Statement of the general problem. The article provides an analysis of the geological and tectonic factors that influenced the formation of deposits of the Krosnenskaya zone of the Outer Carpathians. The authors considered several questions related to the stratigraphy and tectonics of this zone. In the geological structure of the Krosnenskaya cover, we distinguish two separate cover units - the Turkivskaya and Bitlyanskaya subcovers, based on their lithologic and facies characteristics. The problems of finding hydrocarbon deposits in this region are associated with an insufficient understanding of their structure. This problem was solved with the emergence of the concept of scaly-thrust structure of the Krosnenskaya zone. Productive horizons with unstable tides are revealed in the Oligocene sediments of Golovetsk. These horizons are not currently developed. We believe that it is possible to obtain stable industrial gas flows from such collectors. Research materials and methods. The history of the study of the geological structure of 7 deposits located on the territory of Poland and Ukraine within the considered and adjacent regions is presented: Borynskyi (well 1, 2), Hryniavskyi, Khaschiv-Lopushanskyi, Pobuk, Sanok, Strahotsina and Grabovnica. In total, 13 measurements of the composition of gas mixtures were included in the calculation. The depth range for the considered samples is within 875-5077 m, which allowed us to draw conclusions about changes in geochemical coefficients with depth. Presentation of the main research material. The analysis of the history of the evolution of organic matter was carried out using the method of geochemical coefficients and thermodynamic modeling using the methods of independent chemical reaction constants and entropy maximization. According to the results of the analysis, it was established that tectonic criteria directly affect thermobaric conditions, control the evolutionary processes of destruction of organic matter. We discovered that the source of gases in the deposits of the Krosnenskaya zone is only kerogen. On the other hand, part of the deposits of the zones adjacent to Krosnenskaya show deviations from this regularity, and we assume that part of the gases in these deposits are formed because of oil cracking. The article shows that the values of the i-C4/n-C4 coefficient vary slightly for the deposits of the considered region. Obviously, this indicates that the evolution of organic matter for the considered deposits took place in close conditions, both in terms of thermobaric conditions and in terms of the composition of the parent material. This conclusion is confirmed by the results of calculations of the formation depths of equilibrium gas mixtures both by entropy maximization and by the method of constants of independent chemical reactions. Conclusions. Geochemical analysis of kerogen depletion by the methane generation rate proved that the kerogen deposits of the region are not completely depleted and retain the potential for further evolution with the formation of hydrocarbon gases. Based on the above considerations, we believe that the oil and gas potential of this region has not been studied enough and requires additional analysis, including the laying of new exploratory wells.

Neogene deposits of the Polyanytska Suite were exposed by the South Boryslav-1 well within the eastern block of the South Boryslav structure of the Boryslav oil and gas condensate field of the Outer Carpathians. The studied sediments of the Polyanytska Suite belong to the complex zone of planktonic foraminifers Globigerina pseudoedita with a characteristic association: Globigerina pseudoedita, Globoquadrina dehiscens, Dentoglobigerina langhiana, Trilobatus trilobus, Tenuitella brevispira, Tenuitella denseconnexa, Globorotalia tetracamerata, Globigerinella evoluta, Globigerinella obesa, Chiloguembelina gracillima. The Globigerina pseudoedita zone of planktonic foraminifera correlates with the zonal interval of nannoplankton NN2-NN3 of the Central Paratethys, which covers the upper part Eggerian, Eggenburgian, and the lowest part Ottnangian of the Central Paratethys and is compared with the upper Aquitan - the lower part of the Burdigal of the lower Miocene of the Neogene of the International Chronostratigraphic Scale. The sediments of the Polyanytska Suite were formed in a normally saline sea basin, with depths from the middle to the inner shelf. The medium shelf conditions (intervals 1812-1805 m; 1684-1645 m and 1546-1485 m in the the South Boryslav-1 well) are indicated by a relatively high percentage content and morphology of the shells of planktonic foraminifera, the taxonomic composition of calcareous benthic foraminifera. The presence of plankton indicates normal water salinity. Analysis of foraminifera in the interval 1395-1365 m indicates the depths of the inner shelf. The identified redeposited foraminifera of the Paleocene-Lower Oligocene testify to the erosion and demolition of clastic material from the uplifted part of the Carpathians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of the study is to investigate the relationships between soil gas composition and geological structures in a structurally complex area of the Carpathian fold and thrust belt. Surface geochemical surveys, aimed at determining the molecular and isotopic composition of soil gas samples, were carried out in the central part of the Polish Outer Carpathians in two major tectonic units, the Magura Unit and the Fore-Magura Group of units, which outcrop at the front of the former and within it as a tectonic window (the so-called Mszana Dolna Tectonic Window, MDTW). The tectonic structure of the area has numerous deformations, such as folds, thrusts, and strike-slip faults, that are accompanied by broad zones of mélange. In all 572 soil gas samples, the concentrations of light alkanes, gaseous alkenes as well as non-hydrocarbon (e.g. hydrogen) components were determined, and part of the samples were analysed to test the carbon isotope composition of methane and carbon dioxide. The results of the surface geochemical survey showed significant differences in the recorded microconcentrations of hydrocarbons within the tectonic units of the Outer Carpathians. Significantly higher concentrations of total alkanes C 2 -C 5 were mainly recorded in the MDTW, although the distribution of total alkane values within the Window shows strong connections with the arrangement of strata and the strike of faults and thrusts. Generally, the sealing is insufficient within the MDTW to support the existence of conventional economically viable hydrocarbon accumulations. Our data confirms the sealing role of the Magura Unit in the Carpathian oil system. Therefore, hydrocarbon sources (i.e. potential hydrocarbon accumulations) may be expected within the Fore-Magura Group beneath the cover of the Magura Unit. Our results are also of key importance for the interpretation of surface geochemistry data in other oil and gas provinces with a complex geological structure. • Surface geochemical signal varies depending on the tectonic unit in the Carpathians. • Geochemical signal indicates gas migration from Oligocene Menilite formation. • Surface geochemistry strongly supports hydrocarbon exploration in complex orogens. • C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 ratio determines the relative strength or activity of alkane migration. Determining the structure and evolution of landslides is crucial for geophysical hazard assessment. In this study, we employed an approach integrating the methodologies of multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and electrical conductivity to image temporal and spatial changes within a landslide in southern Poland. The area, located in the Outer Carpathians, experiences significant climate fluctuations, compounded by anthropogenic activities such as recreational skiing requiring artificial snow. Our combined seismic and electrical methods techniques reveal the landslide's susceptibility to environmental factors on both annual and seasonal scales. Additional analysis, including data clustering and remote sensing, identifies three distinct landslide zones with varying vulnerability to natural and anthropogenic influences. While focusing on a specific area, our approach has global applicability to similar mass movements. In this study, optical microscopic analyses were applied to evaluate the thermal maturity, characteristics of solid bitumen, and other organic matter finely dispersed in Oligocene shales of the Menilite Formation in the Iwonicz-Zdrój-Rudawka Rymanowska Fold (IRF) and Bóbrka-Rogi Fold (BRF) of the Central Carpathian Synclinorium of the Silesian Nappe, Outer Carpathians, Poland. The investigation was carried out at two-unit depths of the shallow and deeper D-1 sections (430 m - IRF and 4,300 m - BRF) and outcrop samples (BRF). The mean random huminite reflectance values indicate immature conditions with respect to hydrocarbon generation in samples from the D-1 shallow section (VRo ≈ 0.40%) and in the outcrop samples (VRo = 0.36%). The degree of thermal maturity of the organic matter from a depth of about 4,300 m - BRF based on random vitrinite (VRo ≈ 0.80%) and solid bitumen (BRo ≈ 0.65%) reflectance measurements is associated with the "oil window" for petroleum generation. The organic components dispersed in the examined Menilite Formation samples are typical for hydrocarbon-prone organic matter, suggesting the dominant kerogen type II. The potential precursor maceral for solid bitumen occurring in the examined samples from the deeper D-1 sections is largely the alginite maceral. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article sets out to identify, delimit, and interpret the sheep-farming landscapes of Wallachian origin that lie within the area of medium and low mountain ranges of the Outer Carpathians and that share a uniform geological and morphological structure (the Flysch Carpathians). The subjects of the research are the mid-forest clearings and the farm buildings erected on them, which form a specific type of landscape on which sheep farming has identifiable impacts. The article is an attempt to elaborate a typology of sheep farming and the mixed pastoral/ agricultural, sheltering and sheep-farming (Polish: polaniarskie) landscapes of the subecumene zone based on the structure and function of the economic activity on those landscapes. Sheep-farming landscapes are those shaped by the pastoral-agricultural economy in the mountain regions of the Carpathians. The study responds to the need to interpret areas and forms of sheep farming with the aim of protecting not only the unique heritage of the Wallachian shepherds' lifestyle and culture but also the landscapes resulting from the European Landscape Convention (October 20, 2000). These landscapes are disappearing rapidly due to the unprofitability of rearing livestock, and they are becoming relics and being absorbed through natural forest succession. Preserving the practices and unique history and culture of Carpathian sheep-farming landscapes, including those in the Outer Carpathians, will allow for the protection of not only the landscapes' identity but also the heritage of the Wallachian highlanders and their biodiverse high alpine meadows. In line with innovative ethnographic research methods, the study's first stage consisted of taking stock of sheep-farming areas by combining cartographic materials supported by remote sensing with source materials collected through interviews with living witnesses of sheep-farming practices. Sheep-farming landscapes within the Outer Carpathians have a complex historical and cultural structure strongly linked to its current socioeconomic situation. Yet, the sheep-farming landscape of this mountain region has yet to be defined architecturally and physiognomically as a type of rural agricultural landscape. With the aim of promoting the preservation of the region's sheep-farming landscapes, the article presents its complex structure and function, along with the conditions needed to maintain it. The abandonment of mid-forest clearings would have implications beyond sheep-farming landscapes: it would also result in a lack of viewing opportunities within the mountain landscape, resulting in a loss of beauty and visual value that would impact the status of the Carpathians as a priority landscape. The Dynów Marl Member of the Menilite Formation in Poland is one of the most significant lithostratigraphic units containing fauna of the early Oligocene Paratethys. The fish fauna from this member is presented, including three shark taxa and eight teleost taxa. The connection between the Upper Rhine Graben and the Central Paratethys in the calcareous nannoplankton zone NP23 (about 30-32 Ma ago) is consistent with the occurrence of the teleost Anenchelum glarisianum and the shark Keasius parvus. The presence of the teleosts Scopeloides glarisianus, Vinciguerria obscura and Oligophus moravicus confirms the connections between the Eastern and Central Paratethys. The distribution of the ichthyofauna supports the existence of a marine connection between the North Sea, the Upper Rhine Graben, the northwestern Tethys, and the Central and Eastern Paratethys during the early Oligocene. The fish assemblage shows a high percentage of fishes, whose extant relatives are living in the depth interval between 0 and 500 m. The presence of Gonostomatidae, Phosichthyidae and Myctophidae indicates normal salinity in the deep pelagic life zones. The fish fauna show distinctly Paratethyan affinities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research focuses on two new occurrences of sedimentary concretions in the Subsilesian Unit of the Outer Western Carpathians (Czech Republic) from non-calcareous clays and claystones of the Paleocene to the Eocene age. Powder X-ray diffraction study proved heterogenous matrix, varying in content of siderite, Mn-rich siderite, Ca-rich rhodochrosite and fluorapatite. Electron microscopy revealed microsparitic carbonates with indistinct zoning. According to the geochemical and stable isotope clues the concretions originated in medium to highly reducting environment during early diagenesis. Stable isotope δ13C values (-11.3 and -4.8 ‰ PDB) and δ18O (1.8 and 1.0 ‰ PDB) correspond well to early diagenetic marine carbonates and part of the CO2 was derived from oxidation of biological material. Weathering of concretions has been on the surface and along fissures. While siderite-rich concretions produce goethite, rhodochrositerich concretions produce a cellular structure of todorokite, birnessite and buserite on rims of carbonate cores. Fissure mineralisation contains association of goethite accompanied by native selenium and clausthalite. The origin of the selenium minerals is interpreted as products on the redox barrier between Mn2+/Mn4+ and/or Fe2+/Fe3+, where selenites and selenates are highly soluble but native selenium and selenides are extremely insoluble. The Zembrzyce Beds were studied to interpret the environments and facies in the western part of the Siary Subunit. New sedimentological data were obtained for the reconstruction of the depositional architecture of the Zembrzyce Beds. Based on detailed facies analysis, 9 facies and 4 facies associations were recognized. The facies associations represent different architectural elements of a submarine fan, such as: termination of distributary channel with transition to depositional lobe (distal part of mid-fan/outer fan sub-deposystem), lobes and distal lobes (outer fan sub-deposystem). According to the classification of Reading & Richards (1994) the fan deposystem can be classified as mud/sand-rich ramp. This system consists of several elongated lobes that formed synchronously, migrated laterally, and then retreated or decayed. The depositional system was supplied from the north and north-east. The inner-fan sub-deposystem was not detected. The sediments were deposited by high- and low-density turbidity currents and hyper-concentrated density flows sensu Mulder & Alexander (2001) with participation of the depositional background processes (pelagic settling). The sedimentary conditions of the Zembrzyce Beds during the Late Eocene were controlled by tectonic movements, the progress of the subduction and the global sea level changes.

Inherited tectonic structures, ongoing tectonic deformation, and variations in relative rock uplift rates play an important role in conditioning the processes of relief development. Their influence among other factors, such as climate and lithology, can be quantified using landscape analysis, and geomorphometric indices, in particular. The usage of landscape analysis in recent years is increasing systematically due to the constant improvement of the digital elevation models and GIS software that significantly facilitate this approach. In this study, we aim to recognize the influence of tectonic structures and processes on relief development in the low mountains with moderate relief of the Soła River catchment in the Western Outer Carpathians. To this end, we calculated geomorphometric indices (river longitudinal profile, stream-length gradient index, minimum bulk erosion, relief ratio, circulatory ratio, elongation ratio, and hypsometric integral) for the Sola River and its 47 sub-catchments using a 25-m spatial resolution Digital Terrain Elevation Data Level 2. Additionally, we identified lineaments and knickpoints and correlated the computed results with local and regional fault networks, variations in lithology, and climate fluctuations. Obtained results indicate a significant impact of inherited tectonic structures on the relief development of the Soła River catchment, i.e., directions of principal ridges and valleys follow the orientation of main folds and faults recorded in this area. Anomalously high values of minimum bulk erosion, river gradient, and stream-length gradient index allowed us to define two areas with higher relative uplift rates: 1) the Sola Gorge and 2) the Beskid Żywiecki Mts. Polish Outer Carpathians are generally considered as an area of low strain rate and low seismic activity. However, the possibility of neotectonic processes should be considered in geohazard estimations. Observed bends in the direction of river valleys that do not correspond with changes in lithology could be related to active strike-slip faults. These are probably the reactivated basement structures, copied in the thin-skinned nappe cover, as a result of the accommodation of the Mur-Žilina Fault Zone resulting from the tectonic push of the Alcapa (Alpine-Carpathian-Pannonian) microplate against the European plate. Thus, the role of recent tectonic activity in relief development of the Sola River catchment even though appears to be subsidiary at the most, should not be excluded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the relationship between the distributions of direct and indirect, surface geochemical indices in the selected part of the Outer Carpathians. The research included analysis of molecular composition of soil gas samples and calcite contents as well as the measurements of magnetic susceptibility and pH of soil samples. The survey contained 96 soil gas samples collected from 1.2 m depth and 96 soil samples taken from interval 0.7–0.8 m depth. The maximum concentrations of methane, total alkanes C2–C5 and total alkenes C2–C4 were: 2100, 10.43 and 0.772 ppm. The magnetic susceptibility values changed from 3.6 to 21.5 x 10–8 m3/kg. The calcium carbonate contents varied from 0.02 to 29.92 wt% and the pH values measured in soil solutions obtained changed from 4.5 to 8.3. Although the results demonstrate no correlation between the direct soil gas anomalies and the indirect geochemical indicators, the integrated profiles in Fig. 7 suggest possible haloes in the calcite/magnetic data that could be related to hydrocarbons migrating from depth. There are, however, various independent mechanisms that might control the appearance of these mineral anomalies. Secondary changes of mineral composition of soils disclosed by the indirect methods, even if controlled by hydrocarbon migration throughout geological time, might cause some closure of migration pathways, influencing the location of active hydrocarbon migration pathways. Comprehensive interpretation of the results obtained by direct and indirect methods in this paper provides another positive example helping to better understand the complicated mechanism of hydrocarbon migration and the potential usefulness of indirect methods suitable for hydrocarbon exploration. In the Late Jurassic, the rifting process led to the disintegration of the southern margin of the North European Platform and to the opening of the Outer Carpathian flysch basin sedimentary system. The initial sediments accumulated in the northern part of the basin are related to both the destruction and resedimentation of older platform deposits. Since the sedimentary succession of this pre-flysch phase was consumed by the Miocene subduction, its only traces are represented, nowadays, by clasts preserved as exotics in the succeeding flysch deposits. Our analysis of foraminifers as well as calcareous and organic dinoflagellate cysts found in these exotics confirms the Oxfordian–early Kimmeridgian timing of the platform phase that preceded the opening of the flysch basin. The exotics are represented by three main facies types: sponge–microbial limestones, oncoid–intraclastic–Crescentiella limestones and fine-grained, biodetrital limestones with Saccocoma. These deposits are related to mid-ramp to outer-ramp settings. The land influence was rather weak, and these sedimentary settings were dominated by pelagic/hemipelagic accumulation. The studied facies are similar to facies types widely distributed over the northern shelf area of the Western Tethys (e.g., extra-Carpathian southern Poland, Carpathian Foredeep basement, southern Germany). In turn, coeval strata known from the part of the Magura Basin and of the Penninic–Pieninic Ocean, which were situated in more southern part of the Tethys, yielded different microfacies reflecting significant differences between the sedimentary settings of the study area and its southern extensions. The biostratigraphy of the Outer Carpathians is based mainly on the ranges of agglutinated foraminifera. Species acmes provide the opportunity to enhance and support the existing biozonations. Assemblages of agglutinated foraminifera from the Campanian to Eocene of various tectonic-structural units were analyzed in terms of their qualitative and quantitative occurrence. In this stratigraphic interval, 19 species display significantly increased abundance within a relatively short interval: Caudammina gigantea (Geroch) (upper Santonian–lowermost Maastrichtian), Caudammina ovulum (Grzybowski) (Campanian–Danian), Placentammina placenta (Grzybowski)-Saccammina grzybowskii (Schubert) (upper Campanian–Danian), Caudammina excelsa (Dylążanka) (lowermost Maastrichtian–Danian), Caudammina ovuloides (Grzybowski) (Danian–Selandian), Hormosina velascoensis (Cushman) (upper Danian–Selandian), Praesphaerammina gerochi (Hanzlíková) (Thanetian), Glomospira charoides (Jones et Parker)-Glomospira gordialis (Jones et Parker) (uppermost Thanetian–lowermost Ypresian), Trochammina spp. (upper Thanetian–lower Ypresian), Reticulophragmium amplectens (Grzybowski) (Lutetian–Bartonian), Reophax duplex (Grzybowski)-Reophax “pilulifer” Brady group of taxa (Lutetian–Priabonian), Haplophragmoides walteri (Grzybowski)-Haplophragmoides nauticus Kender, Kaminski et Jones (Lutetian–Bartonian), Spiroplectammina spectabilis (Grzybowski) (Lutetian–Priabonian), “Ammodiscus” latus Grzybowski (Bartonian–Priabonian), Praesphaerammina subgaleata (Vašíček) (Lutetian–Bartonian). The biostratigraphic position and quantitative data of species with increased abundance are presented.

The subject of this study is the chemical composition of potentially geothermal waters of the Mesozoic basement of the central part of the Carpathian Foredeep and the Outer Carpathians regions. The research objectives were: (1) to identify statistically significant differences between the chemical composition of waters from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic aquifers, and between the waters of both regions; and (2) the discovery of zones indicating active water exchange—attractive due to the operational efficiency of wells. Knowledge of the chemical composition of water allows for the preliminary identification of areas of interest for the exploitation of water for recreational, healing, and heating purposes. The research methods used were: (1) statistical tests and (2) methods of multivariate data analysis, such as the Kruskal–Wallis test and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The performed tests and statistical analyses allowed us to draw conclusions about significant differences between the chemical composition of waters from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic aquifers, and the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep and the Outer Carpathians. They indicated the existence of a zone with symptoms of active water exchange. Before establishing the fact of active exchange of waters in this zone, further research should be undertaken.

The structural pattern developed within metre to microscopic scale thrust and strike-slip fault zones exposed in the Palaeogene flysch rocks of the Fore-Dukla Thrust Sheet in the south-eastern part of the Silesian Nappe, Outer Carpathians, Poland, reveals evidence for upper crustal deformation and fluid flow. Syntectonic dawsonite [NaAlCO3(OH)2] indicates the following series of deformational events within the fault zones: i) detachment and buckle folding resulting from movement along thrust faults; ii) faulting as a compensation of the shortening, resulting in the fault propagation folding, breakthrough thrust faulting and imbrications; and iii) strike-slip faulting. The microstructural pattern coupled with the growth of a related sequence of carbonate minerals within the fault zones, followed by present-day dawsonite precipitation and tufa formation, indicate a continuing influence of fluids within the Silesian Nappe up to and including modern time. Structural observations at metre to microscopic scales coupled with EDS mapping of rocks indicate that dawsonite is a unique tool for the reconstruction of subsequent deformation in the Fore-Dukla Thrust Sheet. Gobies (family Gobiidae) were in the past and now important components of marine ecosystems as an essential part of the food chain. However, the early fossil record of this group is relatively meager, with only scarce skeletal remains. The oldest known representative of the genus Gobius has been recently described from the Early Miocene of Czech Republic as Gobius jarosi Přikryl & Reichenbacher, 2018. Here we present a detailed study of a well-preserved goby skeleton of the same age from the Harta locality (Poland). This specimen is assumed as belonging to Gobius jarosi based on its almost complete morphological and meristic identity with the type material from the Vážany nad Litavou locality. Some aspects of the paleogeography and paleoecology of the Early Miocene fish assemblage from Harta with special reference to the Carpathian Basin are also discussed in this paper. An interpretation of the deep structure of the Pieniny Klippen Belt in Poland is presented, utilizing a high-resolution deep seismic reflection survey. The studied profiles reach a depth of around 23 km. The seismic lines depict the structure and mutual relationships between the main domains analyzed—the Central Carpathians (CC), the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB) and the Outer Carpathians. The seismic lines show the Central Carpathian Paleogene (CCP) sediments covering the Tatric units and overlying Krížna and Choč nappes of the CC south of the PKB. The entire nappe pile comprising the CC units is thrust over sedimentary rocks that probably derived from the European Plate, representing a mixture of autochthonous platform Paleozoic to Neogene sediments and slices of Outer Carpathian and PKB rocks. The older crystalline basement of the European Plate is suspected to be below these sedimentary rocks. The reflections below 20 km depth show a possible boundary between different crustal elements within this plate. The PKB is part a of 3–5 km wide flower structure, limited by fault zones that include faults cutting across sediments of the CCP and the Magura Nappe. The fault marking the southern limit of the PKB is particularly well visible in the seismic sections. The Albian–Lower Miocene flysch sequences, constituting the main components of the PKB, form north-vergent thrust-sheets. During the Albian to Miocene the PKB originated as an accretionary prism in front of the moving CC Plate, followed by plate rotation and strike-slip processes. The entire CC nappe pile is thrust over the Precambrian and Lower Paleozoic crystalline basement of the European Plate and probably slices of the PKP. The Outer Carpathians display an allochthonous character above the European Plate and comprise several north-verging imbricated nappes (thrust-sheets). This study focuses on Flysch Carpathian river valleys recently reshaped by the fluvial erosion. Geological structures of these mountains are rather monotonous. However, numerous floods that occurred in recent decades and the abrasion of banks of water reservoirs have made many parts of valleys particularly interesting not only for geologists but also for tourists and for local people as a pleasant place for recreation. New outcrops of flysch sediments appear in different spatial and social contexts. On the basis fieldwork observations in years 2009–2018, four case studies of the newly emerging geosites in the Polish Flysch Carpathians are presented. In one case, few people seem to notice the new geosite. In two other cases, local communities have taken initiatives to use the newly emerging geosites for education. The fourth case is the walking path at the foothill of a rocky hill with the reconstructed medieval castle at the top. The owner of the castle arranged this path as an additional commercial attraction for visitors of the castle. The author analyses also possibilities of the formal protection of the newly emerging geosites within the existing Polish nature protection system. Crystalline exotic boulders within the sedimentary sequences of the Outer Carpathians likely represent Proto-Carpathian basement, which was exposed and eroded during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of the Western Carpathian basin. The majority of the boulders were derived from the Silesian Ridge, which separated the Magura Basin and the Silesian Domains, and which became a source region during Late Cretaceous–Early Paleocene tectonism. Felsic crystalline clasts within the Silesian Nappe yield U–Pb zircon magmatic protolith ages of 603.7 ± 3.8 Ma and 617.5 ± 5.2 Ma while felsic crystalline clasts within the Subsilesian Nappe yield an age of 565.9 ± 3.1 Ma and thus represent different magmatic cycles. The U–Pb zircon data also imply that the Silesian Ridge was a fragment of the eastern part of the Brunovistulia microcontinent. The presence of inherited zircon cores, dated at 1.3 and 1.7 Ga, suggests a Baltican source for the clasts, as opposed to Gondwana. We infer that Late Neoproterozoic felsic magmatism within the Proto-Carpathian continent represents a long-living magmatic arc, which formed during prolonged Timmanian/Baikalian rather than Pan-African/Cadomian orogenesis. Mafic exotic blocks, found within the Magura Nappe, yield U–Pb zircon ages of 613.3 ± 2.6 Ma and 614.6 ± 2.5 Ma and likely represent a fragment of an obducted ophiolitic sequence. The protolith of these mafic boulders could represent Paleoasian Ocean floor located to the east of Cadomia, obducted during later orogenic processes and incorporated into the accretionary prism. All analysed exotic clasts show no evidence for younger (Variscan) reworking, which is characteristic of both western Brunovistulia and the Central Western Carpathians and the Cadomian elements of Western Europe. The Silesian and Subsilesian basins thus had a likely source area in the eastern part of Brunovistulia, while the source of the Magura Basin was the Fore-Magura Ridge, whose basement potentially represents an accretionary prism on the margin of the East European Craton. The Ostravice Sandstone Member was identified and described as a lithostratigraphic unit in the Polish part of the Outer Carpathians. This division occurs in the lowermost part of the Godula Formation, is underlain by variegated deposits of the Mazák Formation or directly by the Barnasiówka and Lhoty formations, and overlain by the Czernichów Member of the Godula Formation. Domination by thick- and very thick-bedded sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones and conglomerates rich in calcareous clasts, mostly of the Štramberk-type limestones, is typical for the Ostravice Sandstone Member. These deposits are widespread between the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mountains in the Czech Republic and the Ciężkowice Foothills in Poland. The documentation of the Ostravice Sandstone Member occurrence as well as the petrological, sedimentological features, and inventory of the carbonate clasts are presented here.

Small perch-like fishes from the Oligocene of the Paratethys have been traditionally assigned to Serranus budensis (Heckel, 1856). A morphological revision of the holotype and specimens previously assigned to S. budensis from the Outer Carpathians, Poland, is provided herein. They are re-assigned to the species Oligoserranoides budensis (Heckel, 1856) — Percoidei incertae sedis. New specimens assigned to Ol. budensis from the Outer Carpathians, Poland, are introduced. Our results reveal that Ol. budensis is very similar to the species Caucasoserranoides morozkiensis, Carpathoserranoides brnoensis, Carpathoserranoides polonicus and Oligoserranoides comparabilis, and further studies are necessary to revise the validity of those species. Ol. budensis shares many characters with genera Lutjanus and Ocyurus of the superfamily Lutjanoidea. Ol. budensis differs from Lutjanoidea in having a toothless palatine. The palaeobiogeography of Oligocene small perch-like fishes in the Paratethys is presented and discussed.

The principal source rocks in the Outer Carpathians are organic‐rich shales in the Oligocene to Lower Miocene Menilite Formation. The average total organic carbon (TOC) content in the Menilite Formation is 4–8 wt%; the maximum measured is 26 wt%. Organic matter (OM) is oil‐prone Type II kerogen derived mainly from algae and cyanobacteria which was deposited under euxinic conditions. The thermal maturity of the Menilite shales varies significantly within the Outer Carpathians, both vertically in relation to burial depth and laterally in different tectonic units, and increases from external to internal parts of the orogenic belt. In the Polish sector of the Magura Nappe have long been known and exploited carbonate mineral waters, saturated with carbon dioxide, known as the "shchava (szczawa)". These waters occur mainly in the Krynica Subunit of the Magura Nappe, between the Dunajec and Poprad rivers, close to the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB). The origin of these waters is still not clear, this applies to both "volcanic" and "metamorphic" hypotheses. Bearing in mind the case found in the Szczawa tectonic window and our geological and geochemical studies we suggest that the origin of the carbon dioxide may be linked with the thermal/pressure alteration of organic matter of the Oligocene deposits from the Grybów Unit. These deposits, exposed in several tectonic windows of the Magura Nappe, are characterized by the presence of highly matured organic matter - the origin of the hydrocarbon accumulations. This is supported by the present-day state of organic geochemistry studies of the Carpathian oil and gas bed rocks. In our opinion origin of the carbon-dioxide was related to the southern, deep buried periphery of the Carpathian Oil and Gas Province. The Carpathians may play a significant role as a supplier of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Unfortunately, most of the discovered oil and gas deposits are recently only historical objects. An example is the Sękowa-Ropica Górna-Siary oil deposit located in the marginal part of the Magura Nappe where oil had been extracted in dug wells until the mid XX century. One of such extraction sites is the "Pusty Las" oilfield. In that area, 10 methane and carbon dioxide emission measurement sites were located, among which 4 in dried dug wells and 6 in dig wells still filled with oil and/or water. Dynamics of methane and carbon dioxide concentration changes were measured with the modified static chambers method. Gas samples were collected immediately after the installation of the chamber and again, after 5 and 10 minutes. In the case of reclaimed or dry dug wells, static chamber was installed directly at the ground surface. In wells still filled with oil and/or water the chamber was equipped with an "apron" mounted on special sticks. The dynamics of concentrations changes varied from -0.871 to 119.924 ppm·min-1 for methane and from -0.005 to 0.053% obj·min-1 for carbon dioxide. Average methane emission was 1.9 g·m-2·d-1 and that of carbon dioxide was 26.95 g·m-2·d-1. The measurements revealed that an abandoned oil field supplies significant amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere although the emission of methane is lower than that measured e.g. in mud volcanoes located in various parts of the world. The Oligocene Menilite Beds are considered the most important source rock for hydrocarbon accumulation in the Polish Carpathian region, whereas the Cretaceous Lgota Beds have been regarded as an additional potential source rock. Understanding their petrophysical and geochemical properties is essential for evaluating the hydrocarbon potential of these beds. This paper presents mineral and organic porosity characterization and focuses on factors responsible for the development of organic pores as a reflection of the depositional and diagenetic processes. Mudstones were evaluated as potential source and reservoir rocks, describing their diagenetic and thermal history and examining their effective porosity and permeability. The results show that the Lgota Beds mudstone in the Huczwice quarry is thermally mature (late oil/early gas window, T max 460–470 °C), containing type III kerogen and TOC between 0.68 wt% and 4.2 wt%, in contrast to the Menilite Beds mudstone (Monasterzec outcrop), which is thermally immature (T max <426 °C), containing type II kerogen and TOC content from 1.24 wt% to 8.7 wt%. The geochemical properties show that the Lgota mudstone is currently an ineffective source rock, whereas the Menilite mudstone can be a potential source rock. SEM-identified pores include mineral pores, organic pores and microfractures. Organic porosity is observable both in immature oil-prone type II kerogen and highly mature gas-prone type III kerogen. The amount of pores in organic matter increases with maturity, and no relation between TOC and organic porosity development has been observed. Palynofacies analysis showed that the Menilite and Lgota mudstones are dominated by amorphous organic matter, and that the Lgota mudstone also contains opaque woody material. MICP measurements indicate high (up to 15%) effective porosity values for the Menilite Beds and up to 8% for the Lgota Beds, with very low permeability values (<0.1 mD) in both cases. Isotherms obtained from nitrogen adsorption are type IV for the Lgota Beds and type II for the Menilite Beds, while the BET surface areas are around 13 m2/g and 3 m2/g, respectively. The Lgota Beds demonstrate advanced diagenetic processes such as compaction, cementation, dissolution, replacement, and transformation, which contributed to the significant reduction in porosity, while the Menilite Beds represent an early stage of burial with the prevailing impact of compaction and thus less destruction of original pores. Finally, the Menilite Beds from the Monasterzec outcrop do not demonstrate sufficient conditions for shale-oil/-gas source rock due to the lack of proper thermal maturity. Such criterion is fulfilled by the Lgota Beds in the Huczwice quarry, but due to very low hydrocarbon potential, the Lgota mudstone is an ineffective source rock. However, given the other petrophysical and geochemical properties, the analysed formations may constitute a basis for further research on the occurrence of unconventional reservoirs in the entire Carpathian region. • 90% of total porosity in Lgota and Menilite Beds mudstones is dominated by nanoporosity. • Organic pores are present in immature and mature mudstones. • No relation exists between TOC and organic porosity development. • The analysed formations may constitute a basis for further research on unconventional reservoirs in the Carpathian region. The discrepant arrangement of the Carpathian nappes and syntectonic deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep reveals the oroclinal migration of the subduction direction of the platform margin during the Late Cenozoic. Formation of the nappes was induced by their detachment from disintegrated segments of the European Platform; the segments were shortened as a result of their vertical rotation in zones of compressional sutures. It finds expression in local occurrence of the backward vergence of folding against the generally forward vergence toward the Carpathian Foredeep. The precompressional configuration of sedimentation areas of particular nappes was reconstructed with application of the palinspastic method, on the basis of the hitherto undervalued model which emphasizes the influence of the subduction and differentiated morphology of the platform basement on the tectonic evolution of the fold and thrust belt. Superposition of the palaeogeographic representations and the present geometry of the orogen allows understanding of the impact of the magnitudes of tectonic displacements on the differentiation of the geological structure in the NE segment of the Carpathians. The contribution presents the results acquired both by direct cognitive geothermic methods and by modelling approaches of the lithosphere thermal state in the region of the Transcarpathian depression and surrounding units. The activities were aimed at the determination of the temperature field distribution and heat flow density distribution in the upper parts of the Earth's crust within the studied area. Primary new terrestrial heat flow density map was constructed from values determined for boreholes, from their interpretations and from newest outcomes of geothermal modelling methods based on steady-state and transient approaches, and also from other recently gained geophysical and geological knowledge. Thereafter we constructed the maps of temperature field distribution for selected depth levels of up to 5000 m below the surface. For the construction we have used measured borehole temperature data, the interpolation and extrapolation methods, and the modelling results of the refraction effects and of the influences of source type anomalies. New maps and other geothermic data served for the determination of depths with rock temperatures suitable for energy utilization namely production of electric energy minimally by the binary cycles. Consequently the thermal conditions were used to identify the most perspective areas for geothermal energy exploitation in the region under study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The composition and features of numerous bioclasts found in the sandy/silty fraction of turbidite layers in the Middle- Upper Cenomanian deep-water sediments of the Silesian Nappe in the Outer Carpathians, dominated by sponge spicules, suggest that they originated from the growth and destruction of sponge assemblages formed on shelves of the northern margin of the Silesian Basin. The morphological types of spicules, by comparison with fossil and living species, lead to their attribution predominantly to three orders: Lithistida, Hadromerida and Astrophorida. Sponges lived in association with other benthic fauna such as calcareous benthic foraminifers and echinoids. Many sponge spicules were calcified in their primary environment before their redeposition by turbiditic flows. Favourable conditions for development of sponge assemblages occurred during the Cenomanian transgressions, being related to balanced delivery of sediment particles trapped by sponges and waters enriched with nutrients. The amount of nutrients absorbed by sponges is related to the dissolved silica content that originated from two sources: 1) terrestrial chemical weathering on the low-gradient plains of the shelves and 2) opal grains, such as siliceous plankton, suspended in the water column during bloom periods forced by seasonal upwelling. The locality of the northeastern most part of Slovakian Flysch belt belongs to interesting areas in terms of the interpretation of geothermal conditions in mutual relation with the lithosphere structure and their tectonic development. The evaluation of the geothermal energy sources parameters of this locality is likewise worthwhile. The region under study has the centre in position of the borehole Zboj ZB-1 and spreads out Slovakia also in Poland and Ukraine. Our contribution provides the analyses of existing geothermal data enhanced by the construction of temperature field models corresponding to the global and local aspects that influence the temperature and heat flow density distributions. The analyses are related to the structures and effects of separate phenomena along as well as across the Carpathian arc. The model calculations were carried out both by analytical and numerical methods of solving the heat transfer equations including their steady state forms and transient cases too. Besides the regional trend of thermal activity decrease in direction from East-Slovakian Basin to the outer Carpathian units the combined local influences are applied: subsurface thermophysical parameters of rock complexes distributions, non-stationary sources from supposed subvolcanic bodies in close surroundings of borehole Zboj ZB-1, and the effects of the hydrological factors. Considering the observed higher thermal activity in arched zone along the Carpathian structures we discussed the thermal effects of rock complexes supposed as a source of regional Carpathian Conductivity Anomaly and the transfer of heat from East-Slovakian Basin to Outer Carpathian Flysch units. The analysis and the modelling results suggest that the mentioned activity is caused by the influences of source type phenomena mainly related to deep fault systems at the margin of the European Platform. That means the anomalies in heat flow density distribution can reach the value 70 mW/m2 and more in the zone above the thermally active deep-fault system with the presence of volcanism and hydrothermal activities. Abstract: Eocene–Oligocene dolomite concretions and beds from the Grybów and Dukla units of the Polish Outer Carpathians were studied. These rocks occur in the organic carbon-rich, marine and fine-grained deposits of hemipelagic or turbiditic origin. Mineralogic, elemental and stable C and O isotopic composition of the dolomites was determined. Results indicate that the rocks were formed by precipitation of predominantly Fe-rich dolomite cement close to the sediment-water interface prior to significant compaction. The main source of bicarbonate for dolomite formation was bacterial methanogenesis as evidenced by the high δ13C values up to 16.6‰. The main source of alkalinity was probably weathering of silicate minerals which might have also liberated Ca and Mg ions for the dolomites to form. The distribution of these dolomites indicates that microbial methane production was widespread in the Silesian basin. Moreover, formation of some dolomites in the Eastern part of the Dukla unit was probably associated with gas hydrates as suggested by the elemental and oxygen isotopic composition of dolomitic matrix. Therefore, the dolomites may serve as a proxy of areas where biogenic methane was produced, where the rocks had high hydrocarbon potential, and where hydrates could have existed. Detailed mineralogic and petrographic analyses allowed for the reconstruction of the diagenetic sequence and the evolution of pore fluids. Textural relationships between successive cement generations indicate that the central parts of the composite dolomite crystals experienced corrosion and that the latest ankerite cement filled the secondary intragranular cavities within those crystals. This observation shows that reconstructions of pore fluid evolution based on core-to-rim analyses of such composite crystals may lead to wrong interpretations. Septarian cracks developed in the dolomites are often filled with multistage cements. The earliest generations are ferroan dolomite and ankerite cements which precipitated within the cracks simultaneously to the ferroan dolomite and ankerite cements from the matrix of the dolomitic rocks which shows that septarian cracking occurred very early, during the final stages of concretionary formation. These cements were followed by the late-diagenetic precipitates, mainly quartz, kaolinite and blocky calcite. This calcite is commonly associated with bitumen which shows that it precipitated during or after oil migration in the decarboxylation zone. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A small group of Tithonian planktonic ciliates, little-known in the area of the Polish Outer Carpathians, has been recorded in exotic limestones from the western part of the Silesian Nappe. Eleven species of the family Chitinoidellidae Trejo, 1975, belonging to the genera Chitinoidella, Daciella, Dobeniella, Longicollaria and Popiella are described here. The majority of studied samples have been assigned to the Boneti Subzone of the Chitinoidella Zone. The stratigraphic position of the Goryczkowiec Sandstone reflects the Paleocene ridge geodynamics in the Outer Carpathian basins. The Goryczkowiec Sandstone was deposited on the slope of a ridge, known as the Subsilesian Sedimentary Area that originated during reorganization of the Outer Carpathian realm. A Paleocene age of this sandstone, documented clearly by autochthonous foraminiferal and algal assemblages indicates the time of the final formation of the Subsilesian Ridge. Abundant calcareous material of biogenic origin was transported by turbidity currents into deeper zones. This material includes fragments of carbonate buildups represented by algae, bryozoans and other organisms growing in the shallower part of the ridge. The Goryczkowiec Sandstone, previously known as the Szydłowiec Sandstone, is here redefined as a new lithostratigraphic unit within the Subsilesian Sedimentary Area in the marginal Outer Carpathians in Poland. Recently methane has been regarded as one of the most hazardous gases in the Earth's atmosphere. Among important sources of methane emissions are leaking petroleum wells, both production and abandoned. The following paper presents an example of an optimal solution to the planning, execution, and interpretation of the results of surface geochemical surveys around decommissioned or abandoned, as well as production petroleum wells. The research consisted of the analytical results of the molecular composition of 94 soil gas samples collected around 3 wells in one of the oil and gas fields in the Polish Outer Carpathians. Using a patented sampling kit, soil gas was taken at 1.2 m depth at sampling sites located within a radius of 60 m from a particular well. Samples were analyzed chromatographically for their molecular composition. The results revealed the following maximum concentrations of selected gaseous components of soil gas: methane – almost 51 vol%, total alkanes C 2 –C 5 – 0.51 vol%, total alkenes C 2 –C 4 – 158.4 ppm, hydrogen – 0.1 vol%, carbon dioxide – 11.2 vol%, and nitrogen - 90.5 vol%. Detailed statistical analysis of the results demonstrated the presence of anomalous concentrations of methane and/or higher hydrocarbons that originated from leaking wells but also from the complex and complicated microbial processes that may be related to spills of crude oil or hydrocarbon fuels. The methodology of interpretation of the geochemical results applied may be useful in the evaluation of hydrocarbon distribution patterns and may provide an effective tool for the evaluation of the integrity of oil wells. • Soil gas samples in the vicinity of oil wells should be collected using a soil probe. • The composition of soil gases should be tested at least 60 m from the well. • Combined analysis of soil gas composition and hydrocarbon ratios is necessary. • Not every anomalous methane concentration is indicative of a borehole leak. • Hydrocarbon pollution and microbial methane may appear in the vicinity of boreholes. This paper presents the different analogue scenarios of the tectonic evolution of the northern Outer Carpathians (i.e. the Western and northern Eastern Outer Carpathians) which formed as an accretionary wedge in front of the East Alpine–Carpathian–Pannonian (ALCAPA) block during Oligocene–Miocene times. Currently, this fold-and-thrust belt forms an arc which is asymmetrically convex to the north and wider in its eastern part. Palaeomagnetic investigations have suggested that the rocks of the arc underwent counter-clockwise rotation along almost the whole arc, which is difficult to explain as an effect of simple indentation of the triangular indenter. In this case two branches of the arc should be rotated in the opposite directions. The structural evolution of the Western Outer Carpathians is characterized by superposition of two successive tectonic shortening events directed N–S and NE–SW. The results of the presented analogue modelling suggest that two scenarios of the geodynamic evolution of the studied belt could explain the occurrence of such differently oriented shortening events: (1) two phases of differently directed indentation (first to the N, then to the NE) and (2) indenter movement to the NE with simultaneous counter-clockwise rotation. However, the experiment in which the moving indenter is simultaneously rotated produces the most suitable model. The counter-clockwise rotation of the material is only possible in front of both sides of the convex indenter in this model. The results of the analogue modelling also prove that rotation of the ALCAPA block started after formation of the Magura nappe (the innermost nappe of the Western Outer Carpathians). Outcrops of marls, occurring within the sandstone-shaly flysch deposits of the Polish part of Outer Carpathians, considered to be locus typicus of these rocks, were described, measured and sampled. Lithologic features of marls, representing 15 complexes of different age and occurring in 15 complexes of various tectonic units, are presented (Fig. 1, 2). The present studies were concerning Jurassic marls from the Silesian Unit (Goleszów Marls), Upper Cretaceous marls from the Skole and Sub-Silesian Units (Siliceous-Fucoid and Węgierka Marls and Węglowka, Frydek, Jasienica and Zegocina Marls respectively), and Eocene-Oligocene marls from the Magura, Fore-Magura and Skole Units (Łącko, Zembrzyce, Budzów, Leluchów and Niwa, as well as Grybów and Sub-Cergowa and Dynów Marls respectively). The former opinions on lithology, age, formal subdivision, sedimentation conditions and genesis of these rocks are discussed (Table 1, 2; Fig. 1). Detailed description of the above mentioned marl-bearing complexes are presented and for each of them the typical lithological features are determined (Tables 3 - 20). The results of profiling are presented against the background of geological studies of the Carpathian marls. The results of lithologic studies are compared to form a classification scheme and are used as the basis of distinguishing genetic types of marls. Moreover, the interpretation of the conditions of sedimentation of these rocks is presented. According to the present author's studies, in the outcrops of marls considered to be locus typicus of the above mentioned rocks, there are both monolithic and polylithic complexes exposed. The polylithic complexes contain apart from marls intercalations of arenaceous-shaly flysch (Table 19). Event sedimentation of marly facies, appearing at different times and in various parts of the Carpathian basin is the result of periodically repeating conditions favouring the sedimentation of marls. Carpathian marls seem to be lithologically diversified. This is a natural for these rocks, uniting in variable proportions the features of limestones, clays, siliceous and clastic rocks. Depending on the proportions of these components, they display the features of the dominant one. The lithologies of Carpathian marls do not depend on their age and position in the sedimentation basin. Nevertheless, apart from visible differentiation of marls they show many common lithologic features: fine grain size, in general corresponding to silty-clayey fraction, variable but usually considerable thickness of beds of nonarenaceous variety of marls (0.5 - 1000 cm) and small thickness of arenaceous one (2 - 62 cm). In the majority of marly complexes, the arenaceous variety, starved ripplemarks, thin sandstone beds and sandy lamines occur in bottom parts of marly beds. The majority of marls display variably developed lamination and the occurrence of burrows (Table 19). Taking into account the Ghibaudo's (1992) classification it was estimated that the marls in question can be assigned to three finest grained lithofacies: M (mud beds), MT (mud-silty couplets) and MS (mud-sand couplets) as well as to the MyG facies (muddy gravel). These lithofacies appear in marly complexes in various proportions (Table 20). Internal structures of beds are evidence of settling grains from suspension (depositional interval e2), interrupted with different intensity by deposition from traction (depositional intervals b, d and e1), and reworking of sediments by weak bottom currents (depositional intervals c and c0). The occurrence of similar lithologic features in marls of different age that come from different tectonic units is evidence of the repeating of similar sedimentation conditions, favouring the development of marly facies, at different times and in different parts of sedimentation basin of the Outer Carpathians. According to the present author's analysis, there is a distinct relationship between the appearance of marls and tectonic evolution of the Outer Carpathian basin. Marls initiate sedimentation, indicate reconstruction stages and are closing the deposition in the Outer Carpathian basin (Fig. 1). Marls appear in the Polish part of Outer Carpathians in Upper Jurassic, initiating sedimentation in the northern Tethyan domain. Subsequently, they occur within Upper Cretaceous sandy-shaly flysch, indicating the reconstitution stage of Outer Carpathian basin and from Eocene to Oligocene are completing the deposition in successively closing basins (Fig. 1). The appearance of marls indicates the stages of tectonic evolution of the Outer Carpathians. The opening and reconstitution of a basin is accompanied by appearance of marls distinguished as preorogenic (Goleszów, Siliceous-Fucoid, Węgierka. Frydek and Żegocina Marls), their closing - synorogenic marls (Lącko, Budzów, Zembrzyce, Leluchów, Niwa, Grybów, Sub-Cergowa and Dynów Marls). Marls represent sediments redeposited from shelves to deeper parts of basins in the form of muds (M, MT and MS facies) and as olistostromes and olistoliths (MyG facies) (Tables 19, 20). Marls redeposited in the form of olistoliths appear in the stage of opening of the Outer Carpathian basin on the boundary of the Jurassic/Cretaceous period (Goleszow Marls) and in the stage of its Upper Cretaceous reconstitution (Baculite and Zegocina? Marls). In the complexes containing redeposited marls in the form of muds, submarine slumps occur (Table 19). These features indicate tectonic disquiet accompanying deposition of marls. Among the marls studied, dark coloured rocks appear (black, bluish-gray, greenish-gray) and olive and light- coloured (creamy, beige), as well as variegated and red (Table 19). The differentiation of colours indicates sedimentation of Carpathian marls both in oxygenated environments and those that are oxygen-depleted. The analysis of evolution of the Carpathian basins indicates that they were starved basins during sedimentation of marls. Limited supply of clastic material in such basins suggests the discussion on the source of the clay minerals - one of essential components of marls. The occurrence of pyroclastic strata in sediments of the same age (Fig. 1) suggests their origin to be related to volcanic material. The data of other authors, and the detailed profiling by the present author of outcrops that are considered to be locus typicus of marls and the appearance of which indicates a distinct correlation to tectonics of the Outer Carpathians, allowed to the present author to systematize and broaden the geological knowledge concerning the evolution of the marly facies in the northern part of the Tethyan Ocean. The conditions of sedimentation of marls deduced from the analysis of evolution of sedimentation basin of the Outer Carpathians and from lithologic data can be summarized as follows: - marls appear episodically in the Outer-Carpathian basin (mono- and polylithic complexes) and determine the stages of its tectonic evolution; they initiate the stages of opening and indicate the reconstitution of basins (preorogenic marls) and closing sedimentation cycle (synorogenic marls); - marls were deposited under conditions of tectonic disquiet (the presence of MyG facies), accompanied by volcanic activity (occurrence if pyroclastic rocks within chronostratigraphic equivalents of the marls studied); - marly deposits were formed both under oxidizing and oxygen-depleted conditions, i.e. when the availability of oxygen in the bottom sediments was limited (variable colouration); - marls represent the deposits of debris flows (MyG facies) redeposited from shelves in lithified form into zones that are situated close to the basin margins (olistoliths) and as resuspensed shelf muds accumulating within basinal sediments in the seafloor depressions (trap sediments) by suspension settling mechanism and periodically reworked by currents (M, MT, and MS facies). Abstract: Comparative research carried out within two different basins, one in the Carpathians of Poland (Late Jurassic to Early Miocene) and another in the Apenninic-Maghrebian mountain chain of Sicily (Triassic-Miocene), indicate significant similarity not only in their evolution but also in the sedimentary features of horizons with olistoliths. The olistolith-bearing units are genetically related to stages of tectonic evolution and are independent of the size of the basins and of duration of these stages. However, the observed differences in composition and size of olistoliths suggested, among the others relationship with the size of source areas and thickness of their sedimentary cover. Abstract: The Silesian Series deposited in the proto-Silesian and Silesian basins and preserved within the Silesian Nappe, represents most complete continuous basinal sedimentary succession (Late Jurassic–Early Miocene) within the Outer Carpathians. It contains intercalations of numerous olistostromes that occurred during every stage of flysch basin evolution, from rift and post-rift, through orogenic to postorogenic stage. The olistostromes represent sediments of sub-marine debris-flows and avalanches. They are of different size and composition and were derived from ridges and their slopes bordering proto-Silesian and Silesian Basins. 0However the main source was the tectonically active southern slope and adjacent ridges — the Silesian and Bukowiec ridges. Composition of olistostromes is an important source of knowledge about the geological structure and history of ridges and basin slopes, which now are not preserved. Some large olistoliths and olistoplaques have been incorrectly interpreted as thrust sheets, so detail studies of their true origin allowed correct interpretation of local tectonics. Abstract: New balanced and restored cross-sections and a 2D kinematic model illustrate the present geometry of the northeastern Outer Carpathians and quantify their orogenic evolution between the late Eocene and the late Miocene (~35.3 to ~11.0Ma). The balanced cross-section is built on extensive surface and subsurface data and depicts an imbricate fan internally stacked along high-displacement out-of-sequence thrusts. Section restoration yielded 507km of minimum orogenic shortening — at least ~230km more than proposed in previous studies. Our shortening estimate relies on accurate thicknesses of lithostratigraphic units, in most cases thinner than applied before. The average convergence rate between ~35.3 and ~11.0Ma is estimated at 20.8km/My. The forward model, constrained by lower and upper ages of syn-orogenic deposits, traces the advance of the Outer Carpathian accretionary wedge and proves kinematic admissibility of the balanced and restored cross-sections. Progradation rates of the foreland basin depositional sequences, evolving from 9–11km/My between ~41.5 and ~21.1Ma to 22–39km/My between ~21.1 and ~11.0Ma, suggest a two-phase dynamics of the orogenic system. The acceleration of foreland migration at ~21.1Ma likely reflects the onset of northward subduction retreat, linked to the rollback of the European lower plate that gave rise to coeval back-arc extension in the Pannonian Basin. Abstract: A 20-cm thick laminated limestone of Oligocene age from the Outer Carpathians is composed mainly of coccoliths and authigenic calcite. δ13C values unequivocally indicate that the authigenic calcite precipitated as a result of methane oxidation. The δ13C and δ18O values change gradually from the base to the top of the bed from −38.0‰ to −17.6‰ and from −1.1‰ to −5.7‰, respectively. This trend reflects a geochemical gradient which developed in the zone of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) due to the consumption of sulfate by methane. This gradient was related to an inverse relationship between the concentrations of both compounds in the pore waters of the AOM zone. Methane was the source of isotopically light carbon. It was accompanied by heavy oxygen-containing water liberated from decomposition of gas hydrates. The methane-bearing fluids migrated upwards to the base of the sulfate reduction (SR) zone, where methane was oxidized (CH4 +SO4 2− →HCO3 − +HS− +H2O) and the AOM zone developed. The bicarbonate produced in this reaction was significantly depleted in 13C and 16O. In the SR zone organic matter was oxidized by sulfate: 2CH2O+SO4 2− →H2S+2HCO3 −. The bicarbonate released in that reaction was the source of isotopically heavier C and lighter O. The proportion of bicarbonate produced by oxidation of methane to bicarbonate produced by oxidation of organic matter decreased upwards. The resultant isotopic composition of bicarbonate dissolved in the pore waters changed upwards towards higher δ13C and lower δ18O values and has been recorded in the limestone''s isotopic composition.
