The application of machine learning techniques for monitoring and diagnosing faults in photovoltaic (PV) systems has been shown to enhance the reliability of PV power generation. This research introduced a novel machine learning classifier for fault diagnosis in PV systems, utilizing an ensemble algorithm known as extra trees (ETC). The study initially proposed a system with two PV modules and developed a low-cost Arduino-based data logger to gather data from the PV system in free-fault and faulty conditions. Subsequently, the study evaluated six other advanced classifiers for fault diagnosis in PV systems, namely logistic regression (LR), k-nearest neighbor (kNN), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), AdaBoost, and random forest (RF) models using the collected data from the proposed PV system. The assessment of the various models' performance indicated that the extra trees model exhibits superior classification capabilities for partial shading (PS), open circuit (OCF), partial shading with bypass diode disconnected (PSBD), and combined partial shading with bypass diode disconnected plus open circuit (PSBDOC) faults. The results demonstrated that the new ETC classifier achieves an accuracy of 92%, surpassing the 91%, 87%, 7%, and 59% accuracy of the RF, DT, kNN, and LR classifiers, respectively. This highlights the effectiveness of the extra trees model in enhancing fault detection and classification by distinguishing between open circuits and twin faults. Consequently, these results can be utilized to develop advanced diagnostic tools for photovoltaic systems, thereby improving the reliability of solar technology and accelerating the rate of installation.

Objective: To determine maternal and neonatal complications occurring at childbirth among adolescents. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive study conducted from 1st July to 31st December 2019 at the maternity ward of the Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital Centre (CHU- SO), Lomé, Togo. The socio- demographic parameters of the mothers, details of prenatal and perinatal events and the clinical profile of the newborns at birth were studied. Results: The records of 332 adolescent mothers were studied. The average age of the mothers was 17.4 ± 1.5 years, with a range of 13-19 years. The pregnancies in two-thirds (66.3%) were supervised in centres without surgical facilities and by midwives in 83.1% of cases. A little over half of the mothers (53.3%) attended at least four antenatal clinic sessions, while 3.6% attended none. The modes of delivery were spontaneous vaginal (62.3%) and Caesarean section (35.2%). Complications of pregnancy were recorded in 12.9% of the mothers. There were statistically significant associations between the referred status of the mothers and haemorrhages, retained placenta and sepsis (p = 0.001, 0.038 and 0.011, respectively). There were no maternal deaths. The newborn babies required resuscitation in 6.3% of cases, while 7.0% were stillborn. There was a statistically significant relationship between the referred status of mothers and the occurrence of perinatal deaths (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: Adolescent mothers are at risk of complications during childbirth, and these risks are increased by poor antenatal care and attempted deliveries in centres without surgical facilities.

We present in this article the complete setup to build a triggered controller with a mechanical optical shutter. The system is a low cost, Do-It-Yourself, and easy to implement setup with three functionalities: Manual mode, direct mode with TTL signal command and Triggered mode with a TTL signal command. Our setup is primarily intended to be integrated in optical setup where one needs to control the opening time of a light path, but can be used also for any other setup where one wants to send a TTL signal to command another subsystem (in our case the shutter is that subsystem). The shutter used here is hard disk drive voice-coil actuator, which was already demonstrated to have interesting potentialities to be a mechanical shutter.In the Manual mode, this setup achieves an opening and closing time of 3 ms. In Direct mode with TTL signal command, the setup has a delay response time of 19 ms and a minimum open pulse time of 23 ms. This low cost device which can be made with less than 50€, have similar characteristics with commercial ones which can be twenty times more expensive.

Abstract This article delves into the intriguing realm of food waste valorization conducted by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in two distinct locales—Brasilia, Brazil, and Lomé, Togo. The primary focus of this exploration is the lens of the Circular Economy (CE), a concept that emphasizes the sustainable utilization of resources within closed loops. The discourse is further enriched by introducing the notion of upcycling, a complementary force to the Circular Economy, particularly within the intricate web of food supply chains. The ReSOLVE framework, a strategic approach for managing food waste, is a guiding light in this research. Upon dissecting the outcomes, noteworthy limitations come to the forefront, shedding light on the challenges of aligning NGOs from both countries with the principles of the Circular Economy in their food waste management endeavors. These challenges assume heightened significance against the backdrop of the intricate global food security landscape, effectively underlining the intricacies of harmonizing the Circular Economy's ambitions with the pragmatic goal of diminishing food waste. The overarching objective of this study is to galvanize circular-oriented initiatives that can effectively curtail and prevent food wastage on a global scale, with a particular emphasis on developing nations. This pursuit is underscored by the triad of benefits such initiatives confer: economic advancement, social amelioration, and a positive ecological footprint. In an era where sustainability stands as a paramount concern, this research advocates for concerted efforts to harmonize the noble ideals of the Circular Economy with the pressing need for food waste reduction, especially within regions striving for holistic growth and development.

BackgroundThere is a growing body of evidence that asserts community engagement approaches can improve the quality of reproductive health services. Family planning (FP) programs in Togo are implementing such approaches, which aim to mobilize both health workers and communities to improve FP service quality and FP uptake. However, there is not enough known about the enabling factors and challenges associated with implementation, or the extent to which the programs improve outcomes leading to contraceptive uptake.MethodsWe qualitatively explored how a community engagement approach influenced health worker and community perceptions related to FP service delivery in and around the city of Lomé, Togo, within the context of the broader integration of social and behavior change and service delivery. We conducted 18 in-depth interviews with health workers and 9 focus group discussions with community members.ResultsWe found the approach, which included community dialogues, site walkthrough visits and the development of community action plans, worked synergistically together to support collaborative action between communities and health workers to increase mutual understanding of their collective needs related to FP services. Community members cited improved reception at the health facilities by health workers and indicated that the site walkthrough visits created a greater sense of empathy towards the providers and the challenges faced in their work environment. Health workers acknowledged a greater understanding of barriers at the community level following community dialogues, particularly among community members that are not routinely encountered at the health facility for reproductive health services such as men and youth. We found limited implementation of health facility improvements included in community action plans because they were dependent on commitment from community leadership and the need to mobilize additional support or financial resources.ConclusionCommunity engagement approaches are a promising mechanism to support collaboration and enhance mutual understanding between health workers and communities to achieve improved FP service quality. Future programs should consider incorporating additional mechanisms to monitor community action plans and provide support to address structural challenges at the facility level particularly those that require financial resources.

Background: Cerebral small vessel disease is the most common cause of lacunar strokes (LS). Understanding LS pathogenesis is vital for predicting disease severity, prognosis, and developing therapies. Objectives: To research molecular profiles that differentiate LS in deep brain structures from those in subcortical white matter. Design: Prospective case–control study involving 120 patients with imaging-confirmed LS and a 120 control group. Methods: We examined the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers [amyloid beta (Aβ 1–40 , Aβ 1–42 )], serum inflammatory marker (interleukin-6, IL-6), and endothelial dysfunction markers [soluble tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis, and pentraxin-3 (sTWEAK, PTX3)] with respect to LS occurring in deep brain structures and subcortical white matter. In addition, we investigated links between LS, leukoaraiosis presence (white matter hyperintensities, WMHs), and functional outcomes at 3 months. Poor outcome was defined as a modified Rankin scale >2 at 3 months. During routine virus screening, grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV; genus Grablovirus, family Geminiviridae) was detected in several samples of a recently released interspecific hybrid wine grapevine cultivar, Blanc du Soleil (BdS, US PP 34,483 P2, 2022). Molecular characterization of the BdS GRBV isolates revealed the presence of distinct complete genomes in nine isolates, with atypical lengths of 3,181 to 3,183 nucleotides (nt) relative to the expected 3,205 to 3,208 nt reported for GRBV isolates characterized to date globally. The difference in length was mainly due to deletions in the long intergenic region of the BdS GRBV isolates. In a phylogenetic reconstruction, the BdS GRBV isolates formed a monophyletic subclade basal to the clade II isolates to which they were more phylogenetically related than the clade I isolates. On average, complete genomes of these new isolates are 98.75% identical to each other, 96.66% identical to clade II isolates, and 92.02% identical to clade I isolates. Biochemistry, hematology and serology laboratories produce very heterogeneous discharges capable of polluting water, soil and the environment. The aim of this study is to evaluate the physico-chemical quality of the ashes, effluents and the range of equipment that produce the much effluent and pollutions.This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study of 82 laboratories followed by the sampling of effluents from automatons. The physico-chemical parameters and trace elements are determined according to French Standardization Association (AFNOR) standards and used atomic absorption spectrometers and molecular absorption spectrometers. The Mindray hematology automaton is used for 64.7% and 81.5% of the cans are used to collect waste. Semehow 77.8% of discharges are released into sinks without adequate treatment in 42.6% of cases. Chemical analyses show that trace elements (TE) levels in effluents range from 5.89 ± 0.21 to 105.80 ± 0.96 μg/L for Arsenic; from 5.62 ± 0.34 to 6.53 ± 0.49 μg/L for Cadmium; 0.70 ± 0.01 to 10.63 ± 1.17 μg/L for Mercure and 35.72 ± 1.88 to 61.98 ± 5.15 μg/L for Plomb. pH ranges from 7.17 ± 0.65 to 8.3 ± 1.35 with total dissolved salts (TDS) range from 3260.20 ± 401.68 to 17117.41 ± 265.37 mg/L. All averages of contamination indices (CI) and polymetallic contamination indices (PCI) for post-incineration ashes are greater than 1.5 with the exception of Hg (0.22). For effluents, in addition to polymetallic contamination indices (PCI), CI in hematology effluents (1.09), all CI are less than 1. Hematology effluents have a lower pH and are much more mineralized and concentrated in trace elements while those from biochemistry and serology appear to be similar. However, the effluents of Biochemistry and Serology are more basic and concentrated in Suspended Solids with higher values obtained in Biochemistry. Although the physico-chemical parameters comply with WHO standards, discharges from automatons deserve appropriate treatment before their disposal.

Background: Monogenic Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has severe health and socioeconomic repercussions. Its rarest cause is presenilin 2 (PSEN2) gene mutations. We present two new cases with presumed PSEN2-AD with unusual clinical and neuroimaging findings in order to provide more information on the pathophysiology and semiology of these patients. Methods: Women aged 69 and 62 years at clinical onset, marked by prominent behavioral and language dysfunction, progressing to severe dementia within three years were included. The complete study is depicted. In addition, a systematic review of the PSEN2-AD was performed. Results: Neuroimaging revealed pronounced frontal white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and frontotemporal atrophy/hypometabolism. The genetic study unveiled PSEN2 variants: c.772G>A (p.Ala258Thr) and c.1073-2_1073-1del. Both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and experimental blood biomarkers shouldered AD etiology. Conclusions: Prominent behavioral and language dysfunction suggesting frontotemporal dementia (FTD) may be underestimated in the literature as a clinical picture in PSEN2 mutations. Thus, it may be reasonable to include PSEN2 in genetic panels when suspecting FTDL. PSEN2 mutations may cause striking WMH, arguably related to myelin disruption induced by amyloid accumulation.

Glutamate grabbers, such as glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), have been proposed to prevent excitotoxicity secondary to high glutamate levels in stroke patients. However, the efficacy of blood glutamate grabbing by GOT could be dependent on the extent and severity of the disruption of the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Our purpose was to analyze the relationship between GOT and glutamate concentration with the patient’s functional status differentially according to BBB serum markers (soluble tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) and leukoaraiosis based on neuroimaging). This retrospective observational study includes 906 ischemic stroke patients. We studied the presence of leukoaraiosis and the serum levels of glutamate, GOT, and sTWEAK in blood samples. Functional outcome was assessed using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 3 months. A significant negative correlation between GOT and glutamate levels at admission was shown in those patients with sTWEAK levels > 2900 pg/mL (Pearson’s correlation coefficient: −0.249; p < 0.0001). This correlation was also observed in patients with and without leukoaraiosis (Pearson’s correlation coefficients: −0.299; p < 0.001 vs. −0.116; p = 0.024). The logistic regression model confirmed the association of higher levels of GOT with lower odds of poor outcome at 3 months when sTWEAK levels were >2900 pg/mL (OR: 0.41; CI 95%: 0.28–0.68; p < 0.0001) or with leukoaraiosis (OR: 0.75; CI 95%: 0.69–0.82; p < 0.0001). GOT levels are associated with glutamate levels and functional outcomes at 3 months, but only in those patients with leukoaraiosis and elevated sTWEAK levels. Consequently, therapies targeting glutamate grabbing might be more effective in patients with BBB dysfunction.

Hydropower is a traditional and widespread form of renewable energy and vertical axis turbines are an emerging technology suitable for low to medium velocity water bodies such as rivers. Such devices can provide renewable power to remote communities but may also contribute to fragmenting already poorly connected riverine habitats and the impact could be particularly pronounced for migratory diadromous aquatic species such as salmonids by limiting their ability to pass the turbines. Optimising the design of such turbines is therefore essential to mitigate their impact on aquatic fauna. One easily altered property that does not impact turbine performance is blade colour. Here, juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) free swimming within a flume were monitored in the presence of a vertical axis turbine that was either stationary or rotating, and coloured white or orange. The orange colour of the turbine affected behaviour by increasing turbine avoidance and decreasing the number of potentially harmful interactions with the turbine when it was rotating, whilst not affecting passage or mobility of the trout compared to the white turbine. Visibility is therefore a potentially useful tool in mitigating the environmental impact of hydrokinetic turbines.

Abstract Sphingolipids are essential components of cell membranes, and many of them regulate vital cell functions. In particular, ceramide plays crucial roles in cell signaling processes. Two major actions of ceramides are the promotion of cell cycle arrest and the induction of apoptosis. Phosphorylation of ceramide produces ceramide 1-phosphate (C1P), which has opposite effects to ceramide. C1P is mitogenic and has prosurvival properties. In addition, C1P is an important mediator of inflammatory responses, an action that takes place through stimulation of cytosolic phospholipase A2, and the subsequent release of arachidonic acid and prostaglandin formation. All of the former actions are thought to be mediated by intracellularly generated C1P. However, the recent observation that C1P stimulates macrophage chemotaxis implicates specific plasma membrane receptors that are coupled to Gi proteins. Hence, it can be concluded that C1P has dual actions in cells, as it can act as an intracellular second messenger to promote cell survival, or as an extracellular receptor agonist to stimulate cell migration.

Abstract Hydrokinetic turbines such as vertical axis turbines (VATs) may provide decentralised, clean, sustainable energy for remote communities that lack access to the main energy grid or renewable resources. As traditional hydropower adversely alters aquatic ecosystems, it is essential to evaluate the environmental consequences of deploying VATs in riverine ecosystems to meet current and future energy needs. This study explores the implications of VATs on fish movement by observing fish swimming behaviour under two discharges, turbine operation states, and cross-sections confinements using scaled laboratory experiments. Our findings reveal that for cross-sectional confined conditions neither discharge, turbine presence, nor device operation, prevented fish from passing around and through the turbine both in the up- and downstream directions. However, fish spent the least time near the turbine vicinity and within the turbine’s turbulent, low-velocity wake, indicating avoidance behaviour. Swimming in a less confined test section further reduced the time spent within the turbine’s vicinity and wake, increasing the distance fish kept away from the device. Our results contribute to an understanding of VATs as low-risk hazards for fish swimming behaviour, advancing the potential of deploying VATs in rivers, estuaries or sea as a renewable energy solution for remote communities.
