This paper aims to analyze the influence of public teachers' wages on student test scores in mathematics and reading. A linear model was estimated using endogenous variables on data from the 2014 Programme for the Analysis of Educational Systems survey in Burkina Faso. Teachers' wages have differentiated, mixed, and heterogeneous influences on student performance in urban areas and negative influences in rural. Good academic performance requires accounting for geographical aspects when setting teachers' wages. Background: One of the main barriers of the management of household tuberculosis child contacts is the necessity for parents to bring healthy children to the facility. We assessed the feasibility of a community intervention for tuberculosis (TB) household child contact management and the conditions for its evaluation in a cluster randomized controlled trial in Cameroon and Uganda. Methods: We assessed three dimensions of feasibility using a mixed method approach: (1) recruitment capability using retrospective aggregated data from facility registers; (2) acceptability of the intervention using focus group discussions with TB patients and in-depth interviews with healthcare providers and community leaders; and (3) adaptation, integration, and resources of the intervention in existing TB services using a survey and discussions with stakeholders. Results: Reaching the sample size is feasible in all clusters in 15 months with the condition of regrouping 2 facilities in the same cluster in Uganda due to decentralization of TB services. Community health worker (CHW) selection and training and simplified tools for contact screening, tolerability, and adherence of preventive therapy were key elements for the implementation of the community intervention. Healthcare providers and patients found the intervention of child contact investigations and TB preventive treatment management in the household acceptable in both countries due to its benefits (competing priorities, transport cost) as compared to facility-based management. TB stigma was present, but not a barrier for the community intervention. Visit schedule and team conduct were identified as key facilitators for the intervention. Conclusions: This study shows that evaluating a community intervention for TB child contact management in a cluster randomized trial is feasible in Cameroon and Uganda. Background: Access to tailored HIV prevention services remains limited for West African MSM. We assessed adherence to quarterly HIV prevention services and its impact on HIV incidence in MSM followed up in four cities in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Togo.Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study between 2015 and 2018. HIV-negative MSM aged over 18 benefited from quarterly medical visits which included a clinical examination, HIV testing, screening and treatment for other sexually transmitted infections, peer-led counselling and support, and the provision of condoms and lubricants. Determinants of adherence to quarterly follow-up visits and incident HIV infections were identified using generalized estimating equation models and Cox proportional hazard models, respectively.Results: 618 MSM were followed up for a median time of 20.0 months (interquartile range 15.2-26.3). Overall adherence to quarterly follow-up visits was 76.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 75.1-77.8), ranging from 66.8% in Abidjan to 87.3% in Lomé (p < 0.001). 78 incident HIV infections occurred during a total follow-up time of 780.8 person-years, giving an overall incidence of 10.0 per 100 person-years (95% CI 8.0-12.5). Adherence to quarterly follow-up visits was not associated with the risk of incident HIV infection (adjusted hazard ratio 0.80, 95% CI 0.44-1.44, p = 0.545).Conclusions: Strengthening HIV prevention services among MSM in West Africa, including the use of PrEP, will be critical for controlling the epidemic, not only in this key population but also in the general population. RTS,S/AS01 E malaria vaccine contains the hepatitis B virus surface antigen and may thus serve as a potential hepatitis B vaccine. To evaluate the impact of RTS,S/AS01 E when implemented in the Expanded Program of Immunization, infants 8-12 weeks old were randomized to receive either RTS,S/AS01 E or a licensed hepatitis B control vaccine (HepB), both co-administered with various combinations of the following childhood vaccines: diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis- Haemophilus influenzae type b, trivalent oral poliovirus, pneumococcal non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate and human rotavirus vaccine. Long-term persistence of antibodies against the circumsporozoite (CS) protein and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were assessed, together with the immune memory response to the HB antigen following a booster dose of HepB vaccine. Subgroups receiving RTS,S or the HepB control vaccine were pooled into RTS,S groups and HepB groups, respectively. One month post-HepB booster vaccination, 100% of participants in the RTS,S groups and 98.3% in the control groups had anti-HBs antibody concentrations ≥10 mIU/mL with the geometric mean concentrations (GMCs) at 46634.7 mIU/mL (95% CI: 40561.3; 53617.6) and 9258.2 mIU/mL (95% CI: 6925.3; 12377.0), respectively. Forty-eight months post-primary vaccination anti-CS antibody GMCs ranged from 2.3 EU/mL to 2.7 EU/mL in the RTS,S groups compared to 1.1 EU/mL in the control groups. Hepatitis B priming with the RTS,S/AS01 E vaccine was effective and resulted in a memory response to HBsAg as shown by the robust booster response following an additional dose of HepB vaccine. RTS,S/AS01E when co-administered with PHiD-CV, HRV and other childhood vaccines, had an acceptable safety profile.
