Magnetic materials host a wealth of nonlinear dynamics, textures, and topological defects. This is possible due to the competition between strong nonlinearity and dispersion that act at the atomic scale as well as long-range interactions. However, these features are difficult to analytically and numerically study because of the vastly different temporal and spatial scales involved. Here, we present a pseudo-spectral approach for the Landau-Lifshitz equation that invokes energy and momentum conservation embodied in the magnon dispersion relation to accurately describe both atomic and continuum limits. Furthermore, this approach enables analytical study at every scale. We show the applicability of this model in both the continuum and atomic limit by investigating modulational instability and ultrafast evolution of magnetization due to transient grating, respectively, in a 1D ferromagnetic chain with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This model provides the possibility of grid-independent multiscale numerical approaches that will enable the description of singularities within a single framework.

It is widely known that antiferromagnets (AFMs) display a high frequency response in the terahertz (THz) range, which opens up the possibility for ultrafast control of their magnetization for next generation data storage and processing applications. However, because the magnetization of the different sublattices cancel, their state is notoriously difficult to read. One way to overcome this is to couple AFMs to ferromagnets - whose state is trivially read via magneto-resistance sensors. Here we present conditions, using theoretical modelling, that it is possible to switch the magnetization of an AFM/FM bilayer using THz frequency pulses with moderate field amplitude and short durations, achievable in experiments. Consistent switching is observed in the phase diagrams for an order of magnitude increase in the interface coupling and a tripling in the thickness of the FM layer. We demonstrate a range of reversal paths that arise due to the combination of precession in the materials and the THz-induced fields. Our analysis demonstrates that the AFM drives the switching and results in a much higher frequency dynamics in the FM due to the exchange coupling at the interface. The switching is shown to be robust over a broad range of temperatures relevant for device applications.

Coherent light-matter interactions mediated by opto-magnetic phenomena like the inverse Faraday effect (IFE) are expected to provide a non-thermal pathway for ultrafast manipulation of magnetism on timescales as short as the excitation pulse itself. As the IFE scales with the spin-orbit coupling strength of the involved electronic states, photo-exciting the strongly spin-orbit coupled core-level electrons in magnetic materials appears as an appealing method to transiently generate large opto-magnetic moments. Here, we investigate this scenario in a ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy by using intense and circularly polarized pulses of extreme ultraviolet radiation. Our results reveal ultrafast and strong helicity-dependent magnetic effects which are in line with the characteristic fingerprints of an IFE, corroborated by ab initio opto-magnetic IFE theory and atomistic spin dynamics simulations.

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) are strong candidates for the future spintronic and memory applications largely because of their inherently fast dynamics and lack of stray fields, with Mn2Au being one of the most promising. For the numerical modelling of magnetic material properties, it is common to use ab-initio methods, atomistic models and micromagnetics. However, each method alone describes the physics within certain limits. Multiscale methods bridging the gap between these three approaches have been already proposed for ferromagnetic materials. Here, we present a complete multiscale model of the AFM Mn2Au as an exemplar material, starting with results from ab-initio methods going via atomistic spin dynamics (ASD) to an AFM Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (AFM-LLB) model. Firstly, bulk is modelled using a classical spin Hamiltonian constructed based on earlier first-principles calculations. Secondly, this spin model is used in the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) to calculate temperature-dependent equilibrium properties, such as magnetization and magnetic susceptibilities. Thirdly, the temperature dependent micromagnetic parameters are used in the AFM-LLB. We validate our approach by comparing the ASD and AFM-LLB models for three paradigmatic cases; (i) Damped magnetic oscillations, (ii) magnetization dynamics following a heat pulse resembling pump-probe experiments, (iii) magnetic domain wall motion under thermal gradients., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

The manipulation of the magnetic direction by using the ultrafast laser pulse is attractive for its great advantages in terms of speed and energy efficiency for information storage applications. However, the heating and helicity effects induced by circularly polarized laser excitation are entangled in the helicity-dependent all-optical switching (HD-AOS), which hinders the understanding of magnetization dynamics involved. Here, by applying a dual-pump laser excitation, first with a linearly polarized (LP) laser pulse followed by a circularly polarized (CP) laser pulse, we identify the timescales and contribution from heating and helicity effects in HD-AOS with a Pt/Co/Pt triple layer. When the sample is preheated by the LP laser pulses to a nearly fully demagnetized state, CP laser pulses with a much-reduced power switches the sample's magnetization. By varying the time delay between the two pump pulses, we show that the helicity effect, which gives rise to the deterministic helicity induced switching, onsets instantly upon laser excitation, and only exists for less than 0.2 ps close to the laser pulse duration of 0.15 ps. The results reveal that that the transient magnetization state upon which CP laser pulses impinge is the key factor for achieving HD-AOS, and importantly, the tunability between heating and helicity effects with the unique dual-pump laser excitation approach will enable HD-AOS in a wide range of magnetic material systems for the potential ultrafast spintronics applications., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

In this work, we present evidence for the existence of a magnonic current on the sub-picosecond time-scale in a ferrimagnetic bilayer and its effect on ultrafast spin dynamics. The ferrimagnet, GdFeCo, is a material known to undergo ultrafast switching within 1-2ps after excitation with femtosecond laser pulses. Here, we show that the strong thermal gradients induced by applying femtosecond laser pulses and the presence of chemical inhomogeneities lead to local imbalances in the effective temperatures of the spins that produces a rapid transfer of spin angular momentum, which we interpret as an ultrafast spin Seebeck effect. We have quantified the typical magnon propagation in such a system. The results show ballistic magnon propagation with 30nm/ps velocities. The characteristic time scale of such magnon propagation indicates that this magnon transport can play an important role in switching, a crucial piece of understanding towards realising next generation data processing devices that operate at much higher frequencies., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Many questions are still open regarding the physical mechanisms behind the magnetic switching in GdFeCo alloys by single optical pulses. Phenomenological models suggest a femtosecond scale exchange relaxation between sublattice magnetization as the driving mechanism for switching. The recent observation of thermally induced switching in GdFeCo by using both several picosecond optical laser pulse as well as electric current pulses has questioned this previous understanding. This has raised the question of whether or not the same switching mechanics are acting at the femo- and picosecond scales. In this work, we aim at filling this gap in the understanding of the switching mechanisms behind thermal single-pulse switching. To that end, we have studied experimentally thermal single-pulse switching in GdFeCo alloys, for a wide range of system parameters, such as composition, laser power and pulse duration. We provide a quantitative description of the switching dynamics using atomistic spin dynamics methods with excellent agreement between the model and our experiments across a wide range of parameters and timescales, ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds. Furthermore, we find distinct element-specific damping parameters as a key ingredient for switching with long picosecond pulses and argue, that switching with pulse durations as long as 15 picoseconds is possible due to a low damping constant of Gd. Our findings can be easily extended to speed up dynamics in other contexts where ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloys have been already demonstrated to show fast and energy-efficient processes, e.g. domain-wall motion in a track and spin-orbit torque switching in spintronics devices.

Ultrafast control of the magnetization in ps timescales by fs laser pulses offers an attractive avenue for applications such as fast magnetic devices for logic and memory. However, ultrafast helicity-independent all-optical switching (HI-AOS) of the magnetization has thus far only been observed in Gd-based, ferrimagnetic amorphous (\textit{a}-) rare earth-transition metal (\textit{a}-RE-TM) systems, and a comprehensive understanding of the reversal mechanism remains elusive. Here, we report HI-AOS in ferrimagnetic \textit{a}-Gd$_{22-x}$Tb$_x$Co$_{78}$ thin films, from x = 0 to x = 18, and elucidate the role of Gd in HI-AOS in \textit{a}-RE-TM alloys and multilayers. Increasing Tb content results in increasing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and coercivity, without modifying magnetization density, and slower remagnetization rates and higher critical fluences for switching but still shows picosecond HI-AOS. Simulations of the atomistic spin dynamics based on the two-temperature model reproduce these results qualitatively and predict that the lower damping on the RE sublattice arising from the small spin-orbit coupling of Gd (with $L = 0$) is instrumental for the faster dynamics and lower critical fluences of the Gd-rich alloys. Annealing \textit{a}-Gd$_{10}$Tb$_{12}$Co$_{78}$ leads to slower dynamics which we argue is due to an increase in damping. These simulations strongly indicate that acounting for element-specific damping is crucial in understanding HI-AOS phenomena. The results suggest that engineering the element specific damping of materials can open up new classes of materials that exhibit low-energy, ultrafast HI-AOS.

We investigated the atomic fill site probability distributions across supercell structures of RT12-xTi (R=Nd, Sm, T=Fe, Co). We use a combined molecular dynamics and Boltzmann distribution approach to extrapolate the probability distributions for Ti substitution from lower to higher temperatures with an equilibrium condition to assess how temperature affects the predictability of the structures fill path. It was found that the Nd and Sm based Fe systems have the highest filling probability path at lower temperatures but the cohesive energy change due to Ti substitution in Sm and Nd based crystals indicates that a more stable system could be achieved with a combination Co and Fe in the transition metal site., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

In this work, we propose helicity-dependent switching (HDS) of magnetization of Co/Pt for energy efficient optical receiver. Designing a low power optical receiver for optical-to-electrical signal conversion has proven to be very challenging. Current day receivers use a photodiode that produces a photocurrent in response to input optical signals, and power hungry trans-impedance amplifiers are required to amplify the small photocurrents. Here, we propose light helicity induced switching of magnetization to overcome the requirement of photodiodes and subsequent trans-impedance amplification by sensing the change in magnetization with a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). Magnetization switching of a thin ferromagnet layer using circularly polarized laser pulses have recently been demonstrated which shows one-to-one correspondence between light helicity and the magnetization state. We propose to utilize this phenomena by using digital input dependent circularly polarized laser pulses to directly switch the magnetization state of a thin Co/Pt ferromagnet layer at the receiver. The Co/Pt layer is used as the free layer of an MTJ, the resistance of which is modified by the laser pulses. With the one-to-one dependence between input data and output magnetization state, the MTJ resistance is directly converted to digital output signal. Our device to circuit level simulation results indicate that, HDS based optical receiver consumes only 0.124 pJ/bit energy, which is much lower than existing techniques., Comment: Under review in Physical Review Applied

Using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) method, helicity-dependent all-optical magnetization switching (HD-AOS) is observed in ferrimagnetic TbFeCo films. The thermal effect and opto-magneto effects are separately justified after single circularly polarized laser pulse. The integral evolution of this ultrafast switching is characterized on different time scales and the defined magnetization reversal time of 460 fs is the fastest ever observed. Combining the heat effect and inverse Faraday effect (IFE), micromagnetic simulations based on a single macro-spin model are performed that reproduce HD-AOS following a linear reversal mechanism.

Optical interconnect has emerged as the front-runner to replace electrical interconnect especially for off-chip communication. However, a major drawback with optical interconnects is the need for photodetectors and amplifiers at the receiver, implemented usually by direct bandgap semiconductors and analog CMOS circuits, leading to large energy consumption and slow operating time. In this article, we propose a new optical interconnect architecture that uses a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) at the receiver side that is switched by femtosecond laser pulses. The state of the MTJ can be sensed using simple digital CMOS latches, resulting in significant improvement in energy consumption. Moreover, magnetization in the MTJ can be switched on the picoseconds time-scale and our design can operate at a speed of 5 Gbits/sec for a single link.

Using the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) equation for ferromagnetic materials, we derive analytic expressions for temperature dependent absorption spectra as probed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). By analysing the resulting expressions, we can predict the variation of the resonance frequency and damping with temperature and coupling to the thermal bath. We base our calculations on the technologically relevant L1$_0$ FePt, parameterised from atomistic spin dynamics simulations, with the Hamiltonian mapped from ab-initio parameters. By constructing a multi-macrospin model based on the LLB equation and exploiting GPU acceleration we extend the study to investigate the effects on the damping and resonance frequency in ${\mu}$m sized structures., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Atomistic modelling of magnetic materials provides unprecedented detail about the underlying physical processes that govern their macroscopic properties, and allows the simulation of complex effects such as surface anisotropy, ultrafast laser-induced spin dynamics, exchange bias, and mi- crostructural effects. Here we present the key methods used in atomistic spin models which are then applied to a range of magnetic problems. We detail the parallelisation strategies used which enable the routine simulation of extended systems with full atomistic resolution.

Synthetic ferrimagnets are composite magnetic structures formed from two or more anti- ferromagnetically coupled magnetic sublattices with different magnetic moments. Here we report on atomistic spin simulations of the laser-induced magnetization dynamics on such synthetic ferrimag- nets, and demonstrate that the application of ultrashort laser pulses leads to sub-picoscond magnetization dynamics and all-optical switching in a similar manner as in ferrimagnetic alloys. Moreover, we present the essential material properties for successful laser-induced switching, demonstrating the feasibility of using a synthetic ferrimagnet as a high density magnetic storage element without the need of a write field.
