This article investigates the factors influencing food product purchases by young Polish consumers aged 18–25 – a group important for the development of the economy. In the process of deciding to purchase specific food products, consumers pay attention to various economic and non-economic factors, including marketing. We carried out survey in October/November 2020 using the CAWI method (Google Forms) to test the importance of 17 factors on young Polish consumers’ food purchases, applying factor analysis and cluster analysis to the resulting data. The results reveal that price and product expiration date are young Polish consumers’ primary concerns when purchasing food products. The study also found that environmental sustainability attributes, although less critical than price or product quality, are increasingly influencing young Polish consumers' purchasing decisions.

Background: South Asians are defined as those indigenous to the Indian subcontinent - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. This ethnic group is a unique population with increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome even at a lower body mass index (BMI). Should they also have increased BMI, the risk for development of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular complications are further magnified. Strong cultural perceptions about ideal body weight, lack of awareness about the race and ethnicity-specific risks, and knowledge gaps regarding different dietary patterns among the healthcare providers confound further the metabolic issues pertinent to South Asians living in North America. Methods: In this case study of a South Asian patient, we present asynchronous co-management of obesity by an obesity specialist and the primary care provider in a university-based clinic. Results: Intense lifestyle interventions including a custom-tailored Indian vegetarian meal plan and weekly injectable Semaglutide was offered to the patient as treatment plan. The patient lost 59 pounds, and BMI changed from 34.1 kg/m2 to 23.5 kg/m2. Conclusion: Intensive lifestyle interventions with custom-tailored dietary changes, regular physical activity and behavior modifications combined with appropriate pharmacotherapy can be very successful in the management of obesity among South Asians living in North America.

This work reports on the synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) obtained via the polyaddition of diamines: dimer fatty acid-derived diamine (DFA diamine) or polyether diamine (PPO diamine) with five-membered tri(cyclic carbonate) by a pre-polymerization method. The obtained NIPUs were further chemically modified by polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) – glycidylisobutyl POSS (1epPOSS). The resulting reinforced composites, containing 5, 10 or 15 wt% 1epPOSS, were characterized in terms of their structure (FTIR, NMR, XRD), microstructure (SEM-EDS) and thermo-mechanical properties (DMA). FTIR confirmed the formation of polyurethanes, and NMR proved the chemical incorporation of 1epPOSS. XRD and SEM-EDS showed a uniform distribution of 1epPOSS in the matrix for low 1epPOSS concentration, with some agglomeration effects depending on the concentration of 1epPOSS. DMA indicated mechanical reinforcement of NIPUs based on DFA diamine. For NIPUs synthesized with PPO diamine, the composite with the highest 1epPOSS loading (15 wt%) exhibited superior mechanical properties in comparison to the pristine matrix, confirmed by both DMA and static stretching test.

W artykule przedstawiam opisywany przez Michela Foucaulta problem zbrodni pozbawionej motywu na przykładzie dwóch przypadków z pierwszej połowy XIX wieku — Pierre’a Rivière’a oraz Henrietty Cornier. Przypadki te analizuję pod kątem strategii władzy, jakie przyjęła psychiatria oraz system prawny w zetknięciu z Innym, który popełnił niewytłumaczalną zbrodnię, a którego nie można było przypisać do żadnej z uznanych przez naukę odmian szaleństwa. Przedstawiam również impas pomiędzy dyskursem medycznym i prawnym jako przykład problematyzacji, czyli metody używanej przez Foucaulta w ostatnich latach jego pracy naukowej. Jedną z konsekwencji starań psychiatrii o rozwiązanie problemu zbrodni bez motywu było wytworzenie instynktów i popędów jako obiektów poznania naukowego, co pokazuje, że obiekty takie powstawać mogą na styku różnych relacji władzy, a nawet mogą zostać wytworzone bezpośrednio jako instrumenty do realizacji celów władzy.

Visual analysis has applications in diverse fields, including urban planning and environmental management. This study explores viewshed generation using two distinct datasets: Digital Surface Model (DSM) and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) point cloud data. We assess the differences in viewsheds derived from these sources, evaluating their respective strengths and weaknesses. The DSM accurately captures terrain features and elevation changes, offering a comprehensive view of the land surface. Conversely, LiDAR point cloud data delivers detailed three-dimensional information, enabling precise mapping of terrain features and object detection. Our comparative analysis based on six selected locations with varied topographical arrangements considers factors such as visual acuity and computational efficiency. Additionally, we discuss the application of DSM and LiDAR point cloud data in view analysis, emphasizing their value in line-of-sight assessments and field operations. The results indicate greater precision of viewsheds created based on LiDAR point clouds. The analysis reveals that the greater precision in comparing differences between DSM and point LiDAR data ranges from 1.42% to 5.94%, while the results subtraction falls between 1.05% and 3.89% for the conditions analyzed, indicating a high degree of accuracy in the method. However, this process demands significant computational resources. It is best applied in limited areas, particularly in urban environments where such data is crucial for supporting research decisions.

Since more and more people have begun to use social networking sites (SNSs), research on the use of SNSs is flourishing. This study examines Instagram use and the psychological well-being of the users. It was conducted based on two samples (n.sub.1 = 143 and n.sub.2 = 320) examining the relationship between Instagram use, social capital, and satisfaction with life using online questionnaires. Social capital was divided into bonding and bridging social capital and Instagram use was distinguished depending on an active and passive mode, respectively. Instagram use was measured by a behavioral report - the Instagram Activity Questionnaire (IAQ) - which was developed in accordance with the Facebook-Activity Questionnaire (FAQ; cf., Ozimek & Bierhoff, 2016). The results indicated consistently in both samples the occurrence of positive associations between mode of Instagram use and social capital variables. Furthermore, only bonding social capital - not bridging social capital - was positively correlated to satisfaction with life. A path model showed that the negative association of active Instagram use and satisfaction with life was positively mediated by bonding social capital. These results are discussed based on social capital theory. Background COVID-19 disease in kidney transplant (KT) recipients is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization rates. Unfortunately, KT recipients also have a reduced response to SARS-CoV-2 immunization. The primary aim of this study was to assess immunologic response to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines in pediatric kidney transplant recipients 12-18 years of age. Secondary aims were to assess response rates following a third immunization and determine factors that influence immunization response. Methods Pediatric KT recipients in a single tertiary center received SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination as per local protocol. SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin (IgG) was measured following second and/or third vaccination. Demographics including patient factors (age, gender, and underlying disease), transplant factors (time and type of transplant), and immunosuppression (induction, maintenance, and immunomodulatory therapies such as IVIG) were collected from the medical records. Results Of 20 participants, 10 (50%) responded following a two-dose vaccine schedule, which increased to 15 (75%) after three doses. Maintenance immunosuppression affected immunologic response, with azathioprine demonstrating a higher rate of response to vaccine compared to mycophenolate (100% vs. 38%, p = 0.04). Increasing prednisolone dose had a negative impact on immunologic response (0.01 mg/kg/day increase: OR 1.60 95% CI 1.01 to 2.57). Tacrolimus dose and trough levels, age, time post-transplant, underlying disease, and other immunosuppression did not impact immunologic response. Conclusions Pediatric KT recipients had similar response rates following SARS-CoV-2 immunization as adult KT recipients. Immunologic response improved following a third immunization. Choice of antimetabolite and prednisolone dosing influenced the rate of response. Aim/purpose – The paper aims to present a preliminary consumer typology based on the declared nutritional behaviors and selected lifestyle elements of Polish and Slovak consumers.

The aim of this article is to look at “the political” as an explanatory category. “The political” is a concept naming a feature of political phenomena, which means that it belongs to the foundations of political sciences. It has a profound impact on the development and structure of knowledge of political phenomena. Moreover, it is also a significant research object among political scientists. Especially in recent years, the phenomenon and concept have been reworked in various dimensions, indicating the distinctiveness of the problem. This makes it possible to ask the question about the status of “the political” in relation to the explanatory function of political sciences. A working axis that would serve to explicate “the political” in Polish political science research, while at the same time systematising its complexity, comprises two levels: a subjective level and an objective level. The former should be understood as being strongly related to the researcher and their decisions. The latter is related to the object of cognition, the matter under examination.

The concern for the condition of the natural environment requires taking a new approach towards consumption and meeting consumer needs (Bocking 2009). Despite many initiatives related to the paradigm of sustainable development and the concept of sustainable consumption, the situation is still far from a general departure from mass consumption and consumerism. The article aims to try to synthetically organise the views of other authors on the challenges of greening consumption, both for enterprises and consumers in the context of social responsibility. Competences play an important role in this process. The greening of consumption has not yet been widely propagated in societies, including also Polish society. One of the crucial elements of greening consumption is the purchase of ecological/organic food products. To learn about the behaviour of Poles towards the issue discussed in this article, the authors conducted a study on a representative sample of Poles (N = 1,000) during Nov. 15–27, 2021, using the Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) technique (which is an online surveying technique that fits into the quantitative methodology of market and opinion research) and online panels as part of the omnibus study. The survey shows that only 7.1% of the respondents have never purchased ecological/organic food products. Among buyers, 21.8% do it rarely/sporadically, 40.1% occasionally/sometimes, 20.2% often/try to choose ecological products when shopping and 10.8% do it very often or always. Among the respondents, 55.3% declared that ecological/organic products are expensive but still worth the price due to the health benefits they bring. Noticing the advantages of these products, 63.7% of respondents would like to buy more of them. In view of the results obtained, it can be said that it is necessary to disseminate the main greening consumption ideas that are apparent from this study, and this can be done through education, building consumer competences or visualising the effects of the continuation of current consumption habits. The problem of protecting the natural environment, discussed in numerous documents issued by governments and international organisations and in scientific publications, cannot remain unnoticed. Greening consumption is a challenge for companies whose production should be rational in using non-renewable natural resources, reducing or eliminating toxic waste, using recyclable packaging and introducing ‘clean production’ principles aimed at obtaining consumer products using more cost-effective and healthier methods. It is also a challenge for consumers, who should replace perishable goods with products with a longer life cycle, consume goods and services more sparingly and cease to accept planned obsolescence of products or unethical behaviour of enterprises towards their employees.

The study aimed to analyse selected aspects of innovative activities of enterprises in Poland in 2016–2020. The article is based on literature studies, using a query of scientific publications and statistical analyses of data published by Statistics Poland and the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland (PORP) for 2016–2020. Findings show that in 2016–2020 the number of innovative industrial and service enterprises that primarily implemented innovations in business processes was increasing. The innovations included, in particular, processes of manufacturing products in industrial enterprises, as well as external and internal communication in service enterprises. Although the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic did not affect the activities of the majority of surveyed companies significantly, the changes in the functioning of those impacted by COVID-19 caused a more frequent implementation of innovations in business processes than in the product processes. Innovative activities conducted in enterprises were financed mainly from own funds, including internal outlays for innovative activities of enterprises and funds obtained from government and local government institutions, most often used by the entrepreneurs to purchase fixed assets. The smallest share of outlays was allocated to the protection of intellectual property in enterprises, which is undoubtedly one of the most often underestimated areas determining effective protection of innovations in enterprises.

Subject and aim of the study: The aim of the article was to present selected tangible and intangible elements of Kashubian culture and to present the results of a survey aimed at finding out tourists’ opinions on the influence of cultural heritage on the perception of the Kashubian region.

On the basis of recent findings in the context of the Social Online Self-Regulation Theory it is assumed that intensity of social Facebook use (i.e., a higher intensity and more time spend on Facebook focusing on social activities) serves the purpose of self-regulation. A priming of unfulfilled goals was used to increase participants' intensity of social Facebook use in order to regulate the negative emotions and the self-discrepancy which should be caused by the priming. High social comparison orientation as well as difficulties in emotion regulation were assumed to moderate that effect. 355 people took part in an online survey. As expected, difficulties in emotion regulation as well as social comparison orientation were positively correlated with intensity of social Facebook use. However, the priming effect was moderated by difficulties in emotion regulation. Our research follows propositions derived from self-regulation theory and is, therefore, integrated into a broader theoretical approach focusing on the goal-setting of the self. PurposeOncofertility is an emerging discipline which aims to preserve fertility of young cancer patients. As fertility preservation services have become increasingly available to cancer patients in many countries around the globe, it is crucial to establish a foundation of collaborative reporting to continuously monitor and assess oncofertility practices. This survey study investigates the current global landscape of official national oncofertility registries, a vital tool which allows for surveillance of the field.MethodsAn online pilot survey was conducted to give the opportunity to report official national oncofertility registries available in 2022. Survey questions covered the availability of official national registries for oncofertility as well as the official national registries for cancer and assisted reproductive technologies. Participation in the survey was voluntary, anonymous and for free.ResultsAccording to our online pilot survey, responses were collected from 20 countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Kenya, Philippines, Romania, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, UK, USA & Uruguay. Only 3 out of the 20 surveyed countries have well-established official national oncofertility registries; and include Australia, Germany & Japan. The Australian official national oncofertility registry is part of Australasian Oncofertility Registry that also includes New Zealand. The German official national oncofertility registry is part of FertiPROTEKT Network Registry for German speaking countries that also includes Austria & Switzerland. The Japanese official national oncofertility registry includes Japan only and called Japan Oncofertility Registry (JOFR). A supplementary internet search confirmed the aforementioned results. Therefore, the final list of countries around the globe that have official national oncofertility registries includes Australia, Austria, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, and Switzerland. Some other countries such as the USA and Denmark are on their way to establish official national registries for oncofertility care.ConclusionAlthough oncofertility services are expanding globally, very few countries have well-established official national oncofertility registries. By reviewing such a global landscape, we highlight the urgent need for having a well-established official national oncofertility registry in each country to monitor oncofertility services in a way that best serves patients.

Abstract Background The insertion of a ureteral access sheath (UAS) is a frequent procedure during flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) to facilitate kidney stone treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of 12/14 French (F) UAS on fURS outcomes. Methods We performed a retrospective monocentric analysis of fURS procedures conducted at the Department of Urology (University Hospital Schleswig–Holstein, Lübeck, Germany) for kidney stone treatment via lithotripsy or basket stone retrieval between September 2013 and June 2017. Uni- and multivariate analyses were done with the help of RStudio (Version 1.0.136) software. Results In total, 283 consecutive fURS were analyzed. UAS was applied in 98 cases (34.63%). The insertion of UAS was preferred in cases with multiple kidney stones and larger median maximal stone diameter (p 0.05). Conclusions 12/14F UAS does not seem to improve overall outcomes in fURS for kidney stones. In patients with multiple kidney stones it may be associated with elevated operation time without a clear benefit in terms of improved stone-free status or reduced perioperative complication rate. Further prospective randomized studies to specify the indications for UAS usage are urgently needed.

Student Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) expectations in higher education are ubiquitous. Colleges are tasked with creating policies that ensure they can effectively support students using their own devices. However, depending on the students an institution serves, its BYOD policy may require unique inclusions. Many of today's continuing education students are nontraditional, characterized by one or more criteria including commuting, working, attending part-time, being first-generation, and/or an adult learner. These traits can present academic challenges that could impede development of successful BYOD policies, especially at colleges that primarily serve nontraditional students (i.e., nontraditional colleges). To identify whether specific additions, with respect to nontraditional colleges and students, should be included in relevant BYOD policies, this study analyzed student experiences with BYOD at an institution with an entirely nontraditional student population. Student challenges with BYOD were further defined based on age and first-generation status. The study used a mixed methods approach with data gathered from the same survey instrument. Although results revealed most students had positive experiences using their devices, concerns were shared regarding affordability and compatibility. Frustrations related to infrastructure limitations and accessibility of support were also expressed. Hypothesis tests revealed a significantly smaller proportion of adult learners found their device to be sufficient for learning when compared to traditionally aged learners (p < 0.05). The data also reflected a greater lack of digital literacy among adult learners. These findings lead to several important considerations for nontraditional colleges implementing BYOD policies and supporting students using their own devices for learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work discusses the synthesis and properties of nonisocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional polyurethanes. NIPUs are made without the use of toxic isocyanates, reducing the environmental impact and safety concerns associated with their production. However, their synthesis reactions often require longer time and more energy to be completed. The sustainability of NIPUs is considered from various angles; the main methods for the synthesis of NIPUs, including rearrangement reactions, transurethanization, and ring-opening polymerization of cyclic carbonates with amines, are examined. Another part focuses on renewable sources, such as vegetable oils, terpenes, tannins, lignins, sugars, and others. The synthesis of waterborne and solvent-free NIPUs is also discussed, as it further reduces the environmental impact by minimizing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and avoiding the use of harmful solvents. The challenges faced by NIPUs, such as lower molecular weight and higher dispersity compared to traditional polyurethanes, which can affect mechanical properties, were also addressed. Improving the performance of NIPUs to make them more competitive compared to conventional polyurethanes remains a key task in future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the use of microwave irradiation in the synthesis of bis(cyclo carbonate) compounds (BCCs) in bulk (without solvent) from carbon dioxide capture using an epoxidized compound—a commercial epoxy resin—and compares this process to the conventional method. CO2 cycloaddition to epoxides is an ecological and efficient method for the formation of bis(cyclic carbonates). Moreover, the introduction of gas into the reaction mixture was carried out at atmospheric pressure with a controlled flow rate, which is advantageous from an economic point of view. Progressive structural changes and the presence of characteristic chemical groups were monitored using attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform. The obtained crude products were purified to obtain three fractions, which were subjected to detailed structural analysis using FT-IR and 13CNMR. The formation of the main product with two cyclic carbonates was confirmed. The presence of monomers, dimers and trimers in individual fractions as well as their thermal stability were determined, and the molecular masses in individual fractions were determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC).
