1. Using Jupyter Notebooks to foster computational skills and professional practice in an introductory physics lab course

Abstract

In this paper, we detail the integration of Python data analysis into a first-year physics laboratory course, a task accomplished without significant alterations to the existing course structure. We introduced tailored laboratory computational learning goals and designed activities to address them. We emphasise the development and application of Jupyter Notebooks, tailored with exercises and physics application examples, to facilitate students' mastery of data analysis programming within the laboratory setting. These Notebooks serve as a crucial tool in guiding students through the core principles of data handling and analysis in Python, while working on simple experimental tasks. The results of the evaluation of this intervention offer insights into the advantages and challenges associated with early integration of computational skills in laboratory courses, providing valuable information for educators in the field of physics education. 2. Exploring active learning in physics with ISLE-based modules in high school

Abstract

This study presents a case study of active learning within the Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE), using the iOLab digital devices. We designed a pilot lab format to enhance student engagement and understanding through direct experimentation, taking advantage of the multifunctional capabilities of the iOLab devices. This paper evaluates the pedagogical effectiveness of integrating ISLE with digital tools for data collection and analysis in physics experiments. The initial findings provide insights into the pedagogical benefits and logistical considerations of using such technologies in a laboratory setting. Abstract

Automatic segmentation of lesions in FDG-18 Whole Body (WB) PET/CT scans using deep learning models is instrumental for determining treatment response, optimizing dosimetry, and advancing theranostic applications in oncology. However, the presence of organs with elevated radiotracer uptake, such as the liver, spleen, brain, and bladder, often leads to challenges, as these regions are often misidentified as lesions by deep learning models. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach of segmenting both organs and lesions, aiming to enhance the performance of automatic lesion segmentation methods. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of our proposed method using the AutoPET II challenge dataset, which comprises 1014 subjects. We evaluated the impact of inclusion of additional labels and data in the segmentation performance of the model. In addition to the expert-annotated lesion labels, we introduced eight additional labels for organs, including the liver, kidneys, urinary bladder, spleen, lung, brain, heart, and stomach. These labels were integrated into the dataset, and a 3D UNET model was trained within the nnUNet framework. Our results demonstrate that our method achieved the top ranking in the held-out test dataset, underscoring the potential of this approach to significantly improve lesion segmentation accuracy in FDG-18 Whole-Body PET/CT scans, ultimately benefiting cancer patients and advancing clinical practice., Comment: AutoPET II challenge paper

Abstract

The Image Data Commons (IDC) contains publicly available cancer radiology datasets that could be pertinent to the research and development of advanced imaging tools and algorithms. However, the full extent of its research capabilities is limited by the fact that these datasets have few if any, annotations associated with them. Through this study with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) AI in Medical Imaging (AIMI) initiative, we produced high-quality, AI-generated imaging annotations of tissues, organs, and/or cancers for 11 distinct medical imaging collections from the IDC. These collections have a variety of image modalities, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging modalities. Furthermore, the imaging collections cover various body parities, such as the chest, breast, kidneys, prostate, and liver. Both publicly available and novel AI algorithms were adopted and further developed using open-sourced data coupled with expert annotations to create the AI-generated annotations. A portion of the AI annotations were reviewed and corrected by a radiologist to assess the AI model's performance. Both the AI's and the radiologist's annotations conformed to DICOM standards for seamless integration into the IDC collections as third-party analyses. 5. Integrating Python data analysis in an existing introductory laboratory course

Abstract

In this article we describe how we successfully incorporated data analysis in Python in a first-year laboratory course without significantly altering the course structure and without overburdening students. We show how we created and used carefully designed Jupyter Notebooks with exercises and physics application examples that allow students to master data analysis programming in the laboratory course. We use these Notebooks to guide students through the fundamentals of data handling and analysis in Python while performing simple experiments. We present our teaching approach and the developed materials. We discuss the effectiveness of our intervention based on the results from pre- and post- course questionnaires and students' group work. The results presented give insights about advantages and challenges of introducing computation at the early stage of the curriculum in a laboratory course setting and are informative for other instructors and the physics education research community., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

6. What Prompts Early Childhood Professionals to Proffer Advice to Multilingual Families? Investigating the Association between Language Policy and Perceived Self-Efficacy

Abstract

Early childhood professionals can act as catalysts in encouraging home language maintenance in multilingual families. However, there is a dearth of research on whether these professionals advise parents to speak their home language(s) to their offspring, and furthermore, little is known about what prompts professionals to proffer language advice. To respond to these queries, we relied on two theoretical frameworks: Spolsky's language policy model and Bandura's perceived self-efficacy theory. We gathered data from professionals (N = 305) employed at infant welfare clinics in Belgium and examined whether a high sense of multilingual confidence (i.e. a form of perceived self-efficacy), together with positive multilingual beliefs and multilingual practices, would induce professionals to offer multilingual advice (i.e. a form of language management). Our logistic regression results revealed that multilingual practices and multilingual confidence were positively associated with multilingual advice. Additionally, multilingual training was found to be strongly related to advice-giving. Multilingual beliefs, however, were only connected with multilingual advice when they were considered without the inclusion of multilingual confidence, as multilingual beliefs seemed to operate via multilingual confidence. We, therefore, suggest an enrichment of Spolsky's model by taking into account multilingual confidence when investigating individuals' language policy dynamics.

Esta pesquisa estudou a síntese de estruvita a partir de biomassa algácea obtida no tratamento de esgoto e submetida a tratamentos hidrolíticos térmico e químico alcalino. Amostras da biomassa foram coletadas em duas lagoas de alta taxa, sendo submetidas aos tratamentos para extração do hidrolisado rico em nitrogênio e fósforo. Foram realizados testes de cristalização da estruvita com adição de dosagens de óxido de magnésio (MgO), calculadas pela relação molar de magnésio com as concentrações de fósforo total encontradas nas amostras após hidrólise, e posterior separação dos cristais formados por sedimentação. Os tratamentos térmicos se mostraram mais eficientes ao promover a destruição de sólidos voláteis e solubilização de matéria orgânica, nitrogênio e fósforo. A micrografia dos cristais obtidos revelou similaridade aos cristais de estruvita, exceto para algumas amostras, e os resultados evidenciaram a viabilidade técnica da recuperação de nitrogênio e fósforo da biomassa.

17. A Quantitative Analysis of the Language Policy Processes in Early Childhood Professionals' Advice on Multilingual Parenting

Abstract

Whereas early childhood professionals can play a pivotal role in fostering young children's home language development, little is known about what determines the kind of multilingual parenting advice they offer families. The objective of this study was to deconstruct the processes culminating in two types of such recommendations: "advice highlighting the usage of the home language in the family domain versus advice to include the dominant language." Different theories, including Spolsky's insights on language policy and Ricento and Hornberger's Onion model, were used to investigate several aspects influencing professionals' interpersonal language policy. Logistic regression analyses were performed on a sample of 305 professionals employed at Flemish infant welfare clinics in Belgium. Our findings indicate that advice highlighting the home language is connected to manifold variables on the national, institutional, and interpersonal language policy levels. However, only few variables at the interpersonal and institutional level were associated with advice to include the dominant language. Hence, future research could further investigate the hitherto unidentified mechanisms underlying this type of advice. Overall, our results show the complex and nuanced ways in which the national, institutional, and interpersonal levels intersect in shaping different types of multilingual advice.

18. Order in the Chaos. Nurses' Perceptions of Multilingual Families in a Society Marked by a Monoglossic Ideology

Abstract

This paper explores the connection between nurses' multilingual beliefs and their advice on multilingual parenting to families with young children. Data was gathered through video-stimulated reflection dialogues with 11 nurses employed at infant welfare clinics in Belgium. Our analysis disclosed two salient counter topics regarding participants' multilingual beliefs: order versus chaos. The latter refers to nurses' view of multilingualism as a linguistic imbroglio. By 'order', we understand the benefits of multilingualism for cognitive and emotional development, provided that the multilingual environment is strictly regulated, particularly through the rigorous adherence to a consistent multilingual parenting strategy. Nurses' panacea for this linguistic farrago is manifested in their advice to multilingual parents. Their recommendations are consistent: multilingualism can only be advantageous for children through a functional language segregation within spaces (i.e. home versus school) and individuals (i.e. One-Parent-One-Language). Nurses' positive perspective on multilingualism thus hinges on the condition that home languages are neatly transmitted in which the acquisition of the school language will not be impeded. Our findings illuminate how nurses' ostensible multilingual orientations are in fact coloured by a monoglossic ideology in which multilingualism is acknowledged from a monolingual vantage point: as the simple sum of separate languages.

19. A Simple Mechanical Model of the Drumroll

We propose an experiment in which the sound of a drumroll is recorded and analysed according to a simple mechanical model in which the inelastic restitution coefficient of the collision between the stick and drum surface, as well as the ongoing kinematics of the drumstick, are considered. The agreement shows that this model is well suited for describing the most relevant features of drumstick behaviour during this type of motion.

Abstract

Abstract Carbon-based solid lubricants are excellent options to reduce friction and wear, especially with the carbon capability to adopt different allotropes forms. On the macroscale, these materials are sheared on the contact along with debris and contaminants to form tribolayers that govern the tribosystem performance. Using a recently developed advanced Raman analysis on the tribolayers, it was possible to quantify the contact-induced defects in the crystalline structure of a wide range of allotropes of carbon-based solid lubricants, from graphite and carbide-derived carbon particles to multi-layer graphene and carbon nanotubes. In addition, these materials were tested under various dry sliding conditions, with different geometries, topographies, and solid-lubricant application strategies. Regardless of the initial tribosystem conditions and allotrope level of atomic ordering, there is a remarkable trend of increasing the point and line defects density until a specific saturation limit in the same order of magnitude for all the materials tested.

Abstract

Abstract Background Stillbirth has been recognized as a possible complication of a SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy, probably due to destructive placental lesions (SARS-CoV-2 placentitis). The aim of this work is to analyse stillbirth and late miscarriage cases in unvaccinated pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the first two waves (wild-type period) in Belgium. Methods Stillbirths and late miscarriages in our prospective observational nationwide registry of SARS-CoV-2 infected pregnant women (n = 982) were classified by three authors using a modified WHO-UMC classification system for standardized case causality assessment. Results Our cohort included 982 hospitalised pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2, with 23 fetal demises (10 late miscarriages from 12 to 22 weeks of gestational age and 13 stillbirths). The stillbirth rate was 9.5‰ for singleton pregnancies and 83.3‰ for multiple pregnancies, which seems higher than for the background population (respectively 5.6‰ and 13.8‰). The agreement between assessors about the causal relationship with SARS-Cov-2 infection was fair (global weighted kappa value of 0.66). Among these demises, 17.4% (4/23) were “certainly” attributable to SARS-CoV-2 infection, 13.0% (3/23) “probably” and 30.4% (7/23) “possibly”. Better agreement in the rating was noticed when pathological examination of the placenta and identification of the virus were available, underlining the importance of a thorough investigation in case of intra-uterine fetal demise. Conclusions SARS-CoV-2 causality assessment of late miscarriage and stillbirth cases in our Belgian nationwide case series has shown that half of the fetal losses could be attributable to SARS-CoV-2. We must consider in future epidemic emergencies to rigorously investigate cases of intra-uterine fetal demise and to store placental tissue and other material for future analyses.

This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Creating Opportunities for Parent Empowerment COPE on stress anxiety coping and competence among the mothers of preterm neonates admitted in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU. Over the last decade premature birth rates have been steadily rising and owing to the technological advances even survival of the extreme preterm babies is a possibility. As many preterm babies thrive and survive focus must also be given to the parents especially the mothers who deliver before their estimated time of delivery. It is believed that most of the mothers undergo emotional turmoil as they are mentally not prepared for it. At times mothers feel helpless and reduced maternal confidence may lead to poor outcomes in the preterm baby care. Helping mothers to deal with this phase is essential. Coping strategies and support received from such mothers differ from place to place. Studies have been conducted for improving the coping of mothers with preterm babies and COPE has been highlighted as a useful strategy for better maternal adaptation. The findings of this review may help explore the outcomes of COPE program in alleviating the maternal emotional distress. This review will utilize studies that have used COPE program and its effect on mothers with preterm in the NICU on the stress anxiety coping and competence. The studies can be truequasi-experimental in nature. Research papers that evaluate any of the components of stress anxiety coping and competence will be considered. Both published and unpublished papers will be included in the review. MEDLINE Embase CINAHL the Cochrane Library Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials Google Scholar J-gate Dissertation Abstracts International ProQuest Dissertations and Theses are the main databases to be searched. The methodological merit of each study will be evaluated critically by two independent reviewers. Where possible studies will be combined in a statistical meta-analysis.

32. An Empirical Investigation of Spolsky's Framework Applied to Family Language Policy

Abstract

The current study quantitatively applies Spolsky's triangular framework of language policy, including beliefs, practices, and management, to the family domain by investigating language policy in multilingual families in Belgium's Flemish Community. Firstly, we examine whether the three components in fact call for an independent description and examination. Secondly, we address the relationships between the components. To that end, we developed three scales for each of the language policy components according to Spolsky's model, and we tested construct validity of these scales using confirmatory factor analysis. Respondents were 776 multilingual families in Belgium. The results of our analyses confirmed that language policy in the family domain is not a unitary construct and that even though the three components are interconnected, they can still be described independently from each other. Interestingly, while beliefs and practices, and practices and management, were strongly correlated, a similar relationship was not found for beliefs and management, a finding which goes against what was reported previously in more formal domains of language policy. We believe that the current study opens up a wide range of follow-up investigations that dig deeper into the differing dynamics between language policy components in formal institutionalised domains, and the informal family sphere.

33. An Empirical Validation Study of Spolsky's Language Policy Model

Abstract

This study investigates Spolsky's conception of language policy as the amalgam of language beliefs, language practices and language management. To the best of our knowledge, no quantitative evidence has ever been produced for his theoretical model. The current paper addressed this void, albeit specifically in the domain of Early Childhood Care and Education -- scarce in terms of language policy research, but vital for children's (multilingual) language development. An Exploratory Factor Analysis yielded three valid and reliable scales that capture language policy from the perspective of early childhood professionals (N = 305) associated with infant welfare clinics in the Flemish Community of Belgium. Furthermore, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis indicated that the three components are 'independent' as well as 'interconnected,' thereby quantitatively corroborating Spolsky's theory. We conclude that language policy is no unitary concept; therefore, if one intends to study language policy holistically, the three indispensable components are to be identified. As a corollary, one simply cannot investigate management without considering beliefs and practices, and vice versa.

Abstract

Teacher education programs have evolved mostly from the scholarly world's perspective, which can eventually impact the work that practitioners face on an everyday basis, particularly in regard to dealing with their students. This article of reflection addresses aspects related to a Brazilian teacher's personal practical knowledge and the role of practitioners' expertise in dealing with adolescent students (6th to 9th graders). It advocates that teachers' personal practical knowledge is likely to evolve into professional knowledge provided that it is analyzed, verified, and improved. Insights from second language teacher education, reflexive thoughts, and projects developed by the author illustrate what can be considered when developing strategies that are consistent with the envisioned teacher education programs.

We designed and tested a 3D motion tracking system which displays acquired and derived data using augmented reality. This setup, based on a virtual reality headset and its controllers, is a relatively low-cost, high-precision, six degrees of freedom, high-speed, multiple-objects tracking device. This apparatus proves to be a very high-quality motion sensor which can be used in the physics laboratory for motion tracking. Abstract

In engineering practice simplified methods are essential to the seismic design of embedded earth retaining walls, as fully- dynamic numerical analyses are costly, time-consuming and require specific expertise. Recently developed pseudostatic methods provide earth stresses and internal forces, even in those cases in which the strength of the soil surrounding the structure is not entirely mobilised. Semiempirical correlations or Newmark sliding block method provide an estimate of earthquake-induced permanent displacements. However, the use of these methods is hindered by uncertainties in the evaluation of a few input parameters, affecting the reliability of the methods. This study uses 1D site response analyses and 2D fully-dynamic finite element analyses to show that simplified methods can provide a reasonable estimate of the maximum bending moment and permanent displacements for stiff cantilever walls embedded in uniform sand, providing that a few input parameters are evaluated through semiempirical correlations and a simple 1D site response analysis.

Abstract

Synthetic biology is a new area of science that operates at the intersection of engineering and biology and aims to design and synthesize living organisms and systems to perform new or improved functions. Despite the important role it plays in resolving global issues, instructing synthetic biology can be challenged by a limited availability of specific educational materials and techniques for explaining complex molecular mechanisms. On the other hand, digital fabrication tools, which allow the creation of 3D objects, are increasingly used for educational purposes, and several computational structures of molecular components commonly used in synthetic biology processes are deposited in open databases. Therefore, we hypothesized that the use of computer-assisted design (CAD) and 3D printing to create biomolecular structural models through hands-on interaction, followed by reflective observation, critical and analytical thinking, could enhance students’ learning in synthetic biology. In this sense, the present work describes the design, 3D printing process, and evaluation in classrooms of the molecular models of the first synthetic biological circuit, the genetic toggle switch. The 3D printed molecular structures can be freely downloaded and used by teachers to facilitate the training of STEM students in synthetic biology. 49. Fundamental Change: Innovation in America's Schools Under Race to the Top. Executive Summary

Abstract

Race to the Top's success ultimately must be measured by its long-term impact on student learning. Because simultaneous change in multiple systems takes time, it is too early to make that determination of success now. However, it is not too early to learn from the positive achievements of and challenges faced by Race to the Top states. This executive summary focuses on some of the accomplishments of Race to the Top states and highlights examples of key practices and lessons learned during implementation. The content of this report draws upon information provided through a new performance management approach implemented with Race to the Top states that included monthly calls between state education leaders and staff at the Department of Education, online data displays, annual on-site performance reviews, and annual progress reports detailing the Department's assessment of each state's performance. Race to the Top states shared their reflections on progress and lessons learned through narrative submissions at the end of the four-year grant period. The interactions between state education leaders and Department staff focused on state progress toward meeting the targets and goals established in each state's plan, in addition to traditional compliance reviews. The approach required states to continuously evaluate the results of their efforts to improve teaching and learning and consider if they needed to adjust strategies to achieve their desired outcomes. In addition, the approach allowed the Department, grantees, and the public to follow grantee progress in implementing comprehensive education plans and meeting ambitious goals to improve teaching and learning. Alongside the performance management approach, the Department worked with the Reform Support Network (RSN) to provide states with results-oriented, differentiated, and responsive technical assistance driven by state needs and, in part, by the annual review process.
