This study aims to investigate the phenomenon of hope in adolescents diagnosed with cancer and examine adolescents' lived experiences of hope. The study was conducted between November 2022 and March 2023. The study used a phenomenological-visual qualitative research design with 20 adolescents in the pediatric oncology ward. The purposive sampling method was used in the study. Data were collected using "Descriptive Characteristic Form," "Semi-structured Interview Form," "Drawing Technique," and "Mutual Storytelling Technique". The adolescents were instructed, "Let us draw our hopes," and asked to draw pictures. Each adolescent was interviewed about the drawings and asked four semistructured questions. Audio recordings of the interviews were made and transcribed. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used in the analysis of the data. Two main themes and four subthemes were identified in the study. Metaphorical and conceptual context was included in the theme of symbolizing and linking hope. Two subthemes, facilitators and barriers, were identified in the main theme of rooting hope. The study sheds light on hope experiences in adolescents receiving cancer treatment and guides healthcare professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trials. The study aimed to investigate the effect of virtual reality interventions on relieving pain and anxiety in children and adolescents receiving cancer treatment. A search that involved Cochrane Library (comprising Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL)), PubMed, ProQuest, MEDLINE, Web of Sciences, Science Direct, and Scopus electronic databases covering the records from January 1, 2000 up to May, 2023 was conducted to determine randomized controlled trials that could be included in our study. The results of the search were limited to "anxiety and pain, adolescents, children, virtual reality, cancer." Of the 160 articles that were reached during the search, seven were found eligible based on inclusion criteria. Hedges' g effect size was calculated for each article. Random effects model was used to test effect sizes and moderator variables. The registration number of this meta-analysis on PROSPERO is CRD42022304737. The outcomes were pain and anxiety. Compared with standard care, virtual reality had a medium and significant effect on anxiety (g = 0.60, 95% CI: [− 1.05 − 0.15]) and pain (g = − 0.667, 95% CI: [− 1.08− -0.24]). In addition, age has been identified as an important moderator in the use of virtual reality in pain management. This meta-analysis shows that virtual reality applications are effective interventions for reducing pain and anxiety in the field of pediatric oncology. However, it is necessary to carry out randomized controlled trials that have large samples for evidence-based virtual reality applications in pediatric oncology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to explore the effects of a mHealth-based relaxation program on anxiety and stress coping levels in mothers of children with cancer. This randomized controlled, single-blind, parallel-group trial was conducted in the pediatric hematology-oncology unit of a university hospital. The study was completed by 50 mothers (intervention group: n = 25; control group: n = 25). The mothers in the intervention group participated in a mHealth-based relaxation program for eight weeks (including progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and the four-leaf clover of mindfulness). Videos of the relaxation program were sent to mothers' WhatsApp accounts. The mothers in the control group received routine care. The State-Trait Anxiety and Stress Coping Scales were administered during the first and eighth weeks. The registration number of this study on ClinicalTrials.gov is NCT05807295. Mothers who participated in the relaxation program had lower anxiety levels and higher stress-coping scores than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Progressive muscle relaxation exercises, guided imagery, and cognitive-based therapeutic approaches were effective in reducing mothers' anxiety and stress coping. Pediatric oncology nurses can apply mHealth-based relaxation programs to support caregivers, particularly mothers. In this way, ensuring the continuity and integrity of care is easy. ● Mothers of children receiving treatment for cancer experience anxiety and stress. ● An eight-week relaxation program using video instructions and follow-up telephones affects anxiety and coping with stress. ● The mHealth relaxation program combining progressive muscle relaxation and cognitive strategies is promising. Background: Cancer can have various psychosocial effects on children and young adults. Technology‐based psychosocial interventions are increasingly popular in paediatric oncology for psychosocial health. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of technology‐based psychosocial interventions applied to children, adolescent and young adults undergoing cancer treatment. Methods: Eight electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library (including Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials [CENTRAL]), CINAHL Plus with Full Text, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, ProQuest, Science Direct and Scopus were searched to identify eligible randomised controlled trials from 1 January 2010 up to 9 April 2021. Search results were limited to 'children, adolescent and young adults' 6–24 years undergoing cancer treatment. Randomised controlled studies in which technology‐based psychosocial interventions were applied were examined. Of 4,927 articles, 12 articles met the inclusion criteria. Hedges' g effect size was computed for each study. Effect sizes and moderator variables were tested using random‐effects models. This study is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42020177787. Results: The outcomes were anger, anxiety, coping, depression, distress, quality of life and resilience. Compared with standard care, technology‐based psychosocial interventions had a large effect and significantly on anger (g = −1.327, 95% CI: [−2.43, 0.22], anxiety (g = −0.89, 95%CI: [−1.34, −0.18], and depression (g = −1.05, 95% CI: [−1.65,−0.46]. Also, it was found that the duration of interventions had a significant moderator and effect size of the distress and resilience outcomes increased as the duration increased. Conclusion: This meta‐analysis demonstrated that technology‐based psychosocial interventions served as an effective intervention as it appears to have implications reducing anger, anxiety and depression in paediatric oncology. Nevertheless, randomised controlled studies with larger samples still needed to establish evidence‐based psycho‐oncological interventions for paediatric oncology. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of treatment of a child with glutaric aciduria type-1 diagnosis on the health-related quality of life of a child and his family via in-depth interviews. Methods: The study was conducted in qualitative research design in the pediatric metabolism department of a university hospital in Germany. The inclusion criteria of the study were as follows: a family 1) with a child followed up with glutaric aciduria type-1 and who was exposed to a (tryptophan and) lysine restricted-diet, 2) with other healthy siblings aged between 10 and 25 years, and 3) who agree to participate in the study. The study was carried out in the framework of a biopsychosocial-spiritual model with a child (n=4) who was followed up with glutaric aciduria type-1 and his family. A total of 10 interviews were conducted. The interview records were transcribed and analyzed. Results: In the study, 4 main domain and 11 themes were determined according to the biopsychosocial-spiritual model. The physical effects of the disease, the positive effects of treatment, and limitations were the themes in the biological domain. The psychological domain included themes named as psychological reactions to the disease, adaptation to the treatment process, coping strategies, and future concerns. The domain of social effects explained themes such as family and environment communication-interaction. In the spiritual domain included the meaning and objective of life and belief-values. Conclusion: Living with glutaric aciduria type-1 disease and treatment received was found to have multiple effects on the quality of life of children and their families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
