This paper describes a study of explosively welded, commercially pure titanium-stainless steel 316L plates. Following welding, the plates were heat-treated at the temperature of 600°C for 90 minutes. Examinations of the bond structure were carried out before and after heat treatment to investigate the processes taking place during explosive welding of materials. Observations were performed using light, scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties were examined applying three-point bending tests with cyclic loads. Fractographic examination and hardness measurements were also performed. It has been found that the bonding zones are characterized by a specific microstructure, chemical composition and microhardness. The heat treatment used in the study increases the relative volume of brittle intermetallic phases, causing a reduction in fatigue strength of the joint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This work presents new results on the dynamic synthesis and decomposition of ternary Mg2FeH6. A novel synthesis method was applied for the rapid and effective synthesis of a ternary Mg–Fe hydride. This method consists of two processing routes. The first route involves high-energy ball milling of the initial MgH2–Fe powder mixture, while the second is composed of a unique pressurizing and heating cycle route to obtain a full phase transformation within half an hour. The structural investigations carried out by X-ray diffraction revealed that almost all of the initial powder mixture transforms into the ternary hydride. Furthermore, the sample, which was synthesized, was also decomposed and reloaded with hydrogen. The formation of Mg2FeH6 consists of two steps that involve MgH2 as an intermediate compound. In contrast, the decomposition of Mg2FeH6 consists of only one step and does not follow the inverse route. Some traces of iron were found in the reaction products. TDP results show that a desorption peak occurs at 315°C, and this is in good agreement with DSC measurements showing only a single endothermic peak around 340°C. Microstructural examinations revealed that the synthesized Mg2FeH6 powder generally exhibits a duplex structure that consists of plate-like particles larger than 1μm in diameter and spherical particles smaller than 50nm that show a tendency to agglomerate and form larger particles exhibiting a sponge-like structure. The formation of Mg2FeH6 takes place at the phase boundary between Fe seeds and the growing hydride phase. In contrast, the decomposition of the Mg2FeH6 phase takes place with the formation of the separate nanosized Mg and Fe phases. The dehydrogenated powder sample shows oval Fe precipitates of 10–100nm in size that are embedded in the Mg-based matrix. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: One of the most crucial steps in the development of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) reduced activation ferritic (RAF) steels is the engineering of their microstructure, which includes control of the type and size of oxide nanoparticles. In this work, the composition and crystal structure of oxide particles grown in the Fe–14Cr–2W–0.3Ti–0.3Y2O3 ODS RAF steel were characterized using advanced spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The electron energy loss spectroscopic mapping has shown presence of numerous fine Y–Ti–O oxides but also larger Cr–Ti–O and Cr–N particles among those extracted from the bulk samples. In addition, atom probe tomography of the as-compacted ODS RAF samples revealed a uniform spatial distribution of fine oxides containing mainly Y, Ti, and O. The orthorhombic YTiO3, having distorted perovskite structure, was identified in all analyzed oxides using HR-STEM and diffraction pattern analysis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A ternary Mg2NiH4 hydride was synthesized using method that relies on a relatively short mechanical milling time (one hour) of a 2:1 MgH2–Ni powder mixture followed by sintering at a sufficiently high hydrogen pressure (>85 bar) and temperature (>400 °C). The ternary hydride forms in less than 2.5 h (including the milling time) with a yield of ∼90% as a mixture of two polymorphic forms. The mechanisms of formation and decomposition of ternary Mg2NiH4 under different hydrogen pressures were studied in detail using an in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction (SR-PXD) and high pressure DSC. The obtained experimental results are supported by morphological and microstructural investigations performed using SEM and high resolution STEM. Additionally, effects occurring during the desorption reaction were studied using DSC coupled with mass spectrometry. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this study, the interaction of pure Mg and WE43 alloy under the presence of osteoblast (OB) and osteoclast (OC) cells and their influence on the degradation of materials have been deeply analyzed. Since OB and OC interaction has an important role in bone remodeling, we examined the surface morphology and dynamic changes in the chemical composition and thickness of the corrosion layers formed on pure Mg and WE43 alloy by direct monoculture and coculture of pre-differentiated OB and OC cells in vitro. Electrochemical techniques examined the corrosion performance. The corrosion products were characterized using a combination of the focused ion beam (FIB), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Cell viability and morphology were assessed by fluorescent microscopy and SEM. Our findings demonstrate cell spread and attachment variations, which differ depending on the Mg substrates. It was clearly shown that cell culture groups delayed degradation processes with the lowest corrosion rate observed in the presence of OBOC coculture for the WE43 substrate. Ca-P enrichment was observed in the outer-middle region of the corrosion layer but only after 7 days of OBOC coculture on WE43 and after 14 days on the pure Mg specimens. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Magnesium metallic materials that can degrade over time provide distinct opportunities for orthopedic application. However, there is still a lack, especially in elucidating cell-material interface characterization. This study investigated the influence of osteoblast-osteoclast coculture in direct Mg-material contact. Our findings demonstrated that pre-differentiated osteoblasts and osteoclasts cocultured on Mg substrates influenced the chemistry of the corrosion layers. The cell spread and attachment were Mg substrate-dependent. A current approach to depositing highly plasmonic titanium nitride films using the magnetron sputtering technique assumes that the process is performed at temperatures high enough to ensure the atoms have sufficient diffusivities to form dense and highly crystalline films. In this work, we demonstrate that the plasmonic properties of TiN films can be efficiently tuned even without intentional substrate heating by influencing the details of the deposition process and entailed films' stoichiometry and microstructure. We also discuss the dependence of the deposition time/films' thickness on the optical properties, which is another degree of freedom in controlling the optical response of the refractory metal nitride films. The proposed strategy allows for robust and cost-effective production of large-scale substrates with good plasmonic properties in a CMOS technology-compatible process that can be further processed, e.g., structurized. All reported films are characterized by the maximal values of the plasmonic Figure of Merit (FoM = - ε 1 /ε 2 ) ranging from 0.8 to 2.6, and the sample with the best plasmonic properties is characterized by FoM at 700 nm and 1550 nm that is equal 2.1 in both cases. Magnesium (Mg) alloys have become a potential material for orthopedic implants due to their unnecessary implant removal, biocompatibility, and mechanical integrity until fracture healing. This study examined the in vitro and in vivo degradation of an Mg fixation screw composed of Mg-0.45Zn-0.45Ca (ZX00, in wt.%). With ZX00 human-sized implants, in vitro immersion tests up to 28 days under physiological conditions, along with electrochemical measurements were performed for the first time. In addition, ZX00 screws were implanted in the diaphysis of sheep for 6, 12, and 24 weeks to assess the degradation and biocompatibility of the screws in vivo . Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), micro-computed tomography (μCT), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and histology, the surface and cross-sectional morphologies of the corrosion layers formed, as well as the bone-corrosion-layer-implant interfaces, were analyzed. Our findings from in vivo testing demonstrated that ZX00 alloy promotes bone healing and the formation of new bone in direct contact with the corrosion products. In addition, the same elemental composition of corrosion products was observed for in vitro and in vivo experiments; however, their elemental distribution and thicknesses differ depending on the implant location. Our findings suggest that the corrosion resistance was microstructure-dependent. The head zone was the least corrosion-resistant, indicating that the production procedure could impact the corrosion performance of the implant. Samples of 316L SS were manufactured by Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS ® ) using different technological parameters. The deposited samples were investigated in terms of microstructure, mechanical properties, phase content and corrosion resistance (salt chamber and electrochemical corrosion). Parameters were chosen to obtain a proper sample built for layer thicknesses of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.7 mm by changing the laser feed rate while keeping the powder feed rate constant. After a comprehensive analysis of the results, it was found that the manufacturing parameters slightly affected the resulting microstructure and also had a minor impact (almost undetectable considering the uncertainty of the measurement) on the mechanical properties of samples. Decreases in resistance to electrochemical pitting corrosion and environmental corrosion with an increased feed rate and a decrease in layer thickness and grain size were observed; however, all additively manufactured samples were found to be less prone to corrosion than the reference material. In the investigated processing window, no influence of deposition parameters on the phase content of the final product was found-all the samples were found to possess austenitic microstructure with almost no detectable ferrite.

The biological methods are considered as environmental-eco-friendly methods for the silver nanocomposites mediation and are widely used in this context. However, the biological methods go along with the relevant limitations, for instance simultaneous synthesis of silver chlorides (AgNCl) type during the AgNPs mediation process. Therefore, the present research is coming to summarize several aspects in this context. Firstly, to present the possible promotion of the sustainable development using bioactive source (e.g. milk) as a source of two different available and new lactobacillus strains (Lactobacillus curvatus and Lactobacillus fermentum). Secondly, to show the ability of the respective isolates to be involved in mediation of various biosilver nanocomposites ((Bio)NCs) synthesis. Moreover, at this stage, for the first time, two (Bio)NCs mediation methods, called "direct method" and "modified method", have been developed, thus three types (AgNPs, AgNCl and AgNP@AgNCl) of nanocomposites mediated by two different Lactobacillus isolates take place. The interdisciplinary approach included using several spectroscopic, microscopic, spectrometric and thermogravimetric methods demonstrated that all six synthesized nanoparticles (three AgNPs, AgNCl and AgNP@AgNCl types from each source) consist of complex structure including both metallic silver core as well as organic surface deposits. The spectrometric technique allowed to identification of the organics branching surface, naturally secreted by the used Lactobacillus isolates during the inoculation step, suggesting the presence of amino-acids sequences which are direct connected with the reduction of silver ion to metal silver, and subsequently with the formation of coated (Bio)NCs and nucleation process. Moreover, based on the obtained results, the mediation mechanism of each (Bio)NCs has been proposed, suggesting that the formation of AgNPs, AgNCl and AgNP@AgNCl types occurs in different manners with faster synthesis firstly of AgNCl, then of the AgNPs type. No differences between the (Bio)NCs synthesized by two different Lactobacillus isolates have been noticed indicating no discrepancies between metabolites secreted by the respective sources., (© 2023. In this study, for the first time, the comparison of commercially available chemical ZnO NCs and bio-ZnO NCs produced extracellularly by two different probiotic isolates (Latilactobacillus curvatus MEVP1 [OM736187] and Limosilactobacillus fermentum MEVP2 [OM736188]) were performed. All types of ZnO formulations were characterized by comprehensive interdisciplinary approach including various instrumental techniques in order to obtain nanocomposites with suitable properties for further applications, i.e. biomedical. Based on the X- ray diffraction analysis results, all tested nanoparticles exhibited the wurtzite structure with an average crystalline size distribution of 21.1 nm (CHEM_ZnO NCs), 13.2 nm (1C_ZnO NCs) and 12.9 nm (4a_ZnO NCs). The microscopy approach with use of broad range of detectors (SE, BF, HAADF) revealed the core-shell structure of bio-ZnO NCs, compared to the chemical one. The nanoparticles core of 1C and 4a_ZnO NCs are coated by the specific organic deposit coming from the metabolites produced by two probiotic strains, L. fermentum and L. curvatus. Vibrational infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) and mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF-MS) have been used to monitor the ZnO NCs surface chemistry and allowed for better description of bio-NCs organic coating composition (amino acids residues). The characterized ZnO formulations were then assessed for their photocatalytic properties against methylene blue (MB). Both types of bio-ZnO NCs exhibited good photocatalytic activity, however, the effect of CHEM_ZnO NCs was more potent than bio-ZnO NCs. Finally, the colloidal stability of the tested nanoparticles were investigated based on the zeta potential (ZP) and hydrodynamic diameter measurements in dependence of the nanocomposites concentration and investigation time. During the biosynthesis of nano-ZnO, the increment of pH from 5.7 to around 8 were observed which suggested possible contribution of zinc aquacomplexes and carboxyl-rich compounds resulted in conversion of zinc tetrahydroxy ion complex to ZnO NCs. Overall results in present study suggest that used accessible source such us probiotic strains, L. fermentum and L. curvatus, for extracellular bio-ZnO NCs synthesis are of high interest. What is important, no significant differences between organic deposit (e.g. metabolites) produced by tested strains were noticed-both of them allowed to form the nanoparticles with natural origin coating. In comparison to chemical ZnO NCs, those synthetized via microbiological route are promising material with further biological potential once have shown high stability during 7 days., (© 2023.
