In addition to long-lived radioactive nuclei like U and Th isotopes, which have been used to measure the age of the Galaxy, also radioactive nuclei with half-lives between 0.1 and 100 million years (short-lived radionuclides, SLRs) were present in the early Solar System (ESS), as indicated by high-precision meteoritic analysis. We review the most recent meteoritic data and describe the nuclear reaction processes responsible for the creation of SLRs in different types of stars and supernovae. We show how the evolution of radionuclide abundances in the Milky Way Galaxy can be calculated based on their stellar production. By comparing predictions for the evolution of galactic abundances to the meteoritic data we can build up a time line for the nucleosynthetic events that predated the birth of the Sun, and investigate the lifetime of the stellar nursery where the Sun was born. We then review the scenarios for the circumstances and the environment of the birth of the Sun within such a stellar nursery that have been invoked to explain the abundances in the ESS of the SLRs with the shortest lives - of the order of million years or less. Finally, we describe how the heat generated by radioactive decay and in particular by the abundant 26Al in the ESS had important consequences for the thermo-mechanical and chemical evolution of planetesimals, and discuss possible implications on the habitability of terrestrial-like planets. We conclude with a set of open questions and future directions related to our understanding of the nucleosynthetic processes responsible for the production of SLRs in stars, their evolution in the Galaxy, the birth of the Sun, and the connection with the habitability of extra-solar planets., Comment: Review published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics. Still today, the nucleosynthesis origin of Xe-H in presolar nanodiamonds is far from understood. Historically, possible explanations were proposed by a secondary "neutron-burst" process occurring in the He- or C/O-shells of a type-II supernova (SN-II), which are, however, not fully convincing in terms of modern nucleosynthesis conditions. Therefore, we have investigated Xe isotopic abundance features that may be diagnostic for different versions of a classical, primary r-process in high-entropy-wind (HEW) ejecta of core-collapse SN-II. We report here on parameter tests for non-standard r-process variants, by varying electron abundances (Y$_e$), ranges of entropies (S) and expansion velocities (V$_{exp}$) with their correlated neutron-freezeout times ($\tau$(freeze)) and temperatures (T$_9$(freeze)). Knowledge about the age of presolar grains provides important insights into Galactic chemical evolution and the dynamics of grain formation and destruction processes in the Galaxy. Determination from the abundance of cosmic ray interaction products is straightforward, but in the past has suffered from uncertainties in correcting for recoil losses of spallation products. The problem is less serious in a class of large (tens of micrometer) grains. We describe the correction procedure and summarise results for He and Ne ages of presolar SiC "Jumbo" grains that range from close to zero to ~850 Myr, with the majority being less than 200 Myr. The J=2-1 and 3-2 rotational lines of the rare isotopomer C36S and the J=5-4 and 6-5 transitions of Si36S were detected in the carbon star IRC+10216 (CW Leo). These are the first detections of 36S bearing molecules in a star and the first spectroscopic detection of Si36S. From a comparison of 34S and 36S bearing isotopomers, th 34S/36S isotopic ratio is 107(+-15). This value is comparable to values in the interstellar medium of the inner Galactic disk (115) but is smaller than the solar value of 288 (Ding et al. 2001). The increase of the 36S abundance relative to 34S only qualitatively follows model predictions of a low mass AGB star. Quantitative agreement of the observed 34S/36S ratio with the stellar models can be reached if the age of IRC+10216 and Galactic chemical evolution are taken into account. Other less likely possibilities are the presence of considerable inhomogeneities in the interstellar medium and either IRC+10216 or the Sun started with a peculiar 36S abundance. Other production mechanisms potentially capable of enhancing the Galactic interstellar medium are discussed. From the observed line density toward IRC+10216 and toward Galactic star forming regions, we estimate the confusion limit toward those sources.

We present here the first infrared spectra of meteoritic SiC grains. The mid-infrared transmission spectra of meteoritic SiC grains isolated from the Murchison meteorite were measured in the wavelength range 2.5--16.5 micron, in order to make available the optical properties of presolar SiC grains. These grains are most likely stellar condensates with an origin predominately in carbon stars. Measurements were performed on two different extractions of presolar SiC from the Murchison meteorite. The two samples show very different spectral appearance due to different grain size distributions. The spectral feature of the smaller meteoritic SiC grains is a relatively broad absorption band found between the longitudinal and transverse lattice vibration modes around 11.3 micron, supporting the current interpretation about the presence of SiC grains in carbon stars. In contrast to this, the spectral feature of the large (> 5 micron) grains has an extinction minimum around 10 micron. The obtained spectra are compared with commercially available SiC grains and the differences are discussed. This comparison shows that the crystal structure (e.g., beta-SiC versus alpha-SiC) of SiC grains plays a minor role on the optical signature of SiC grains compared to e.g. grain size., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. A variety of processes have been considered possibly contributing the volatiles including noble gases to the atmospheres of the terrestrial planets (e.g., [1-3]). Special consideration has been given to the concept of accretion of volatile-rich materials by the forming planets. This might include infalling planetesimals and dust, and could include material from the outer asteroid belt, as well as cometary material from the outer solar system. Currently, the dominant source of extraterrestrial material accreted by the Earth is represented by micrometeorites (MMs) with sizes mostly in the 100-300 micron range [3, 4]). Their role has been assessed by [3], who conclude that accretion of early micrometeorites played a major role in the formation of the terrestrial atmosphere and oceans. We have therefore set out to investigate in more detail the inventory of noble gases in MMs. Here we summarize some of our results obtained on MMs collected in micrometeorite traps of the Transantarctic Mountains [5].

The HED (Howardite, Eucrite and Diogenite) meteorite clan likely originate from the asteroid 4-Vesta [1]. Howardites (polymict breccias of eucritic and diogenitic material) are believed to originate from the vestan surface, and many contain regolith-like features (impact and/or melt clasts, fragmental breccia clasts, carbonaceous chondrite fragments), which may relate to regolith-formation processes. Noble gas analysis can help determine true regolithic nature, as Solar Wind (SW) is im-planted into grains at the upper-surfaces of solar system bodies lacking an atmosphere or magnetic field. Howardites from Ves-ta s true regolith would thus show evidence for SW components. Thus far, we have identified 5 regolithic howardites: LEW 85313; MET 00423; PRA 04401; SCO 06040 and EET 87513; based on our noble gas analyses, with the latter 3 showing some evidence for a planetary(+SW) component, likely related to CM-like material present in the assemblage [2-5]. However, we did not find a good correlation between SW content and other petro-logic regolithic features. Nor did we find an obvious correlation between SW and high siderophile element contents (Ni greater than 300 micrograms/gram), or an Al2O3 range of 8-9 wt% and eucrite/diogenite (E/D) ratio of 2:1 as suggested by [6] to be further regolith indicators. Here, we report our latest noble gas data for two howardites GRO 95535, GRO 95602 and a polymict eucrite EET 87518 in continuing research aimed at better understanding the vestan regolith. Results: Noble gas analysis was performed on an MAP 215-50 noble gas mass spectrometer using furnace step-heating. Our results, shown in Table 1, are compared with SW- (LEW 85313) and planetary-dominated (PRA 04401 ~60% CM) howardites [2]. EET 87518 is dominated by cosmogenic components. By comparison, both howardites show strong evidence for SW, with total Ne-20/Ne-22 ~8.7-8.8 (SW: Ne-20/Ne-22 13.78 [7]), and identical release patterns to our other CM-poor SW-rich samples. This suggests that these samples are from the vestan regolith. As they have lower Ni contents than suggested by [6], this further illustrates that these parameters may show some bias [2].

The howardite, eucrite and diogenite (HED) meteorites likely originate from asteroid 4-Vesta, the first of two asteroids targeted by NASA's Dawn mission]. Howardites are polymict breccias dominantly composed of basaltic (eucrite) and orthopyroxenitic (diogenite) material. They are believed to originate from the surface of Vesta, and may represent the regolithic surface layer. Many howardites contain "regolith"-like features including fragmental breccias clasts, carbonaceous chondrite fragments and melt clasts (impact and volcanic). Though such features may relate to asteroid regolith formation processes, the exact regolithic nature of the howardite suite is not well defined.
