The development of van der Waals heterostructures has introduced unconventional phenomena that emerge at atomically precise interfaces. For example, interlayer excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides show intriguing optical properties at low temperatures. Here we report on room-temperature observation of interface excitons in mixed-dimensional heterostructures consisting of two-dimensional tungsten diselenide and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes. Bright emission peaks originating from the interface are identified, spanning a broad energy range within the telecommunication wavelengths. The effect of band alignment is investigated by systematically varying the nanotube bandgap, and we assign the new peaks to interface excitons as they only appear in type-II heterostructures. Room-temperature localization of low-energy interface excitons is indicated by extended lifetimes as well as small excitation saturation powers, and photon correlation measurements confirm single-photon emission. Nanomaterials exhibit unique optical phenomena, in particular excitonic quantum processes occurring at room temperature. The low dimensionality, however, imposes strict requirements for conventional optical excitation, and an approach for bypassing such restrictions is desirable. Here we report on exciton transfer in carbon-nanotube/tungsten-diselenide heterostructures, where band alignment can be systematically varied. The mixed-dimensional heterostructures display a pronounced exciton reservoir effect where the longer-lifetime excitons within the two-dimensional semiconductor are funneled into carbon nanotubes through diffusion. This new excitation pathway presents several advantages, including larger absorption areas, broadband spectral response, and polarization-independent efficiency. When band alignment is resonant, we observe substantially more efficient excitation via tungsten diselenide compared to direct excitation of the nanotube. We further demonstrate simultaneous bright emission from an array of carbon nanotubes with varied chiralities and orientations. The unique optical properties of two-dimensional layered materials are attractive for achieving increased functionality in integrated photonics. Owing to the van der Waals nature, these materials are ideal for integrating with nanoscale photonic structures. Here we report on carefully designed air-mode silicon photonic crystal nanobeam cavities for efficient control through two-dimensional materials. By systematically investigating various types and thickness of two-dimensional materials, we are able to show that enhanced responsivity allows for giant shifts of the resonant wavelength. With atomically precise thickness over a macroscopic area, few-layer flakes give rise to quantization of the mode shifts. We extract the dielectric constant of the flakes and find that it is independent of the layer number down to a monolayer. Flexible reconfiguration of a cavity is demonstrated by stacking and removing ultrathin flakes. Single-walled carbon nanotubes have been a candidate for outperforming silicon in ultrascaled transistors, but the realization of nanotube-based integrated circuits requires dense arrays of purely semiconducting species. Control over kinetics and thermodynamics in tube-catalyst systems plays a key role for direct growth of such nanotube arrays, and further progress requires the comprehensive understanding of seemingly contradictory reports on the growth kinetics. Here, we propose a universal kinetic model and provide its quantitative verification by ethanol-based isotope labeling experiments. While the removal of carbon from catalysts dominates the growth kinetics under a low supply of precursors, our kinetic model and experiments demonstrate that chirality-dependent growth rates emerge when sufficient amounts of carbon and etching agents are co-supplied. As the model can be extended to create kinetic maps as a function of gas compositions, our findings resolve discrepancies in literature and offer rational strategies for chirality selective growth for practical applications., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Organic color centers in single-walled carbon nanotubes have demonstrated exceptional ability to generate single photons at room temperature in the telecom range. Combining the color centers with pristine air-suspended tubes would be desirable for improved performance, but all current synthetic methods occur in solution which makes them incompatible. Here we demonstrate formation of color centers in air-suspended nanotubes using vapor-phase reaction. Functionalization is directly verified on the same nanotubes by photoluminescence spectroscopy, with unambiguous statistics from more than a few thousand individual nanotubes. The color centers show a strong diameter-dependent emission intensity, which can be explained with a theoretical model for chemical reactivity taking into account strain along the tube curvature. We are also able to estimate the defect density by comparing the experiments with simulations based on a one-dimensional diffusion equation, whereas the analysis of diameter dependent peak energies gives insight to the nature of the dopant states. Time-resolved measurements show a longer lifetime for color center emission compared to E$_{11}$ exciton states. Our results highlight the influence of the tube structure on vapor-phase reactivity and emission properties, providing guidelines for development of high-performance near-infrared quantum light sources., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We demonstrate an individual single-walled carbon nanotube light emitter integrated onto a microcavity and a waveguide operating in the telecom wavelength regime. Light emission from the carbon nanotube is enhanced at the cavity resonance and is efficiently extracted from the waveguide facet. We have transferred carbon nanotubes to a nanobeam cavity with a dry process, ensuring that an individual carbon nanotube is used. The guided light emission from a chirality-identified single carbon nanotube has a narrow linewidth of less than 1.3 nm and an off-resonance rejection of $\sim$17 dB. The waveguide-coupled device configuration is compatible with fully integrated on-chip designs and is promising for carbon-nanotube-based photonics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

When continued device scaling reaches the ultimate limit imposed by atoms, technology based on atomically precise structures is expected to emerge. Device fabrication will then require building blocks with identified atomic arrangements and assembly of the components without contamination. Here we report on a versatile dry transfer technique for deterministic placement of optical-quality carbon nanotubes. Single-crystalline anthracene is used as a medium which readily sublimes by mild heating, leaving behind clean nanotubes and thus enabling bright photoluminescence. We are able to position nanotubes of a desired chirality with a sub-micron accuracy under in-situ optical monitoring, thereby demonstrating deterministic coupling of a nanotube to a photonic crystal nanobeam cavity. A cross junction structure is also designed and constructed by repeating the nanotube transfer, where intertube exciton transfer is observed. Hexagonal boron nitride is widely used as a substrate for two-dimensional materials in both electronic and photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate that two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride is also an ideal substrate for one-dimensional single-walled carbon nanotubes. Nanotubes directly attached to hexagonal boron nitride show bright photoluminescence with narrow linewidth at room temperature, comparable to air-suspended nanotubes. Using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, we unambiguously assign the chiralities of nanotubes on boron nitride by tracking individual tubes before and after contact with boron nitride. Although hexagonal boron nitride has a low dielectric constant and is attached to only one side of the nanotubes, we observe that optical transition energies are redshifted as much as ~50 meV from the air-suspended nanotubes. We also perform statistical measurements on more than 400 tubes, and the redshifts are found to be dependent on tube diameter. Highly efficient exciton-exciton annihilation process unique to one-dimensional systems is utilized for super-resolution imaging of air-suspended carbon nanotubes. Through the comparison of fluorescence signals in linear and sublinear regimes at different excitation powers, we extract the efficiency of the annihilation processes using conventional confocal microscopy. Spatial images of the annihilation rate of the excitons have resolution beyond the diffraction limit. We investigate excitation power dependence of the annihilation processes by experiment and Monte Carlo simulation, and the resolution improvement of the annihilation images can be quantitatively explained by the superlinearity of the annihilation process. We have also developed another method in which the cubic dependence of the annihilation rate on exciton density is utilized to achieve further sharpening of single nanotube images., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate adsorption effects of copper phthalocyanine molecules on excitons and trions in air-suspended carbon nanotubes. Using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, we observe that exciton energy redshifts gradually with the molecular deposition thickness. The trion emission is also observed at large deposition amounts, which indicates charge transfer between the phthalocyanine molecules and carbon nanotubes. Analysis of the spectra for individual tubes reveal a correlation between the exciton-trion energy separation and the exciton emission energy, showing that the many-body interaction energies scale similarly with the molecular dielectric screening., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

In a dedicated test setup at the Kamioka Observatory we studied pulse shape discrimination (PSD) in liquid xenon (LXe) for dark matter searches. PSD in LXe was based on the observation that scintillation light from electron events was emitted over a longer period of time than that of nuclear recoil events, and our method used a simple ratio of early to total scintillation light emission in a single scintillation event. Requiring an efficiency of 50% for nuclear recoil retention we reduced the electron background to 7.7\pm1.1(stat)\pm1.2 0.6(sys)\times10-2 at energies between 4.8 and 7.2 keVee and to 7.7\pm2.8(stat)\pm2.5 2.8(sys)\times10-3 at energies between 9.6 and 12 keVee for a scintillation light yield of 20.9 p.e./keV. Further study was done by masking some of that light to reduce this yield to 4.6 p.e./keV, the same method results in an electron event reduction of 2.4\pm0.2(stat)\pm0.3 0.2(sys)\times10-1 for the lower of the energy regions above. We also observe that in contrast to nuclear recoils the fluctuations in our early to total ratio for electron events are larger than expected from statistical fluctuations., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures
