A previous study has reported the interesting relaxant effect of the hydroalcoholic extract from Waltheria indica L. (Malvaceae) leafy stems, a plant with several therapeutic uses. The present study aimed to investigate the preventive effect of this plant using an ex vivo model of the rat trachea. Two agonists, acetylcholine (10-6 - 1.5×10-5 M) and barium chloride (10-5- 10-1 M) were used to induce contractions. The preventive effect was assessed on rat tracheal rings pretreated with hydroalcoholic extract (1.92 mg/mL), glibenclamide, atropine, and papaverine, all at 10 µM. Acetylcholine and barium chloride provoke contractions in a concentration-dependent manner, with a maximum contractile response of 3.953 ± 0.692 g and 2.999 ± 0.326 g, respectively. The EC50 values were 3.711 ± 0.823 µM and 9.502 ± 12.354 mM, respectively, for acetylcholine- and barium chloride-induced contraction. Glibenclamide caused a rightward shift of the acetylcholine-response curve, followed by a reduction of the maximum contraction (from 3.953 ± 0.692 g to 3. 116 ± 0.244 g). The hydroalcoholic extract, atropine, papaverine, and their combinations induced a complete suppression of the contractile response to acetylcholine (p < 0.0001) and barium chloride (p < 0.0001). The hydroalcoholic extract exhibited a potent relaxant effect comparable to that of atropine and papaverine. It can be concluded that the hydroalcoholic extract of W. indica can potently prevent acetylcholine-and barium chloride-induced contractions. The possible mechanisms by which the extract exerts its relaxant effect may involve the blockade of muscarinic receptors, the inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity, and/or the calcium channel.

Background: Genetic and environment play a significant role in the etiology of essential hypertension (EH). Recently STK39 rs3754777, ATP2B1 rs2681472 and rs17249754 have been associated with BP variation and hypertension. In this study we aimed to determine firstly whether index variants were associated with the risk of developing EH in Burkina Faso and secondly to characterize cardiovascular risk markers., Methods: We conducted a case-control study with 380 participants including 180 case subjects with EH and 200 control subjects with normal BP. We used TaqMan genotyping assays with probes from Applied Biosystems to genotype polymorphisms using the 7500 Real-Time PCR System. Biochemical parameters were measured using chemistry analyzer COBAS C311., Results: T-test showed that cardiovascular risk markers such as body mass index, waist circumference, blood sugar, total cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly higher in hypertensive compared to normotensive (all p <  0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed in decreasing order that overweight, family history of hypertension, central obesity and alcohol intake increased the risk of developing EH (all OR > 3.8; all p <  0.001). In genetic level we observed that individuals carrying the AA+AG genotype of ATP2B1 rs17249754 had a low risk of developing EH than those carrying the GG genotype (OR = 0.48 [95% CI: 0.31-0.75] p = 0.001) and the A allele frequency in the cases was significantly lower than that of the controls (OR = 0.56 [95% CI: 0.38-0.82] p = 0.003). We also observed that ATP2B1 rs17249754 was significantly associated with higher SBP and DPB in case and control groups (GG versus AG + AA; p <  0.05), ATP2B1 rs2681472 was significantly associated with higher SBP only in case and control group (AA versus AG + GG; p <  0.05), STK39 rs3754777 was not significantly associated with any of the BP traits (CC versus CT + TT; p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Our results confirmed the significant association of ATP2B1 rs17249754 with the risk of developing EH in Burkinabe and showed an increase of cardiovascular risk markers levels in subjects with EH.

Background: Young street hawkers in Burkina Faso are increasingly exposed to workplace hazards such as physical and sexual abuse, and also unsafe sexual practices. The objectives of this study were to identify the socio-demographic status and work characteristics of young female hawkers, describe their sexual behavior and their experience with regards to sex-related violence at the workplace., Methods: The study used a mixed design combining qualitative and quantitative methods. It was carried out in two traffic stations in Burkina Faso namely Bittou customs station and Boromo bus station. Female hawkers aged 13 - 24 years were invited to participate in a questionnaire survey and local key informants were recruited to partake in an in-depth interview. The recruitment was based on their duties related to the hawkers., Results: The study included 264 participants in the survey and 16 interviewees. The survey showed that three quarter of participants had primary education or lower. About half of them had been sexually harassed, with clients, public members and co-hawkers as the most common source of assault. Most (68.6%) hawkers were sexually active; among them 43.7% had received money or gifts for sex. Positive factors associated with commercial sex include working in Boromo and age above 17, while negative factors include being Muslim and having female genital mutilation. The interviews confirmed the relationship between hawking and the socio-economic situation of participant's family, and pointed out societal factors that expose hawkers to risky sexual behaviors., Conclusion: This study provides a better understanding of young female hawking activity in Boromo and Bittou. Implementing an empowerment program for female street vendors and their families, and an efficient surveillance system might help reduce these hazards.
