Abstract Microneedles are mainly used for pain-free drug administration and in biosensing for wearable systems. They are also promising for fields such as agronomy for precision farming, but their fabrication is not straightforward, often requiring expensive equipment and cleanroom protocols, being unsuitable for mass production. Here, we report a new and simple method for the scalable fabrication of all-inkjet-printed conductive microneedles based on silver nanoparticles (extensible to any other metallic nanoparticle ink) and a simple example of their application for monitoring the electrochemical properties of plants.

This study evaluated the impact of a single variation in the etching time of H2SO4/H2O2-treated titanium (Ti) surfaces on the adsorption of growth and differentiation factor-5 (GDF-5) and their effects on the acquisition of the osteogenic phenotype in vitro. Rat primary calvarial osteogenic cells were grown for up to 14 days on the following Ti surfaces: (1) 30 min: nanotopography obtained with a 1:1 mixture of H2SO4/H2O2 for 30 min (control); (2) 30 min + GDF-5: a 30 min-etched Ti sample adsorbed with recombinant human (rh) GDF-5; (3) 4 h: nanotopography obtained with a 1:1 mixture of H2SO4/H2O2 for 4 h (control); (4) 4 h + GDF-5: a 4 h-etched Ti sample adsorbed with rhGDF-5. The GDF-5 adsorption procedure was carried out on the day before cell plating using 200 ng/mL rhGDF-5 overnight at 4 °C. The 30 min- and 4 h-etched Ti samples exhibited a high hydrophilic network of nanopits with a tendency towards larger nanopits for the 4 h group, which corresponded to an enhanced GDF-5 adsorption. For both etching times, coating with GDF-5 resulted in less hydrophilic surfaces that supported (1) a reduction in the proportion of spread cells and an enhanced extracellular osteopontin labeling at early time points of culture, and (2) increased alkaline phosphatase activity preceding an enhanced mineralized matrix formation compared with controls, with a tendency towards higher osteogenic activity for the 4 h + GDF-5 group. In conclusion, the osteogenic potential induced by the GDF-5 coating can be tailored by subtle changes in the nanotopographic characteristics of Ti surfaces.

Summary: A deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids (ω3 FAs) in the brain has been correlated with cognitive impairment, learning deficiencies, and behavioral changes. In this study, we provided ω3 FAs as a supplement to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR+ ω3). Our focus was on examining the impact of dietary supplementation on the physicochemical properties of the brain-cell membranes. Significant increases in ω3 levels in the cerebral cortex of SHR+ ω3 were observed, leading to alterations in brain lipid membranes molecular packing, elasticity, and lipid miscibility, resulting in an augmented phase disparity. Results from synthetic lipid mixtures confirmed the disordering effect introduced by ω3 lipids, showing its consequences on the hydration levels of the monolayers and the organization of the membrane domains. These findings suggest that dietary ω3 FAs influence the organization of brain membranes, providing insight into a potential mechanism for the broad effects of dietary fat on brain health and disease.

Abstract Having a direct or indirect band gap can influence the potential applications of a semiconductor, for indirect band gap materials are usually not suitable for optoelectronic devices. Even though this is a fundamental property of semiconducting materials, discussed in textbooks, no unified theory exists to explain why a material has a direct or indirect band gap. Here we used an interpretable machine learning model, the multiVariate dAta eXplanation (VAX) method, to gather information from a dataset of materials extracted from the Materials Project. The dataset contains more than 10000 entries, and atomic properties such as the number of electrons, electronic affinity and orbital energies were used as features to build random forest models that successfully explain the directness of the band gaps. Our results indicate that symmetry is an important feature that dictates the target property, which is the reason why our analysis is made based on sub-groups with similar structures. These sub-groups include materials with zincblende, rocksalt, wurtzite, and perovskite structures. Besides the symmetry of the materials, the existence or not of d bands and the relative energy of atomic orbitals were found to be important in defining whether a material’s band gap is direct or indirect. In conclusion, interpretable machine learning methods such as VAX can be useful in obtaining physical interpretation from materials databases.

An electronic tongue was developed for the detection of lactose content in commercial foods. This was accomplished by employing optimized detection units comprised of gelatin films and information visualization methods for data analysis. The films incorporating gelatin, tannic acid, and zein, served as the basis for the sensors, whose electrodes were screen printed using carbon black ink. Self-supporting films were produced using various combinations of these materials, some of which had limited solubility in water (from 33% to 36%). They were hydrophobic and yielded reproducible electrical impedance spectra to be used as sensing units. Lactose detection experiments were conducted using various standard concentrations and commercial food samples. Capacitance decreased with lactose concentration at low frequencies, with films lacking a hydrophobic coating showing higher capacitance signals (exceeding 200 nF). Low limits of detection were obtained for the most sensitive films, as low as 2.03 × 10−19 mol/L, comparable to existing biosensors to detect lactose. Combining data from four sensing units in an electronic tongue allowed for the differentiation of lactose concentrations ranging from 1 × 10−20 mol/L to 1 × 10−6 mol/L using the interactive document mapping (IDMAP) projection technique, leading to a silhouette coefficient of 0.716. The discriminatory power of the electronic tongue was validated by distinguishing between lactose-containing and lactose-free food products. These findings highlight the potential of electronic tongues made with sustainable materials for applications in food quality assessment and lactose intolerance management.

Detection of mycotoxins in food is essential due to their potential harm to human and animal health. However, developing affordable and rapid methods for their detection, particularly with the necessary selectivity to differentiate between various mycotoxins, remains a challenge. Herein, we present low-cost paper-based sensing platforms modified with curcumin, a natural polyphenolic compound, for the electrochemical and optical detection of ochratoxin A (OTA). By exploiting the fluorescence quenching effect of OTA on curcumin through Förster energy transfer, we successfully conducted optical detection with LODs of 0.09 ng mL−1 and a linear range of 0.5 to 15 ng mL−1. Additionally, by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and a portable instrument, we detected OTA with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.045 ng mL−1. These sensitivity levels meet the requirements established by food regulatory agencies for monitoring food quality in relation to OTA contamination. Our curcumin-modified paper-based sensors offer a compelling combination of simplicity in manufacturing and cost-effectiveness, underscoring their potential for routine food quality monitoring, especially concerning ochratoxin A.

Mefloquine (MQ) is an antimalarial medication prescribed to treat or malaria prevention.. When taken by children, vomiting usually occurs, and new doses of medication frequently need to be taken. So, developing pediatric medicines using taste-masked antimalarial drug complexes is mandatory for the success of mefloquine administration. The hypothesis that binding mefloquine to an ion-exchange resin (R) could circumvent the drug’s bitter taste problem was proposed, and solid-state 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR was able to follow MQ–R mixtures through chemical shift and relaxation measurements. The nature of MQ–R complex formation could then be determined. Impedimetric electronic tongue equipment also verified the resinate taste-masking efficiency in vitro. Variations in chemical shifts and structure dynamics measured by proton relaxation properties (e.g., T1ρH) were used as probes to follow the extension of mixing and specific interactions that would be present in MQ–R. A significant decrease in T1ρH values was observed for MQ carbons in MQ–R complexes, compared to the ones in MQ (from 100–200 ms in MQ to 20–50 ms in an MQ–R complex). The results evidenced that the cationic resin interacts strongly with mefloquine molecules in the formulation of a 1:1 ratio complex. Thus, 13C CPMAS NMR allowed the confirmation of the presence of a binding between mefloquine and polacrilin in the MQ–R formulation studied.

Biomaterials have been intensively investigated due to the increase in the elderly population and high prevalence of several disorders, such as cardiovascular and orthopedic diseases. Polymeric and composite polymeric materials in combination with different processing techniques, such as electrospinning, solution blow spinning, ultrathin film preparation, and 3D printing are promising for obtaining biomaterials with patient-specific applications. Here, we provide a review on recent advances and perspectives for synthetic and natural polymers as well as composites in the design of biomaterials. After introducing basic information about biomaterials, we describe the fundamentals of manufacturing techniques and highlight possible biomedical applications.

Monitoring the concentration of antibiotics in body fluids is essential to optimizing the therapy and minimizing the risk of bacteria resistance, which can be made with electrochemical sensors tailored with appropriate materials. In this paper, we report on sensors made with screen-printed electrodes (SPE) coated with fullerene (C60), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Nafion (NF) (C60-rGO-NF/SPE) to determine the antibiotic metronidazole (MTZ). Under optimized conditions, the C60-rGO-NF/SPE sensor exhibited a linear response in square wave voltammetry for MTZ concentrations from 2.5 × 10−7 to 34 × 10−6 mol/L, with a detection limit of 2.1 × 10−7 mol/L. This sensor was also capable of detecting MTZ in serum and urine, with recovery between 94% and 100%, which are similar to those of the standard chromatographic method (HPLC-UV). Because the C60-rGO-NF/SPE sensor is amenable to mass production and allows for MTZ determination with simple principles of detection, it fulfills the requirements of therapeutic drug monitoring programs.

Early diagnosis of cattle diseases such as mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) can be made effective if on-site detection methods with portable instruments are available. In this work, we fabricated immunosensors based on a layer-by-layer (LbL) film of chitosan and carbon nanotubes coated with a layer of antibodies to detect S. aureus. Using electrical and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies, detection was possible in buffer solutions and in milk with limits of detection which could be as low as 2.6 CFU/mL for milk, sufficient to detect mastitis at early stages. This high sensitivity is ascribed to the specific interactions involving the antibodies, as demonstrated with polarization-modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). The selectivity of the immunosensor was verified by distinguishing S. aureus-containing samples from possible interferents found in milk, for which the interactive document mapping (IDMAP) was employed. Because the interferents affected the spectra, in spite of this distinguishability, we treated the data with a machine learning technique with decision tree models. A multidimensional calibration space was then obtained with rules that permit interpretability and predictability in detecting S. aureus in matrices with high variability as in milk.

Abstract Herein, we review aspects of leading-edge research and innovation in materials science that exploit big data and machine learning (ML), two computer science concepts that combine to yield computational intelligence. ML can accelerate the solution of intricate chemical problems and even solve problems that otherwise would not be tractable. However, the potential benefits of ML come at the cost of big data production; that is, the algorithms demand large volumes of data of various natures and from different sources, from material properties to sensor data. In the survey, we propose a roadmap for future developments with emphasis on computer-aided discovery of new materials and analysis of chemical sensing compounds, both prominent research fields for ML in the context of materials science. In addition to providing an overview of recent advances, we elaborate upon the conceptual and practical limitations of big data and ML applied to materials science, outlining processes, discussing pitfalls, and reviewing cases of success and failure.

Machine learning and other artificial intelligence methods are gaining increasing prominence in chemistry and materials sciences, especially for materials design and discovery, and in data analysis of results generated by sensors and biosensors. In this paper, we present a perspective on this current use of machine learning, and discuss the prospects of the future impact of extending the use of machine learning to encompass knowledge discovery as an essential step towards a new paradigm of machine-generated knowledge. The reasons why results so far have been limited are given with a discussion of the limitations of machine learning in tasks requiring interpretation. Also discussed is the need to adapt the training of students and scientists in chemistry and materials sciences, to better explore the potential of artificial intelligence capabilities.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) employed in industrial processes that causes adverse effects on the environment and human health. Sensitive and inexpensive methods to detect BPA are therefore needed. In this paper, we describe an electrochemical biosensor for detecting low levels of BPA using polymeric electrospun nanofibers of polyamide 6 (PA6) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), namely, PA6/PAH@AuNPs, which were deposited onto a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate. The hybrid layer was excellent for the immobilization of tyrosinase (Tyr), which allowed an amperometric detection of BPA with a limit of detection of 0.011 μM in the concentration range from 0.05 to 20 μM. Detection was also possible in real water samples with recoveries in the range of 92–105%. The improved sensing performance is attributed to the combined effect of the large surface area and porosity of PA6/PAH nanofibers, the catalytic activity of AuNPs, and oxidoreductase ability of Tyr. These results provide a route for novel biosensing architectures to monitor BPA and other EDCs in water resources.

We introduce a bifunctional architecture to construct biosensors on solution-blow spinning fiber mats of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). PLA/PEG mats acted as substrate for printing electrodes and as matrix to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOx). Prussian Blue nanoparticles (PB) decorated working electrodes to detect H2O2 from enzymatic catalysis at a low applied potential (0 V vs. Ag/AgCl) with detection limit of 0.197 mM. Dielectric gratings that couple optical fibers and planar waveguide circuits are key for optical-to-electronic (electronic-to-optical) signal conversion, but their applicability to platforms that require broader bandwidths and higher capacity is limited by their single-wavelength response. Herein, we present the design of a quasi-periodic grating coupler with multiband fiber-to-waveguide (waveguide-to-fiber) coupling response, where the grating consists of a periodic repetition of unit cells made of alternating silicon and air grooves according to the Fibonacci sequence. Through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations, we show that this new device could be used for coupling multi-wavelength fiber modes in a single grating structure. The results were obtained for fibers operating in the wavelength range from 1000 nm to 2000 nm, but the concept can be readily extended to other frequency ranges. Moreover, the allowed modes in the grating are almost insensitive to fiber misalignments and small fabrication errors for high Fibonacci steps, which is useful when alignment of optical components is impractical. It is hoped that properly designed gratings overlapping multiple modes may lead to ultra-broadband fiber-waveguide couplers that can cope with the growing demand for higher capacity and bandwidth in optical communications.

Diagnosis of cancer using electroanalytical methods can be achieved at low cost and in rapid assays, but this may require the combination with data treatment for determining biomarkers in real samples. In this paper, we report an immunomagnetic nanoparticle-based microfluidic sensor (INμ-SPCE) for the amperometric detection of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) biomarker, the data of which were treated with information visualization methods. The INμ-SPCE consists of eight working electrodes, reference and counter electrodes. On the working electrodes, magnetic nanoparticles with secondary antibodies with the enzyme horseradish peroxidase were immobilized for the indirect detection of PSA in a sandwich-type procedure. Under optimal conditions, the immunosensor could operate within a wide range from 12.5 to 1111 fg·L−1, with a low detection limit of 0.062 fg·L−1. Multidimensional projections combined with feature selection allowed for the distinction of cell lysates with different levels of PSA, in agreement with results from the traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The approaches for immunoassays and data processing are generic, and therefore the strategies described here may provide a simple platform for clinical diagnosis of cancers and other types of diseases.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and early diagnosis is the best strategy to reduce mortality risk. Biosensors to detect cancer biomarkers are based on various principles of detection, including electrochemical, optical, electrical, and mechanical measurements. Despite the advances in the identification of biomarkers and the conventional 2D manufacturing processes, detection methods for cancers still require improvements in terms of selectivity and sensitivity, especially for point-of-care diagnosis. Three-dimensional printing may offer the features to produce complex geometries in the design of high-precision, low-cost sensors. Three-dimensional printing, also known as additive manufacturing, allows for the production of sensitive, user-friendly, and semi-automated sensors, whose composition, geometry, and functionality can be controlled. This paper reviews the recent use of 3D printing in biosensors for cancer diagnosis, highlighting the main advantages and advances achieved with this technology. Additionally, the challenges in 3D printing technology for the mass production of high-performance biosensors for cancer diagnosis are addressed.

Abstract The immobilization of the enzyme tyrosinase (Tyr) in lipid matrices can be explored to produce biosensors for detecting polyphenols, which is relevant for the food industry. Herein, we shall demonstrate the importance of the lipid composition to immobilize the enzyme tyrosinase in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Tyr could be incorporated into Langmuir monolayers of arachidic acid (AA), 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1’-rac-glycerol) (sodium salt) (DPPG), having as the main effect an expansion in the monolayers. Results from polarization-modulated infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) pointed to electrostatic interactions between the charged residues of Try and the lipid headgroups, in addition to changes in the order of lipid chains. The interaction between Tyr and DPPC in Langmuir monolayers can be correlated with the superior performance of DPPC/Tyr LB films used as biosensors to detect catechol by cyclic voltammetry. The molecular-level interactions assessed via PM-IRRAS are therefore believed to drive an immobilization process for Tyr in the lipid LB matrix and may serve as a general criterion to identify matrices that preserve enzyme activity.

We report on the design of a low-profile integrated millimeter-wave antenna for efficient and broadband circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation. The designed antenna comprises a chiral dielectric metasurface built with a 2×2 arrangement of dielectric cylinders with slanted-slots at the center. A broadbeam high-gain with wide axial ratio (AR)<3 dB bandwidth was reached by pairing the electric and magnetic resonances of the dielectric cylinders and the slanted slots when excited by an elliptically polarized driven-patch antenna. This electric-magnetic pairing can be tuned by varying the cylinders diameter and the tilting and rotation angles of the slanted slots. The simulation results indicate impedance-matching bandwidths up to 22.6% (25.3–31.6 GHz) with 3-dB AR bandwidths of 11.6% (26.9–30.2 GHz), which in terms of compactness (0.95λ0×0.95λ0) and performance are superior to previous antenna designs. Since the simulations were performed by assuming materials and geometries easily implementable experimentally, it is hoped that circularly polarized antennas based on chiral metasurfaces can be integrated into 5G and satellite communications.

The detection of pollutant traces in the public water supply and aquifers is essential for the safety of the population. In this article, we demonstrate that a simple electrochemical procedure in acidic solution can be employed for enhancing the sensitivity of flexible screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPEs) to detect bisphenol-A (BPA), hydroquinone, and catechol, simultaneously. The SPEs were pretreated electrochemically in a H2SO4 solution, which did not affect their morphology, yielding high current signals with well separated oxidation peaks. The sensitivity values were 0.28, 0.230, and 0.056 µA L µmol−1 with detection limits of 0.12, 0.82, and 0.95 µmol L−1 for hydroquinone, catechol, and BPA, respectively. The sensors were reproducible and selective for detecting BPA in plastic cups, and with adequate specificity not to be affected by interferents from water samples. The simple, inexpensive, and flexible SPE may thus be used to detect emerging pollutants and monitor the water quality.

We report a paper-based electrochemical immunosensor made with sustainable materials to detect aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a highly toxic, carcinogenic mycotoxin found in food. The immunosensor was prepared with a waterproof paper substrate and low-cost graphite-based conductive ink through a simple cut-printing method. The working electrode was functionalized with a drop-cast film of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)/chitosan on which a layer of anti-AFB1 monoclonal antibodies was immobilized covalently. The architecture of the immunosensor was confirmed with polarization-modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), including the effective immobilization of the active layer of anti-AFB1. With EIS as the principle of detection, the immunosensor could detect AFB1 in the range from 1 to 30 ng·mL−1, and detection limit of 0.62 ng·mL−1. This sensitivity is sufficient to detect AFB1 in food according to regulatory agencies. The immunosensor exhibited good repeatability, reproducibility, stability, and selectivity in experiments with a possible interferent. Furthermore, detection of AFB1 in maize flour samples yielded recovery of 97–99%, in a demonstration of the possible use of the paper-based immunosensor to detect AFB1 using extraction solutions from food samples.

The increasing need for point-of-care diagnosis has sparked the development of label-free sensing platforms, some of which are based on impedance measurements with biological cells. Here, interdigitated electrodes were functionalized with layer-by-layer (LbL) films of hyaluronan (HA) and chitosan (CHI) to detect prostatic tumor cells (PC3 line). The deposition of LbL films was confirmed with atomic force microscopy and polarization-modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), which featured the vibrational modes of the HA top layer capable of interacting specifically with glycoprotein CD44 receptors overexpressed in tumor cells. Though the CHI/HA LbL films cannot be considered as a traditional biosensor due to their limited selectivity, it was possible to distinguish prostate tumor cells in the range from 50 to 600 cells/µL in in vitro experiments with impedance spectroscopy. This was achieved by treating the impedance data with information visualization methods, which confirmed the distinguishing ability of the films by observing the absence of false positives in a series of control experiments. The CD44–HA interactions may, therefore, be exploited in clinical analyses and point-of-care diagnostics for cancer, particularly if computational methods are used to process the data.

There has been growing interest in using strong field enhancement and light localization in plasmonic nanostructures to control the polarization properties of light. Various experimental techniques are now used to fabricate twisted metallic nanoparticles and metasurfaces, where strongly enhanced chiral near-fields are used to intensify circular dichroism (CD) signals. In this review, state-of-the-art strategies to develop such chiral plasmonic nanoparticles and metasurfaces are summarized, with emphasis on the most recent trends for the design and development of functionalizable surfaces. The major objective is to perform enantiomer selection which is relevant in pharmaceutical applications and for biosensing. Enhanced sensing capabilities are key for the design and manufacture of lab-on-a-chip devices, commonly named point-of-care biosensing devices, which are promising for next-generation healthcare systems.

“Electronic tongues”, “taste sensors”, and similar devices (further named as “multisensor systems”, or MSS) have been studied and applied mostly for the analysis of edible analytes. This is not surprising, since the MSS development was sometimes inspired by the mainstream idea that they could substitute human gustatory tests. However, the basic principle behind multisensor systems—a combination of an array of cross-sensitive chemical sensors for liquid analysis and a machine learning engine for multivariate data processing—does not imply any limitations on the application of such systems for the analysis of inedible media. This review deals with the numerous MSS applications for the analysis of inedible analytes, among other things, for agricultural and medical purposes.

The recent development of silver nanostars (Ag-NSs) is promising for improved surface-enhanced sensing and spectroscopy, which may be further exploited if the mechanisms behind the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) are identified. Here, we show that LSPRs in Ag-NSs can be obtained with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations by considering the nanostars as combination of crossed nanorods (Ag-NRs). In particular, we demonstrate that an apparent tail at large wavelengths ( λ ≳ 700 nm) observed in the extinction spectra of Ag-NSs is due to a strong dipolar plasmon resonance, with no need to invoke heterogeneity (different number of arms) effects as is normally done in the literature. Our description also indicates a way to tune the strongest LSPR at desired wavelengths, which is useful for sensing applications.

In this work we take advantage of the polyelectrolyte character of some Brazilian native gums to fabricate electrically conductive, nanostructured films. The gums Sterculia urens, (caraia), Sterculia striata (chicha) or Anadenanthera macrocarpa Benth were assembled in conjunction with poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA) in the form of layered nanostructured films using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. All the LbL films displayed a well-defined electroactivity, as confirmed via cyclic voltammetry. In comparison to POMA LbL films fabricated with conventional polyelectrolytes (viz. poly(vinyl sulfonic acid)-PVS), the presence of the gums in the LbL films increased remarkably the electrochemical stability of the films.

Chitosan incorporated in the aqueous subphase is found to affect the Langmuir monolayers of cholesterol, causing the surface pressure and the surface potential isotherms to become more expanded. The mean molecular area per cholesterol molecule in the condensed monolayer increases from 53 Ų in the absence of chitosan to 61 Ų for a concentration of 0.100 mg/mL of chitosan in the subphase. If additional chitosan is incorporated in the subphase, no change is noted, which points to saturation in the effects from chitosan. The interaction between chitosan and cholesterol probably occurs via hydrogen bonding. The monolayer expansion is also manifested in the monolayer morphology, as indicated by Brewster angle microscopy measurements, where larger cholesterol domains are visualized when chitosan is present in the subphase.

This paper discusses fundamental concepts for the characterization of Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films, with emphasis on investigations of material properties at the molecular level. By way of illustration, results for phospholipid monolayers interacting with the drug dipyridamole are highlighted. These results were obtained with several techniques, including in situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, in addition to surface pressure and surface potential isotherms. Also mentioned are the difficulties in producing Langmuir and LB films from macromolecules, and how molecular-level interactions in mixed polymer LB films can be exploited in sensors.

A study is presented of the formation and optical properties of polymeric heterostructures from poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) and poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA) produced via the self-assembly technique. POMA layers were obtained in a non self-limiting process from its emeraldine salt, semiconducting form in HCl solution. Thermal conversion of PPV was performed at low temperatures with the substitution of the counter-ion Cl in the PPV precursor by a long sulfonic chain, the dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) ion. The optical properties of PPV films converted in this way are not affected by POMA, which can be used as transparent electrode of PPV luminescent devices.

Precision agriculture is crucial for increasing food output without expanding the cultivable area, which requires sensors to be deployed for controlling the level of nutrients in the soil. In this paper, we report on a microfluidic electronic tongue (e-tongue) based on impedance measurements which is capable of distinguishing soil samples enriched with plant macronutrients. The e-tongue setup consisted of an array of sensing units made with layer-by-layer films deposited onto gold interdigitated electrodes. Significantly, the sensing units could be reused with adequate reproducibility after a simple washing procedure, thus indicating that there is no cross-contamination in three independent sets of measurements. A high performance was achieved by treating the capacitance data with the multidimensional projection techniques Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Interactive Document Map (IDMAP), and Sammon’s Mapping. While an optimized performance was demonstrated with IDMAP and feature selection, during which data of a limited frequency range were used, the distinction of all soil samples was also possible with the well-established PCA analysis for measurements at a single frequency. The successful use of a simple microfluidic e-tongue for soil analysis paves the way for enhanced tools to support precision agriculture.

Abstract The strong enhancement and localization of electromagnetic field in plasmonic systems have found applications in many areas, which include sensing and biosensing. In this paper, an overview will be provided of the use of plasmonic phenomena in sensors and biosensors with emphasis on two main topics. The first is related to possible ways to enhance the performance of sensors and biosensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), where examples are given of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles, magnetoplasmonic effects and use of metamaterials for SPR sensing. The other topic is focused on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for sensing, for which uniform, flexible, and reproducible SERS substrates have been produced. With such recent developments, there is the prospect of improving sensitivity and lowering the limit of detection in order to overcome the limitations inherent in ultrasensitive detection of chemical and biological analytes, especially at single molecule levels.
