for the development of these magnets, in particular within the 16 T Magnet Technology Program, the WP5 of the EuroCirCol, and the U.S. Magnet Development Program.

Abstract

International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility ��� DEMOsingle bondOriented Neutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) is a planned powerful neutron source, which will generate an intense flux of neutrons (up to ���1015n/s/cm2) with a fusion-relevant energy spectrum. It will be an accelerator source based on deuteron beam - lithium target reactions. The engineering design of IFMIF-DONES is elaborated in the frame of the Early Neutron Source work package of the EUROfusion consortium. The facility will be dedicated to the irradiation of suitable structural materials planned for the construction of future fusion reactors such as DEMO (Demonstration Fusion Power Plant). Start-up Monitoring Module (STUMM) is designed to monitor radiation and thermal conditions during the commissioning phase of IFMIF-DONES, characterize the produced neutron flux and validate neutronic modeling of the facility. The conceptual design of STUMM is prepared by a team of physicists and engineers from the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) and the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), Poland. This paper presents the concept of STUMM, the proposed design of the module, and selected measuring systems.

Abstract

The paper presents an overview of the design status of the Radial Neutron Camera (RNC), that, together with the Vertical Neutron Camera, will provide, through reconstruction techniques applied to the measured line-integrated neutron fluxes, the time resolved measurement of the ITER neutron and α-source profile (i.e. neutron emissivity, neutrons emitted per unit time and volume). The RNC is composed of two subsystems, the In-Port RNC and Ex-Port RNC located, respectively, inside and outside the Plug of Equatorial Port #01. The In-Port subsystem is in a more advanced design stage since it has recently undergone the Final Design Review in the ITER procurement process. The paper describes the diagnostic layout, the interfaces, the measurement capabilities and the main challenges in its realization. Prototyping and testing of neutron detectors and electronics components were carried out and led to the choice of the component solutions that can match the environmental and operational constraints in terms radiation hardness, high temperature and electromagnetic compatibility. The performance of the RNC in terms of neutron emissivity measurement capability was assessed through 1D and 2D reconstruction analysis. It is proven that the neutron emissivity can be reconstructed in real-time within the measurement requirements: 10% accuracy, 10 ms time resolution and a/10 (a = plasma minor radius) space resolution.

Abstract

The transbilayer reorientation (flip-flop) of the long-chain amphiphilic anion DENSA (5-(N-decyl)aminonaphthalene-2-sulfonic acid) in the erythrocyte membrane was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. DENSA intercalates into the membrane at a high membrane/water partition coefficient (3.2.10(5)) and rapidly reorients from the outer to the inner layer in a first order process (k = 0.11 min-1, 37 degrees C, pH 7.4) leading to a steady-state distribution inner:outer layer of about 30:70. The activation energy of the fully reversible and symmetric flip process is about 110 kJ/mol. DIDS and various other established covalent and non-covalent inhibitors of anion transport via the erythrocyte anion exchanger, band 3 (AE 1), suppress the flip to a minimum of about 30-35% of the control. The flip is also inhibited by Cl- with a half maximal inhibitory concentration equal to that required for the inhibition of the exchange flux of ordinary anions via band 3. These findings indicate the involvement of a band 3 mediated (DIDS-sensitive) component of the flip and a DIDS-insensitive one, possibly involving, at least to some extent, simple transbilayer 'diffusion'. This latter component is stimulated by diamide, an SH oxidant known to increase the permeability of the membrane lipid domain of the erythrocyte. Alcohols (butanol, hexanol) accelerate both flip components. Papain treatment, known to inhibit 'ordinary' anion exchange, accelerates both flip and flop. The results suggest that band 3 protein, besides being a conventional transporter of anions, can act as a flippase translocating anionic, membrane-intercalated amphiphiles approaching the transporter from the lipid domain. The flippase mode of operation of band 3 must, however, differ in its mechanism from the conventional exchange mode.
