This paper surveys the linguistic diversity in psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic research by examining the languages under investigation in major international conferences from 2012 to 2023. The results showed that these studies are highly skewed towards English in particular and Indo-European languages in general. However, the overall number of languages, as well as the number and proportion of Indo-European (other than English) and non-Indo-European languages increased over time, indicating that language processing research is becoming more and more diversified. This typological bias was also found in the inspection of specific linguistic phenomena: (a) morphosyntactic alignment, richness of case morphology, canonical word order, and (b) temporal concepts. The analyses of typological bias at the general and specific levels indicate that there are gaps in various topics, and these can be filled by including more non-Indo-European languages in the investigation process. In addition, a sociolinguistic bias in language processing research emerges as the languages investigated are more often ‘Western’ languages with more than one million speakers and a shared written form. These results reflect the numerous challenges encountered when conducting experiments on less familiar languages, such as the geographic difficulty finding participants speaking these languages, the need of institutional support, as well as the difficulties in setting up collaborations with native speakers, among others.

BACKGROUND: The rotational activation created by spiral waves may be a mechanism for atrial fibrillation (AF), yet it is unclear how activation patterns obtained from endocardial baskets are influenced by the 3D geometric curvature of the atrium or unfolding into 2D maps. We develop algorithms that can visualize spiral waves and their tip locations on curved atrial geometries. We use these algorithms to quantify differences in AF maps and spiral tip locations between 3D basket reconstructions, projection onto 3D anatomical shells and unfolded 2D surfaces. METHODS: We tested our algorithms in N = 20 patients in whom AF was recorded from 64-pole baskets (Abbott, CA). Phase maps were generated by non-proprietary software to identify the tips of spiral waves, indicated by phase singularities. The number and density of spiral tips were compared in patient-specific 3D shells constructed from the basket, as well as 3D maps from clinical electroanatomic mapping systems and 2D maps. RESULTS: Patients (59.4±12.7 yrs, 60% M) showed 1.7±0.8 phase singularities/patient, in whom ablation terminated AF in 11/20 patients (55%). There was no difference in the location of phase singularities, between 3D curved surfaces and 2D unfolded surfaces, with a median correlation coefficient between phase singularity density maps of 0.985 (0.978-0.990). No significant impact was noted by phase singularities location in more curved regions or relative to the basket location (p>0.1). CONCLUSIONS: AF maps and phase singularities mapped by endocardial baskets are qualitatively and quantitatively similar whether calculated by 3D phase maps on patient-specific curved atrial geometries or in 2D. Phase maps on patient-specific geometries may be easier to interpret relative to critical structures for ablation planning.

BackgroundLichens, encompassing 20,000 known species, are symbioses between specialized fungi (mycobionts), mostly ascomycetes, and unicellular green algae or cyanobacteria (photobionts). Here we describe the first parallel genomic analysis of the mycobiont Cladonia grayi and of its green algal photobiont Asterochloris glomerata. We focus on genes/predicted proteins of potential symbiotic significance, sought by surveying proteins differentially activated during early stages of mycobiont and photobiont interaction in coculture, expanded or contracted protein families, and proteins with differential rates of evolution.ResultsA) In coculture, the fungus upregulated small secreted proteins, membrane transport proteins, signal transduction components, extracellular hydrolases and, notably, a ribitol transporter and an ammonium transporter, and the alga activated DNA metabolism, signal transduction, and expression of flagellar components. B) Expanded fungal protein families include heterokaryon incompatibility proteins, polyketide synthases, and a unique set of G-protein α subunit paralogs. Expanded algal protein families include carbohydrate active enzymes and a specific subclass of cytoplasmic carbonic anhydrases. The alga also appears to have acquired by horizontal gene transfer from prokaryotes novel archaeal ATPases and Desiccation-Related Proteins. Expanded in both symbionts are signal transduction components, ankyrin domain proteins and transcription factors involved in chromatin remodeling and stress responses. The fungal transportome is contracted, as are algal nitrate assimilation genes. C) In the mycobiont, slow-evolving proteins were enriched for components involved in protein translation, translocation and sorting.ConclusionsThe surveyed genes affect stress resistance, signaling, genome reprogramming, nutritional and structural interactions. The alga carries many genes likely transferred horizontally through viruses, yet we found no evidence of inter-symbiont gene transfer. The presence in the photobiont of meiosis-specific genes supports the notion that sexual reproduction occurs in Asterochloris while they are free-living, a phenomenon with implications for the adaptability of lichens and the persistent autonomy of the symbionts. The diversity of the genes affecting the symbiosis suggests that lichens evolved by accretion of many scattered regulatory and structural changes rather than through introduction of a few key innovations. This predicts that paths to lichenization were variable in different phyla, which is consistent with the emerging consensus that ascolichens could have had a few independent origins.

Percutaneous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been developed thanks to the progress in the field of cannulation, but still justifies the presence of an on-site cardiac resuscitation department. Corsica is a French island without an on-site cardiac surgery department. To evaluate the percutaneous ECMO programme in Corsica. All patients who received ECMO at the Bastia Hospital Centre between 01 January 2016 and 30 April 2022 were included. ECMO was implanted in 39 patients. The mean age was 52.7 years, with male predominance (84.6%). The majority of veno-arterial ECMOs were placed in the coronary angiography laboratory, whereas venovenous ECMOs were preferentially placed in the medical intensive care unit. Twenty patients (51.3%) were medically transferred to other referral centres after canulation. Percutaneous vascular cannulation was performed with ultrasound guidance in all cases (100%), and was successfully performed without immediate complications in all patients except two (who presented an immediate complication during cannulation), which is similar to large trials, despite the absence of on-site cardiac surgery. The use of ultrasound guidance (and sometimes fluoroscopy guidance) during cannulation and the experience of the medical team facilitated control over correct positioning of the cannulas and decreased implantation failure, without the need for a surgical approach. Percutaneous ECMO by trained interventional cardiologists without a surgical approach appears to be safe. Widespread use of percutaneous cannulation without cardiac surgery would increase survival for some patients who are far from these centres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thirty-two 14-month old steers died during a period of four days (19–23 June 2017) after drinking from Junipers Reservoir (southeastern Oregon, USA) during a cyanobacterial bloom. Clinical and histopathological findings were consistent with acute liver disease, and microcystin-LR was present at 3000 μg/L in a reservoir water sample and at 7100 μg/L in the rumen contents of one of the mortalities. Serum biochemistry and histological examination indicated severe liver damage consistent with microcystin toxicosis. Microscopic observation of reservoir water samples, limited to frozen or poorly stored and partially degraded samples, indicated the presence of abundant Anabaena/Dolichospermum, but the presence of other toxic cyanobacteria such as Microcystis could not be excluded. Metagenomic analysis showed the presence in these samples of a single cyanobacterium whose cpcBA, rpoB and rbcL genes indicated membership in the Anabaena/Dolichospermum genus. The sequence of a complete mcy gene cluster with homology to previously identified Anabaena mcy genes was recovered. These results emphasize the capacity for Anabaena/Dolichospermum blooms to produce lethal levels of microcystin, posing a danger to public health and livestock. Further, our findings indicate that such occurrences can occur outside the far-northern latitudes in which microcystin-producing Anabaena have typically been found. Keywords: Anabaena sp. We evaluated the incidence, prognosis, and predictive factors of new onset of persistent left bundle branch block (NOP-LBBB) after rapid-deployment aortic valve replacement (RD-AVR). This was an observational, retrospective, single-center study of 274 consecutive patients with no baseline ventricular conduction disorder and no previous permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) who underwent RD-AVR with an INTUITY valve (n = 55) or INTUITY Elite Valve (n = 219) (Edwards Lifesciences). Transthoracic echocardiography and 12-lead electrocardiography was performed preoperatively, at discharge, and at 1-month and 1-year intervals. The incidence, prognosis, and predictive factors of NOP-LBBB were evaluated. NOP-LBBB occurred in 58 patients (21.2%) after discharge. In multivariate analysis, age (P <.01), INTUITY valve diameter ≥23 mm (P =.02), and INTUITY Elite implantation (P =.01) were independent predictors of NOP-LBBB. By 1:1 propensity matching analysis between the NOP-LBBB group and the control group, there were no significant differences in 1-year overall mortality (P =.23), hospitalization for congestive heart failure (P =.99), or PPI (P =.99). NOP-LBBB exposed patients to a high rate of dysrhythmic events (12.1% vs 1.4%, P <.01) and was associated with a significant decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (0.62 ± 0.095 vs 0.652 ± 0.0783, P =.02) without an impact on New York Heart Association functional status (1.25 ± 0.32 and 1.52 ± 0.70, P =.32). PPI was performed in 17 patients (6.2%) before discharge, including 14 NOP-LBBB patients. NOP-LBBB after RD-AVR is prevalent in patients with no prior conduction disorders. INTUITY Elite is associated with a significantly higher rate of NOP-LBBB. The persistence of NOP-LBBB predisposed patients to the occurrence of high-grade conduction disorders and might have led to PPI but did not increase death or hospitalization for congestive heart failure. La péritonite est une complication fréquente du traitement par dialyse péritonéale chronique, contribuant à l'échec de la technique et/ou au décès. Les avantages réels d'un programme de formation continue sur les taux de péritonites sont peu connus. Dans cette étude, nous avons mesuré l'influence du protocole de formation continue de nos patients sur le taux de péritonites. Nous avons également étudié les conséquences de la perturbation de notre protocole liée au Covid sur les taux de péritonites. Nous présentons nos taux annuels de péritonites depuis la mise en place de notre programme de formation continue des patients en 2010. Nous avons ensuite concentré notre étude sur trois années consécutives : 2019, 2020 (émergence de la COVID-19) et 2021, en recueillant les données microbiologiques de chaque épisode de péritonite. Des analyses statistiques ont été utilisées pour corroborer nos résultats. Depuis 2010, le taux de péritonites a diminué linéairement (R2 = 0,6556 ; df = 8 ; p < 0,01) jusqu'à son nadir en 2019 avec 4 épisodes de péritonites. La majorité des infections ont alors été traitées en ambulatoire. En 2020, notre évaluation continue des procédures de dialyse au domicile des patients a diminué de 51 % et 28 péritonites sont survenues, 47 % secondaires à des bactéries cutanées strictes, et 31 % gastro-intestinales, indépendamment de l'expérience des patients ou de la modalité de dialyse péritonéale. Le taux d'hospitalisations a atteint 71 %. Après avoir rétabli notre protocole, nous avons diminué le taux de péritonites de 50 % en 2021. Les facteurs de risque de développer une péritonite sont identifiables et modifiables, et nécessitent des interventions soutenues, une surveillance visuelle ainsi qu'une formation continue. Ces interventions réduisent de manière significative les taux de péritonites. Toute brève interruption de l'évaluation de la technique des patients peut augmenter de manière significative les taux de péritonites. Peritonitis is a common complication of chronic peritoneal dialysis treatment contributing to both technique failure and/or death. Little is effectively known about the actual benefits of a continuous training program on peritonitis rates. In the present study, we measured the impact of our patients' training protocol on peritonitis rates. We further studied which consequences the COVID-related disruption of our follow-up program had on peritonitis rates. We present our yearly peritonitis rates since our patients' training and retraining program was implemented in 2010. We then focused our study on three consecutive years: 2019, 2020 (emergence of COVID-19), and 2021, collecting microbiological data from each peritonitis episode. Statistical analysis were used to corroborate our findings. Since 2010, peritonitis rates declined linearly (R2 = 0,6556; df = 8; P < 0.01) until its nadir in 2019 with 4 peritonitis episodes. The majority of infections were then treated in the outpatient Clinic. In 2020, our continuous technique evaluation decreased by 51% and 28 peritonitis episodes occurred, 47% secondary to strict cutaneous bacteria's, and 31% gastro-intestinal, irrespective of patients' experience or peritoneal dialysis modality. The hospitalization rate reached 71%. Having restored our protocol, we decreased peritonitis rates by 50% in 2021. Risk factors for peritonitis are identifiable and modifiable and require sustained intervention, continuous visual monitoring and training. These interventions significantly reduce peritonitis rates. In the context of automation and deployment of computer based control systems, a specific application on French railway line is proposed on low traffic single track railway lines. The issue of updates requires thorough consideration. In the case of low traffic single track railway lines, handling the removal of a shunting track, which role is to allow trains to circulate in both directions of a same line, the issue of timing the update to the control system is particularly critical. Indeed, a wrongly timed update could lead to a deadlock, while one or more trains are expected to travel while respecting safety constraints on the blocked infrastructure. This paper studies the application of works from the field of dynamic software updating, specifically the works of Panzica La Manna et al. [12]. Using their results on a graph based model of a single track rail line, it identifies alterability states that ensure safety constraints are respected at all times without causing deadlocks. The verb you 'to have' in standard Mandarin is typically followed by a noun. You can also take a VP as its complement ('you + VP') in several varieties of Mandarin. However, the function associated with it is still under debate: 'you + VP' has been analyzed as expressing past tense, perfective aspect, perfect aspect, or realis mood. This paper assesses these analyses by conducting a corpus-based investigation of 'you + VP' on the PTT platform and by looking at different morphosyntactic environments in which it is used. The data favor analyzing 'you + VP' as expressing an assertive modality meaning (the situation is considered true in the real world by the speaker). This analysis corroborates with the high frequency of 'you + VP' in assertive environments (e.g., after factual verbs in embedded clauses, with attitudinal adverbs of truth value, among others). Conversely, taking 'you + VP' as indicating past tense or perfective aspect is challenged by the present data, and the perfect aspect analysis cannot explain all the environments in which 'you + VP' is used.
