In 2019, the National Health Interview survey found that nearly 59% of adults reported pain some, most, or every day in the past 3 months, with 39% reporting back pain, making back pain the most prevalent source of pain, and a significant issue among adults. Often, identifying a direct, treatable cause for back pain is challenging, especially as it is often attributed to complex, multifaceted issues involving biological, psychological, and social components. Due to the difficulty in treating the true cause of chronic low back pain (cLBP), an over-reliance on opioid pain medications among cLBP patients has developed, which is associated with increased prevalence of opioid use disorder and increased risk of death. To combat the rise of opioid-related deaths, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiated the Helping to End Addiction Long-TermSM (HEAL) initiative, whose goal is to address the causes and treatment of opioid use disorder while also seeking to better understand, diagnose, and treat chronic pain. The NIH Back Pain Consortium (BACPAC) Research Program, a network of 14 funded entities, was launched as a part of the HEAL initiative to help address limitations surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of cLBP. This paper provides an overview of the BACPAC research program's goals and overall structure, and describes the harmonization efforts across the consortium, define its research agenda, and develop a collaborative project which utilizes the strengths of the network. The purpose of this paper is to serve as a blueprint for other consortia tasked with the advancement of pain related science.

The aim of this article is to examine the significance of teachers' conceptions of quality when assessing digital multimodal student productions. The authors have undertaken a design-based research study to examine how to support teachers' use of explicit quality criteria for multimodal production in 5th to 8th grade Danish and History classes (year 11-15). Through the development of a tool to support teachers' drawing up and use of assessment criteria for digital multimodal products, teachers' conceptions of quality of multimodal products were examined based on interviews and classroom observations. The authors propose four reasons for teachers not regarding qualities of digital multimodal genres as legitimate in school. Firstly, the relevance of product quality is not acknowledged. Second, opposing and confusing communication purposes for multimodal products in school leave no room for clear quality criteria and assessment of the products. Third, the learning potential of other modes than language is not accepted. And finally, the new digital multimodal genres are understood and assessed in the light of traditional school genres.

BackgroundStuttering, also known as childhood-onset fluency disorder, is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1% of the population and can greatly impact an individual's social, occupational, and academic functioning. Prior research has shown dopamine D2 antagonists are effective in reducing the severity of stuttering symptoms, but these compounds can be associated with metabolic and movement disorder adverse effects. Ecopipam is an investigational medication that acts as a selective dopamine D1 receptor antagonist. This mechanism should reduce the likelihood of metabolic and movement disorder adverse effects of D2 antagonists.MethodThis open-label pilot study investigated ecopipam in the treatment of adults who stutter.ResultsThe results showed that a majority of participants demonstrated improvement in their stuttering. The medication was well tolerated.ConclusionsThese positive, preliminary findings suggest that a doubleblind, randomized controlled clinical trial to examine the efficacy of ecopipam in the treatment of stuttering is warranted.

After more than 40 years of effort, energy efficiency program administrators and associated contractors still find it challenging to penetrate the home retrofit market, especially at levels commensurate with state and federal goals for energy savings and emissions reductions. Residential retrofit programs further have not coalesced around a reliably successful model. They still vary in design, implementation and performance, and they remain among the more difficult and costly options for acquiring savings in the residential sector. If programs are to contribute fully to meeting resource and policy objectives, administrators need to understand what program elements are key to acquiring residential savings as cost effectively as possible. To that end, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored a comprehensive review and analysis of home energy upgrade programs with proven track records, focusing on those with robustly verified savings and constituting good examples for replication. The study team reviewed evaluations for the period 2010 to 2014 for 134 programs that are funded by customers of investor-owned utilities. All are programs that promote multi-measure retrofits or major system upgrades. We paid particular attention to useful design and implementation features, costs, and savings for nearly 30 programs with rigorous evaluations of performance. This meta-analysis describes program models and implementation strategies for (1) direct install retrofits; (2) heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) replacement and early retirement; and (3) comprehensive, whole-home retrofits. We analyze costs and impacts of these program models, in terms of both energy savings and emissions avoided. These program models can be useful guides as states consider expanding their strategies for acquiring energy savings as a resource and for emissions reductions. We also discuss the challenges of using evaluations to create program models that can be confidently applied in multiple jurisdictions.

In this article, invitational theory is applied to the process of mentoring. The results of three research studies exploring mentoring of first-year school teachers led to factor analysis research in which 22 specific mentor related activities and behaviors in assisting first-year teachers are identified. These results were compiled to create the Hoffmeyer Mentoring Activity Checklist (HMAC).

The global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to an increased incidence of post-intubation laryngeal injuries in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The primary objective of this study was to identify risk factors for symptomatic laryngeal lesions in patients with Covid-19-related ARDS. The secondary objective was to analyze the progression of these laryngeal lesions. A 21 month nested case-control study was conducted in 3 university hospital centers of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (France). Cases encompassed all patients intubated for Covid-19-related ARDS who presented symptomatic laryngeal pathology. The control group consisted of all patients enrolled during the same period for Covid-19-related ARDS without evidence of laryngeal lesions (no specific ENT intervention). Uni- and multi-variate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for the occurrence of laryngeal lesions. Forty-nine patients were included in the case group and 50 in the control group. The only significant risk factor for symptomatic laryngeal injury was the number of reintubations, with an odds ratio of 5.08 (95% CI, 1.40–22.12; P = 0.013). No other predictive factors were identified among the variables analyzed: obesity, number of prone sessions, self-extubation, duration of intubation and number of days of curarization. The number of reintubations was the sole independent risk factor associated with the development of symptomatic laryngeal lesions in patients managed for Covid-19-related ARDS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
