The ThIrSi superconductor, with $T_c = 6.5$ K, is expected to show unusual features in view of its noncentrosymmetric structure and the presence of heavy elements featuring a sizable spin-orbit coupling. Here, we report a comprehensive study of its electronic properties by means of local-probe techniques: muon-spin rotation and relaxation ({\textmu}SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Both the superfluid density $\rho_\mathrm{sc}(T)$ (determined via transverse-field {\textmu}SR) and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}(T)$ (determined via NMR) suggest a nodeless superconductivity. Furthermore, the absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below $T_c$, as evinced from zero-field {\textmu}SR measurements, indicates a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of ThIrSi. Temperature-dependent upper critical fields as well as field-dependent superconducting muon-spin relaxations suggest the presence of multiple superconducting gaps in ThIrSi., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We report a comprehensive study of the Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$ superconductors, with interstitial carbon comprised between 0 and 0.3. At a macroscopic level, their superconductivity, with $T_c$ ranging from 4.5 to 6.3 K, was investigated via electrical-resistivity-, magnetic-susceptibility-, and specific-heat measurements. The upper critical fields $\mu_0H_\mathrm{c2}$ $\sim$ 7 T were determined mostly from measurements of the electrical resistivity in applied magnetic fields. The microscopic electronic properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. In the normal state, NMR relaxation data indicate an almost ideal metallic behavior, confirmed by band-structure calculations, which suggest a relatively high electronic density of states at the Fermi level, dominated by the Zr 4$d$ orbitals. The low-temperature superfluid density, obtained via transverse-field $\mu$SR, suggests a fully-gapped superconducting state in Zr$_5$Pt$_3$ and Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_{0.3}$, with a zero-temperature gap $\Delta_0$ = 1.20 and 0.60 meV and a magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_0$ = 333 and 493 nm, respectively. The exponential dependence of the NMR relaxation rates below $T_c$ further supports a nodeless superconductivity. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below the onset of superconductivity, as determined from zero-field $\mu$SR measurements, confirms a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$. In contrast to a previous study, our $\mu$SR and NMR results suggest a conventional superconductivity in the Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$ family, independent of the C content., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted by Phys. We report on a microscopic study of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor W$_3$Al$_2$C (with $T_c$ = 7.6 K), mostly by means of $^{27}$Al- and $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Since in this material the density of states at the Fermi level is dominated by the tungsten's 5$d$ orbitals, we expect a sizeable spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect. The normal-state electronic properties of W$_3$Al$_2$C resemble those of a standard metal, but with a Korringa product $1/(T_{1}T)$ significantly smaller than that of metallic Al, reflecting the marginal role played by $s$-electrons. In the superconducting state, we observe a reduction of the Knight shift and an exponential decrease of the NMR relaxation rate $1/T_1$, typical of $s$-wave superconductivity. This is further supported by the observation of a small but distinct coherence peak just below $T_c$ in the $^{13}$C NMR relaxation-rate, in agreement with the fully-gapped superconducting state inferred from the electronic specific-heat data well below $T_c$. The above features are compared to those of members of the same family, in particular, Mo$_3$Al$_2$C, often claimed to exhibit unconventional superconductivity. We discuss why, despite the enhanced SOC, W$_3$Al$_2$C does not show spin-triplet features in its superconducting state and consider the broader consequences of our results for noncentrosymmetric superconductors in general., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted by J. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
Although the frustrated spin chain (zigzag chain) is a Drosophila of frustrated magnetism, the understanding of a pair of coupled zigzag chains (frustrated spin ladder) in a magnetic field is incomplete. We address this problem through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on $\text{BiCu}_2\text{PO}_6$ in magnetic fields up to 45 T, revealing a field-induced spiral magnetic structure. Conjointly, we present advanced numerical calculations showing that even moderate rung coupling dramatically simplifies the phase diagram below half-saturation magnetization by stabilizing a field-induced chiral phase. Surprisingly for a one-dimensional model, this phase and its response to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions adhere to classical expectations. While explaining the behavior at the highest accessible magnetic fields, our results imply a different origin for the solitonic phases occurring at lower fields in $\text{BiCu}_2\text{PO}_6$. An exciting possibility is that the known, DM-mediated coupling between chirality and crystal lattice gives rise to a new kind of spin-Peierls instability., Comment: Revised manuscript, 7 pages, 6 figures

We report a comprehensive study of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$_3$P. Its bulk superconductivity, with $T_c = 5.5$ K, was characterized via electrical resistivity, magnetization, and heat-capacity measurements, while its microscopic electronic properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. In the normal state, NMR relaxation data indicate an almost ideal metallic behavior, confirmed by band-structure calculations, which suggest a relatively high electron density of states, dominated by the Mo $4d$-orbitals. The low-temperature superfluid density, determined via transverse-field $\mu$SR and electronic specific heat, suggest a fully-gapped superconducting state in Mo$_3$P, with $\Delta_0= 0.83$ meV, the same as the BCS gap value in the weak-coupling case, and a zero-temperature magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_0 = 126$ nm. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below the onset of superconductivity, as determined from zero-field $\mu$SR measurements, indicates a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of Mo$_3$P and, hence, spin-singlet pairing., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, accepted by Phys. Cu(pz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$ (with pz denoting pyrazine C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$) is a two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet with $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ = 4.24 K. Due to a persisting focus on the low-temperature magnetic properties, its room-temperature structural and physical properties caught no attention up to now. Here we report a study of the structural features of Cu(pz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase, up to 330 K. By employing magnetization, specific heat, $^{35}$Cl nuclear magnetic resonance, and neutron diffraction measurements, we provide evidence of a second-order phase transition at $T^{\star}$ = 294 K, not reported before. The absence of a magnetic ordering across $T^{\star}$ in the magnetization data, yet the presence of a sizable anomaly in the specific heat, suggest a structural order-to-disorder type transition. NMR and neutron-diffraction data corroborate our conjecture, by revealing subtle angular distortions of the pyrazine rings and of ClO$^-_4$ counteranion tetrahedra, shown to adopt a configuration of higher symmetry above the transition temperature., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
Heisenberg-type spin-chain materials have been extensively studied over the years, yet not much is known about their behavior in the presence of disorder. Starting from BaCu$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$, a typical spin-1/2 chain system, we investigate a series of compounds with different degrees of bond disorder, where the systematic replacement of Si with Ge results in a re-modulation of the Cu$^{2+}$ exchange interactions. By combining magnetometry measurements with nuclear magnetic resonance studies we follow the evolution of the disorder-related properties from the well-ordered BaCu$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$ to the maximally disordered BaCu$_2$SiGeO$_7$. Our data indicate that already a weak degree of disorder of only 5% Ge, apart from reducing the 3D magnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$ quite effectively, induces a qualitatively different state in the paramagnetic regime. At maximum disorder our data indicate that this state may be identified with the theoretically predicted random singlet (RS) state. With decreasing disorder the extension of the RS regime at temperatures above $T_\mathrm{N}$ is reduced, yet its influence is clearly manifest, particularly in the features of NMR relaxation data., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The low-temperature magnetic properties of \tcr{polycrystalline} Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a candidate material for the realization of a quantum spin-liquid state, were investigated by means of muon-spin relaxation and nuclear magnetic resonance methods under chemical and hydrostatic pressure. The Li-for-Na chemical substitution promotes an inhomogeneous magnetic order, whereas hydrostatic pressure (up to 3.9\,GPa) results in an enhancement of the ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$. In the first case, the inhomogeneous magnetic order suggests either short- or long-range correlations of broadly distributed $j=\,$\textonehalf\ Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moments, reflecting local disorder. The increase of $T_\mathrm{N}$ under applied pressure points at an increased strength of three dimensional interactions arising from interlayer compression.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
The recently synthesized ThFeAsN iron-pnictide superconductor exhibits a $T_c$ of 30 K, the highest of the 1111-type series in absence of chemical doping. To understand how pressure affects its electronic properties, we carried out microscopic investigations up to 3 GPa via magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon-spin rotation experiments. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{75}$As Knight shift, the spin-lattice relaxation rates, and the magnetic penetration depth suggest a multi-band $s^{\pm}$-wave gap symmetry in the dirty limit, while the gap-to-$T_c$ ratio $\Delta/k_\mathrm{B}T_c$ hints at a strong-coupling scenario. Pressure modulates the geometrical parameters, thus reducing $T_c$, as well as $T_m$, the temperature where magnetic-relaxation rates are maximized, both at the same rate of approximately -1.1 K/GPa. This decrease of $T_c$ with pressure is consistent with band-structure calculations, which relate it to the deformation of the Fe 3$d_{z^2}$ orbitals., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
Similar to chemical doping, pressure produces and stabilizes new phases of known materials, whose properties may differ greatly from those of their standard counterparts. Here, by considering a series of LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$O iron-pnictides synthesized under high-pressure high-temperature conditions, we investigate the simultaneous effects of pressure and isoelectronic doping in the 1111 family. Results of numerous macro- and microscopic technique measurements, unambiguously show a radically different phase diagram for the pressure-grown materials, characterized by the lack of magnetic order and the persistence of superconductivity across the whole $0.3 \leq x \leq 0.7$ doping range. This unexpected scenario is accompanied by a branching in the electronic properties across $x = 0.5$, involving both the normal and superconducting phases. Most notably, the superconducting order parameter evolves from nodal (for $x < 0.5$) to nodeless (for $x \geq 0.5$), in clear contrast to other 1111 and 122 iron-based materials grown under ambient-pressure conditions., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, Suppl. material

In this work we discuss the rotational structure of Rydberg molecules. We calculate the complete wave function in a laboratory fixed frame and derive the transition matrix elements for the pho- toassociation of free ground state atoms. We discuss the implications for the excitation of different rotational states as well as the shape of the angular nuclear wave function. We find a rather com- plex shape and unintuitive coupling strengths, depending on the angular momenta coupling that are relevant for the states. This work explains the different steps to calculate the wave functions and the transition matrix elements in a way, that they can be directly transferred to different molecular states, atomic species or molecular coupling cases., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

SrAuSi$_3$ is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor (NCS) with $T_c$ = 1.54 K, which to date has been studied only via macroscopic techniques. By combining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and muon-spin rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements we investigate both the normal and the superconducting phase of SrAuSi$_3$ at a local level. In the normal phase, our data indicate a standard metallic behavior with weak electron correlations and a Korringa constant $S_\mathrm{exp} = 1.31 \times 10^{-5}$ sK. The latter, twice the theoretical value, can be justified by the Moriya theory of exchange enhancement. In the superconducting phase, the material exhibits conventional BCS-type superconductivity with a weak-coupling s-wave pairing, a gap value $\Delta(0)$ = 0.213(2) meV, and a magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(0)$ = 398(2) nm. The experimental proof of weak correlations in SrAuSi$_{3}$ implies that correlation effects can be decoupled from those of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC), thus enabling accurate band-structure calculations in the weakly-correlated NCSs., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We report on our investigation of the electronic structure of Ti$_2$O$_3$ using (hard) x-ray photoelectron and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. From the distinct satellite structures in the spectra we have been able to establish unambiguously that the Ti-Ti $c$-axis dimer in the corundum crystal structure is electronically present and forms an $a_{1g}a_{1g}$ molecular singlet in the low temperature insulating phase. Upon heating we observed a considerable spectral weight transfer to lower energies with orbital reconstruction. The insulator-metal transition may be viewed as a transition from a solid of isolated Ti-Ti molecules into a solid of electronically partially broken dimers where the Ti ions acquire additional hopping in the $a$-$b$ plane via the $e_g^{\pi}$ channel, the opening of which requires the consideration of the multiplet structure of the on-site Coulomb interaction., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
Unlike the widely studied ReFeAsO series, the newly discovered iron-based superconductor ThFeAsN exhibits a remarkably high critical temperature of 30 K, without chemical doping or external pressure. Here we investigate in detail its magnetic and superconducting properties via muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques and show that ThFeAsN exhibits strong magnetic fluctuations, suppressed below 35 K, but no magnetic order. This contrasts strongly with the ReFeAsO series, where stoichiometric parent materials order antiferromagnetically and superconductivity appears only upon doping. The ThFeAsN case indicates that Fermi-surface modifications due to structural distortions and correlation effects are as important as doping in inducing superconductivity. The direct competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, which in ThFeAsN (as in LiFeAs) occurs at already zero doping, may indicate a significant deviation of the $s$-wave superconducting gap in this compound from the standard $s^{\pm}$ scenario., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Unlike the widely studied $s$-type two-gap superconductor MgB$_2$, the chemically similar compounds ZrB$_2$ and HfB$_2$ do not superconduct above 1 K. Yet, it has been shown that small amounts of self- or extrinsic doping (in particular with vanadium), can induce superconductivity in these materials. Based on results of different macro- and microscopic measurements, including magnetometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), resistivity, and muon-spin rotation ($\mu$SR), we present a comparative study of Zr$_{0.96}$V$_{0.04}$B$_2$ and Hf$_{0.97}$V$_{0.03}$B$_2$. Their key magnetic and superconducting features are determined and the results are considered within the theoretical framework of multiband superconductivity proposed for MgB$_2$. The RNiO$_3$ perovskites are known to order antiferromagnetically below a material-dependent N\'eel temperature $T_\text{N}$. We report experimental evidence indicating the existence of a second magnetically-ordered phase in TlNiO$_3$ above $T_\text{N} = 104$ K, obtained using nuclear magnetic resonance and muon spin rotation spectroscopy. The new phase, which persists up to a temperature $T_\text{N}^* = 202$ K, is suppressed by the application of an external magnetic field of approximately 1 T. It is not yet known if such a phase also exists in other perovskite nickelates., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
Cu(pz)2(ClO4)2 (with pz denoting pyrazine, C4H4N2) is among the best realizations of a two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet. Below T_N = 4.21 K, its weak interlayer couplings induce a 3D magnetic order, strongly influenced by external magnetic fields and/or hydrostatic pressure. Previous work, focusing on the [H, T] phase diagram, identified a spin-flop transition, resulting in a field-tunable bicritical point. However, the influence of external pressure has not been investigated yet. Here we explore the extended [p, H, T] phase diagram of Cu(pz)2(ClO4)2 under pressures up to 12 kbar and magnetic fields up to 7.1 T, via magnetometry and 35Cl nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The application of magnetic fields enhances T_XY , the crossover temperature from the Heisenberg to the XY model, thus pointing to an enhancement of the effective anisotropy. The applied pressure has an opposite effect [dT_N/dp = 0.050(8) K/kbar], as it modifies marginally the interlayer couplings, but likely changes more significantly the orbital reorientation and the square-lattice deformation. This results in a remodeling of the effective Hamiltonian, whereby the field and pressure effects compensate each other. Finally, by comparing the experimental data with numerical simulations we estimate T_BKT, the temperature of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless topological transition and argue why it is inaccessible in our case., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

We report a study of the normal- and superconducting-state electronic properties of the centrosymmetric compound SrPt3P via 31P nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) and magnetometry investigations. Essential features such as a sharp drop of the Knight shift at T < Tc and an exponential decrease of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation ratio 1/(T1T) below Tc are consistent with an s-wave electron pairing in SrPt3P, although a direct confirmation in the form of a Hebel-Slichter-type peak is lacking. Normal-state NMR data at T < 50 K indicate conventional features of the conduction electrons, typical of simple metals such as lithium or silver. Our data are finally compared with available NMR results for the noncentrosymmetric superconductors LaPt$_3$Si and CePt$_3$Si, which adopt similar crystal structures., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Controlling strongly interacting many-body systems enables the creation of tailored quantum matter, with properties transcending those based solely on single particle physics. Atomic ensembles which are optically driven to a Rydberg state provide many examples of this, such as atom-atom entanglement, many-body Rabi oscillations, strong photon-photon interaction and spatial pair correlations. In its most basic form, Rydberg quantum matter consists of an isolated ensemble of strongly interacting atoms spatially confined to the blockade volume - a so-called superatom. Here we demonstrate the controlled creation and characterization of an isolated mesoscopic superatom by means of accurate density engineering and excitation to Rydberg $p$-states. Its variable size allows to investigate the transition from effective two-level physics for strong confinement to many-body phenomena in extended systems. By monitoring continuous laser-induced ionization we observe a strongly anti-bunched ion emission under blockade conditions and extremely bunched ion emission under off-resonant excitation. Our experimental setup enables in vivo measurements of the superatom, yielding insight into both excitation statistics and dynamics. We anticipate straightforward applications in quantum optics and quantum information as well as future experiments on many-body physics., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report on the realization of high resolution electron microscopy of Rydberg-excited ultracold atomic samples. The implementation of an ultraviolet laser system allows us to excite the atom, with a single-photon transition, to Rydberg states. By using the electron microscopy technique during the Rydberg excitation of the atoms, we observe a giant enhancement in the production of ions. This is due to $l$-changing collisions, which broaden the Rydberg level and therefore increase the excitation rate of Rydberg atoms. Our results pave the way for the high resolution spatial detection of Rydberg atoms in an atomic sample.

The disordered quasi-1D magnet BaCu2SiGeO7 is considered as one of the best physical realizations of the random Heisenberg chain model, which features an irregular distribution of the exchange parameters and whose ground state is predicted to be the scarcely investigated random-singlet state (RSS). Based on extensive 29Si NMR and magnetization studies of BaCu2SiGeO7, combined with numerical Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain remarkable quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions of the random Heisenberg chain model and strong indications for the formation of a random-singlet state at low temperatures in this compound. As a local probe, NMR is a well-adapted technique for studying the magnetism of disordered systems. In this case it also reveals an additional local transverse staggered field (LTSF), which affects the low-temperature properties of the RSS. The proposed model Hamiltonian satisfactorily accounts for the temperature dependence of the NMR line shapes., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We report the observation of a stepwise "melting" of the low-temperature Na-vacancy order in the layered transition metal oxide Na0.7CoO2. High-resolution neutron powder diffraction indicates the existence of two first-order structural transitions, one at T1 = 290 K, followed by a second at T2 = 400 K. Detailed analysis reveals that both transitions are linked to changes in the Na mobility. Our data are consistent with a two-step disappearance of Na-vacancy order through the successive opening of first quasi-1D (T1 > T > T2) and then 2D (T > T2) Na diffusion paths. These results shed new light on previous, seemingly incompatible, experimental interpretations regarding the relationship between Na-vacancy order and Na dynamics in this material. They also represent an important step towards the tuning of physical properties and the design of tailored functional materials through an improved control and understanding of ionic diffusion., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted by PRL

We experimentally investigate the action of a localized dissipative potential on a macroscopic matter wave, which we implement by shining an electron beam on an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We measure the losses induced by the dissipative potential as a function of the dissipation strength observing a paradoxical behavior when the strength of the dissipation exceeds a critical limit: for an increase of the dissipation rate the number of atoms lost from the BEC becomes lower. We repeat the experiment for different parameters of the electron beam and we compare our results with a simple theoretical model, finding excellent agreement. By monitoring the dynamics induced by the dissipative defect we identify the mechanisms which are responsible for the observed paradoxical behavior. We finally demonstrate the link between our dissipative dynamics and the measurement of the density distribution of the BEC allowing for a generalized definition of the Zeno effect. Due to the high degree of control on every parameter, our system is a promising candidate for the engineering of fully governable open quantum systems.

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The field-induced quantum phase transitions (QPT) of the spin ladder material Bi(Cu(1-x)Znx)2PO6 have been investigated via 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on single-crystal samples with x = 0 and x = 0.01. Measurements at temperatures between 0.25 K and 20 K in magnetic fields up to 31 T served to establish the nature of the various phases. In BiCu2PO6, an incommensurate (IC) magnetic order develops above a critical field mu0*H(c1) ~ 21 T; the field and temperature dependences of the NMR lines and the resulting model for the spin structure are discussed. Supported by results of Density-Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations it is argued that the observed field-induced IC order involves the formation of a magnetic-soliton lattice. An additional QPT is predicted to occur at H > H(c1). For x = 0.01, this IC order is found to be stable against site disorder, although with a renormalized critical field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + Supplementary material

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We present a detailed analysis of the phase diagram of antiferromagnets with competing exchange-driven and field-induced order parameters. By using the quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCu_2Si_2O_7 as a test case, we demonstrate that a model based on a Ginzburg-Landau type of approach provides an adequate description of both the magnetization process and of the phase diagram. The developed model not only accounts correctly for the observed spin-reorientation transitions, but it predicts also their unusual angular dependence., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain materials are known to substantially alter their static and dynamic properties when experiencing an effective transverse staggered field originating from the varying local environment of the individual spins. We present a temperature-, angular- and field-dependent 29Si NMR study of the model compound BaCu2Si2O7. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of the divergent low-temperature transverse susceptibility, predicted by theory for spin chains in coexisting longitudinal and transverse staggered fields. Our analysis first employs a finite-temperature "Density Matrix Renormalization Group" (DMRG) study of the relevant one-dimensional Hamiltonian. Next we compare our numerical with the presently known analytical results. With an analysis based on crystal symmetries we show how the anisotropic contribution to the sample magnetization is experimentally accessible even below the ordering temperature, in spite of its competition with the collinear order parameter of the antiferromagnetic phase. The modification of static and dynamic properties of the system due to the presence of a local transverse staggered field (LTSF) acting on the one-dimensional spin array are argued to cause the unusual spin reorientation transitions observed in BaCu2Si2O7. On the basis of a Ginzburg-Landau type analysis, we discuss aspects of competing spin structures in the presence of magnetic order and the enhanced transverse susceptibility., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Building on the recent experimental achievements obtained with scanning electron microscopy on ultracold atoms, we study one-dimensional Bose gases in the crossover between the weakly (quasi-condensate) and the strongly interacting (Tonks-Girardeau) regime. We measure the temporal two-particle correlation function and compare it with calculations performed using the Time Evolving Block Decimation algorithm. More pronounced antibunching is observed when entering the more strongly interacting regime. Even though this mimics the onset of a fermionic behavior, we highlight that the exact and simple duality between 1D bosons and fermions does not hold when such dynamical response is probed. The onset of fermionization is also reflected in the density distribution, which we measure \emph{in situ} to extract the relevant parameters and to identify the different regimes. Our results show agreement between experiment and theory and give new insight into the dynamics of strongly correlated many-body systems.

We characterize the two-photon excitation of an ultracold gas of Rubidium atoms to Rydberg states analysing the induced atomic losses from an optical dipole trap. Extending the duration of the Rydberg excitation to several ms, the ground state atoms are continuously coupled to the formed positively charged plasma. In this regime we measure the $n$-dependence of the blockade effect and we characterise the interaction of the excited states and the ground state with the plasma. We also investigate the influence of the quasi-electrostatic trapping potential on the system, confirming the validity of the ponderomotive model for states with $20\leq n\leq 120$.

We theoretically demonstrate the possibility to observe the macroscopic Zeno effect for nonlinear waveguides with a localized dissipation. We show the existence of stable stationary flows, which are balanced by the losses in the dissipative domain. The macroscopic Zeno effect manifests itself in the non-monotonic dependence of the stationary flow on the strength of the dissipation. In particular, we highlight the importance of the parameters of the dissipation to observe the phenomenon. Our results are applicable to a large variety of systems, including condensates of atoms or quasi-particles and optical waveguides., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev. Lett

We studied the (001/2) diffraction peak in the low-temperature phase of magnetite (Fe3O4) using resonant soft x-ray diffraction (RSXD) at the Fe-L2,3 and O-K resonance. We studied both molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) grown thin films and in-situ cleaved single crystals. From the comparison we have been able to determine quantitatively the contribution of intrinsic absorption effects, thereby arriving at a consistent result for the (001/2) diffraction peak spectrum. Our data also allow for the identification of extrinsic effects, e.g. for a detailed modeling of the spectra in case a "dead" surface layer is present that is only absorbing photons but does not contribute to the scattering signal., Comment: to appear in Phys. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the 29Si spin-lattice relaxation time T1 were used to probe the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain compound BaCu2(Si(1-x)Gex)2O7. Remarkable differences between the pure (x = 0) and the fully random (x = 0.5) case are observed, indicating that randomness generates a distribution of local magnetic relaxations. This distribution, which is reflected in a stretched exponential NMR relaxation, exhibits a progressive broadening with decreasing temperature, caused by a growing inequivalence of magnetic sites. Compelling independent evidence for the influence of randomness is also obtained from magnetization data and Monte Carlo calculations. These results suggest the formation of random-singlet states in this class of materials, as previously predicted by theory., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We report on the local electronic structure of Fe impurities in MgO thin films. Using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) we verified that the Fe impurities are all in the 2+ valence state. The fine details in the line shape of the Fe $L_{2,3}$ edges provide direct evidence for the presence of a dynamical Jahn-Teller distortion. We are able to determine the magnitude of the effective $D_{4h}$ crystal field energies. We also observed a strong temperature dependence in the spectra which we can attribute to the thermal population of low-lying excited states that are present due to the spin-orbit coupling in the Fe 3d. Using this Fe$^{2+}$ impurity system as an example, we show that an accurate measurement of the orbital moment in Fe$_3$O$_4$ will provide a direct estimate for the effective local low-symmetry crystal fields on the Fe$^{2+}$ sites, important for the theoretical modeling of the formation of orbital ordering.

We report on a new experimental platform for the measurement of absolute scattering cross-sections. The target atoms are trapped in an optical dipole trap and are exposed to an incident particle beam. The exponential decay of the atom number directly yields the absolute total scattering cross-section. The technique can be applied to any atomic or molecular species that can be prepared in an optical dipole trap and provides a large variety of possible scattering scenarios.

We have measured the AC-Stark shift of the $14D_{5/2}$ Rydberg state of rubidium 87 in an optical dipole trap formed by a focussed CO$_2$-laser. We find good quantitative agreement with the model of a free electron experiencing a ponderomotive potential in the light field. In order to reproduce the observed spectra we take into account the broadening of the Rydberg state due to photoionization. The extracted cross-section is compatible with previous measurements on neighboring Rydberg states.

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We studied the stripe phase of La1.8Sr0.2NiO4 using neutron diffraction, resonant soft x-ray diffraction (RSXD) at the Ni L2,3 edges, and resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) at the Ni K threshold. Differences in the q-space resolution of the different techniques have to be taken into account for a proper evaluation of diffraction intensities associated with the spin and charge order superstructures. We find that in the RSXD experiment the spin and charge order peaks show the same temperature dependence. In the neutron experiment by contrast, the spin and charge signals follow quite different temperature behaviors. We infer that fluctuating magnetic order contributes considerably to the magnetic RSXD signal and we suggest that this result may open an interesting experimental approach to search for fluctuating order in other systems by comparing RSXD and neutron diffraction data.

We report a study of the low-temperature high-pressure phase diagram of the intermetallic compound PrCu$_2$, by means of molecular-field calculations and $^{63,65}$Cu nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure. The pressure-induced magnetically-ordered phase can be accounted for by considering the influence of the crystal electric field on the $4f$ electron orbitals of the Pr$^{3+}$ ions and by introducing a pressure-dependent exchange interaction between the corresponding local magnetic moments. Our experimental data suggest that the order in the induced antiferromagnetic phase is incommensurate. The role of magnetic fluctuations both at high and low pressures is also discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J. B

Data of 23Na NMR spectra- and relaxation measurements are interpreted as suggesting that, upon increasing temperature the Na layers in Na0.8CoO2 adopt a 2D liquid state at T=291 K. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We studied the resonant diffraction signal from stepped surfaces of SrTiO3 at the Ti 2p -> 3d (L2,3) resonance in comparison with x-ray absorption (XAS) and specular reflectivity data. The steps on the surface form an artificial superstructure suited as a model system for resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A small step density on the surface is sufficient to produce a well defined diffraction peak, showing the high sensitivity of the method. At larger incidence angles, the resonant diffraction spectrum from the steps on the surface resembles the spectrum for specular reflectivity. Both deviate from the XAS data in the relative peak intensities and positions of the peak maxima. We determined the optical parameters of the sample across the resonance and found that the differences between the XAS and scattering spectra reflect the different quantities probed in the different signals. When recorded at low incidence or detection angles, XAS and specular reflectivity spectra are distorted by the changes of the angle of total reflection with energy. Also the step peak spectra, though less affected, show an energy shift of the peak maxima in grazing incidence geometry.

Pressure-induced variations of $^{27}$Al NMR spectra of CeAl$_3$ indicate significant changes in the ground-state characteristics of this prototypical heavy-electron compound. Previously reported magnetic and electronic inhomogeneities at ambient pressure and very low temperatures are removed with external pressures exceeding 1.2 kbar. We report the direct observation of slow fluctuations of helical antiferromagnetic domains in an ultra-thin holmium film using coherent resonant magnetic x-ray scattering. We observe a gradual increase of the fluctuations in the speckle pattern with increasing temperature, while at the same time a static contribution to the speckle pattern remains. This finding indicates that domain-wall fluctuations occur over a large range of time scales. We ascribe this non-ergodic behavior to the strong dependence of the fluctuation rate on the local thickness of the film., Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett
