Thermal X-ray emission from rotation-powered millisecond pulsars, shaped by gravitational lensing and the beaming of the surface radiation, provides critical insights into neutron star properties. This approach has been the focus of observations with the NICER mission. Using a semi-analytic model to calculate pulse profiles, we investigate the effects of adopting incorrect beaming models on the inferred compactness of neutron stars. We demonstrate that assuming a more centrally peaked beaming pattern when fitting data from a more isotropic emitter leads to an underestimation of compactness in the case of two antipodal polar caps. We present a detailed analysis of this counterintuitive result, offering both qualitative insights and quantitative estimates. If the atmospheric heating in the millisecond pulsars observed with NICER is shallow, the inferred radii for these sources could be significantly overestimated, with important implications for neutron star structure and equation-of-state constraints., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Modeling of X-ray pulse profiles from millisecond pulsars offers a promising method of inferring the mass-to-radius ratios of neutron stars. Recent observations with NICER resulted in measurements of radii for three neutron stars using this technique. In this paper, we explore correlations between model parameters and the degree to which individual parameters can be inferred from pulse profiles, using an analytic model that allows for an efficient and interpretable exploration. We introduce a new set of model parameters that reduce the most prominent correlations and allow for an efficient sampling of posteriors. We then demonstrate that the degree of beaming of radiation emerging from the neutron star surface has a large impact on the uncertainties in the inferred model parameters. Finally, we show that the uncertainties in the model parameters for neutron stars for which the polar cap temperature falls outside of the NICER energy range are significantly degraded., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Increasing the angular resolution of an interferometric array requires placing its elements at large separations. This often leads to sparse coverage and introduces challenges to reconstructing images from interferometric data. We introduce a new interferometric imaging algorithm, KRISP, that is based on kernel methods, is statistically robust, and is agnostic to the underlying image. The algorithm reconstructs the complete Fourier map up to the maximum observed baseline length based entirely on the data without tuning by a user or training on prior images and reproduces images with high fidelity. KRISP works efficiently for many sparse array configurations even in the presence of significant image structure as long as the typical baseline separation is comparable to or less than the correlation length of the Fourier map, which is inversely proportional to the size of the target image., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Horizon-scale imaging with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has provided transformative insights into supermassive black holes but its resolution and scope are limited by ground-based constraints such as the size of the Earth, its relatively slow rotation, and atmospheric delays. Space-based very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) offers the capability for studying a larger and more diverse sample of black holes. We identify a number of nearby supermassive black holes as prime candidates for horizon-scale imaging at millimeter wavelengths, and use source characteristics such as angular size, sky distribution, and variability timescales to shape the design of a space-based array. We identify specific metrics that serve as key predictors of image fidelity and scientific potential, providing a quantitative basis for optimizing mission design parameters. Our analysis demonstrates that the optimal configuration requires two space-based elements in high Earth orbits (HEO) that are not coplanar and are apparently counter-rotating. Our results delineate the key requirements for a space-based VLBI mission, enabling detailed studies of black hole shadows, plasma dynamics, and jet formation, advancing black hole astrophysics beyond the current capabilities of the EHT., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Inhalers spray over 100 million drug particles into the mouth, where a significant portion of the drug may deposit. Understanding how the complex interplay between particle and solid phases influence deposition is crucial for optimising treatments. Existing modelling studies neglect any effect of particle momentum on the fluid (one-way coupling), which may cause poor prediction of forces acting on particles. In this study, we simulate a realistic number of particles (up to 160 million) in a patient-specific geometry. We study the effect of momentum transfer from particles to the fluid (two-way coupling) and particle-particle interactions (four-way coupling) on deposition. We also explore the effect of tracking groups of particles (`parcels') to lower computational cost. Upper airway deposition fraction increased from 0.33 (one-way coupled) to 0.87 with two-way coupling and $10 \mu m$ particle diameter. Four-way coupling lowers upper airway deposition by approximately 10% at $100 \mu g$ dosages. We use parcel modelling to study deposition of $4 - 20 \mu m$ particles, observing significant influence of two-way coupling in each simulation. In this paper, we aim to investigate the properties of an almost $*$-Ricci-Bourguignon soliton (almost $*-$R-B-S for short) on a Kenmotsu manifold (K-M). We start by proving that if a Kenmotsu manifold (K-M) obeys an almost $*-$R-B-S, then the manifold is $\eta$-Einstein. Furthermore, we establish that if a $(\kappa, -2)'$-nullity distribution, where $\kappa<-1$, has an almost $*$-Ricci-Bourguignon soliton (almost $*-$R-B-S), then the manifold is Ricci flat. Moreover, we establish that if a K-M has almost $*$-Ricci-Bourguignon soliton gradient and the vector field $\xi$ preserves the scalar curvature $r$, then the manifold is an Einstein manifold with a constant scalar curvature given by $r=-n(2n-1)$. A new image-reconstruction algorithm, PRIMO, applied to the interferometric data of the M87 black hole collected with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), resulted in an image that reached the native resolution of the telescope array. PRIMO is based on learning a compact set of image building blocks obtained from a large library of high-fidelity, physics-based simulations of black hole images. It uses these building blocks to fill the sparse Fourier coverage of the data that results from the small number of telescopes in the array. In this paper, we show that this approach is readily justified. Since the angular extent of the image of the black hole and of its inner accretion flow is finite, the Fourier space domain is heavily smoothed, with a correlation scale that is at most comparable to the sizes of the data gaps in the coverage of Fourier space with the EHT. Consequently, PRIMO or other machine-learning algorithms can faithfully reconstruct the images without the need to generate information that is unconstrained by the data within the resolution of the array. We also address the completeness of the eigenimages and the compactness of the resulting representation. We show that PRIMO provides a compact set of eigenimages that have sufficient complexity to recreate a broad set of images well beyond those in the training set., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We propose a new large synthetic hand pose estimation dataset, Hi5, and a novel inexpensive method for collecting high-quality synthetic data that requires no human annotation or validation. Leveraging recent advancements in computer graphics, high-fidelity 3D hand models with diverse genders and skin colors, and dynamic environments and camera movements, our data synthesis pipeline allows precise control over data diversity and representation, ensuring robust and fair model training. We generate a dataset with 583,000 images with accurate pose annotation using a single consumer PC that closely represents real-world variability. Pose estimation models trained with Hi5 perform competitively on real-hand benchmarks while surpassing models trained with real data when tested on occlusions and perturbations. Our experiments show promising results for synthetic data as a viable solution for data representation problems in real datasets. Overall, this paper provides a promising new approach to synthetic data creation and annotation that can reduce costs and increase the diversity and quality of data for hand pose estimation.

In the 1960s, the world-renowned social psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted experiments that showed that not only do there exist ``short chains'' of acquaintances between any two arbitrary people, but that these arbitrary strangers are able to find these short chains. This phenomenon, known as the \emph{small-world phenomenon}, is explained in part by any model that has a low diameter, such as the Barab\'asi and Albert's \emph{preferential attachment} model, but these models do not display the same efficient routing that Milgram's experiments showed. In the year 2000, Kleinberg proposed a model with an efficient $\mathcal{O}(\log^2{n})$ greedy routing algorithm. In 2004, Martel and Nguyen showed that Kleinberg's analysis was tight, while also showing that Kleinberg's model had an expected diameter of only $\Theta(\log{n})$ -- a much smaller value than the greedy routing algorithm's path lengths. In 2022, Goodrich and Ozel proposed the \emph{neighborhood preferential attachment} model (NPA), combining elements from Barab\'asi and Albert's model with Kleinberg's model, and experimentally showed that the resulting model outperformed Kleinberg's greedy routing performance on U.S. road networks. While they displayed impressive empirical results, they did not provide any theoretical analysis of their model. In this paper, we first provide a theoretical analysis of a generalization of Kleinberg's original model and show that it can achieve expected $\mathcal{O}(\log{n})$ routing, a much better result than Kleinberg's model. We then propose a new model, \emph{windowed NPA}, that is similar to the neighborhood preferential attachment model but has provable theoretical guarantees w.h.p. Gas-particle flows are commonly simulated through two-fluid model at industrial-scale. However, these simulations need very fine grid to have accurate flow predictions, which is prohibitively demanding in terms of computational resources. To circumvent this problem, the filtered two-fluid model has been developed, where large-scale flow field is numerically resolved and small-scale fluctuations are accounted for through subgrid-scale modeling. In this study, we have performed fine-grid two-fluid simulations of dilute gas-particle flows in periodic domains and applied explicit filtering to generate datasets. Then, these datasets have been used to develop artificial neural network (ANN) models for closures such as the filtered drag force and solid phase stress for the filtered two-fluid model. The set of input variables for the subgrid drag force ANN model that has been found previously to work well for dense flow regimes is found to work as well for the dilute regime. In addition, we present a Galilean invariant tensor basis neural network (TBNN) model for the filtered solid phase stress which can capture nicely the anisotropic nature of the solid phase stress arising from subgrid-scale velocity fluctuations. Finally, the predictions provided by this new TBNN model are compared with those obtained from a simple eddy-viscosity ANN model.

Low density plasmas are characterized by a large scale separation between the gyromotion of particles around local magnetic fields and the macroscopic scales of the system, often making global kinetic simulations computationally intractable. The guiding center formalism has been proposed as a powerful tool to bridge the gap between these scales. Despite its usefulness, the guiding center approach has been formulated successfully only in flat spacetimes, limiting its applicability in astrophysical settings. Here, we present a new covariant formalism that leads to kinetic equations in the guiding center limit that are valid in arbitrary spacetimes. Through a variety of experiments, we demonstrate that our equations capture all known gyro-center drifts while overcoming one severe limitation imposed on numerical algorithms by the fast timescales of the particle gyromotion. This formalism will enable explorations of a variety of global plasma kinetic phenomena in the curved spacetimes around black holes and neutron stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed in 2017 the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ($\lambda$=1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT datasets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars - which typically exhibit steep emission spectra - are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic Center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most-sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the Fast-Folding-Algorithm and single pulse search targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission; using the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction ($\lesssim$2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables. In this demo paper, we introduce SAPIEN, a platform for high-fidelity virtual agents driven by large language models that can hold open domain conversations with users in 13 different languages, and display emotions through facial expressions and voice. The platform allows users to customize their virtual agent's personality, background, and conversation premise, thus providing a rich, immersive interaction experience. Furthermore, after the virtual meeting, the user can choose to get the conversation analyzed and receive actionable feedback on their communication skills. This paper illustrates an overview of the platform and discusses the various application domains of this technology, ranging from entertainment to mental health, communication training, language learning, education, healthcare, and beyond. Additionally, we consider the ethical implications of such realistic virtual agent representations and the potential challenges in ensuring responsible use.

We will classify physically admissible manifold structures by the use of Waldhausen categories. These categories give rise to algebraic K-Theory. Moreover, we will show that a universal K-spectrum is necessary for a physical manifold being admissible. Application to the generalized structure of D-branes are also provided. This might give novel insights in how the manifold structure in String and M-Theory looks like.

In the collisionless plasmas of radiatively inefficient accretion flows, heating and acceleration of ions and electrons is not well understood. Recent studies in the gyrokinetic limit revealed the importance of incorporating both the compressive and Alfvenic cascades when calculating the partition of dissipated energy between the plasma species. In this paper, we use a covariant analytic model of the accretion flow to explore the impact of compressive and Alfvenic heating, Coulomb collisions, compressional heating, and radiative cooling on the radial temperature profiles of ions and electrons. We show that, independent of the partition of heat between the plasma species, even a small fraction of turbulent energy dissipated to the electrons makes their temperature scale with a virial profile and the ion-to-electron temperature ratio smaller than in the case of pure Coulomb heating. In contrast, the presence of compressive cascades makes this ratio larger because compressive turbulent energy is channeled primarily into the ions. We calculate the ion-to-electron temperature in the inner accretion flow for a broad range of plasma properties, mass accretion rates, and black hole spins and show that it ranges between $5 \lesssim T_i/T_e \lesssim 40$. We provide a physically motivated expression for this ratio that can be used to calculate observables from simulations of black hole accretion flows for a wide range of conditions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a new reconstruction of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) image of the M87 black hole from the 2017 data set. We use PRIMO, a novel dictionary-learning based algorithm that uses high-fidelity simulations of accreting black holes as a training set. By learning the correlations between the different regions of the space of interferometric data, this approach allows us to recover high-fidelity images even in the presence of sparse coverage and reach the nominal resolution of the EHT array. The black hole image comprises a thin bright ring with a diameter of $41.5\pm0.6\,\mu$as and a fractional width that is at least a factor of two smaller than previously reported. This improvement has important implications for measuring the mass of the central black hole in M87 based on the EHT images., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

For the one billion sufferers of respiratory disease, managing their disease with inhalers crucially influences their quality of life. Generic treatment plans could be improved with the aid of computational models that account for patient-specific features such as breathing pattern, lung pathology and morphology. Therefore, we aim to develop and validate an automated computational framework for patient-specific deposition modelling. To that end, an image processing approach is proposed that could produce 3D patient respiratory geometries from 2D chest X-rays and 3D CT images. We evaluated the airway and lung morphology produced by our image processing framework, and assessed deposition compared to in vivo data. The 2D-to-3D image processing reproduces airway diameter to 9% median error compared to ground truth segmentations, but is sensitive to outliers of up to 33% due to lung outline noise. Predicted regional deposition gave 5% median error compared to in vivo measurements. The proposed framework is capable of providing patient-specific deposition measurements for varying treatments, to determine which treatment would best satisfy the needs imposed by each patient (such as disease and lung/airway morphology). pyssam is a Python library for creating statistical shape and appearance models (SSAMs) for biological (and other) shapes such as bones, lungs or other organs. A point cloud best describing the anatomical 'landmarks' of the organ are required from each sample in a small population as an input. Additional information such as landmark gray-value can be included to incorporate joint correlations of shape and 'appearance' into the model. Our library performs alignment and scaling of the input data and creates a SSAM based on covariance across the population. The output SSAM can be used to parameterise and quantify shape change across a population. pyssam is a small and low dependency codebase with examples included as Jupyter notebooks for several common SSAM computations.
