Abstract: Unbounded complex symmetric weighted shifts are studied. Complex symmetric unilateral weighted shifts whose $C^\infty$ vectors contain the image of the canonical orthonormal basis under the conjugation are shown to be decomposable into an orthogonal sum of infinitely many complex selfadjoint truncated weighted shifts, which generalizes a result of S. 5. Statistical Mechanics of Inference in Epidemic Spreading

Abstract: We investigate the information-theoretical limits of inference tasks in epidemic spreading on graphs in the thermodynamic limit. The typical inference tasks consist in computing observables of the posterior distribution of the epidemic model given observations taken from a ground truth (sometimes called planted) random trajectory. We can identify two main sources of quenched disorder: the graph ensemble and the planted trajectory. The epidemic dynamics however induces non-trivial long-range correlations among individuals' states on the latter. This results in non-local correlated quenched disorder which unfortunately is typically hard to handle. To overcome this difficulty, we divide the dynamical process into two sets of variables: a set of stochastic independent variables (representing transmission delays), plus a set of correlated variables (the infection times) that depend deterministically on the first. Treating the former as quenched variables and the latter as dynamic ones, computing disorder average becomes feasible by means of the Replica Symmetric cavity method. We give theoretical predictions on the posterior probability distribution of the trajectory of each individual, conditioned to observations on the state of individuals at given times, focusing on the Susceptible Infectious (SI) model. In the Bayes-optimal condition, i.e. when true dynamic parameters are known, the inference task is expected to fall in the Replica Symmetric regime. We indeed provide predictions for the information theoretic limits of various inference tasks, in form of phase diagrams. We also identify a region, in the Bayes-Optimal setting, with strong hints of Replica Symmetry Breaking. When true parameters are unknown, we show how a maximum-likelihood procedure is able to recover them with mostly unaffected performance.

Abstract: The alignment of biological sequences such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, is one of the basic tools that allow to detect evolutionary patterns, as well as functional/structural characterizations between homologous sequences in different organisms. Typically, state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools are based on profile models that assume the statistical independence of the different sites of the sequences. Over the last years, it has become increasingly clear that homologous sequences show complex patterns of long-range correlations over the primary sequence as a consequence of the natural evolution process that selects genetic variants under the constraint of preserving the functional/structural determinants of the sequence. Here, we present a new alignment algorithm based on message passing techniques that overcomes the limitations of profile models. Our method is based on a new perturbative small-coupling expansion of the free energy of the model that assumes a linear chain approximation as the $0^\mathrm{th}$-order of the expansion. 7. The closest vector problem and the zero-temperature p-spin landscape for lossy compression

Abstract: We consider a high-dimensional random constrained optimization problem in which a set of binary variables is subjected to a linear system of equations. The cost function is a simple linear cost, measuring the Hamming distance with respect to a reference configuration. Despite its apparent simplicity, this problem exhibits a rich phenomenology. We show that different situations arise depending on the random ensemble of linear systems. When each variable is involved in at most two linear constraints, we show that the problem can be partially solved analytically, in particular we show that upon convergence, the zero-temperature limit of the cavity equations returns the optimal solution. We then study the geometrical properties of more general random ensembles. In particular we observe a range in the density of constraints at which the systems enters a glassy phase where the cost function has many minima. Interestingly, the algorithmic performances are only sensitive to another phase transition affecting the structure of configurations allowed by the linear constraints. We also extend our results to variables belonging to $\text{GF}(q)$, the Galois Field of order $q$. We show that increasing the value of $q$ allows to achieve a better optimum, which is confirmed by the Replica Symmetric cavity method predictions., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures

We show that the threshold $\alpha_{\rm d}(k)$ for the transition can be further increased with respect to a restricted interaction within the hyperedges, and perform an asymptotic expansion of $\alpha_{\rm d}(k)$ in the large $k$ limit. Abstract: Random Constraint Satisfaction Problems exhibit several phase transitions when their density of constraints is varied. One of these threshold phenomena, known as the clustering or dynamic transition, corresponds to a transition for an information theoretic problem called tree reconstruction. In this article we study this threshold for two CSPs, namely the bicoloring of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with a density $\alpha$ of constraints, and the $q$-coloring of random graphs with average degree $c$. We show that in the large $k,q$ limit the clustering transition occurs for $\alpha = \frac{2^{k-1}}{k} (\ln k + \ln \ln k + \gamma_{\rm d} + o(1))$, $c= q (\ln q + \ln \ln q + \gamma_{\rm d}+ o(1))$, where $\gamma_{\rm d}$ is the same constant for both models. We characterize $\gamma_{\rm d}$ via a functional equation, solve the latter numerically to estimate $\gamma_{\rm d} \approx 0.871$, and obtain an analytic lowerbound $\gamma_{\rm d} \ge 1 + \ln (2 (\sqrt{2}-1)) \approx 0.812$. Abstract: The typical complexity of Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) can be investigated by means of random ensembles of instances. The latter exhibit many threshold phenomena besides their satisfiability phase transition, in particular a clustering or dynamic phase transition (related to the tree reconstruction problem) at which their typical solutions shatter into disconnected components. In this paper we study the evolution of this phenomenon under a bias that breaks the uniformity among solutions of one CSP instance, concentrating on the bicoloring of k-uniform random hypergraphs. We show that for small k the clustering transition can be delayed in this way to higher density of constraints, and that this strategy has a positive impact on the performances of Simulated Annealing algorithms. We characterize the modest gain that can be expected in the large k limit from the simple implementation of the biasing idea studied here. 14. Inhomogeneous Gaussian Free Field inside the interacting arctic curve

Abstract: The six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions is one representative of a class of two-dimensional lattice statistical mechanics models that exhibit a phase separation known as the arctic curve phenomenon. In the thermodynamic limit, the degrees of freedom are completely frozen in a region near the boundary, while they are critically fluctuating in a central region. The arctic curve is the phase boundary that separates those two regions. Critical fluctuations inside the arctic curve have been studied extensively, both in physics and in mathematics, in free models (i.e., models that map to free fermions, or equivalently to determinantal point processes). Here we study those critical fluctuations in the interacting (i.e., not free, not determinantal) six-vertex model, and provide evidence for the following two claims: (i) the critical fluctuations are given by a Gaussian Free Field (GFF), as in the free case, but (ii) contrarily to the free case, the GFF is inhomogeneous, meaning that its coupling constant $K$ becomes position-dependent, $K \rightarrow K({\rm x})$. The evidence is mainly based on the numerical solution of appropriate Bethe ansatz equations with an imaginary extensive twist, and on transfer matrix computations, but the second claim is also supported by the analytic calculation of $K$ and its first two derivatives in selected points. Contrarily to the usual GFF, this inhomogeneous GFF is not defined in terms of the Green's function of the Laplacian $\Delta = \nabla \cdot \nabla$ inside the critical domain, but instead, of the Green's function of a generalized Laplacian $\Delta = \nabla \cdot \frac{1}{K} \nabla$ parametrized by the function $K$. Abstract: We have studied the C14 hexagonal Laves phase of YbAg$_2$ at normal conditions and under external pressure up to 19 GPa by the time-differential perturbed angular $\gamma-\gamma$ correlation spectroscopy (TDPAC) using $^{111}$Cd probe nuclei. Under pressure the valence of Yb undergoes a two stage transition from 2.8 to 3. The two stage scenario is characterized by two distinct quadrupole frequencies of $^{111}$Cd probes in silver sublattice, monotonically increasing with pressure and saturating at 8 and 16 GPa. Our experimental data are compared with the density functional studies of the electron band structure of YbAg$_2$, whose results are used for discussion and interpretation of these experiments. We have found that there are two different electric field gradients at inequivalent silver sites and that $4d$-states of silver participate in metal bonding, allowing for the formation of the hexagonal Laves phase.

Abstract: We study bounded weighted shifts on directed trees. We show that the set of multiplication operators associated with an injective weighted shift on a rooted directed tree coincides with the WOT/SOT closure of the set of polynomials of the weighted shift. From this fact we deduce reflexivity of those weighted shifts on rooted directed trees whose all path-induced spectral-like radii are positive. We show that weighted shifts with positive weights on rooted directed trees admit a Wold-type decomposition. We prove that the pairwise orthogonality of the factors in the decomposition is equivalent to the weighted shift being balanced.

We build the quasinormal extension which is a weighted composition operator induced by the same symbol. Abstract: A recent example of a non-hyponormal injective composition operator in an $L^2$-space generating Stieltjes moment sequences, invented by three of the present authors, was built over a non-locally finite directed tree. The main goal of this paper is to solve the problem of whether there exists such an operator over a locally finite directed graph and, in the affirmative case, to find the simplest possible graph with these properties (simplicity refers to local valency). The problem is solved affirmatively for the locally finite directed graph $\mathscr G_{2,0}$, which consists of two branches and one loop. The only simpler directed graph for which the problem remains unsolved consists of one branch and one loop. The consistency condition, the only efficient tool for verifying subnormality of unbounded composition operators, is intensively studied in the context of $\mathscr G_{2,0}$, which leads to a constructive method of solving the problem. Abstract: Time differential perturbed angular gamma-gamma-correlation (TDPAC) method on 111Cd nuclei probes inserted in ZrZn1.9 is used to measure the magnetic hyperfine fields (MHF) at Zr and Zn sites and the electric field gradient (EFG) Vzz at Zn sites as a function of temperature at various pressures and as a function of pressure at the temperature 4 K. Our data indicate that the local magnetic moment of Zr in the magnetically ordered state is substantially larger than its value obtained from the macroscopic measurements and that there is also an induced magnetic moment at the Zn site. Abstract: We employ a large sample of 20171 optically-selected groups and clusters at 0.15 < z < 0.4 in the SDSS to investigate how the stacked stellar mass fraction varies across a wide range of total mass, $M_{500}$. Our study improves upon previous observational studies in a number of important ways, including having a much larger sample size, an explicit inclusion of the intracluster light (ICL) component, and a thorough examination of the accuracy of our total mass estimates via comparisons to simulations and weak lensing observations. We find that the stellar mass fraction depends only weakly on total mass and that the contribution of ICL to the total stellar mass fraction is significant (typically 20-40 per cent). Both of these findings are in excellent accordance with the predictions of cosmological simulations. Under the assumption of a Chabrier (Salpeter) IMF, the derived star formation efficiency ($f_{star}$/$f_{b}$, where $f_b=\Omega_b/\Omega_m$) is relatively low at 8 per cent (14 per cent) and is consistent with the global star formation efficiency of semi-analytic models that reproduce the galaxy stellar mass function. When our measured stellar mass fractions are combined with the observed relation between hot gas mass fraction and total mass from X-ray observations, our results imply that galaxy groups have significantly lower baryon fractions than massive clusters. Abstract: It is shown that for every positive integer $n$ there exists a subnormal weighted shift on a directed tree (with or without root) whose $n$th power is densely defined while its $(n+1)$th power is not. As a consequence, for every positive integer $n$ there exists a non-symmetric subnormal composition operator $C$ in an $L^2$ space over a $\sigma$-finite measure space such that $C^n$ is densely defined and $C^{n+1}$ is not.

32. Are group- and cluster-scale dark matter halos over-concentrated?

Abstract: We investigate the relationship between the halo mass, M_200, and concentration, c, for a sample of 26 group- and cluster-scale strong gravitational lenses. In contrast with previous results, we find that these systems are only ~ 0.1 dex more over-concentrated than similar-mass halos from dark matter simulations; the concentration of a halo with M_200 = 10^14 M_sun is log c = 0.78\pm0.05, while simulations of halos with this mass at similar redshifts (z ~ 0.4) predict log c ~ 0.56 - 0.71. We also find that we are unable to make informative inference on the slope of the M_200-c relation in spite of our large sample size; we note that the steep slopes found in previous studies tend to follow the slope in the covariance between M_200 and c, indicating that these results may be measuring the scatter in the data rather than the intrinsic signal. Furthermore, we conclude that our inability to constrain the M_200-c slope is due to a limited range of halo masses, as determined by explicitly modelling our halo mass distribution, and we suggest that other studies may be producing biased results by using an incorrect distribution for their halo masses., Comment: 8 pages; accepted to MNRAS

Abstract: A criterion for subnormality of unbounded composition operators in L2-spaces, written in terms of measurable families of probability measures satisfying the so-called consistency condition, is established. It becomes a new characterization of subnormality in the case of bounded composition operators. Pseudo-moments of a measurable family of probability measures that satisfies the consistency condition are proved to be given by the Radon-Nikodym derivatives which appear in Lambert's characterization of bounded composition operators. A criterion for subnormality of composition operators induced by matrices is provided. The question of subnormality of composition operators over discrete measure spaces is studied. Two new classes of subnormal composition operators over discrete measure spaces are introduced. Abstract: We present a new catalogue of 55,121 groups and clusters centred on Luminous Red Galaxies from SDSS DR7 in the redshift range 0.15~2.6) that is approximately a factor of two lower than that of the dark matter (as predicted by N-body cosmological simulations) and nearly independent of halo mass. Interestingly, in spite of the difference in shape between the galaxy and dark matter radial distributions, both exhibit a high degree of self-similarity. A self-consistent comparison to several recent semi-analytic models of galaxy formation indicates that: (1) beyond ~0.3 r_500 current models are able to reproduce both the shape and normalisation of the satellite profiles; and (2) within ~0.3 r_500 the predicted profiles are sensitive to the details of the satellite-BCG merger timescale calculation. The former is a direct result of the models being tuned to match the global galaxy luminosity function combined with the assumption that the satellite galaxies do not suffer significant tidal stripping, even though their surrounding dark matter haloes can be removed through this process. Combining our results with measurements of the intracluster light should provide a way to inform theoretical models on the efficacy of the tidal stripping and merging processes., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS with minor revisions

Abstract: The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well as astrophysical and cosmological stochastic backgrounds. Since the relative strength and angular distribution of the many possible sources of GWs are not well constrained, searches for GW signals must be performed in a model-independent way. To that end we perform two directional searches for persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. The latter result is the first of its kind. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we present 90% confidence level (CL) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with typical values between 2-20x10^-50 strain^2 Hz^-1 and 5-35x10^-49 strain^2 Hz^-1 sr^-1 for pointlike and extended sources respectively. The limits on pointlike sources constitute a factor of 30 improvement over the previous best limits. We also set 90% CL limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW strain from interesting targets including Sco X-1, SN1987A and the Galactic Center as low as ~7x10^-25 in the most sensitive frequency range near 160 Hz. 39. Dusty MgII absorbers: population statistics, extinction curves and gamma-ray burst sightlines

Abstract: We present a new determination of the dust content and near-ultraviolet/optical extinction curves associated with a sample of ~8300 strong (equivalent width > 1A) Mg II absorbers, with redshifts 0.41A and 34+/-2 per cent for absorbers with EW>2A. Direct determination of the shape of the near-ultraviolet extinction curves for absorbers as a function of E(B-V) show evidence for systematic changes in the form of the extinction curves. At low E(B-V) (>0.05), the extinction curve is well represented by a Small Magellanic Cloud-like extinction curve. For intermediate E(B-V)s (<0.2), approximately a third of MgII absorbers show evidence for a 2175A feature similar to that of the Large Magellanic Cloud. For the small number of high E(B-V) (>0.3) absorbers, the majority of which exhibit strong CaII 3935,3970 absorption, there is evidence for a 2175A feature as strong as that found in the Milky Way. Application of the new results on the dust content of strong Mg II absorbers shows that dusty absorbers can account for a significant proportion, up to a factor of two, of the observed overdensity of absorbers seen towards Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) sightlines, compared to sightlines towards quasars in flux-limited samples. Abstract: A new method of verifying the subnormality of unbounded Hilbert space operators based on an approximation technique is proposed. Diverse sufficient conditions for subnormality of unbounded weighted shifts on directed trees are established. An approach to this issue via consistent systems of probability measures is invented. The role played by determinate Stieltjes moment sequences is elucidated. Lambert's characterization of subnormality of bounded operators is shown to be valid for unbounded weighted shifts on directed trees that have sufficiently many quasi-analytic vectors, which is a new phenomenon in this area. Abstract: We present direct upper limits on continuous gravitational wave emission from the Vela pulsar using data from the Virgo detector's second science run. These upper limits have been obtained using three independent methods that assume the gravitational wave emission follows the radio timing. Two of the methods produce frequentist upper limits for an assumed known orientation of the star's spin axis and value of the wave polarization angle of, respectively, $1.9\ee{-24}$ and $2.2\ee{-24}$, with 95% confidence. The third method, under the same hypothesis, produces a Bayesian upper limit of $2.1\ee{-24}$, with 95% degree of belief. These limits are below the indirect {\it spin-down limit} of $3.3\ee{-24}$ for the Vela pulsar, defined by the energy loss rate inferred from observed decrease in Vela's spin frequency, and correspond to a limit on the star ellipticity of $\sim 10^{-3}$. Abstract: We present the first modeled search for gravitational waves using the complete binary black hole gravitational waveform from inspiral through the merger and ringdown for binaries with negligible component spin. We searched approximately 2 years of LIGO data taken between November 2005 and September 2007 for systems with component masses of 1-99 solar masses and total masses of 25-100 solar masses. We did not detect any plausible gravitational-wave signals but we do place upper limits on the merger rate of binary black holes as a function of the component masses in this range. We constrain the rate of mergers for binary black hole systems with component masses between 19 and 28 solar masses and negligible spin to be no more than 2.0 per Mpc^3 per Myr at 90% confidence., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The Virgo detector is a kilometer-length interferometer for gravitational wave detection located near Pisa (Italy). During its second science run (VSR2) in 2009, six months of data were accumulated with a sensitivity close to its design. In this paper, the methods used to determine the parameters for sensitivity estimation and gravitational wave reconstruction are described. The main quantities to be calibrated are the frequency response of the mirror actuation and the sensing of the output power. Focus is also put on their absolute timing. The monitoring of the calibration data as well as the parameter estimation with independent techniques are discussed to provide an estimation of the calibration uncertainties. Finally, the estimation of the Virgo sensitivity in the frequency-domain is described and typical sensitivities measured during VSR2 are shown., Comment: 30 pages, 23 figures, 1 table. Abstract: We present an up-to-date, comprehensive summary of the rates for all types of compact binary coalescence sources detectable by the Initial and Advanced versions of the ground-based gravitational-wave detectors LIGO and Virgo. Astrophysical estimates for compact-binary coalescence rates depend on a number of assumptions and unknown model parameters, and are still uncertain. The most confident among these estimates are the rate predictions for coalescing binary neutron stars which are based on extrapolations from observed binary pulsars in our Galaxy. These yield a likely coalescence rate of 100 per Myr per Milky Way Equivalent Galaxy (MWEG), although the rate could plausibly range from 1 per Myr per MWEG to 1000 per Myr per MWEG. We convert coalescence rates into detection rates based on data from the LIGO S5 and Virgo VSR2 science runs and projected sensitivities for our Advanced detectors. Using the detector sensitivities derived from these data, we find a likely detection rate of 0.02 per year for Initial LIGO-Virgo interferometers, with a plausible range between 0.0002 and 0.2 per year. The likely binary neutron-star detection rate for the Advanced LIGO-Virgo network increases to 40 events per year, with a range between 0.4 and 400 per year.

Abstract: Using a small amount of radioactive 111Cd atoms implanted in cerium lattice to probe the hyperfine electric quadrupole interaction, we have detected a quadrupole electron charge density component in alpha-Ce, which is absent in gamma-Ce. The appearance of the quadrupole density in alpha-Ce predicted by the quadrupole scenario of the phase transition demonstrates that the spacial symmetry is lowered at the gamma->alpha phase transition. This finding makes cerium the first element where the symmetry change is driven exclusively by the valence electron degrees of freedom while the atomic centers of mass (cerium nuclei) occupy the face centered cubic positions. We also report on nuclear quadrupole interactions in other high pressure phases of cerium: alpha' (C2/m space symmetry) and alpha' (alpha-U structure)., Comment: 4 pages 3 figures

Abstract: Virgo is a kilometer-length interferometer for gravitational waves detection located near Pisa. Its first science run, VSR1, occured from May to October 2007. The aims of the calibration are to measure the detector sensitivity and to reconstruct the time series of the gravitational wave strain h(t). The absolute length calibration is based on an original non-linear reconstruction of the differential arm length variations in free swinging Michelson configurations. It uses the laser wavelength as length standard. This method is used to calibrate the frequency dependent response of the Virgo mirror actuators and derive the detector in-loop response and sensitivity within ~5%. The principle of the strain reconstruction is highlighted and the h(t) systematic errors are estimated. A photon calibrator is used to check the sign of h(t). The reconstructed h(t) during VSR1 is valid from 10 Hz up to 10 kHz with systematic errors estimated to 6% in amplitude. Abstract: Progenitor scenarios for short gamma-ray bursts (short GRBs) include coalescenses of two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, which would necessarily be accompanied by the emission of strong gravitational waves. We present a search for these known gravitational-wave signatures in temporal and directional coincidence with 22 GRBs that had sufficient gravitational-wave data available in multiple instruments during LIGO's fifth science run, S5, and Virgo's first science run, VSR1. We find no statistically significant gravitational-wave candidates within a [-5, +1) s window around the trigger time of any GRB. Using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test, we find no evidence for an excess of weak gravitational-wave signals in our sample of GRBs. Abstract: We present a search for gravitational waves from 116 known millisecond and young pulsars using data from the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors. For this search ephemerides overlapping the run period were obtained for all pulsars using radio and X-ray observations. We demonstrate an updated search method that allows for small uncertainties in the pulsar phase parameters to be included in the search. We report no signal detection from any of the targets and therefore interpret our results as upper limits on the gravitational wave signal strength. The most interesting limits are those for young pulsars. We present updated limits on gravitational radiation from the Crab pulsar, where the measured limit is now a factor of seven below the spin-down limit. This limits the power radiated via gravitational waves to be less than ~2% of the available spin-down power. For the X-ray pulsar J0537-6910 we reach the spin-down limit under the assumption that any gravitational wave signal from it stays phase locked to the X-ray pulses over timing glitches, and for pulsars J1913+1011 and J1952+3252 we are only a factor of a few above the spin-down limit. Of the recycled millisecond pulsars several of the measured upper limits are only about an order of magnitude above their spin-down limits. For these our best (lowest) upper limit on gravitational wave amplitude is 2.3x10^-26 for J1603-7202 and our best (lowest) limit on the inferred pulsar ellipticity is 7.0x10^-8 for J2124-3358., Comment: 39 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave bursts associated with 137 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments during the fifth LIGO science run and first Virgo science run. The data used in this analysis were collected from 2005 November 4 to 2007 October 1, and most of the GRB triggers were from the Swift satellite. The search uses a coherent network analysis method that takes into account the different locations and orientations of the interferometers at the three LIGO-Virgo sites. We find no evidence for gravitational-wave burst signals associated with this sample of GRBs. Using simulated short-duration (<1 s) waveforms, we set upper limits on the amplitude of gravitational waves associated with each GRB. We also place lower bounds on the distance to each GRB under the assumption of a fixed energy emission in gravitational waves, with typical limits of D ~ 15 Mpc (E_GW^iso / 0.01 M_o c^2)^1/2 for emission at frequencies around 150 Hz, where the LIGO-Virgo detector network has best sensitivity.
