IntroductionThere is a critical need to foster inclusive educational spaces for Queer identifying students and to resist oppressive structures that seek to marginalize and inflict trauma on students because of their gender or sexual identity.MethodsDrawing on thematic analysis and Queer theory, we interviewed 11 Queer identifying STEM students to understand the navigational strategies they leveraged within higher education environments related to their Queer identity.ResultsWe developed a cyclical model of navigational strategies employed by Queer STEM students that involved evaluating the environments, performing psychological identity calculations, and engaging in behavioral actions. Students evaluated the environment by attending to the diversity of gender representation, presence of other Queer individuals, and contextual factors conveyed based on disciplinary expectations. Students engaged in psychological identity calculations whereby they assessed beliefs about the relevance, importance, and fears related to their Queer identity, with few perceiving any benefits. Behavioral actions resulted in students building a chosen community, disclosing or shelving their queer identity, and advocating for representation.DiscussionIn order to support Queer students to thrive in educational contexts, researchers and practitioners should examine ways to increase representation, use inclusive pedagogical strategies, and understand the relevance of Queerness within disciplinary fields. Questioning the relevance or presence of Queerness in higher education environments only further serves to oppress, inflict trauma, and marginalize Queer students.

Inouye [sup.1] , Kosei Eguchi [sup.1] , Alexandra [...], The liberation of energy stores from adipocytes is critical to support survival in times of energy deficit; however, uncontrolled or chronic lipolysis associated with insulin resistance and/or insulin insufficiency disrupts metabolic homeostasis.sup.1,2. Coupled to lipolysis is the release of a recently identified hormone, fatty-acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4).sup.3. Although circulating FABP4 levels have been strongly associated with cardiometabolic diseases in both preclinical models and humans.sup.4-7, no mechanism of action has yet been described.sup.8-10. Here we show that hormonal FABP4 forms a functional hormone complex with adenosine kinase (ADK) and nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK) to regulate extracellular ATP and ADP levels. We identify a substantial effect of this hormone on beta cells and given the central role of beta-cell function in both the control of lipolysis and development of diabetes, postulate that hormonal FABP4 is a key regulator of an adipose-beta-cell endocrine axis. Antibody-mediated targeting of this hormone complex improves metabolic outcomes, enhances beta-cell function and preserves beta-cell integrity to prevent both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Thus, the FABP4-ADK-NDPK complex, Fabkin, represents a previously unknown hormone and mechanism of action that integrates energy status with the function of metabolic organs, and represents a promising target against metabolic disease. Hormonal FABP4 is discovered to be a pivotal regulator of an adipose-beta-cell endocrine axis that coordinates energy status and metabolic organ function, and targeting this axis improved metabolic outcomes.

Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by P. aeruginosa is a cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. The spread of pathogens with anti-microbial resistance mandates the investigation of novel therapies. Specific polyclonal anti- P. aeruginosa IgY-antibodies ( Pa- IgY) might be effective for VAP caused by P. aeruginosa. The objective of this study was to investigate if intravenous Pa- IgY decreases the lower airway concentration of P. aeruginosa in VAP. We used a double blind randomized placebo controlled porcine model of VAP caused by P. aeruginosa . Eighteen pigs were randomized to either receive intravenous Pa- IgY or placebo. Repeated registration of physiological parameters and sampling was performed for 27 h. Concentration of P. aeruginosa in BAL-cultures was similar in both groups with 10 4.97 ± 10 2.09 CFU/mL in the intervention group vs 10 4.37 ± 10 2.62 CFU/mL in the control group at the end of the experiment. The intervention group had higher heart rate, cardiac index, oxygen delivery and arterial oxygen tension/fraction of inspired oxygen-ratio, but lower plasma lactate and blood hemoglobin levels than the control group. In summary, in an anesthetized and mechanically ventilated porcine model of VAP, Pa- IgY at the dose used did not decrease concentrations of P. aeruginosa in the lower airways.

Partial migrants have populations consisting of both migratory and resident individuals. These migrants and residents experience unequal ecological conditions during winter and the underlying factors driving their decision to stay on their breeding grounds or to migrate remain debated--both from the viewpoint of populations and individuals. Here, we studied partial migration in a small raptor, the Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), from two different but interconnected perspectives: 1) explaining the patterns and variation in the ratio of migrants to residents (migratoriness) at the population level and 2) revealing how age and sex may affect the individual decision to be migratory or resident. We used citizen observation data over four decades to explore the temporal and spatial variation in the age and sex ratio of wintering resident sparrowhawks in Sweden. We found that the migratoriness unexpectedly increased with higher annual temperatures and showed long-term trend across the study period. Also, this migrant-toresident ratio increased with smaller winter prey abundance. The average winter sex ratio was male-biased and became increasingly so over the years. We suggest that residency benefits territory-establishing males as early presence gives a competitive advantage in obtaining high-quality territories. Moreover, the distribution of overwintering individuals (regardless of sex) moved gradually northwards as the winter progressed, suggesting that smaller-scale migration occurs among the resident fraction of the population. Abstract Objective In contrast to research agendas being predominantly set by scientists or funders, a collaborative approach was used to spot future goals for research on obsessive‐compulsive disorder. Methods First, we conducted a meta‐review and then compared the results of two online surveys with OCD professionals and patients on research priorities. The literature search was performed in three comprehensive databases, and ten research goals were extracted. Sixty‐four patients and eight professionals responded to open questions on their five most important goals. Then, they ranked the ten aims extracted from the literature on a 6‐point Likert scale. Results For patients and professionals, research on treatment gains that persist long‐term was most important. Concerning the top five goals listed in an open format, for patients, development and maintenance of the disease was as important as psychotherapy and its efficacy. In contrast, for professionals, the efficacy and the optimization of psychotherapy were the far most important research goals. Conclusions We proposed one possibility to involve patients in OCD research, and the multitude of answers presents a wealth of research ideas. Practice Implications Since consistent research involvement may contribute to its clinical impact, researchers are now invited to translate our findings into empirical studies.

Abstract Background P. aeruginosa is a pathogen frequently resistant to antibiotics and a common cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Non-antibiotic strategies to prevent or treat VAP are therefore of major interest. Specific polyclonal avian IgY antibodies have previously been shown to be effective against pneumonia caused by P. aeruginosa in rodents and against P. aeruginosa airway colonization in patients. Objectives To study the effect of specific polyclonal anti-P. aeruginosa IgY antibodies (Pa-IgY) on colonization of the airways in a porcine model. Method The pigs were anesthetized, mechanically ventilated, and subject to invasive hemodynamic monitoring and allocated to either receive 109 CFU nebulized P. aeruginosa (control, n = 6) or 109 CFU nebulized P. aeruginosa + 200 mg Pa-IgY antibodies (intervention, n = 6). Physiological measurement, blood samples, and tracheal cultures were then secured regularly for 27 h, after which the pigs were sacrificed and lung biopsies were cultured. Results After nebulization, tracheal growth of P. aeruginosa increased in both groups during the experiment, but with lower growth in the Pa-IgY-treated group during the experiment (p = 0.02). Tracheal growth was 4.6 × 103 (9.1 × 102–3.1 × 104) vs. 4.8 × 104 (7.5 × 103–1.4 × 105) CFU/mL in the intervention group vs. the control group at 1 h and 5.0 × 100 (0.0 × 100–3.8 × 102) vs. 3.3 × 104 (8.0 × 103–1.4 × 105) CFU/mL at 12 h in the same groups. During this time, growth in the intervention vs. control group was one to two orders of ten lower. After 12 h, the treatment effect disappeared and bacterial growth increased in both groups. The intervention group had lower body temperature and cardiac index and higher static compliance compared to the control group. Conclusion In this porcine model, Pa-IgY antibodies lessen bacterial colonization of the airways.

Hypercalcemia is frequently encountered in both hospital wards and the primary care setting; 90% of cases can be attributed to primary hyperparathyroidism and malignancy. However, a minority are caused by medications, of which calcium supplements have been an increasingly common etiology. We are presenting a case of hypercalcemia resulted after acute oral intake of a moderate amount of antacids (calcium tablets) and normalized after supplement withdrawal.
