Abstract This study introduces a distributed electrified heating approach that is able to innovate chemical engineering involving endothermic reactions. It enables rapid and uniform heating of gaseous reactants, facilitating efficient conversion and high product selectivity at specific equilibrium. Demonstrated in catalyst-free CH4 pyrolysis, this approach achieves stable production of H2 (530 g h−1 L reactor −1) and carbon nanotube/fibers through 100% conversion of high-throughput CH4 at 1150 °C, surpassing the results obtained from many complex metal catalysts and high-temperature technologies. Additionally, in catalytic CH4 dry reforming, the distributed electrified heating using metallic monolith with unmodified Ni/MgO catalyst washcoat showcased excellent CH4 and CO2 conversion rates, and syngas production capacity. This innovative heating approach eliminates the need for elongated reactor tubes and external furnaces, promising an energy-concentrated and ultra-compact reactor design significantly smaller than traditional industrial systems, marking a significant advance towards more sustainable and efficient chemical engineering society.

Abstract Producing sustainable anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) through catalytic graphitization of renewable biomass has gained significant attention. However, the technology is in its early stages due to the bio-graphite's comparatively low electrochemical performance in LIBs. This study aims to develop a process for producing LIB anode materials using a hybrid catalyst to enhance battery performance, along with readily available market biochar as the raw material. Results indicate that a trimetallic hybrid catalyst (Ni, Fe, and Mn in a 1:1:1 ratio) is superior to single or bimetallic catalysts in converting biochar to bio-graphite. The bio-graphite produced under this catalyst exhibits an 89.28% degree of graphitization and a 73.95% conversion rate. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveals the dissolution–precipitation mechanism involved in catalytic graphitization. Electrochemical performance evaluation showed that the trimetallic hybrid catalyst yielded bio-graphite with better electrochemical performances than those obtained through single or bimetallic hybrid catalysts, including a good reversible capacity of about 293 mAh g−1 at a current density of 20 mA/g and a stable cycle performance with a capacity retention of over 98% after 100 cycles. This study proves the synergistic efficacy of different metals in catalytic graphitization, impacting both graphite crystalline structure and electrochemical performance.

Abstract Feedstock properties play a crucial role in thermal conversion processes, where understanding the influence of these properties on treatment performance is essential for optimizing both feedstock selection and the overall process. In this study, a series of van Krevelen diagrams were generated to illustrate the impact of H/C and O/C ratios of feedstock on the products obtained from six commonly used thermal conversion techniques: torrefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, hydrothermal liquefaction, hydrothermal gasification, pyrolysis, and gasification. Machine learning methods were employed, utilizing data, methods, and results from corresponding studies in this field. Furthermore, the reliability of the constructed van Krevelen diagrams was analyzed to assess their dependability. The van Krevelen diagrams developed in this work systematically provide visual representations of the relationships between feedstock and products in thermal conversion processes, thereby aiding in optimizing the selection of feedstock and the choice of thermal conversion technique.

This article discusses the importance of driver understanding and trust in Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) and proposes a framework for a personalized driver coaching system called Driver Coach, focusing on the Volvo Pilot Assist (PA) function. Despite the widespread adoption of ADAS, research indicates that many drivers have limited comprehension of ADAS functionality and limitations. Moreover, feedback-related factors play a crucial role in determining drivers’ proper use of ADAS. The article emphasizes the need for appropriate, continual feedback to enhance driver interaction with ADAS. Traditional methods, such as user manuals or supervised test drives, have limitations in effectively conveying critical information and facilitating driver adaptation. To address these challenges, the proposed Driver Coach app provides personalized, real-time recommendations to drivers based on their individual needs and understanding of both the system and driving context. The app was tested in a field trial involving 17 drivers over a four-month period, and the results regarding the logic design verification and the impact of the Driver Coach app on PA usage are presented. The findings highlight the potential of personalized, context-aware coaching systems to improve driver understanding and usage of ADAS.

Lab-scale alloying experiments were carried out by first adding commercial low-carbon ferrochrome (LCFeCr) alloys and then adding ferroniobium (FeNb) alloys in 316-grade austenitic stainless steel in this study. The inclusion and precipitation characteristics in LCFeCr and FeNb were evaluated as well as in a 316 austenitic stainless steel after the alloy additions by using two- and three-dimensional characterization methods in combination with thermodynamic calculations. The results showed that MnCr2O4 spinels and pure Al2O3 were the main types of inclusions in LCFeCr alloys, while pure TiOx, Al2O3 inclusions and complex TiOx-Al2O3 aggregates were mainly found in FeNb alloys. After the addition of LCFeCr alloy to the steel, the SiO2 contents in liquid inclusions decreased to some extent, while more inclusions containing higher MnO contents were observed. Some MnCr2O4 spinel inclusions can be reduced by Si in steel and form liquid inclusions. Some MnCr2O4 spinel and Al2O3 inclusions from LCFeCr alloy can remain in the steel melt, which decreased the steel cleanliness. After the addition of FeNb alloy, pure TiOx inclusions present in this alloy can hardly be found in the steel melt. The inclusion types in steel were not changed so much but high Nb-containing phases were found around the inclusions and coarse Laves phases were formed in the matrix. Overall, this work aims to understand the impurity particle behavior during the alloying process when using ferroalloys to produce high-performance stainless steels.

Abstract Resource‐ and energy‐efficient biomass exploitation for green graphite production is one of the most effective strategies for satisfying graphite demand while minimizing energy consumption and carbon emissions. This study investigated green graphite production from biomass waste and its applications to establish a green graphite industry. Biomass pyrolysis and catalytic graphitization of biochar were studied first to produce green graphite. The optimized green graphite exhibited a reversible capacity of 264 mA h/g and 97% capacity retention over 100 cycles in a half‐cell. Green graphite electrodes with a resistivity lower than 5 μΩ m were fabricated by using organic fraction bio‐oil as a green binder. Other green graphite applications, including printing, conductive printing, pencils, and refractories, were also achieved. The overall process of graphite anode and electrode synthesis from biomass waste and short‐rotation energy crops was modeled. Approx. 95 kg of battery graphite or 109 kg of metallurgical graphite electrodes can be produced per ton of biomass with low primary energy consumption and carbon footprint. Prominently, the modeling result and life cycle assessment demonstrated that, for the production of battery graphite from biomass waste, net‐negative‐CO2 emissions (−0.57 kg CO2‐eq/kg graphite powders) with net‐negative‐primary energy consumption (−28.31 MJ/kg graphite powders) was achieved.

Malrotation leading to massive chylous ascites is rare. A 9-year-old girl was investigated for slowly increasing abdominal distension under a year. She had no vomiting, weight loss, or pain, but was bothered in social situations. Medical investigations, including ultrasound and computed tomography scans, revealed massive ascites. Laparocentesis yielded milk-colored fluid, confirmed as lymph through laboratory analysis. A complete blood count, liver function and hematologic parameters, chyle cytology, bacterial cultures, and polymerase chain reaction for tuberculosis were all within normal limits.

Anaerobic digestion presents a viable approach for managing biodegradable waste. However, the process generates a significant amount of digestate, which, if not appropriately managed, can contribute to eutrophication and salinization. This research explores the integration of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and pyrolysis as a potential solution for digestate management, emphasizing volume reduction and energy recovery. The study specifically focuses on the production of biochar from agricultural waste digestate (AWD) in an energy-efficient manner. Utilizing HTC as a pretreatment was found to enhance the heating value of both the AWD and the subsequent pyrolytic char, and it also improved the carbonization degree of the resulting char. Energy balance analysis revealed that the pyrolysis of AWD shifted from an endothermic to an exothermic reaction upon HTC pretreatment. This transition decreased the reaction's energy absorption from 41.1 to 1557.6 MJ to an energy release of 685.1 to 960.6 MJ per ton of digestate, thereby optimizing energy consumption in digestate management. Additionally, it was noted that using acetone as a solvent in gas chromatography for biooil samples with high ammonia content led to the formation of diacetonamine, an outcome that is deemed undesirable.

In this paper, a previous experimental investigation on physical refining of steel melts by filtration was numerically studied. To be specific, the filtration of non-metallic alumina inclusions, in the size range of 1–100 µm, was stimulated from steel melt using a square-celled monolithic alumina filter. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies, including simulations of both fluid flow and particle tracing using the one-way coupling method, were conducted. The CFD predicted results for particles in the size range of ≤5 µm were compared to the published experimental data. The modeled filtration setup could capture 100% of the particles larger than 50 µm. The percentage of the filtered particles decreased from 98% to 0% in the particle size range from 50 µm to 1 µm.

Abstract Background The radioligand [11C]VC-002 was introduced in a small initial study long ago for imaging of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) in human lungs using positron emission tomography (PET). The objectives of the present study in control subjects were to advance the methodology for quantification of [11C]VC-002 binding in lung and to examine the reliability using a test-retest paradigm. This work constituted a self-standing preparatory step in a larger clinical trial aiming at estimating mAChR occupancy in the human lungs following inhalation of mAChR antagonists. Methods PET measurements using [11C]VC-002 and the GE Discovery 710 PET/CT system were performed in seven control subjects at two separate occasions, 2–19 days apart. One subject discontinued the study after the first measurement. Radioligand binding to mAChRs in lung was quantified using an image-derived arterial input function. The total distribution volume (V T) values were obtained on a regional and voxel-by-voxel basis. Kinetic one-tissue and two-tissue compartment models (1TCM, 2TCM), analysis based on linearization of the compartment models (multilinear Logan) and image analysis by data-driven estimation of parametric images based on compartmental theory (DEPICT) were applied. The test-retest repeatability of V T estimates was evaluated by absolute variability (VAR) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Results The 1TCM was the statistically preferred model for description of [11C]VC-002 binding in the lungs. Low VAR (< 10%) across analysis methods indicated good reliability of the PET measurements. The V T estimates were stable after 60 min. Conclusions The kinetic behaviour and good repeatability of [11C]VC-002 as well as the novel lung image analysis methodology support its application in applied studies on drug-induced mAChR receptor occupancy and the pathophysiology of pulmonary disorders. Ceramic foam filters (CFFs) are used to remove inclusions and/or solid particles from molten metal. In general, the molten metal poured on the top of a CFF should reach a certain height to form the pressure (metal head) required to prime the filter. For estimating the required metal head and obtaining the permeability coefficients of the CFFs, permeability experiments are essential. Recently, electromagnetic priming and filtration of molten aluminum with low and high grades of CFF, i.e., 30, 50 and 80 pore per inch (PPI) CFFs, have been introduced. Since then, there has been interest in exploring the possibility of obtaining further inclusion entrapment and aluminum refinement by using electromagnetic force to prime and filter with stacked CFFs. The successful execution of such trials requires a profound understanding concerning the permeability parameters of the stacked filters. Such data were deemed not to exist prior to this study. As a result, this study presents experimental findings of permeability measurements for stacks of three 30, three 50 and three 80 PPI commercial alumina CFFs from different industrial batches and compares the findings to numerically modelled data as well as previous research works. Both experimental and numerical findings showed a good agreement with previous results. The deviation between the experimentally and numerically obtained data lies in the range of 0.4 to 6.3%.

Typical non-metallic inclusions in two industrial low-carbon steels for oil pipelines were investigated as three-dimensional objects on film filters after electrolytic extraction and filtration of metal samples. A method of soft chemical extraction using a 10%AA electrolyte was used to study the initial corrosion process in the steel matrix surrounding various non-metallic inclusions. To determine and compare “corrosive” inclusions and their influence on the initial stages of corrosion of the adjacent layer of the steel matrix, quantitative parameters (such as the diameter of the corrosion crater (Dcr) and pit (Dpit), and the relative dissolution coefficient of the metal matrix (KD) around various inclusions) were determined after chemical extraction. It was found that CaO-Al2O3-MgO oxides and TiN inclusions did not cause an initial corrosion of the steel matrix surrounding these inclusions. However, tensile stresses in the steel matrix occurred around CaS inclusions (or complex inclusions containing a CaS phase), which contributed to the initiation of corrosion around these inclusions.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a liver tumor that usually arises in patients with cirrhosis. Hepatic stellate cells are key players in the progression of HCC, as they create a fibrotic micro-environment and produce growth factors and cytokines that enhance tumor cell proliferation and migration. We assessed the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the cross-talk between stellate cells and HCC cells. Mice with a fibrotic HCC were treated with the IRE1α-inhibitor 4μ8C, which reduced tumor burden and collagen deposition. By co-culturing HCC-cells with stellate cells, we found that HCC-cells activate IREα in stellate cells, thereby contributing to their activation. Inhibiting IRE1α blocked stellate cell activation, which then decreased proliferation and migration of tumor cells in different in vitro 2D and 3D co-cultures. In addition, we also observed cell-line-specific direct effects of inhibiting IRE1α in tumor cells.

Several stainless-steel slags have been successfully employed in previous studies as substitutes for lime in the treatment of industrial acidic wastewaters. This study deepens the knowledge of such application, by analyzing the neutralizing capacity of different slags related to their mineral compositions. To do so, firstly the chemical and mineral compositions of all the slag samples are assessed. Then, 0.5 g, 1 g, 2 g of each slag and 0.25 g and 0.5 g of lime are used to neutralize 100 g of 0.1 M HCl or HNO3 solutions. After the has neutralization occurred, the solid residues are extracted and analyzed using XRD spectroscopy. Then, the solubility of the minerals is assessed and ranked, by comparing the XRD spectra of the residues with the obtained pH values. The results show that minerals such as dicalcium silicate and bredigite are highly soluble in the selected experimental conditions, while minerals such as merwinite and åkermanite, only partially. Moreover, Al-rich slags seem to perform poorly due to the formation of hydroxides, which generate extra protons. However, when the weight of slag is adequately adjusted, Al-rich slags can increase the pH values to higher levels compared to the other studied slags.

Different stainless steel slags have been successfully employed in previous experiments, for the treatment of industrial acidic wastewaters. Although, before this technology can be implemented on an industrial scale, upscaled pilot experiments need to be performed. In this study, the parameters of the upscale trials, such as the volume and mixing speeds, are firstly tested by dispersing a NaCl tracer in a water bath. Mixing time trials are used to maintain constant mixing conditions when the volumes are increased to 70, 80 and 90 L, compared to the 1 L laboratory trials. Subsequently, the parameters obtained are used in pH buffering trials, where stainless steel slags are used as reactants, replicating the methodology of previous studies. Compared to laboratory trials, the study found only a minor loss of efficiency. Specifically, in previous studies, 39 g/L of slag was needed to buffer the pH of the acidic wastewaters. To reach similar pH values within the same time span, upscaled trials found a ratio of 43 g/L and 44 g/L when 70 and 90 L are used, respectively. Therefore, when the kinetic conditions are controlled, the technology appears to be scalable to higher volumes. This is an important finding that hopefully promotes further investments in this technology.

Wrought nickel-based Alloy 825 is widely used in the oil and gas industries, attributed to its high strength at temperatures up to 540 °C. However, differences in mechanical properties arise in finished components due to variations in both grain size and dislocation density. Numerous experimental studies of the strengthening mechanisms have been reported and many models have been developed to predict strengthening under thermomechanical processing. However, there are debates surrounding some fundamental issues in modeling and the interpretation of experimental observations. Therefore, it is important to understand the evolution of strain within the material during the hot-forging process. In addition, there is a lack of research around the behavior during hot deformation and subsequent stabilization of Alloy 825. This article investigates the origin of this strength and considers a variety of strengthening mechanisms, resulting in a quantitative prediction of the contribution of each mechanism. The alloy is processed with a total forging strain of 0.45, 0.65, or 0.9, and subsequent annealing at a temperature of 950 °C, reflecting commercial practice. The microstructure after annealing is similar to that before annealing, suggesting that static recovery is dominant at this temperature. The maximum yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were 348 MPa and 618 MPa, respectively, obtained after forging to a true strain of 0.9, with a ductility of 40%. The majority of strengthening was attributed to grain refinement, the dislocation densities that arise due to the large forging strain deformation, and solid solution strengthening. Precipitate strengthening was also quantified using the Brown and Ham modification of the Orowan bowing model. The results of yield strength calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental data, with less than 1% difference. The interfacial energy of Ti(C,N) in the face-centered cubic matrix of the current alloy has been assessed for the first time, with a value of 0.8 mJm−2. These results can be used by future researchers and industry to predict the strength of Alloy 825 and similar alloys, especially after hot-forging.

In this study, CaO-containing wastes from pulp and paper industries such as fly ash (FA) and calcined lime mud (LM) were utilized to neutralize and purify acidic wastewaters from the pickling processes in steel mills. The investigations were conducted by laboratory scale trials using four different batches of wastewaters and additions of two types of CaO-containing waste materials. Primary lime (PL), which is usually used for the neutralization, was also tested in the same experimental set up in the sake of comparison. The results show that these secondary lime sources can effectively increase the pH of the acidic wastewaters as good as the commonly used primary lime. Therefore, these secondary lime sources could be potential candidates for application in neutralization processes of industrial acidic wastewater treatment. Moreover, concentrations of metals (such as Cr, Fe, Ni, Mo and Zn) can decrease dramatically after neutralization by using secondary lime. The LM has a purification effect from the given metals, similar to the PL. Application of fly ash and calcined lime mud as neutralizing agents can reduce the amount of waste from pulp and paper mills sent to landfill and decrease the need for nature lime materials in the steel industry.
