Aerosols are capable of having a huge influence on reflected, emitted and transmitted planetary spectra. The Near InfraRed Spectrograph (NIRSpec) using the PRISM mode on board of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is providing valuable data of transit spectra over a wide spectral range that is able to cover the whole contribution of aerosols, potentially disentangling them from other constituents and thus allowing to constrain their properties. We aim to investigate whether NIRSpec/PRISM JWST transmission spectroscopy observations, in addition to being useful to detect and determine the abundance of gases more accurately than any previous instruments, are also capable of studying the physical properties of the aerosols in exoplanetary atmospheres. We perform nested sampling Bayesian retrievals with MultiNest library. We use the Planetary Spectrum Generator (PSG) and the Modelled Optical Properties of enSeMbles of Aerosol Particles (MOPSMAP) database as tools for the forward simulations and NIRSpec/PRISM JWST previously published observations of WASP-39b as input data. Retrievals indicate that models including an aerosol extinction weakly increasing or sharply decreasing with wavelength are decisively better than those with a flat transmission and that this increased degree of complexity is supported by the kind of data that JWST/NIRSpec can provide. Given other physical constraints from previous works, the scenario of weakly increasing particle extinction is favoured. We also find that this also has an effect on the retrieved gas abundances. JWST observations have the potential to study some physical characteristics of exoplanetary clouds, in particular their overall dependence of transmissivity with wavelength. We investigate the long-term motion of Saturn's North-Pole Hexagon and the structure of its associated eastward jet, using Cassini ISS and ground-based images from 2008 to 2014. We show that both are persistent features that have survived the long polar night, the jet profile remaining essentially unchanged. During those years the hexagon vertices showed a steady rotation period of 10 hr 39 min 23.01 $\pm$ 0.01 s. Analysis of Voyager 1 and 2 (1980-1981) and HST and ground-based (1990-91) images shows a period shorter by 3.5s, due to the presence at the time of a large anticyclone. We interpret the hexagon as a manifestation of a vertically trapped Rossby wave on the polar jet and, because of their survival and unchanged properties under the strong seasonal variations in insolation, we propose that both hexagon and jet are deep-rooted atmospheric features that could reveal the true rotation of the planet Saturn.

Saturn has an intense and broad eastward equatorial jet with a complex three-dimensional structure mixed with time variability. The equatorial region experiences strong seasonal insolation variations enhanced by ring shadowing and three of the six known giant planetary-scale storms have developed in it. These factors make Saturn's equator a natural laboratory to test models of jets in giant planets. Here we report on a bright equatorial atmospheric feature imaged in 2015 that moved steadily at a high speed of 450 ms-1 not measured since 1980-81 with other equatorial clouds moving within an ample range of velocities. Radiative transfer models show that these motions occur at three altitude levels within the upper haze and clouds. We find that the peak of the jet (latitudes 10\degree N to 10\degree S) suffers intense vertical shears reaching +2.5 ms-1 km-1, two orders of magnitude higher than meridional shears, and temporal variability above 1 bar altitude level.

In June 2015, Cassini high-resolution images of Saturn's limb southwards of the planet's hexagonal wave revealed a system of at least six stacked haze layers above the upper cloud deck. Here, we characterize those haze layers and discuss their nature. Vertical thickness of layers ranged from 7 to 18 km, and they extended in altitude approx 130 km, from pressure level 0.5 bar to 0.01 bar. Above them, a thin but extended aerosol layer reached altitude approx 340 km (0.4 mbar). Radiative transfer modeling of spectral reflectivity shows that haze properties are consistent with particles of diameter 0.07- 1.4 \{mu}m and number density 100 - 500 cm -3. The nature of the hazes is compatible with their formation by condensation of hydrocarbon ices, including acetylene and benzene at higher altitudes. Their vertical distribution could be due to upward propagating gravity waves generated by dynamical forcing by the hexagon and its associated eastward jet.

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. The transition region between the North Equatorial Band (NEBn) and North Tropical Zone (NTrZ) in Jupiter is home to convective storms, systems of cyclones and anticyclones and atmospheric waves. A large anticyclone formed in the year 2006 at planetographic latitude 19N and persists since then after a complex dynamic history, being possibly the third longest-lived oval in the planet after Jupiter's Great Red Spot and oval BA. This anticyclone has experienced close interactions with other ovals, merging with another oval in February 2013; it has also experienced color changes, from white to red (September 2013). The oval survived the effects of the closely located North Temperate Belt Disturbance, which occurred in October 2016 and fully covered the oval, rendering it unobservable for a short time. When it became visible again at its expected longitude from its previous longitudinal track, it reappeared as a white large oval keeping this color and the same morphology since 2017 at least until the onset of the new convective disturbance in Jupiter's North Temperate Belt in August 2020. Here we describe the historic evolution of the properties of this oval. We use JunoCam and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images to measure its size and its internal rotation. We also used HST and PlanetCam-UPV/EHU multi-wavelength observations to characterize its color changes and Junocam images to unveil its detailed structure. The color and the altitude-opacity indices show that the oval is higher and has redder clouds than its environment but has lower cloud tops than other large ovals like the GRS, and it is less red than the GRS and oval BA. We show that in spite of the dramatic environmental changes suffered by the oval during all these years, its main characteristics are stable in time and therefore must be related with the atmospheric dynamics below the observable cloud decks.

We present a reanalysis of visible/near-infrared (480-930 nm) observations of Neptune, made in 2018 with the MUSE instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Narrow Field Adaptive Optics mode, reported by Irwin et al., Icarus, 311, 2019. We find that the inferred variation of methane abundance with latitude in our previous analysis, which was based on central meridian observations only, underestimated the retrieval errors when compared with a more complete assessment of Neptune's limb darkening. In addition, our previous analysis introduced spurious latitudinal variability of both the abundance and its uncertainty, which we reassess here. Our reanalysis of these data incorporates the effects of limb-darkening based upon the Minnaert approximation, which provides a much stronger constraint on the cloud structure and methane mole fraction, makes better use of the available data and is more computationally efficient. We find that away from discrete cloud features, the observed reflectivity spectrum from 800-900 nm is very well approximated by a background cloud model that is latitudinally varying, but zonally symmetric, consisting of a H$_2$S cloud layer, based at 3.6-4.7 bar with variable opacity and scale height, and a stratospheric haze. The background cloud model matches the observed limb darkening seen at all wavelengths and latitudes and we find that the mole fraction of methane at 2-4 bar, above the H$_2$S cloud, but below the methane condensation level, varies from 4-6\% at the equator to 2-4\% at near the south pole, consistent with previous analyses, with a equator/pole ratio of $1.9 \pm 0.2$ for our assumed cloud/methane model. The spectra of discrete cloudy regions are fitted, to a very good approximation, by the addition of a single vertically thin methane ice cloud with opacity ranging from 0 - 0.75 and pressure less than $\sim 0.4$ bar.

Among the four known transneptunian dwarf planets, Haumea is an exotic, very elongated, and fast rotating body. In contrast to the other dwarf planets, its size, shape, albedo, and density are not well constrained. Here we report results of a multi-chord stellar occultation, observed on 2017 January 21. Secondary events observed around the main body are consistent with the presence of a ring of opacity 0.5, width 70 km, and radius 2,287$_{-45}^{+75}$ km. The Centaur Chariklo was the first body other than a giant planet to show a ring system and the Centaur Chiron was later found to possess something similar to Chariklo's rings. Haumea is the first body outside the Centaur population with a ring. The ring is coplanar with both Haumea's equator and the orbit of its satellite Hi'iaka. Its radius places close to the 3:1 mean motion resonance with Haumea's spin period. The occultation by the main body provides an instantaneous elliptical limb with axes 1,704 $\pm$ 4 km x 1,138 $\pm$ 26 km. Combined with rotational light-curves, it constrains Haumea's 3D orientation and its triaxial shape, which is inconsistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium. Haumea's largest axis is at least 2,322 $\pm$ 60 km, larger than thought before. This implies an upper limit of 1,885 $\pm$ 80 kg m$^{-3}$ for Haumea's density, smaller and less puzzling than previous estimations, and a geometric albedo of 0.51 $\pm$ 0.02, also smaller than previous estimations. No global N$_2$ or CH$_4$ atmosphere with pressures larger than 15 and 50 nbar (3-$\sigma$ limits), respectively, is detected.

Moist convective storms in Jupiter develop frequently and can trigger atmospheric activity of different scales, from localized storms to planetary-scale disturbances including convective activity confined inside a larger meteorological system. In February 2018 a series of convective storms erupted in Jupiter's South Temperate Belt (STB) (planetocentric latitudes from -23$^{\circ}$ to -29.5$^{\circ}$). This occurred inside an elongated cyclonic region known popularly as the STB Ghost, close to the large anticyclone Oval BA, resulting in the clouds from the storms being confined to the cyclone. The initial storms lasted only a few days but they generated abundant enduring turbulence. They also produced dark features, possibly partially devoid of clouds, that circulated around the cyclone over the first week. The subsequent activity developed over months and resulted in two main structures, one of them closely interacting with Oval BA and the other one being expelled to the west. Here we present a study of this meteorological activity based on daily observations provided by the amateur community, complemented by observations obtained from PlanetCam UPV/EHU at Calar Alto Observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope and by JunoCam on the Juno spacecraft. We also perform numerical simulations with the EPIC General Circulation Model to reproduce the phenomenology observed. The successful simulations require a complex interplay between the Ghost, the convective eruptions and Oval BA, and they demonstrate that water moist convection was the source of the initial storms. A simple scale comparison with other moist convective storms that can be observed in the planet in visible and methane absorption band images strongly suggests that most of these storms are powered by water condensation instead of ammonia., Comment: 73 pages, 18 figures, manuscript available online in Icarus

We examine Saturn's atmosphere with observations from ground-based telescopes and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We present a detailed analysis of observations acquired during 2018. A system of polar storms that appeared in the planet in March 2018 and remained active with a complex phenomenology at least until Sept. is analyzed elsewhere (Sanchez-Lavega et al., in press , 2019). Many of the cloud features in 2018 are long-lived and can be identified in images in 2017, and in some cases, for up to a decade using also Cassini ISS images. Without considering the polar storms, the most interesting long-lived cloud systems are: i) A bright spot in the EZ that can be tracked continuously since 2014 with a zonal velocity of 444 m/s in 2014 and 452 m/s in 2018. This velocity is different from the zonal winds at the cloud level at its latitude during the Cassini mission, and is closer to zonal winds obtained at the time of the Voyager flybys and zonal winds from Cassini VIMS infrared images of the lower atmosphere. ii) A large Anticyclone Vortex, here AV, that formed after the GWS of 2010-2011. This vortex has changed significantly in visual contrast, drift rate and latitude with minor changes in size over the last years. iii) A system of subpolar vortices present at least since 2011. These vortices follow drift rates consistent with zonal winds obtained by Cassini. We also present the positions of the vertices of the North polar hexagon from 2015 to 2018 compared with previous analyses during Cassini (2007-2014), observations with HST, and Voyager data in 1980-1981 to explore the long-term hexagon's drift rate. Variations in the drift rate cannot be fit by seasonal changes. In this paper we present a study of the vertical haze and cloud structure over a triple vortex in Saturn's atmosphere in the planetographic latitude range 55N-69N (del Rio- Gaztelurrutia et al. , 2018) using HST/WFC3 multispectral imaging. The observations were taken during 29-30 June and 1 July 2015 at ten different filters covering spectral range from the 225 nm to 937 nm, including the deep methane band at 889 nm. Absolute reflectivity measurements of this region at all wavelengths and under a number of illumination and observation geometries are fitted with the values produced by a radiative transfer model. Most of the reflectivity variations in this wavelength range can be attributed to changes in the tropospheric haze. The anticyclones are optically thicker ($\tau \sim$ 25 vs $\sim$ 10), more vertically extended ($\sim$ 3 gas scale heights vs $\sim$ 2) and their bases are located deeper in the atmosphere (550 mbar vs 500 mbar) than the cyclone., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures

Dust is the main driver of Mars' atmospheric variability. The determination of Martian dust aerosol properties is of high relevance for radiative modelling and calculating its weather forcing. In particular, the light scattering behaviour at intermediate and large scattering angles can provide valuable information regarding the airborne dust particle shape. The angular distribution of sky brightness observed by the Mars Science Laboratory engineering cameras (Navcam and Hazcam) is used here to characterise the atmospheric dust single scattering phase function and to constrain the shape of the particles. An iterative radiative transfer based retrieval method was implemented in order to determine the aerosol modelling parameters which best reproduce the observed sky radiance as a function of the scattering angle in the solar almucantar plane. The aerosol models considered in this study for retrieving dust radiative properties were an analytical three term Double Henyey-Greenstein phase function, T-matrix calculations for cylindrical particles with different diameter-to-length aspect ratios and experimental phase functions from laboratory measurements of several Martian dust analogue samples. Results of this study returned mean DHG phase function parameter values in line with Wolff et al. (2009). Although differences were observed during the low opacity aphelion season (lower forward scattering values, presence of a peak in the backward region) compared to the rest of the year, no clear evidences of seasonal behaviour or interannual variability were derived. The obtained average D/L aspect ratios for T-matrix calculated cylindrical particles were 0.70{\pm}0.20 and 1.90{\pm}0.20, and the best fitting Martian dust analogue corresponded to the basalt sample.

In this paper we show that Sun-viewing images obtained by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Navigation Cameras (Navcam) can be used for retrieving the dust optical depth and constrain the aerosol physical properties at Gale Crater by evaluating the sky brightness as a function of the scattering angle. We have used 65 Sun-pointing images covering a period of almost three Martian years, from MSL mission sol 21 to sol 1646 (MY 31 to 33). Radiometric calibration and geometric reduction were performed on MSL Navcam raw image data records to provide the observed sky radiance as a function of the scattering angle for the near-Sun region (scattering angle from 4{\deg} to 30{\deg}). These curves were fitted with a multiple scattering radiative transfer model for a plane-parallel Martian atmosphere model using the discrete ordinates method. Modelled sky brightness curves were generated as a function of two parameters: the aerosol particle size distribution effective radius and the dust column optical depth at the surface. A retrieval scheme was implemented for deriving the parameters that generated the best fitting curve under a least-square error criterion. The obtained results present a good agreement with previous work, showing the seasonal dependence of both dust column optical depth and the effectiveparticle radius.

One of the most intriguing, long-standing questions regarding Venus' atmosphere is the origin and distribution of the unknown UV-absorber, responsible for the absorption band detected at the near-UV and blue range of Venus' spectrum. In this work, we use data collected by MASCS spectrograph on board the MESSENGER mission during its second Venus flyby in June 2007 to address this issue. Spectra range from 0.3 {\mu}m to 1.5 {\mu}m including some gaseous H2O and CO2 bands, as well as part of the SO2 absorption band and the core of the UV absorption. We used the NEMESIS radiative transfer code and retrieval suite to investigate the vertical distribution of particles in the Equatorial atmosphere and to retrieve the imaginary refractive indices of the UV-absorber, assumed to be well mixed with Venus' small mode-1 particles. The results show an homogeneous Equatorial atmosphere, with cloud tops (height for unity optical depth) at 75+/-2 km above surface. The UV absorption is found to be centered at 0.34+/-0.03 {\mu}m with a full width half maximum of 0.14+/-0.01 {\mu}m. Our values are compared with previous candidates for the UV aerosol absorber, among which disulfur oxide (S2O) and dioxide disulfur (S2O2) provide the best agreement with our results., Comment: 43 pages, 16 figures

We provide measurements of the absolute reflectivity of Jupiter and Saturn along their central meridians in filters covering a wide range of visible and near-infrared wavelengths (from 0.38 to 1.7 $\mu$m) that are not often presented in the literature. We also give measurements of the geometric albedo of both planets and discuss the limb-darkening behavior and temporal variability of their reflectivity values for a period of four years (2012-2016). This work is based on observations with the PlanetCam-UPV/EHU instrument at the 1.23 m and 2.2 m telescopes in Calar Alto Observatory (Spain). The instrument simultaneously observes in two channels: visible (VIS; 0.38-1.0 $\mu$m) and short-wave infrared (SWIR; 1.0--1.7 $\mu$m). We obtained high-resolution observations via the lucky-imaging method. We show that our calibration is consistent with previous independent determinations of reflectivity values of these planets and, for future reference, provide new data extended in the wavelength range and in the time. Our results have an uncertainty in absolute calibration of 10--20\%. We show that under the hypothesis of constant geometric albedo, we are able to detect absolute reflectivity changes related to planetary temporal evolution of about 5-10\%., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures, (in press)

Since 2013, observations of Neptune with small telescopes have resulted in several detections of long-lived bright atmospheric features that have also been observed by large telescopes such as Keck II or Hubble. The combination of both types of images allows the study of the long term evolution of major cloud systems in the planet. In 2013 and 2014 two bright features were present on the planet at southern mid latitudes. These may have merged in late 2014, possibly leading to the formation of a single bright feature observed during 2015 at the same latitude. This cloud system was first observed in January 2015 and nearly continuously from July to December 2015 in observations with telescopes in the 2 to 10 meter class and in images from amateur astronomers. These images show the bright spot as a compact feature at 40.1 deg South planetographic latitude well resolved from a nearby bright zonal band that extended from 42 deg South to 20 deg South. Tracking its motion from July to November 2015 suggests a longitudinal oscillation of 16 deg in amplitude with a 90 day period, typical of dark spots on Neptune and similar to the Great Red Spot oscillation in Jupiter. The limited time covered by high-resolution observations only covers one full oscillation and other interpretations of the changing motions could be possible. We report Venus image observations around the two maximum elongations of the planet at June and October 2015. From these images we describe the global atmospheric dynamics and cloud morphology in the planet before the arrival of JAXA Akatsuki mission on December the 7th. The majority of the images were acquired at ultraviolet wavelengths (380-410 nm) using small telescopes. The Venus dayside was also observed with narrow band filters at other wavelengths (890 nm, 725-950 nm, 1.435 {\mu}m CO2 band) using the instrument PlanetCam-UPV/EHU at the 2.2m telescope in Calar Alto Observatory. In all cases, the lucky imaging methodology was used to improve the spatial resolution of the images over the atmospheric seeing. During the April-June period, the morphology of the upper cloud showed an irregular and chaotic texture with a well developed equatorial dark belt (afternoon hemisphere), whereas during October-December the dynamical regime was dominated by planetary-scale waves (Yhorizontal, C-reversed and {\psi}-horizontal features) formed by long streaks, and banding suggesting more stable conditions. Measurements of the zonal wind velocity with cloud tracking in the latitude range from 50$^{\circ}$N to 50$^{\circ}$S shows agreement with retrievals from previous works., Comment: Accepted in Astrophys. The discovery of almost 2000 exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? What causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) has been designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large and diverse planet sample within its four-year mission lifetime. EChO can target the atmospheres of super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300K-3000K) of F to M-type host stars. Over the next ten years, several new ground- and space-based transit surveys will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment, as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. A 1m class telescope is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision. The spectral coverage (0.5-11 micron, goal 16 micron) and SNR to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would enable a very accurate measurement of the atmospheric composition and structure of hundreds of exoplanets., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures. Context. Reflected light from a spatially unresolved planet yields unique insight into the overall optical properties of the planet cover. Glories are optical phenomena caused by light that is backscattered within spherical droplets following a narrow distribution of sizes; they are well known on Earth as localised features above liquid clouds. Aims. Here we report the first evidence for a glory in the disk-integrated photometry of Venus and, in turn, of any planet. Methods. We used previously published phase curves of the planet that were reproduced over the full range of phase angles with model predictions based on a realistic description of the Venus atmosphere. We assumed that the optical properties of the planet as a whole can be described by a uniform and stable cloud cover, an assumption that agrees well with observational evidence. Results. We specifically show that the measured phase curves mimic the scattering properties of the Venus upper-cloud micron-sized aerosols, also at the small phase angles at which the glory occurs, and that the glory contrast is consistent with what is expected after multiple scattering of photons. In the optical, the planet appears to be brighter at phase angles of 11-13 deg than at full illumination; it undergoes a maximum dimming of up to 10 percent at phases in between. Conclusions. Glories might potentially indicate spherical droplets and, thus, extant liquid clouds in the atmospheres of exoplanets. Amateur contributions to professional publications have increased exponentially over the last decades in the field of Planetary Astronomy. Here we review the different domains of the field in which collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers are effective and regularly lead to scientific publications. We discuss the instruments, detectors, softwares and methodologies typically used by amateur astronomers to collect the scientific data in the different domains of interest. Amateur contributions to the monitoring of planets and interplanetary matter, characterization of asteroids and comets, as well as the determination of the physical properties of Kuiper Belt Objects and exoplanets are discussed., Comment: 123 pages, Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

Cosmic collisions on planets cause detectable optical flashes that range from terrestrial shooting stars to bright fireballs. On June 3, 2010 a bolide in Jupiter's atmosphere was simultaneously observed from the Earth by two amateur astronomers observing Jupiter in red and blue wavelengths. The bolide appeared as a flash of 2 s duration in video recording data of the planet. The analysis of the light curve of the observations results in an estimated energy of the impact of 0.9-4.0x10^{15} J which corresponds to a colliding body of 8-13 m diameter assuming a mean density of 2 g cm^{-3}. Images acquired a few days later by the Hubble Space Telescope and other large ground-based facilities did not show any signature of aerosol debris, temperature or chemical composition anomaly, confirming that the body was small and destroyed in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. Several collisions of this size may happen on Jupiter on a yearly basis. A systematic study of the impact rate and size of these bolides can enable an empirical determination of the flux of meteoroids in Jupiter with implications for the populations of small bodies in the outer Solar System and may allow a better quantification of the threat of impacting bodies to Earth. The serendipitous recording of this optical flash opens a new window in the observation of Jupiter with small telescopes.

On 2009 July 19, we observed a single, large impact on Jupiter at a planetocentric latitude of 55^{\circ}S. This and the Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) impacts on Jupiter in 1994 are the only planetary-scale impacts ever observed. The 2009 impact had an entry trajectory opposite and with a lower incidence angle than that of SL9. Comparison of the initial aerosol cloud debris properties, spanning 4,800 km east-west and 2,500 km north-south, with those produced by the SL9 fragments, and dynamical calculations of pre-impact orbit, indicate that the impactor was most probably an icy body with a size of 0.5-1 km. The collision rate of events of this magnitude may be five to ten times more frequent than previously thought. The search for unpredicted impacts, such as the current one, could be best performed in 890-nm and K (2.03-2.36 {\mu}m) filters in strong gaseous absorption, where the high-altitude aerosols are more reflective than Jupiter's primary cloud., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures
