- Abstract
How the multiple facets of soil fungal diversity vary worldwide remains virtually unknown, hindering the management of this essential species-rich group. By sequencing high-resolution DNA markers in over 4000 topsoil samples from natural and human-altered ecosystems across all continents, we illustrate the distributions and drivers of different levels of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of fungi and their ecological groups. We show the impact of precipitation and temperature interactions on local fungal species richness (alpha diversity) across different climates. Our findings reveal how temperature drives fungal compositional turnover (beta diversity) and phylogenetic diversity, linking them with regional species richness (gamma diversity). We integrate fungi into the principles of global biodiversity distribution and present detailed maps for biodiversity conservation and modeling of global ecological processes.

- Abstract
Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

- Abstract
How the multiple facets of soil fungal diversity vary worldwide remains virtually unknown, hindering the management of this essential species-rich group. By sequencing high-resolution DNA markers in over 4000 topsoil samples from natural and human-altered ecosystems across all continents, we illustrate the distributions and drivers of different levels of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of fungi and their ecological groups. We show the impact of precipitation and temperature interactions on local fungal species richness (alpha diversity) across different climates. Our findings reveal how temperature drives fungal compositional turnover (beta diversity) and phylogenetic diversity, linking them with regional species richness (gamma diversity). We integrate fungi into the principles of global biodiversity distribution and present detailed maps for biodiversity conservation and modeling of global ecological processes.

The data are provided in two formats: TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) and GeoPackage formats, which are commonly used to store geospatially-referenced data. Alpha Diversity: `Alpha_S_*` files: These files contain estimates of alpha diversity (local species diversity) for each grid cell of a raster file. `Alpha_AOA_*` files: These files outline the 'Area of Applicability' for the alpha diversity estimates. `Alpha_Uncertainty_*` files: These files contain data related to the uncertainty of the alpha diversity predictions. Uncertainty here represents the range or degree of error associated with the diversity estimates. `Alpha_Hotspots_and_ProtectedAreas` contains information on fungal diversity hotspots and their area under protection (based on IUCN classification). - Abstract
Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here we used high-resolution sequencing to assess endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. - Abstract
Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

Väitekirja elektrooniline versioon ei sisalda publikatsioone, Erinevad seenerühmad on looduses olulised orgaanilise aine lagundajad, haigustekitajad või juursümbiondid, kes aitavad puudel omastada mineraalaineid. Puud mõjutavad oma ümbrust läbi varise ja juureeritiste. Puuliikide kooskasvamine loob segametsades erinevad elupaigalaigud, mis suurendab muude organismide elurikkust metsades, kus kasvab rohkem puuliike. Elurikkus suurendab ökosüsteemide tootlikkust ja stabiilsust muutuvate keskkonnatingimuste vastu. Enda doktoritöös käsitlen seente elurikkuse seost puude varise ja peremeestaimede liigirikkusega ning teiste puuliikide naabruse mõjuga. Leidsin, et mida rohkem sisaldab lagunev lehevaris erinevate puuliikide lehti, seda suurem on selles seente liigirikkus. Samas juurte liigirikkuse mõju seente mitmekesisusele on nõrk. Lehevarise koosseis määrab ka lagundajate ja taimepatogeenide liigilise koosseisu. Kuuse ektomükoriisaseente liigiline koosseis erineb kase–kuuse segametsa ning kuuse monokultuuri vahel. Kase naabrus mõjutab mulla keemilisi omadusi ja seeläbi ektomükoriissete seente kooslusi. Ektomükoriisaseente liigirikkus on globaalsel skaalal seotud peremeestaimede liigirikkusega, kuid regionaalsel tasemel on seosed mulla omaduste ja konkreetsete puuliikidega tähtsamad. Oma tööst järeldan, et metsa liigirikkus tõepoolest suurendab seente elurikkust, mõju tugevus sõltub aga konkreetsetest puuliikidest ning mulla ja muu taimkatte omadustest., Fungi play key roles in forest ecosystems. Various groups of fungi drive organic matter decomposition and soil nutrient cycling, act as tree root symbionts or cause diseases. Trees are influential components of forest habitats that modify their surroundings via shedding litter and root exudates, but little is known about the functional importance of tree species diversity on soil organisms and soil biological processes. Mixtures of tree species can create fine-scale environmental heterogeneity that supports higher biodiversity in forest stands. Biodiversity enhances productivity and stability, buffering ecosystems against changing environmental conditions. In this thesis, I examined fungal diversity in relation to plant litter, host plant diversity and tree neighbourhood effects. Leaf litter mixtures with higher plant species richness harboured higher fungal diversity, indicating that heterogeneity of resources in litter mixtures provides more habitats and allows a larger number of fungal species to co-exist. Conversely, the root litter richness effect on fungal diversity was weak. Furthermore, leaf litter composition had a strong effect on composition of saprotrophic and plant pathogenic fungi. Richness of ectomycorrhizal fungi was positively related to host plant richness at global scale. At regional scale, fungal richness correlated with plant richness, but this effect was related to improved soil conditions in mixed forests. Communities of ectomycorrhizal fungi on spruce roots differed in spruce monocultures and mixed stands of birch and spruce, which points to the influence of birch on soil quality. - Abstract
The cryptic lifestyle of most fungi necessitates molecular identification of the guild in environmental studies. Over the past decades, rapid development and affordability of molecular tools have tremendously improved insights of the fungal diversity in all ecosystems and habitats. Yet, in spite of the progress of molecular methods, knowledge about functional properties of the fungal taxa is vague and interpretation of environmental studies in an ecologically meaningful manner remains challenging. In order to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of environmental studies we introduce a user friendly traits and character database FungalTraits operating at genus and species hypothesis levels. Combining the information from previous efforts such as FUNGuild and FunFun together with involvement of expert knowledge, we reannotated 10,210 and 151 fungal and Stramenopila genera, respectively. This resulted in a stand-alone spreadsheet dataset covering 17 lifestyle related traits of fungal and Stramenopila genera, designed for rapid functional assignments of environmental studies. In order to assign the trait states to fungal species hypotheses, the scientific community of experts manually categorised and assigned available trait information to 697,413 fungal ITS sequences. On the basis of those sequences we were able to summarise trait and host information into 92,623 fungal species hypotheses at 1% dissimilarity threshold.

- Abstract
Compared with plants and animals, large-scale biogeographic patterns of microbes including fungi are poorly understood. By the use of a comparative phylogenetic approach and ancestral state reconstructions, we addressed the global biogeography, rate of evolution and evolutionary origin of the widely distributed ectomycorrhizal (EcM) /sebacina lineage that forms a large proportion of the Sebacinales order. We downloaded all publicly available internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and metadata and supplemented sequence information from three genes to construct dated phylogenies and test biogeographic hypotheses. The /sebacina lineage evolved 45-57Myr ago that groups it with relatively young EcM taxa in other studies. The most parsimonious origin for /sebacina is inferred to be North American temperate coniferous forests. Among biogeographic traits, region and biome exhibited stronger phylogenetic signal than host family. Consistent with the resource availability (environmental energy) hypothesis, the ITS region is evolving at a faster rate in tropical than nontropical regions. Most biogeographic regions exhibited substantial phylogenetic clustering suggesting a strong impact of dispersal limitation over a large geographic scale. In northern Holarctic regions, however, phylogenetic distances and phylogenetic grouping of isolates indicate multiple recent dispersal events.

15 páginas.- 6 figuras.- 93 referencias, Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general.
